Analyses of ambient measured ozone data were used in conjunction with the application of photochemical modeling to determine the technical feasibility of attaining the federal 8-hr ozone standard in central California. Various combinations of volatile organic compound (VOC) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emission reductions were effective in lowering modeled peak 1-hr ozone concentrations. However, VOC emissions reductions were found to have only a modest impact on modeled peak 8-hr ozone concentrations. NOx emission reductions generally lowered 8-hr ozone concentrations, but their effectiveness was partially or, in some cases, wholly offset by the increase in the number of NO cycles and, hence, in the ozone produced per NO. As a result, substantial NOx emission reductions--70 to 90%--were required to reduce peak 8-hr ozone concentrations to the level of the standard throughout the modeling domain. These modeling results provide a possible physical explanation for recent analyses that have reported more prominent trends in peak 1-hr ozone levels than in peak 8-hr ozone concentrations or in occurrences of mid-level (60-90 parts per billion by volume) ozone concentrations. The findings also have serious implications for the feasibility of attaining the 8-hr ozone standard in central California. Further efforts are needed to clarify the applicability of the modeling results to the full set of days with ozone levels exceeding the 8-hr ozone standard, as well as their applicability to other geographical areas. 相似文献

A field-based system used to quantify the response of acid grassland to reduced atmospheric nitrogen and sulphur deposition, and to investigate the effects of elevated soil temperature on acid grassland development is described. The system is based on 12 retractable roofs, covering undisturbed experimental plots of acid grassland and three controls. Nine roofs are used to exclude natural precipitation and three roofs used to retain emitted IR radiation at night. An irrigation system has been developed to simulate natural precipitation, allowing for the application of specific treatment regimes of ambient, reduced nitrogen and reduced nitrogen/sulphur deposition beneath the nine rain exclusion plots. Plant, soil parameters, leachate chemistry and gaseous fluxes are being monitored and initial results on soil water chemistry are described. Warming appeared to enhance nitrate concentrations in soil water but this was not sustained beyond the first year of treatment. In contrast, the deposition reduction treatments decreased soil water nitrate concentrations within a few weeks of reducing deposition. This was not observed for other solutes such as sulphate or ammonium suggesting a more direct link between deposition of nitrate and leaching losses. 相似文献

Many organisms have been reported to have movement patterns that are well approximated as Lévy walks. This is typically because distributions of straight line distances between consecutive significant turns in movement paths have heavy power law tails. This diagnostic tool has been called into question because there is currently no standard, unambiguous way to identify significant turns. Even if such a way could be found, statistical analyses based on significant turns cannot account for actual movements made between turns and as a consequence cannot distinguish between true Lévy walks and other fractal random walks such as Lévy modulated correlated random walks where organisms randomly meander rather than move in straight lines between consecutive reorientation events. Here, I show that structure functions (i.e. moments of net displacements made across fixed time intervals) can distinguish between different kinds of Lévy walks and between Lévy walks and random walks with a few scales such as composite correlated random walks and correlated random walks. Distinguishing between these processes will lead to a better understanding of how and why animals perform Lévy walks and help bridge the apparent divide between correlated random walks and Lévy walks. Structure functions do not require turn identification and instead take account of entire movement paths. Using this diagnostic tool, I bolster previous claims that honeybees use a movement strategy that can be approximated by Lévy walks when searching for their hive. I also show how structure functions can be used to establish the extent of self-similar behaviour in meandering Lévy walks. 相似文献

Honeybees (Apis mellifera) are regularly faced with the task of navigating back to their hives from remote food sources. They have evolved several methods to do this, including compass-directed “vector” flights and the use of landmarks. If these hive-centered mechanisms are disrupted, bees revert to searching for the hive, using an optimal Lévy flight searching strategy. The same strategy is adopted when a food source at a known location ceases to be available. Here, we show that the programming for this Lévy strategy does not need to be very sophisticated or clever on the bee’s part, as Lévy flight patterns can be derived from the Weber–Fechner law in a bee’s odometer. Odometry errors of a different kind occur in desert ants (Cataglyphis spp., Melophorus bagoti). The searching behaviors of these ants are very similar in overall structure to that of honeybees but do not display any Lévy flight characteristics. We suggest that errors in the estimation of distance can be implicitly involved in shaping the structure of systematic search behavior and should not be regarded as merely deficiencies in the odometer. 相似文献

This study assessed metals in water and different tissues of Labeo rohita and the impact of these metals on DNA and proteins as biomarkers of gills and muscles of these fish from three different polluted sites (reference or low = KW, medium = CH and high = SK) of the Indus River, Pakistan. The Mn, Pb, Cu, Zn, Hg, and Cr levels in water, gills, liver, muscles, and skin of these fish were compared with the international permissible levels. All metals except Pb and Hg in water were within the acceptable limits of drinking water. In contrast, the Mn, Hg, and Cr levels in the fish tissues were higher than their permissible limits for fish as a human food. Here, the gills contained higher metals than the other tissues. Different patterns of biomarkers were found in fish from these sites. While the gills did not show four protein bands (55, 30, 18.4, and 16.4 kDa), the muscles showed four new protein bands (100, 85, 45, and 20 kDa) for fish from the medium and high polluted sites as compared to the reference or low polluted site. The fish from the CH and SK sites of the Indus River contained low molecular weight DNA in their gills but high molecular weight DNA in their muscles when compared with the KW site. This study suggests that the proteins and DNA profiles of L. rohita could be used as biomarkers to assess the impact of potential environmental stressors such as metals on the freshwater systems. 相似文献

Bumblebees forage uninterrupted for long periods of time because they are not distracted by sex or territorial defense and have few predators. This has led to a long running debate about whether bumblebees forage optimally. This debate has been enriched by the possibility that bumblebees foraging within clover patches have flight patterns that can be approximated by Lévy flights. Such flight patterns optimise the success of random searches. Bumblebees foraging within a flower patch tend to approach the nearest flower but then often depart without landing or probing it if it has been visited previously; unvisited flowers are not rejected in this manner. Here, this foraging behaviour has been replicated in numerical simulations. Lévy flight patterns are found to be an inconsequential emergent property of a bumblebees’ foraging behaviour. Lévy flights are predicted to emerge when bees reject at least 99% of previously visited flowers. A foraging bumblebee can certainly empty a clover flower head of nectar in one visit, but lower rates of rejection are observed for many other flowers. These findings suggest that Lévy flight patterns in foraging bumblebees are rare and specific to a few flower species and that if they exist, then they are not part of an innate, evolved optimal searching strategy. 相似文献

We develop a stochastic model for the time-evolution of scalar concentrations and temporal gradients in concentration experienced
by observers moving within inhomogeneous plumes that are dispersing within turbulent flows. In this model, scalar concentrations
and their gradients evolve jointly as a Markovian process. Underlying the model formulation is a natural generalisation of
Thomson’s well mixed condition [Thomson DJ (1987) J Fluid Mech 180:529–556]. As a consequence model outputs are necessarily
compatible with statistical properties of scalars observed in experiment that are used here as model input. We then use the
model to examine how insects aloft within the atmospheric boundary-layer can locate odour sources by modulating their flight
patterns in response to odour cues. Mechanisms underlying odour-mediated flights have been studied extensively at laboratory-scale
but an understanding of these flights over landscape scales is still lacking. Insect flights are simulated by combining the
stochastic model with a simple model of insect olfactory response. These simulations show the strong influence of wind speed
on the distributions of the times taken by insects to locate the source. In accordance with experimental observations [Baker
TC, Vickers NJ (1997) In: Insect pheromone research: new directions, pp 248–264; Mafra-Neto A, Cardé RT (1994) Nature 369:142–144],
flight patterns are predicted to become straighter and shorter, and source location is predicted to become more likely as
the mean wind speed increases. The most probable arrival time to the source decreases with the mean wind speed. It is shown
that scale-free movement patterns arising from olfactory-driven foraging stem directly from the power-law distribution of
concentration excursion times above/below a threshold level and are robust with respect to variations in Reynolds number.
Flight lengths are well represented by a power law distribution in agreement with the observed patterns of foraging bumblebees

Amount or pattern? Grassland responses to the heterogeneity and availability of two key resources 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Patterns of resource availability and heterogeneity shape the composition, productivity, and dynamics of plant assemblages in a wide variety of terrestrial ecosystems. Despite this, the responses of plant assemblages to simultaneous changes in the availability and heterogeneity of more than a single resource are virtually unknown. To fill this gap, microcosms consisting of assemblages formed by Lolium perenne, Plantago lanceolata, Anthoxantum odoratum, Holcus lanatus, and Trifolium repens were grown in a factorial experiment with the following treatments: nutrient availability (NA), water availability (WA), spatial nutrient heterogeneity (NH), and temporal water heterogeneity (WH). Assemblages exhibited precise root foraging patterns in response to nutrient heterogeneity, which were modified by NA and WA. A series of two- and three-way interactions involving the four factors evaluated determined biomass production, the belowground: aboveground biomass ratio, the patterns of root biomass allocation with depth, and the relative contribution to aboveground biomass of Lolium and Anthoxanthum. In all cases, these interactions explained significant amounts of the variation found in the data. Our study demonstrates that considering the interactions between resource availability and heterogeneity allows for a refinement of predictions that can detectably reduce the error associated with extrapolating from single factor analyses. 相似文献

Summary Seasonal changes in sex ratios during a 4-year study of red-necked phalaropes and a 3-year study of Wilson's phalaropes showed that females preceded males to breeding and/or courtship areas. The degree to which females preceded males may have been constrained by harsh weather, as the arrival of red-necked phalaropes was synchronous in 1983, when spring was unusually late. Neither sex defended territories; females competed vigorously for direct access to males. These findings show that selection for sexually asynchronous arrival need not act through territoriality. We interpret early female arrival as an adaptation for obtaining mates and coclude that sexual selection may be an important determinant of arrival times in mate defense social systems. 相似文献

The uptake of inorganic and non-nutritive organic molecules has been compared with uptake of nutritive molecules by the articulate brachiopod Terebratalia transversa (Sowerby). Only minimal uptake of Na2
14CO3 and 14C-urea was observed, while 14C-glucose was concentrated extensively. After administration of a dilute solution of 14C-glucose over timed intervals, whole organ counts and autoradiographs showed that labelled material was accumulated along the exposed ciliated epidermal tissue of the lophophore and mantle and concentrated along the peritoneal lining of the coelom even before appearing in the gastrointestinal tract. The presence or absence of bacteria had little discernible effect upon extent and rate of uptake. The uptake experiments suggest that the lophophore not only creates an inhalent and exnalent current as is common in other filter-feeders, but also appears to be adapted for extraction of dilute nutrients in seawater. This ability of the lophophore to extract nutrients may help explain the evolutionary trend of the lengthening of the articulate lophophore and the reduction of the intestine to a short blind-ended gut.This work was supported by National Science Foundation Grant GB-20067. 相似文献
