A Systems Based Framework to Examine The Multi-contextural Application of the Sustainability Concept

A conceptual framework is generated through systems principles to explain sustainability’s wide diversity of interpretation and contextual application. Sustainability is reduced to a literal interpretation as the ability to sustain, and then expressed in simple systems as the ability of one system to sustain another system over time. This reinforces the importance of time in the sustainability debate, and suggests the concept can be legitimately applied to timeframes that have absolute limits. The framework is expanded to complex systems as the changing ability of one or many systems to sustain the changing requirements of one or many systems, over time. This accommodates multiple relations and system dynamics, and hints at the extraordinary complexity encompassed by the sustainability concept. Practical implications relate to the evolving meaning of sustainability, the need for continual change to remain sustainable, and that the sustainability concept can be validly applied to virtually any context or situation that exhibits a dimension of continuity. Derived criteria useful for clarifying contextual applications of sustainability include stating the how, what, why, who and for how long of sustainability, along with indicating the most appropriate hierarchical tier at which the concept is being applied.

我国城市化进程的快速发展、城乡二元管理体制和土地二元所有制结构导致了"城中村"的形成.为落实科学发展观,促进城市全面、协调发展,必须对"城中村"加强管理,完善基础设施,改善卫生条件,规范土地的使用.通过"城中村"的改造能提高城市土地利用率,改善居住环境、投资环境和生态环境,更好地建设资源节约型、环境友好型社会.     

我国绿色物流的发展现状和应对措施

所谓绿色物流,就是以降低对环境的污染、减少资源消耗为目标的物流活动。但是,绿色物流的理念才刚刚传入我国,对政府和企业而言都还是一个全新的话题,不少企业对其重要性还缺乏认识。对此,政府应该根据5R原则对企业进行规制与政策激励,加强企业的环境自律和消费者的绿色理念宣传,把绿色理念的传播贯穿全社会。

“生态”一词是目前使用频率较高的词汇之一,但也是很容易使用混淆的词汇之一。“生态”的含义已经由最初生态学中的基本概念和含义扩展了很多,并在许多行业和领域得到广泛应用。其合理应用使生态理念在各个相关领域得到发展,但在使用的过程中,也不乏对其内涵欠缺深入的理解和考究,使其外延过大,使用混乱,出现泛生态化的趋势。本文从生态学的角度分析了“生态”一词的内涵,并对目前广泛流行的一些用法进行讨论,以规范生态概念的使用。     

Use of the guild concept in environmental impact assessment

The purpose of this paper was to clarify and expand several ideas concerning use of the guild concept in environmental impact assessment Background material on the concept and examples of its use are given. It is argued that for purposes of environmental assessment a resource-based guild approach is preferable to a taxonomic-based approach. Validity of the guild concept, problems in classifying species into guilds, implications of guild membership, and usefulness of guild analyses are discussed. I conclude that only with a thorough knowledge of both its limitations and benefits will it be possible to fully use the guild concept for understanding organizational processes in communities and ecosystems and for assessing environmental impacts.
