Microbial remediation of nitro-aromatic compounds: an overview   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
Nitro-aromatic compounds are produced by incomplete combustion of fossil fuel or nitration reactions and are used as chemical feedstock for synthesis of explosives, pesticides, herbicides, dyes, pharmaceuticals, etc. The indiscriminate use of nitro-aromatics in the past due to wide applications has resulted in inexorable environmental pollution. Hence, nitro-aromatics are recognized as recalcitrant and given Hazardous Rating-3. Although several conventional pump and treat clean up methods are currently in use for the removal of nitro-aromatics, none has proved to be sustainable. Recently, remediation by biological systems has attracted worldwide attention to decontaminate nitro-aromatics polluted sources. The incredible versatility inherited in microbes has rendered these compounds as a part of the biogeochemical cycle. Several microbes catalyze mineralization and/or non-specific transformation of nitro-aromatics either by aerobic or anaerobic processes. Aerobic degradation of nitro-aromatics applies mainly to mono-, dinitro-derivatives and to some extent to poly-nitro-aromatics through oxygenation by: (i) monooxygenase, (ii) dioxygenase catalyzed reactions, (iii) Meisenheimer complex formation, and (iv) partial reduction of aromatic ring. Under anaerobic conditions, nitro-aromatics are reduced to amino-aromatics to facilitate complete mineralization. The nitro-aromatic explosives from contaminated sediments are effectively degraded at field scale using in situ bioremediation strategies, while ex situ techniques using whole cell/enzyme(s) immobilized on a suitable matrix/support are gaining acceptance for decontamination of nitrophenolic pesticides from soils at high chemical loading rates. Presently, the qualitative and quantitative performance of biological approaches of remediation is undergoing improvement due to: (i) knowledge of catabolic pathways of degradation, (ii) optimization of various parameters for accelerated degradation, and (iii) design of microbe(s) through molecular biology tools, capable of detoxifying nitro-aromatic pollutants. Among them, degradative plasmids have provided a major handle in construction of recombinant strains. Although recombinants designed for high performance seem to provide a ray of hope, their true assessment under field conditions is required to address ecological considerations for sustainable bioremediation.  相似文献

Language‐based diversity is a relatively understudied area within diversity research. Drawing upon the social identity‐based fault lines literature, the present paper describes the effects of language‐based diversity within organizations operating in India. Interview‐based findings indicate that organizationally mandated languages are occasionally disregarded by employees in both national and multinational organizations. Respondents noted how even benign and momentary language switching can lead to the formation of language‐based groups and cause negative consequences such as feelings of being devalued. Respondents also noted strategies that let them attenuate negative effects of multilingualism while simultaneously leveraging its benefits. Overall, the present study indicates that momentary exclusion based on incomprehensible language, when experienced on a daily basis, may have a far‐reaching influence on individual and team functioning. Estuaries and tidal creeks, harboring mangroves particularly, face tremendous anthropogenic pressures. Expansion of mega cities and the thermal power plants are generally proposed in the vicinity of estuaries and creek, due to the feasibility of intake and discharge of water for cooling. Discharges from such developments remain constant threat of increasing thermal pollution and affecting the quality of environment. The baseline information on prevailing quality of aquatic environment comes handy for understanding alterations due to such activities. Principle component analysis (PCA) revealed that temperature, pH, salinity, suspended solids, DO, BOD and phaeophytins are major parameters influencing the creek system. Heated effluents may have direct and adverse impacts on these parameters, altering biotic constituents. Hence, periodic and detailed observations are necessary to estimate exact response of biotic communities to changing environment. The present paper is based on case study, projecting a power plant in the vicinity of major mangrove habitats of Dharamtar creek.  相似文献

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) is a widely used bio-ceramic in the fields of orthopedics and dentistry. This study investigates the machinability of nano-crystalline HAP (nHAP) bio-ceramic in end milling operations, using uncoated carbide tool under dry cutting conditions. Efforts are focused on the effects of various machining conditions on surface integrity. A first order surface roughness model for the end milling of nHAP was developed using response surface methodology (RSM), relating surface roughness to the cutting parameters: cutting speed, feed, and depth of cut. Model analysis showed that all three cutting parameters have significant effect on surface roughness. However, the current model has limited statistical predictive power and a higher order model is desired. Furthermore, tool wear and chip morphology was studied. Machined surface analysis showed that the surface integrity was good, and material removal was caused by brittle fracture without plastic flow.  相似文献

此文以霸县凹陷文安斜坡和饶阳凹陷留楚构造为研究对象,对比了斜坡区和隆起区断裂密集带的特征及其对不同构造部位油气分布的控制作用。在三维地震资料、钻井资料和已发现油气藏特征的基础上,利用断裂密集带识别方法和分类方案,识别出文安斜坡和留楚构造的断裂密集带,并对其进行了分类。对比两种构造部位断裂密集带发育的差异性及对油气分布的控制作用,认为隆起区(留楚构造)相对于斜坡区(文安斜坡)断裂密集带发育数量较少,规模大,斜坡区断裂密集带主要以顺向背形断裂密集带为主,而隆起区主要以屋脊背形断裂密集带为主,隆起区油气主要分布在顺向背形断裂密集带内,斜坡区主要分布在屋脊背形断裂密集带内部及靠近生烃中心的边部。  相似文献

The HOBAS aeration system was tested to compare changes in environmental and bacteriological parameters in ponds growing Penaeus monodon during a single production cycle. The stocking density in the aerated pond was doubled to 12 post-larvae (PL) m???2 in contrast to the non-aerated pond with 6 (PL) m???2. Microbial abundance in the ponds ranged between 105???6 cells ml???1. Among the physiological groups of bacteria enumerated, the heterotrophs dominated with an abundance of 104 CFU ml???1. Of the nitrogen and sulfur cycle bacteria, the nitrifiers flourished in the aerated pond and could maintain ammonia-N concentration within permissible levels. Bacterial activity also maintained sulfide concentrations at <?0.03 mg l???1. Non-aerated conditions promoted denitrification maintaining nitrate concentration between 0.32 and 0.98 μM NO3 ???-N l???1. However, a marked increase in ammonium content was observed in the non-aerated pond at the end of the culture period. Thus in high-density ponds, the aerators served to stimulate bacterial growth and activity which consequently maintained the quality of the water to match that of low-density ponds. Accordingly, these aerators could be effectively used to sustain higher yields. The effluent from the aerated pond is less likely to alter the redox balance of the receiving waters.  相似文献

The acetamiprid, a nenicotinoid insecticide, is a popular crop protection agent used in fields as well as in protected cultivation. A laboratory experiment was conditions to study the effect of light, moisture, and pH on the persistence of acetamiprid in water and soil. Dissipation half-lives of acetamiprid in water at pH 4, 7, and 9 were 6.2, 7.3, and 5.1 days, respectively, and 4.3 days under UV and sunlight conditions. Half-life in soil at three concentrations, 0.1, 1.0, and 10 μg g?1 under different moisture regimes varied from 21.5–22.8, 15.6–22.4, 10.0–15.8 days, respectively, indicating that acetamiprid dissipated faster in submerged soil as compared to field capacity moisture and dry conditions. The leaching study showed that the possibility for leaching of acetamiprid to ground water is extremely low under normal condition of average rainfall due to compact nature soil in the field. Acetamiprid poses low risks to the ecosystem because of their rapid dissipation and low-bound residues in the environment.  相似文献

Contemporary socio-economic transformations in South Asia are creating increasingly serious water problems (scarcity, flooding, pollution) and conflicts. Conflicts over water distribution, water-derived benefits, and risks often play out along axes of social differentiation like caste, wealth, and gender. Those with least power, rights, and voice suffer lack of access, exclusion, dispossession, and further marginalisation, resulting in livelihood insecurity or increased vulnerability to risks. In this paper we propose analysing these problems as problems of justice – problems of distribution, recognition, and political participation. Drawing on wider environmental justice approaches, a specific water justice focus needs to include both the specific characteristics of water as a resource and the access, rights, and equity dimensions of its control. We argue that recognising water problems as problems of justice requires a re-politicisation of water, as mainstream approaches to water resources, water governance, and legislation tend to normalise or naturalise their – basically political – distributional assumptions and implications. An interdisciplinary approach that sees water as simultaneously natural (material) and social is important here. We illustrate these conceptual and theoretical suggestions with evidence from India.  相似文献
