In this work Fenton's reagent was used to treat activated carbon saturated with organochloro compounds for the oxidation of the adsorbed contaminants and the regeneration of the carbon adsorbent. Activated carbon containing adsorbed chlorinated model substrates such as chlorobenzene, tetrachloroethylene, chloroform or 1,2-dichloropropane was treated with Fenton's reagent at room temperature resulting in a rapid consumption of the organochloro compounds. Thermogravimetric, infrared, BET surface area and MIMS adsorption studies showed that Fenton's treatment has no significant effect on the physico-chemical properties of the activated carbon. The used carbon adsorbents can be efficiently regenerated and recycled with no loss of its adsorption capacity even after five consecutive treatments with Fenton's reagent. 相似文献
Mountain forest areas are key for providing a wide range of ecosystem services and are hot spots for land use change processes, in particular, increase in forest cover at the expense of mountain pastures and meadows. Mountain forest systems in eastern and western Europe have likely similar future socio-economic situations but significantly different socio-economic history. Using a scenario-based land use modelling approach (Dyna-CLUE framework) we model three scenarios (trend, liberalisation and self-sufficiency) of future land use in the Polish Carpathians and the Swiss Alps, focussing on forest cover change. We find that forest cover increase can be expected to continue in European mountainous regions under all likely scenarios, limited only by relatively strict policy interventions. Biophysical factors, rather than socio-economic ones, are key for defining the suitability for, and therefore likely locations of future forest cover, but land use legacy plays a very important role in the spatial patterns of future forest cover, particularly in eastern Europe.
Knowledge of the relationship between the evolution of butyric acid, the main precursor of methane, and the methanogenic microbial population, quantified by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), is important for understating and controlling the anaerobic digestion of solid waste. In this study, a statistical analysis has been made of this relationship in a laboratory-scale continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) without recycling of biomass. The CSTR has been operated at four organic loading rates (OLR) between 4.42 and 7.50 kg VS m?3 day?1, using the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW) as the substrate. During the start-up stage, the consumption of butyric acid is related to the population of H2-utilising methanogens (R2 = 0.774), whereas in the stabilization stage, it is related to that of acetoclastic methanogens (R2 = 0.716). Therefore, it can be concluded that the methanogenic population dynamics are closely correlated with the concentration of volatile fatty acids, and in particular, with that of butyric acid. 相似文献
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and Polybrominated Diphenyls Ethers (PBDEs) are two highly lipophilic classes of persistent organic pollutants able to resist degradation and with the ability to bioaccumulate through the food chain. In Brazil, there are still few studies on PCBs and PBDEs in aquatic organisms. In this study, we determined the levels of PBDEs and PCBs in three different fish species from the Ilha Grande Bay, located in the southern state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. PBDEs levels were very low, with values below the limit of quantification. PCBs concentrations ranged from 2.29 to 27.60 ng g?1 ww in muscle and from 3.41 to 34.22 ng g?1 ww in liver of the three investigated fish species. Significant positive correlations were established between PCBs concentration and fish biometric variables in mullet (length and lipid content) and a statistically significant change between seasons in croaker was observed. 相似文献

A common assumption in behavioral ecology is that the valuation of a resource by consumers depends on the energetic value
of the resource itself. Nevertheless, the value of a resource may be relative to the condition of the organism, which is in
turn related to the abiotic conditions such as ambient temperature. We developed a theoretical model—incorporating these untested
assumptions—to predict a functional relationship between territorial aggression and ambient temperature for individuals sensitive
to daily variations in energy availability. We evaluated our theoretical predictions against a field experiment carried out
with the hummingbird Sephanoides sephaniodes. The model predicted a quadratic relation between aggression intensity and ambient temperature. Field data were better explained
by a quadratic equation than a linear function, suggesting the existence of lower and upper thresholds of temperature which
determine the intensity of territorial defense. Ambient temperature affects energy expenditure for thermoregulation, and therefore,
it fixes the benefit level that must be produced by the territory to pay the costs of its defense. Our findings strongly suggest
that abiotic conditions can change an animal evaluation of the yield of a resource and in turn influence the behavioral strategy
which it adopts. 相似文献
Modelling masting habit, i.e. the spatial synchronized annual variability in fruit production, is a huge task due to two main circumstances: (1) the identification of main ecological factors controlling fruiting processes, and (2) the common departure of fruit data series from the main basic statistical assumptions of normality and independence. Stone pine (Pinus pinea L.) is one of the main species in the Mediterranean basin that is able to grow under hard limiting conditions (sandy soils and extreme continental climate), and typically defined as a masting species. Considering the high economical value associated with edible nut production, the masting habit of stone pine has been a main concern for the forest management of the species. In the present work we have used annual fruit data series from 740 stone pine trees measured during a 13 years period (1996-2008) in order: (a) to verify our main hypothesis pointing out to the existence of a weather control of the fruiting process in limiting environments, rather than resource depletion or endogenous inherent cycles; (b) to identify those site factors, stand attributes and climate events affecting specific traits involved in fruiting process; and (c) to construct a model for predicting spatial and temporal patterns of variability in stone pine cone production at different spatial extents as region, stand and tree. Given the nature of the data, the model has been formulated as zero-inflated log-normal, incorporating random components to carry out with the observed lack of independence. This model attains efficiencies close to 70-80% in predicting temporal and spatial variability at regional scale. Though efficiencies are reduced according to the spatial extent of the model, it leads to unbiased estimates and efficiencies over 35-50% when predicting annual yields at tree or stand scale, respectively. In this sense, the proposed model is a main tool for facilitating decision making in some management aspects such as the quantification of total amount of cones annually supplied to nut industry, design of cone harvest programs or the optimal application of seedling felling. 相似文献
