A set of geographically isolated differential nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) load model scenarios from major Chesapeake basins provides information on the relative impact of nutrient loads on primary production and dissolved oxygen in the Chesapeake Bay. Model results show the relationships of deep water dissolved oxygen with nutrient limitation-related algal blooms, organic carbon loads from the watershed, estuarine circulation, nutrient cycling, and nutrient diagenesis. The combined effect of changes in load from multiple basins is additive for changes in both chlorophyll-a and deep water dissolved oxygen concentrations. Management of both N and P are required in the Chesapeake watershed and tidal waters to achieve water quality standards, but overall efficiencies could be gained with strategies that place greater emphasis on P control in the upper Bay and greater emphasis on N control in the lower Bay. The areas of the Bay with the highest degree of dissolved oxygen degradation that generally drive management decisions are mostly P-limited and are significantly influenced by the load from the upper Bay’s basins. Reducing P from the upper Bay’s basins will intensify P limitation and would allow an increase in N of about six times the weight of P reduction. Combining the relative nutrient reduction effectiveness with the relative control cost information could improve management efficiency and provide benefits at a lower cost. Abstract Small-scale miners often engage in environmentally damaging activities, are subject to poor safety conditions, and utilize inefficient mineral extraction technologies. Here, we explore environmental impacts to surface waters from regional artisanal small-scale gold placer mining operations conducted in iron and aluminum-rich saprolites found within the lateritic, interior Amazon rainforest of Suriname. Heavy equipment was utilized to release gold from its host material followed by amalgamation and gravity separation. In contrast with background tributary recordings, streams adjacent to these gold mining operations consistently contained turbidity measurements that exceeded United States’ EPA guidelines for aquatic species of 50 nephelometric turbidity units and were typically in the hundreds to thousands of units. Turbidity was further heightened in association with precipitation events. Mercury played a prominent role in whole ore amalgam concentration practices. Freshwater fish from the region were found to harbor mercury that encroached upon public health criteria. Dissolved phase metals present further ecotoxicological challenges to the region, but their association with mining activities was less clear. These findings collectively reveal that small-scale placer gold mining practices in the Surinamese rainforest result in an increase of suspended sediments and release of mercury into waterways that could impact communities that depend upon local fisheries. 相似文献

Abstract Air pollutants were collected in Logan, Cache County, UT, in February 1993 during two periods of atmospheric inversion accompanied by fog. The following atmospheric species were determined: (1) gaseous SO2, NO2 (semi-quantitatively),HNO3, NH3, and HF; (2) fine particulate SO4 =, NO3 -, NH4 +, F–, H+, C, Si, S, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, Se, Br, and Sr, and; (3) fine particulate mass, which was calculated. The major components of fine particulate matter were carbonaceous material, ammonium nitrate, and ammonium sulfate, while the soil component was small. Calculated, fine particulate mass averaged 80 μg/m3 and reached concentrations as high as 120 μg/m3. SO2/Sox and NO2/NOy mole ratios generally varied between 0.2 and 0.1 during inversions. These ratios also showed moderate but consistent diurnal patterns. The emission inventory for Cache County indicates sources of SO2 and NOx but not significant amounts of primary sulfate and nitrate. The observations reported here indicate there is significant conversion of SO2 and NOx in the presence of excess oxidants to sulfuric and nitric acid that are neutralized by excess ammonia. 相似文献

A dual channel gas chromatograph with flame ionisation detectors has been used extensively for analysis of volatile organic compounds in the atmosphere and forms the basis of two monitoring instruments contributing VOC data to the World Meteorological Organisation - Global Atmosphere Watch network. Recent modifications to the methodology have broadened the scope of the instrument; to incorporate measurements of selected monoterpenes, and achieve improved accuracy in the measurement of oxygenated volatile organic compounds. Analysis of selected monoterpenes has been achieved without any significant loss of resolution of the non-methane hydrocarbons or oxygenated compounds. Quantification of 64 different VOCs of varying functionalities are reported with detection limits in the range 1-5 parts per trillion. Here we present a summary of the instrumental and calibration details for the methodology, which continues to be used on many field projects, along with a discussion of the associated measurement uncertainties. 相似文献

Fire is a dominant process in boreal forest landscapes and creates a spatial patch mosaic with different burn severities and age classes. Quantifying effects of vegetation and topography on burn severity provides a scientific basis on which forest fire management plans are developed to reduce catastrophic fires. However, the relative contribution of vegetation and topography to burn severity is highly debated especially under extreme weather conditions. In this study, we hypothesized that relationships of vegetation and topography to burn severity vary with fire size. We examined this hypothesis in a boreal forest landscape of northeastern China by computing the burn severity of 24 fire patches as the difference between the pre- and post-fire Normalized Difference Vegetation Index obtained from two Landsat TM images. The vegetation and topography to burn severity relationships were evaluated at three fire-size levels of small (<100 ha, n = 12), moderate (100–1,000 ha, n = 9), and large (>1,000 ha, n = 3). Our results showed that vegetation and topography to burn severity relationships were fire-size-dependent. The burn severity of small fires was primary controlled by vegetation conditions (e.g., understory cover), and the burn severity of large fires was strongly influenced by topographic conditions (e.g., elevation). For moderate fires, the relationships were complex and indistinguishable. Our results also indicated that the pattern trends of relative importance for both vegetation and topography factors were not dependent on fire size. Our study can help managers to design fire management plans according to vegetation characteristics that are found important in controlling burn severity and prioritize management locations based on the relative importance of vegetation and topography. 相似文献

Summary Lifetime reproductive success (LRS) of male (N=103) and female (N= 66) spotted sandpipers (Actitis macularia) was studied for 13 years of a 17-year study at Little Pelican Island, Leech Lake, Minnesota. There was no sex difference in longevity, but females had significantly more mates, eggs, chicks, fledged young, and young returning in subsequent years than did males. Variance in LRS was partitioned into five life-history components: longevity (L), mates per year (M), eggs per mate (E), proportion eggs hatched (H), and proportion of chicks fledged (F). For both sexes, F accounted for the greatest proportion of variance in LRS (males, 43%; females, 47%), followed by L (males, 26%; females, 43%) and H (males, 21%; females, 28%). Positive covariance between H and F was consistent with predator-caused clutch and brood loss. Contrary to our expectations, males had a higher coefficient of variation in reproductive success than did females. Conjoined twins have been a source of fascination for both the general public and the medical profession since time immemorial. Their birth was initially viewed as an ominous sign of impending disaster. This was followed by a prolonged period through the Middle Ages and into the nineteenth century when they were regarded as freaks or monstrosities and were exhibited with substantial financial reward at circuses and sideshows. Recently, conjoined twins have attracted intense media interest, which has coincided with increasing success in their separation. This article gives an overview of the role of prenatal ultrasound in assessing the prognosis and discusses the post-natal surgical management and outcome. Contaminant concentrations were determined for media associated with 13 Florida seagrass beds. Concentrations of 10 trace metals were more commonly detected in surface water, sediment and two seagrass species than PAHs, pesticides and PCBs. Concentrations of copper and arsenic in surface water exceeded Florida aquatic life criteria more frequently than other trace elements. Total organic carbon, mercury, chromium, zinc, total chlordane, total PAHs, total PCBs, DDD and DDE were significantly greater in seagrass-rooted sediments than adjacent non-vegetated sediments. Total DDT, DDD, DDE, total chlordane, arsenic, copper and nickel exceeded proposed sediment quality guidelines at six of 13 grass beds. Pesticides, PAHs, and PCBs were below detection in seagrass tissues. Mercury, cadmium, nickel, lead and silver were detected in 50% or more of the tissues for Thalassia testudinum (turtle grass) and Halodule wrightii (shoal grass).
