We report observations on spawning and early development in bone-eating worms of the genus Osedax. Individual females of Osedax rubiplumus were observed at 1820 m depth freely spawning hundreds of oocytes, and females of an undescribed species, Osedax “orange collar”, were observed spawning in laboratory aquaria. Cytological and molecular analysis of the spawned oocytes of two Osedax species revealed no evidence for the bacterial endosymbionts that the female worms require for their nutrition, suggesting that the bacteria must be acquired later from the environment, as they are in other siboglinids. Individual O. “orange collar” females released an average of 335 (±130) eggs per day, but the number of oocytes spawned per day varied greatly, suggesting that not all the females spawned daily. Fertilization rates of the spawned oocytes varied from 0 to 100%, though most females showed nearly 100% fertilization rates. Oocytes spawned in the laboratory at 4–6°C were negatively buoyant. If fertilized, these oocytes extruded polar bodies and then after at least four hours cleaved unequally. Subsequent cleavages occurred in a spiral pattern at roughly 2-h intervals, resulting in free-swimming trochophore larvae after 24 h. These lecithotrophic trochophores swam for 9–16 days before settling with several hooked chaetae, similar to those of dwarf Osedax males. The larval life span of the Osedax species studied in the laboratory appears to be shorter than in closely related Vestimentifera. Osedax rubiplumus, on the other hand, has much larger oocytes and so may have greater dispersal potential than these other Osedax species. The high fecundity and apparently continuous reproduction of Osedax boneworms permits the opportunistic exploitation of sunken vertebrate bones. Ornamental traits are thought to evolve because they give individuals an advantage in securing multiple mates. Thus, the presence of ornamentation among males in many monogamous bird species presents something of a conundrum. Under certain conditions, extra-pair paternity can increase the variance in reproductive success among males, thus increasing the potential for sexual selection to act. We addressed this possibility in the mountain bluebird (Sialia currucoides), a socially monogamous songbird in which males possess brilliant ultraviolet (UV)-blue plumage. Specifically, we asked whether a male’s success at siring offspring within his own nest and within the nests of other males was related to his coloration. In pairwise comparisons, males that sired extra-pair offspring were not more colorful than the males that they cuckolded. However, males that sired at least one extra-pair offspring were, on average, brighter and more UV-blue than males that did not sire extra-pair offspring. Brighter, more UV-blue males sired more offspring both with their own mate and tended to sire more offspring with extra-pair mates and thus sired more offspring overall. Our results support the hypothesis that the brilliant UV-blue ornamental plumage of male mountain bluebirds evolved at least in part because it provides males with an advantage in fertilizing the eggs of multiple females.  相似文献

Linyphiid spiders have evolved the ability to disperse long distances by a process known as ballooning. It has been hypothesized that ballooning may allow populations to persist in the highly disturbed agricultural areas that the spiders prefer. In this study, I develop a stochastic population model to explore how the propensity for this type of long distance dispersal influences long term population persistence in a heterogeneous landscape where catastrophic mortality events are common. Analysis of this model indicates that although some dispersal does indeed decrease the probability of extinction of the population, the frequency of dispersal is only important in certain extremes. Instead, both the mean population birth and death rates, and the landscape composition, are much more important in determining the probability of extinction than the dispersal process. Thus, in order to develop effective conservation strategies for these spiders, better understanding of life history processes should be prioritized over an understanding of dispersal strategies.  相似文献

Life-history trade-offs allow many animals to maintain reproductive fitness across a range of climatic conditions. When used by parasites and pathogens, these strategies may influence patterns of disease in changing climates. The chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, is linked to global declines of amphibian populations. Short-term growth in culture is maximal at 17 degrees-25 degrees C. This has been used in an argument that global warming, which increases the time that amphibians spend at these temperatures in cloud-covered montane environments, has led to extinctions. Here we show that the amphibian chytrid responds to decreasing temperatures with trade-offs that increase fecundity as maturation rate slows and increase infectivity as growth decreases. At 17 degrees-25 degrees C, infectious zoospores encyst (settle and develop a cell wall) and develop into the zoospore-producing stage (zoosporangium) faster, while at 7 degrees-10 degrees C, greater numbers of zoospores are produced per zoosporangium; these remain infectious for a longer period of time. We modeled the population growth of B. dendrobatidis through time at various temperatures using delayed differential equations and observational data for four parameters: developmental rate of thalli, fecundity, rate of zoospore encystment, and rate of zoospore survival. From the models, it is clear that life-history trade-offs allow B. dendrobatidis to maintain a relatively high long-term growth rate at low temperatures, so that it maintains high fitness across a range of temperatures. When a seven-day cold shock is simulated, the outcome is intermediate between the two constant temperature regimes, and in culture, a sudden drop in temperature induces zoospore release. These trade-offs can be ecologically important for a variety of organisms with complex life histories, including pathogenic microorganisms. The effect of temperature on amphibian mortality will depend on the interaction between fungal growth and host immune function and will be modified by host ecology, behavior, and life history. These results demonstrate that B. dendrobatidis populations can grow at high rates across a broad range of environmental temperatures and help to explain why it is so successful in cold montane environments.  相似文献

Photostability of azadirachtin-A, a neem based pesticide, was studied in the presence of non-ionic surfactants. Surfactants such as Span-80, Atlox 3400B, Tween-80, Agrimul 52B, and Agrimul N4S enhanced the rate of photodegradation of azadirachtin-A, whereas surfactants such as Triton-X, Emulsol CFA, Tween-20, Emulsol MAS, and Emulsol-N-33 decreased the rate of degradation. Emulsol-N-33 was found to be the most effective surfactant, as half life of azadirachin-A in the presence of Emulsol-N-33 was found to be 94.93 min in comparison to 48 min for azadirachtin-A alone under UV light.  相似文献

The accumulation of substances associated with PM2.5 [polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metals] on leaves of Pyrus calleryana (pear) and Tiliaxeuchlora (linden) along an urban road was investigated. These species have similar leaf morphology and were exposed to the identical environmental conditions. The accumulation of both PAHs and metals per leaf area was significantly higher on linden leaves than on pear leaves.  相似文献

The evolution of NOx from grass and maize silages wasmeasured using chemiluminescence in samples kept in airtightcontainers, in the silos and in a 750 kg mass removed to a mixer waggon. Measurements were made on the grass and maizesilos in two consecutive years. The results show that thereis continuous evolution of NOx after silos have been opened and that high concentrations persist in the mass whichare rapidly released on agitation at the feed-out. The maximumrecorded concentrations of NO and NO2 were 1985 and 152 ppbv respectively. These values are orders of magnitude greaterthan for rural background levels and exceed the maximum hourlyexposure of 50 ppbv for NO2 recommended by the UK expertpanel for quality standards.  相似文献

Radiocaesium (137Cs) activity concentrations and aggregated transfer factors (Tag values) were calculated for vascular plants, fungal fruiting bodies and invertebrates in a semi-natural Picea sitchensis woodland (Lady Wood) adjacent to the British Nuclear Fuels plc. reprocessing facility at Sellafield, Cumbria, UK. The Tag values for vascular plants ranged from 7.1 x 10(-4) - 1.9 x 10(-2) m2 kg(-1), the maximum value being for Pteridium aquilinum. Fungal fruiting bodies had higher Tag values (1.9 x 10(-3) - 1.8 x 10(-1) m2 kg(-1)) than vascular plants, with a maximum value for Mycena galericulata. None of the activity concentrations for edible foodstuffs collected within this study (fungi and berries) exceeded the EC recommended limits of 137Cs in foodstuffs grown within the UK. The invertebrate community sampled during the study had Tag values ranging from 3.4 x 10(-4) to 1.3 x 10(-2) m2 kg(-1). There were no systematic differences in 137Cs activity concentration between invertebrate guilds, or between seasonal cohorts within guilds. The invertebrates in Lady Wood were exposed to a dose from 137Cs (internal gamma + beta and external gamma) ranging between 4.37 x 10(-4) and 6.40 x 10(-4) mGy day(-1). Including dose from radionuclides other than 137Cs and accounting for uncertainties due to the relative biological effectiveness of differing radionuclides could increase total dose by approximately an order of magnitude. These dose rates are at least three orders of magnitude lower than the 1 mGy d(-1) level at which harm may be caused to terrestrial biota, hence the risk to the invertebrate community from the effects of ionising radiation in Lady Wood is low.  相似文献

Large and repeated manure applications can exceed the P sorption capacity of soil and increase P leaching and losses through subsurface drainage. The objective of this study was to evaluate the fate of P applied with increasing N rates in dairy wastewater or poultry litter on grassland during a 4-yr period. In addition to P recovery in forage, soil-test phosphorus (STP) was monitored at depths to 180 cm in a Darco loamy sand (loamy, siliceous, semiactive, thermic Grossarenic Paleudults) twice annually. A split-plot arrangement of a randomized complete block design comprised four annual N rates (0, 250, 500, and 1000 kg ha(-1)) for each nutrient source on coastal bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] over-seeded with ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L. cv. TAM90). Increasing annual rates of N and P in wastewater and poultry litter increased P removal in forage (P = 0.001). At the highest N rate of each nutrient source, less than 13% of applied P was recovered in forage. The highest N rates delivered 8 times more P in wastewater or 15 times more P in poultry litter than was removed in forage harvests during an average year. Compared with controls, annual P rates up to 188 kg ha(-1) in dairy wastewater did not increase STP concentrations at depths below 30 cm. In contrast, the highest annual P rate (590 kg ha(-1)) in poultry litter increased STP above that of controls at depth intervals to 120 cm during the first year of sampling. Increases in STP at depths below 30 cm in the Darco soil were indicative of excessive P rates that could contribute to nonpoint-source pollution in outflows from subsoil through subsurface drainage.  相似文献
