The relation among inbreeding, heterozygosity, and fitness has been studied primarily among outbred populations, and little is known about these phenomena in endangered populations. Most researchers conclude that the relation between coefficient of inbreeding estimated from pedigrees and fitness traits (inbreeding‐fitness correlations) better reflects inbreeding depression than the relation between marker heterozygosity and fitness traits (heterozygosity‐fitness correlations). However, it has been suggested recently that heterozygosity‐fitness correlations should only be expected when inbreeding generates extensive identity disequilibrium (correlations in heterozygosity and homozygosity across loci throughout the genome). We tested this hypothesis in Mohor gazelle (Gazella dama mhorr) and Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus). For Mohor gazelle, we calculated the inbreeding coefficient and measured heterozygosity at 17 microsatellite loci. For Iberian lynx, we measured heterozygosity at 36 microsatellite loci. In both species we estimated semen quality, a phenotypic trait directly related to fitness that is controlled by many loci and is affected by inbreeding depression. Both species showed evidence of extensive identity disequilibrium, and in both species heterozygosity was associated with semen quality. In the Iberian lynx the low proportion of normal sperm associated with low levels of heterozygosity was so extreme that it is likely to limit the fertility of males. In Mohor gazelle, although heterozygosity was associated with semen quality, inbreeding coefficient was not. This result suggests that when coefficient of inbreeding is calculated on the basis of a genealogy that begins after a long history of inbreeding, the coefficient of inbreeding fails to capture previous demographic information because it is a poor estimator of accumulated individual inbreeding. We conclude that among highly endangered species with extensive identity disequilibrium, examination of heterozygosity‐fitness correlations may be an effective way to detect inbreeding depression, whereas inbreeding‐fitness correlations may be poor indicators of inbreeding depression if the pedigree does not accurately reflect the history of inbreeding. We present a case report on a fetus with multiple malformations, diagnosed by ultrasound at 20 weeks' gestation. From the combination of intrauterine growth retardation and limb abnormalities that were observed, the most likely diagnosis was considered to be Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS). Following counselling, the mother opted to terminate the pregnancy. Chromosome analysis of cultured amniotic fluid cells showed a karyotype of 46,XX,t(3;5)(q21;p13). Postmortem examination of the baby confirmed the presence of features consistent with a diagnosis of CdLS. This case provides a report of a definitive diagnosis of Cornelia de Lange Syndrome, suspected on the basis of ultrasound imaging and confirmed by amniocentesis findings. The metabolism of diisopropylnaphthalene (DIPN) in fish was studied from an ecotoxicological viewpoint to clarify the environmental fate of DIPN, a solvent of carbonless paper which is widely used as a substitute for PCB. This study identified the following metabolites in carp by in vivo experiment; 2-(1-hydroxy-1-methyl) ethyl-6-isopropylnaphthalene, 2-(1-methyl-2-hydroxyethyl)-6-isopropyl-naphthalene, 2,6-(1-hydroxy-1-methyl) ethyl-naphthalene, 2-(1-hydroxy-1-hydroxymethyl) ethyl-6-isopropylnaphthalene and α-[2-(6-isopropylnaphthyl)] propionic acid. Identification was based on UV, IR, MS, and NMR analyses. The metabolism of 2,6-DIPN in carp was concluded to mainly through oxidation of the isopropyl chain.  相似文献

This paper reports the results of a study on the phosphorus release mechanism of lake sediment, primarily by examining the relationship between release rates and sediment depth. Sediment samples from Lake Nakanoumi were used to examine the relationship between phosphorus content and sediment depth and to measure the release quantities of nutrients, specifically phosphorus. From these data, a model of phosphorus release rates was conceived and evaluated. This study concludes that phosphorus release rates from sediment depend primarily on phosphorus content of the sediment.  相似文献

The influence of two types of colloids (natural organic matter, NOM), a colloid with high affinity for radionuclides (RN(s)), and hydrophilic synthetic latex (SHL), a colloid with low affinity for RN(s) on the transfer of (60)Co and (85)Sr in a silica sand column was studied under different physicochemical conditions: pH (4.9), ionic strength (10(-3) M and 10(-2) M), concentration of colloids (100 mg l(-1), 10 mg l(-1)), flow velocity (12.4 cm h(-1) and 3.7 cm h(-1)), water saturation of the column (100% and 70%). In the absence of colloids, the transfer of (60)Co and (85)Sr was retarded compared to the transfer of the conservative tracer. In the presence of colloids and according to the specific physicochemical conditions, an acceleration or retardation of (60)Co and (85)Sr transfer was observed compared to their transfer in the absence of colloids. Our results evidenced that any colloids even with low reactivity could significantly modify the RN transfer. However, the extent to which the transfer was influenced differs according to the colloid type; the NOM exhibiting higher impact than SHL. Batch experiments helped in interpreting of the interactions between the colloids, RN(s) and solid phase observed in column.  相似文献

In order to determine the mechanisms of the retention of 60Co, 85Sr and 134Cs in natural silica sand columns, desorption experiments were performed by changes of pH and ionic strength and by injection of natural organic matter (NOM). Injection of KCl (0.1 M) resulted in a high release of 60Co (60-100%) and 85Sr (72-100%) but a smaller release of 134Cs (31-66%). Only limited release of 60Co (66%) and 85Sr (71%) and no release of 134Cs were observed by injection of NOM. The different percentages of desorption were related to the chemical characteristics of the organic colloids previously retained in columns before the desorption step. The results evidenced different sorption processes on energetically heterogeneous surface sites. According to the initial conditions, the binding of the radionuclides to the solid phase resulted from weak and easily reversible sorption processes to strong association probably by inner sphere complexes. The rather weak release of 134Cs by KCl was attributed to the strong retention of 134Cs by clay coatings on the natural silica sand surfaces.  相似文献

Uranium Accumulation of Crop Plants Enhanced by Citric Acid   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Citric acid was applied to soil to enhance U accumulation in four crop plants. While the highest enhanced U accumulation of aboveground tissues (a.c. 2000 mg kg−1 dry weight) occurred in the leaves of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea), the highest enhanced U accumulation of roots (a.c. 3500 mg kg−1 dry weight) occurred in canola (Brassica napus var. napus). Uranium translocation among tissues of test plants is in the relation of roots>shoots ≅ leaves. The flowers of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) contained similar or higher U concentrations than those found in shoots, but concentrations in seeds are close to zero. In conclusion, Indian mustard is recommended as a potential species for phytoextraction for U-contaminated soil due to its high U accumulation of aboveground biomass (a.c. 2200 μg per plant). There is no evidence that two types of soils cause a significant difference of the enhanced U accumulation (p<0.05). Results, however, indicate that additional citric acid may result in downward U migration that may contaminate groundwater. Speciation of U that is taken up by plants is also discussed in the end.  相似文献
