Healthcare facilities undergoing renovation have specific concerns that are exacerbated when the restoration requires asbestos abatement of aged floor tile and mastic. The current state of the art for removal of these materials involves manual removal of floor tile and chemical stripping of mastic. Utilization of these stripping chemicals is a concern for facilities whose perception is based on a safe, caring, and healthy environment. In this study, wet grinding is evaluated as an alternative to chemical stripping of asbestos-containing floor tile mastic. This study endeavors to answer the question; what is the difference between these two methodologies in terms of their operational efficacy and suitability in the healthcare setting. Wet grinding and chemical stripping are evaluated in a side-by-side comparison using a mixed methods approach. The data shows that the methodologies are statistically similar in terms of their cost and emissions data. The data indicates that the benefits associated with the wet grinding method offer advantages that are not present using the chemical stripping method. This study also demonstrates that wet grinding is a viable alternative to chemical stripping especially in healthcare facilities. 相似文献

This article aims to develop a general model for the evaluation of ecological-economic efficiency that will serve as an information
support tool for decision making at the corporate, municipal, and regional levels. It encompasses cost-benefit analysis in
solid waste management by applying a sustainability promoting approach that is explicitly related to monetary measures. A
waste managements’ efficient decision (WAMED) model based on cost-benefit analysis is proposed and developed to evaluate the
ecological-economic efficiency of solid waste management schemes. The employment of common business administration methodology
tools is featured. A classification of competing waste management models is introduced to facilitate evaluation of the relevance
of the previously introduced WAMED model. Suggestions are made for how to combine the previously introduced EUROPE model,
based on the equality principle, with the WAMED model to create economic incentives to reduce solid waste management-related
emissions. A fictive case study presents the practical application of the proposed cost-benefit analysis-based theory to the
landfilling concept. It is concluded that the presented methodology reflects an integrated approach to decreasing negative
impacts on the environment and on the health of the population, while increasing economic benefits through the implementation

Legislation in some parts of the world now requires municipal solid waste (MSW) to be processed prior to landfilling to reduce its biodegradability and hence its polluting potential through leachate and fugitive emission of greenhouse gases. This pre-processing may be achieved through what is generically termed mechanical–biological-treatment (MBT). One of the major concerns relating to MBT wastes is that the strength of the material may be less than for raw MSW, owing to the removal of sheet, stick and string-like reinforcing elements during processing. Also, the gradual increase in mobilized strength over strains of 30% or so commonly associated with unprocessed municipal solid waste may not occur with treated wastes. This paper describes a series of triaxial tests carried out to investigate the stress–strain–strength characteristics of an MBT waste, using a novel digital image analysis technique for the determination of detailed displacement fields over the whole specimen. New insights gained into the mechanical behavior of MBT waste include the effect of density on the stress–strain response, the initial 1-D compression of lightly consolidated specimens, and the likely reinforcing effect of small sheet like particles remaining in the waste. 相似文献

Diffuse pollution remains a major threat to surface waters due to eutrophication caused by phosphorus (P) transfer from agricultural land. Vegetated buffer strips (VBSs) are increasingly used to mitigate diffuse P losses from agricultural land, having been shown to reduce particulate P transfer. However, retention of dissolved P (DP) has been lower, and in some cases VBSs have increased delivery to surface waters. The aims of this review were (i) to develop a conceptual model to enhance the understanding of VBS functioning in terms of DP, (ii) to identify key processes within the model that affect DP retention and delivery, and (iii) to explore evidence for the controls on these processes. A greater understanding in these areas will allow the development of management strategies that enhance DP retention. We found evidence of a surface layer in buffer strip soils that is enriched in soluble P compared with adjacent agricultural land and may be responsible for the reported increased DP delivery. Through increased biological activity in VBSs, plants and microorganisms may assimilate P from particulates retained in the VBSs or native soil P and remobilize this P in a more soluble form. These conclusions are based on a limited amount of research, and a better understanding of biogeochemical cycling of P in buffer strip soils is required. 相似文献

Abstract Observations of the mass and chemical composition of particles less than 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5), light extinction, and meteorology in the urban Baltimore-Washington corridor during July 1999 and July 2000 are presented and analyzed to study summertime haze formation in the mid-Atlantic region. The mass fraction of ammoniated sulfate (SO4 2-) and carbonaceous material in PM2.5 were each ~50% for cleaner air (PM2.5 < 10 μg/m3) but changed to ~60% and ~20%, respectively, for more polluted air (PM2.5 > 30 μg/m3). This signifies the role of SO4 2- in haze formation. Comparisons of data from this study with the Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments network suggest that SO4 2? is more regional than carbonaceous material and originates in part from upwind source regions. The light extinction coefficient is well correlated to PM2.5 mass plus water associated with inorganic salt, leading to a mass extinction efficiency of 7.6 ± 1.7 m2/g for hydrated aerosol. The most serious haze episode occurring between July 15 and 19, 1999, was characterized by westerly transport and recirculation slowing removal of pollutants. At the peak of this episode, 1-hr PM2.5 concentration reached ~45 μg/m3, visual range dropped to ~5 km, and aerosol water likely contributed to ~40% of the light extinction coefficient. 相似文献

Pterocarya stenoptera is a native deciduous tree species and a candidate for reforestation in the riparian zones of the Three Gorges Reservoir Region of Yangtze River in China. Water treatments of continuous flooding (CF) and periodic flooding–drought (PF) were applied to examine the growth dynamics of 4-month-old P. stenoptera seedlings and its effects on soil chemical properties. Results showed that P. stenoptera seedlings in both CF and PF significantly decreased leaf biomass accumulation and the height and diameter growth as compared to that in control (CK; treatment with well-watered, well-drained soil), respectively. There was no significant difference in stem biomass among the three groups, but root biomass in PF showed severe reduction compared to that in both CK and CF. Total biomass in PF was significantly decreased compared to that in CK, but comparable to that in CF. Furthermore, no significant difference was found between CF and CK in total biomass. Water treatments in the unplanted soil pots significantly influenced soil pH, soil organic matter (OM), total nitrogen (TN), and alkali hydrolysable nitrogen (AN) contents, in contrast to no significant effects in total phosphorus (TP), total potassium (TK), available phosphorus (AP), and available potassium (AK) contents. In P. stenoptera soils, there were significant effects by water treatment, time, and treatment × time in the eight tested soil chemical properties, except treatment in TK and time effect in OM content. Compared to unplanted soils, the growth of P. stenoptera seedlings significantly increased soil pH value and OM, TN, TP, and TK contents, while decreasing AN, AP, and AK contents in CK group, augmented the mean value of each of the tested soil chemical properties with an exception of AK content in CF group, and increased soil pH value and TN, AN, TP, and AP contents with no significant differences in OM, TK, and AK contents in PF group. Given the fact that TN and TP contents significantly increased in P. stenoptera soils as compared to those in unplanted soils, growth of P. stenoptera seedlings should be a successful candidate for restoration within the highly dynamic hydrologic zone of the riparian zones of the Three Gorges Reservoir Region. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Aerosol water content was determined from relative humidity controlled optical particle counter (ASASP-X) size distribution measurements made during the Southeastern Aerosol and Visibility Study (SEAVS) in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park during summer 1995. Since the scattering response function of the ASASP-X is sensitive to particle refractive index, a technique for calibrating the ASASP-X for any real refractive index was developed. A new iterative process was employed to calculate water mass concentration and wet refractive index as functions of relative humidity. Experimental water mass concentrations were compared to theoretically predicted values assuming only ammonium sulfate compounds were hygroscopic. These comparisons agreed within experimental uncertainty. Estimates of particle hygroscopicity using a rural aerosol model of refractive index as a function of relative humidity demonstrated no significant differences from those made with daily varying refractive index estimates. Although aerosol size parameters were affected by the assumed chemical composition, forming ratios of these parameters nearly canceled these effects. 相似文献

A sampling and analysis system was developed for measuring concentrations of nitrogen dioxide in ambient air. Copper shot was found to be an effective absorbent for collecting samples at ambient levels. The analytical system was based on the desorption of the sample from the copper by heating in a hydrogen carrier stream. The desorbed sample was then determined by a combination of catalytic pyrolysis, which converted it to ammonia, and a Coulson Conductivity Detector. Data are presented showing overall recovery, effects of storage of collected samples, results for 24-hour sampling and interferences. Studies indicated the feasibility of the method for short time sampling as well as for 24-hour sampling periods. The detection limit was shown to be as little as 100 ng NO2 in laboratory studies. This solid absorbent method provides a simple, convenient, and compact means for air sampling. 相似文献

Environmental disputes arise due to opposing views of various groups about their environmental concerns and their economic
or developmental interests. Development and protection of the environment constitute two main contradictory objectives within
the sustainable development paradigm, which are often in conflict. The decision support system, GMCR II, which implements
the graph model for conflict resolution, is employed to model and analyze an environmental dispute arising over the construction
of a new freeway between the Iranian capital, Tehran, and the city of Chalous located in the north of the country. This study
demonstrates that the graph model for conflict resolution can be used as a methodology to promote a reasonable balance between
economic development and environmental protection from a strategic viewpoint. In addition to systematically modelling the
conflict by putting the existing information into proper perspective, it is shown how conflict analysis can be used for comparing
alternative scenarios and predicting possible future outcomes.
