ABSTRACT

Intensity and threshold dilution ratio are two important indices for odor control of swine buildings. Although odor threshold dilution ratio is a widely used index to describe an odor, it should be related to intensity to be more useful. A method was proposed to measure both indices simultaneously by using a dynamic forced-choice olfacto-meter. Four air samples were taken from each of four swine rooms including farrowing, finisher, gestation, and nursery. A panel of eight people was used to evaluate odor intensity. Odor threshold dilution ratios were calculated according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard Practice E679-91 to be 333, 424, 25, and 221 for samples collected from farrowing, finisher, gestation, and nursery rooms, respectively. After the samples were diluted 14.7 times, the odor intensities were evaluated to be 3.79, 3.46, 0.48, and 4.0 for the above-mentioned rooms, respectively. The data collected were used to develop a mathematical model.  相似文献

Increased participation in resource management decisions by a wide range of stakeholders has been widely advocated, and has recently been formally incorporated into the European Water Framework Directive. However, achieving such participation has generally proved to be problematical. In response to locally perceived needs, a project was set up in the Ythan catchment in northeast Scotland, to undertake catchment management actions with increased public involvement. This paper outlines the methods used to increase public participation in such actions, and some preliminary assessments of the effectiveness of these. The experience of the project and the lessons learnt, including some of the difficulties of ensuring fully representative stakeholder involvement, are discussed in relation to published criteria for public participation in resource management.  相似文献

In the last 5 yr, the capabilities of earth-observing satellites and the technological tools to share and use satellite data have advanced sufficiently to consider using satellite imagery in conjunction with ground-based data for urban-scale air quality monitoring. Satellite data can add synoptic and geospatial information to ground-based air quality data and modeling. An assessment of the integrated use of ground-based and satellite data for air quality monitoring, including several short case studies, was conducted. Findings identified current U.S. satellites with potential for air quality applications, with others available internationally and several more to be launched within the next 5 yr; several of these sensors are described in this paper as illustrations. However, use of these data for air quality applications has been hindered by historical lack of collaboration between air quality and satellite scientists, difficulty accessing and understanding new data, limited resources and agency priorities to develop new techniques, ill-defined needs, and poor understanding of the potential and limitations of the data. Specialization in organizations and funding sources has limited the resources for cross-disciplinary projects. To successfully use these new data sets requires increased collaboration between organizations, streamlined access to data, and resources for project implementation.  相似文献

A reliable analytical method has been developed using GC-ECNIMS for the determination of individual toxaphene congeners in ambient air. To allow a reasonable comparison with previous data for toxaphene reported by Muir and co-workers using GC-ECD, this method has adopted their approach of focussing upon the identification and quantification of specific peaks or clusters ("T" species) typically observed in environmental samples, with the sum of these "T" species then being reported as "total toxaphene". Technical toxaphene has been used as the analytical standard, but independent response factors have been assigned to the target peaks and clusters. Because of the appreciable variability in ECNIMS response shown by individual toxaphene congeners, this is considered to be a reasonable and potentially more accurate procedure than the application of a "single response factor" used by many other workers. The methodology has been used for the determination of toxaphene in air samples collected over the annual cycle in 1992 and then from October 1995 to September 1997 at Point Petre, Ontario. Of the forty-four calibrated components, only 10 were detected in all of the air samples collected over the latter 2-year period. Airborne concentrations of toxaphene (defined as the sum of the calibrated components) range from 0.9 pg/m3 to 10.1 pg/m3. A clear seasonality has been observed, with a summer-to-winter concentration ratio of about 6.  相似文献

Abstract

Satellite sensors have provided new datasets for monitoring regional and urban air quality. Satellite sensors provide comprehensive geospatial information on air quality with both qualitative imagery and quantitative data, such as aerosol optical depth. Yet there has been limited application of these new datasets in the study of air pollutant sources relevant to public policy. One promising approach to more directly link satellite sensor data to air quality policy is to integrate satellite sensor data with air quality parameters and models. This paper presents a visualization technique to integrate satellite sensor data, ground-based data, and back trajectory analysis relevant to a new rule concerning the transport of particulate matter across state boundaries. Overlaying satellite aerosol optical depth data and back trajectories in the days leading up to a known fine particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of <2.5 μm (PM2.5) event may indicate whether transport or local sources appear to be most responsible for high PM2.5 levels in a certain location at a certain time. Events in five cities in the United States are presented as case studies. This type of analysis can be used to help understand the source locations of pollutants during specific events and to support regulatory compliance decisions in cases of long distance transport.  相似文献

We report the first positive prenatal diagnosis ofcongenital non-bullous ichthyosiform erythroderma or lamellar ichthyosis. Fetal skin samples were obtained by fetoscopy at 21 weeks' gestation and examined by light and electron microscopy. Light microscopy revealed a thickened interfollicular epidermis with multiple layers of flattened cells and excessive keratinization of the epidermal lining of the follicular infundibulum. Electron microscopy of the thickened epidermis revealed granular cells that contained larger-than-normal keratohyalin granules and multiple layers of parakeratotic cornified cells. Although there was regional variation in the degree of interfollicular keratinization, follicles from all regions showed greater and more complete keratinization, indicating that they express the abnormality early enough in development to permit prenatal diagnosis at about 20 weeks' gestation.  相似文献

In the northern Rocky Mountains, whitebark pine ( Pinus albicaulis ) is rapidly declining as a result of previous fire exclusion policies, mountain pine beetle ( Dendroctonus ponderosae ) outbreaks, and white pine blister rust ( Cronartium ribicola ). Blister rust is potentially the most destructive agent, killing seedlings, cone-bearing branches, and, eventually, mature trees. We examined densities of whitebark pine regeneration and the incidence and severity of blister-rust infection of seedlings and saplings in the 25-year-old Sundance Burn in the Selkirk Range of northern Idaho, an area heavily infected by blister rust. We found that the mean regeneration density of whitebark pine was significantly lower than that of two other comparably aged burns in western Montana. The low density was attributed to the severe damage to the seed source on the burn perimeter, resulting from previous infestation of mountain pine beetle and blister rust. Overall, 29% of the whitebark pine regeneration in the Sundance Burn was infected by blister rust. Age and height of seedlings were important predictors of incidence of infection, and height was the most important predictor of severity of infection. Thus, as seedlings grow larger, they present a bigger target to airborne blister-rust spores. Because of the lack of seed production in the adjacent forest and expected mortality, regeneration of whitebark pine in the Sundance Burn will be slow. In areas of northern Idaho and northwestern Montana affected by blister rust and pine beetle, prescribed fires for managing whitebark pine ecosystems should be restricted to small areas or should require plantings of rust-resistant seedlings.  相似文献
