The background concentrations of atmospheric CFC-11 and CFC-12were monitored to assess their impact on stratospheric ozone depletion and global warming from September 1995 to March 1999 at Kosan, Korea, located at eastern margin of the Asian Continent. The concentrations of atmospheric CFC-11 at Kosan have decreased slightly, at a rate of –2.5 pptv yr-1, over the period in response to the Montreal Protocol. The CFC-12 mixing ratio at Kosan continues to increase in the atmosphere at a rate of 5.7 pptv yr-1 despite international regulations, because of its extreme atmosphere persistence. Recent trends ofthese two chlorofluorocarbons at Kosan, Korea were concordant with those of the northern hemispheric background monitored unitat Mauna Loa, Hawaii. The maximum seasonal mean mixing ratios of CFC-11 and CFC-12 at Kosan, Korea, were 270±4 pptv inthe spring and 538±9 pptv in the winter, and the corresponding seasonal minima were 267±7 and 529±12 pptv. This occurred in the summer and was due to southeasterlywinds from the northwestern Pacific Ocean. By performing a three-day isentropic backward trajectory analysis, it was shownthat air masses at Kosan, and with the exception of summer, mainly originated from central and northern China. Study on Size Distribution of Total Aerosol and Water-Soluble Ions During an Asian Dust Storm Event at Jeju Island, Korea 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Soil dust particles transported from loess regions of the Asian continent, called Asian dust, highly influences the air quality of north-eastern Asia and the northern Pacific Ocean. In order to investigate the effects of these dust storms on the chemical composition of atmospheric aerosol particles with different size, measurements of size distributions of total aerosol and major ion species were carried out on Jeju Island, Korea during April 2001. Juju Island was chosen for the study because the levels of emissions of anthropogenic air pollutants are very low. A 5-stage cascade impactor was used to sample size-fractionated aerosol particles. Samples were analyzed for major water-soluble ions using Dionex DX-120 ion chromatograph. The average mass concentration of total aerosol was found to be 24.4 and 108.3 microg m(-3) for non-Asian dust and Asian dust periods, respectively. The total aerosol size distribution, measured during the non-Asian dust period, was bimodal, whereas the coarse particles dominated the size distribution of total aerosol during the Asian dust period. It was found that SO4(2-), NH4+ and K+ were mainly distributed in fine particles, while Cl-, NO3-, Na+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ were in coarse particles. Although SO4(2-) was mainly distributed in fine particles, during the Asian dust period, the concentrations in coarse particles were significantly increased. This indicates heterogeneous oxidation of SO2 on wet surfaces of basic soil dust particles. The NH4+ was found to exist as (NH4)2SO4 in fine particles, with a molar ratio of NH4+ to SO4(2-) of 2.37 and 1.52 for non-Asian dust and Asian dust periods, respectively. Taking into account the proximity of the sampling site to the sea, and the observed chloride depletion, coarse mode nitrate, during the non-Asian dust period, is assumed to originate from the reaction of nitric acid with sodium chloride on the surfaces of sea-salt particles although the chloride depletion was not shown to be large enough to prove this assumption. During the Asian dust period, however, chloride depletion was much smaller, indicating coarse nitrate particles were mainly produced by the reaction of nitric acid with surfaces of basic soil particles. Most chloride and sodium components were shown to originate from sea-salt particles. Asian dust aerosols, arriving at Jeju Island, contained considerable amounts of sea-salt particles as they passed over the Yellow Sea. Ca2+ was shown to be the most abundant species in Asian dust particles. 相似文献

A joint monitoring of dust-storms that occurred in East Asia from March until May 2003 has been carried. Our discussions include
dust-storm observations in the source areas of China and Mongolia, and measurements with satellites and ground monitors in
central Korea. Differences were found in the definition and measurement of dust-storms. Over the source area of Mongolia there
were 6 dusty days in March, 18 days in April, and 10 dusty days in May. In Inner Mongolia of northern China there were 4 dust-storms
with 14 dusty days observed over the three months. In central Korea, a sink area, there were 4 cases of weak dust-storm and
17 dusty days in the spring of 2003. The highest PM10 value was 607 μgm−3 and PM 2.3 was 149 μgm−3, respectively. These observations identify the growing need for further universal observation practices and dust-storm reporting
in future.
Observations indicated that snow covered the central part of the Gobi Desert, near the boundary of China and Mongolia, from
December until mid-March. This is in contrast to other years when the Gobi was relatively wet, producing unfavourable conditions
for the formation of intense dust-storms. In addition, the very strong winds associated with intense cyclones and anticyclones
were not apparent and the systems shifted northward during the spring. As a result, the frequency and intensity of observed
dust-storms in 2003 in this region were very low. This confirms that there is variability in the frequency of dust-storm formation

When 4-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-phenyl)-2-butanone (vanillylacetone) was tested for manganese peroxidase (MnP)-catalyzed oxidation, it was found to be degraded with the cleavage of an aromatic ring. Among numerous products of vanillylacetone oxidation, four major ones were purified by thin-layer chromatography and identified using mass spectroscopy (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis. Three of them maintained the aromatic ring structure and were identified as 4-[6,2'-dihydroxy-5,3'-dimethoxy-5'-(3-oxo-butyl)-biphenyl]-butan-2-one, 4-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-3-buten-2-one, and 4-[6,2'-dihydroxy-5,3'-dimethoxy-5'-(3-oxo-butyl)-biphenyl]-3-buten-2-one. Even though the fourth product could not be purified to a single compound, data from infrared spectroscopy showed that it did not have a benzene ring. From MS and NMR analysis, 3-(3-oxo-butyl)-hexa-2,4-dienedioic acid-1-methyl ester was tentatively suggested as the dominant species. The reaction mechanism was suggested on the basis of the structural information of these products. Toxicity identification and reduction of wastewaters from a pigment manufacturing factory 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this study, major toxicants in pigment wastewaters (i.e. raw wastewater and effluent) were determined by toxicity identification evaluations (TIEs), and changes in their toxicities due to combined gamma-ray (gamma-ray) and ozone treatments were evaluated. From TIE results using Daphnia magna, Cr(VI) and o-toluidine were identified as major toxicants in the raw wastewater with concentrations of 2.47 and 25.3mg l(-1), respectively. This was confirmed by subsequent spiking and mass balance approaches. For effluent, TIE results suggested that organic anions were likely responsible for the observed toxicities. Toxicity reduction tests showed that gamma-rays with ozone treatment after coagulation was more efficient in reducing toxicities in the raw wastewater (3.9-2.0 TU) than gamma-ray treatment alone (3.9-3.1 TU). For pigment effluent, gamma-ray/O3 treatment resulted in a complete removal of the acute toxicity. 相似文献

In this study, we assessed airborne endotoxin levels in university laboratories, hospital diagnostic laboratories, and a biowaste site. We also investigated indoor and outdoor sampling, sampling site, type of ventilation system, presence of open biowaste boxes, weather, and detection of Gram-negative bacteria (GNB). A total of 69 air samples were collected from 11 facilities in three institutions. Average total airborne endotoxin levels ranged from <0.01 to 10.02 EU m−3, with an overall mean of 1.03 EU m−3. Endotoxin levels were high in window-ventilated facilities, in facilities in which GNB were detected; levels were also high when it was rainy (all ps < 0.05). Endotoxin levels were significantly correlated with humidity (r = 0.70, p < 0.01). The presence of HVAC; humidity; and the presence of open biowaste boxes affect endotoxin levels in laboratories. 相似文献

Comparative effectiveness of mixed organic substrates to mushroom compost for treatment of mine drainage in passive bioreactors 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Bioreactors are one possible best sustainable technology to address the mine-impacted water problems. Several prospective substrates (mushroom compost, cow manure, sawdust, wood chips, and cut rice straw) were characterized for their ability to serve as a source of food and energy for sulfate-reducing bacteria. Twenty bench-scale batch bioreactors were then designed and set up to investigate relative effectiveness of various mixtures of substrates to that of mushroom compost, the most commonly used substrate in field bioreactors, for treating mine drainage with acidic (pH 3) and moderate pH (pH 6). Overall, reactive mixtures showed satisfactory performances in generating alkalinity, reducing sulfate and removing metals (Al>Fe>Mn) (up to 100%) at both pH conditions, for all substrates. The mixture of sawdust and cow manure was found as the most effective whereas the mixture containing 40% cut rice straw gave limited efficiency, suggesting organic carbon released from this substrate is not readily available for biodegradation under anaerobic conditions. The mushroom compost-based bioreactors released significant amount of sulfate, which may raise a more concern upon the start-up of field-scale bioreactors. The correlation between the extent of sulfate reduction and dissolved organic carbon/SO(4)(2-) ratio was weak and this indicates that the type of dissolved organic carbon plays a more important role in sulfate reduction than the absolute concentration and that the ratio is not sensitive enough to properly describe the relative effectiveness of substrate mixtures. 相似文献

Heavy metal accumulation (Cu, Zn, Ni, and Pb) in common marine macroalga, Acrosorium uncinatum under nutrient (phosphate and nitrate) enriched (experiment 1) and starved (experiment 2) conditions over a short exposure period (12 h) were examined in this study. Control was maintained in seawater contained nutrient solution without addition of metals and in seawater alone for experiment 1 and 2, respectively. Among the four metals studied, the accumulation of Zn, Ni, and Pb was considerably lower than Cu. The accumulation factor for all metals varies greatly in different nutrient concentrations, but it increases as the exposure of metal concentration decreases in both the experiments. The results of the present findings established that this macroalga is an accumulator of metals Cu, Zn, Ni, and Pb and have the potential to accumulate these metals even in a short time exposure period (12 h). Even though metal accumulation by A. uncinatum largely depends on the available concentration in the medium, nutrients like phosphate and nitrate can affect the accumulation significantly. 相似文献

Measurements of real-time continuous PM2.5 black carbon (BC) concentrations were made using a single-wavelength Aethalometer (@880 nm) in three different environments, i.e., an indoor office, a residential indoor living room and an urban site, to evaluate the difference in temporal behaviors of BC particles and investigate the optical shadowing effect in the Aethalometer BC data. An empirical method was used for correcting the optical saturation effect on the original BC data obtained from the measurements at the three sites. Also, the elemental carbon (EC) concentrations from 24-h filter-based measurements of PM2.5 particles were determined using a thermal optical transmittance (TOT) method at the same urban site for comparison with the Aethalometer BC results. Transient events of BC were often observed for period of a few hours at all sites, reaching a maximum level of 27.3 μg m?3 at the urban site. The diurnal cycles of the BC concentrations observed at the two indoor environments were found to be considerably affected by the air exchange rate, occupants' behavior patterns and nearby traffic emissions. The time-series plots of the Aethalometer data showed obvious discontinuities at the filter spot change, and a rise in the apparent BC concentrations after filter tape advances. Also, the relationship between the attenuation and BC concentration was found to be non-linear at all sites. The empirical approach presented here demonstrated a definite improvement in the continuity of the BC data across the time gaps of each tape advance. The compensated BC concentration was 1.10–1.23 times greater than the raw BC data, depending on the observation sites, with the highest difference observed between the raw and compensated BC data at an indoor office near a small traffic road. The 24-h integrated EC concentration was approximately 12% higher than the original 24-h average BC concentration and 6% lower than the loading compensated BC concentration, showing that the loading compensation process accounted for the saturation effect of the filter tape. 相似文献
