Sediments from 12 sites in Boston Harbor were assayed for butyltins. The highest levels of tributyltin (TBT) were found at sites where commercial or pleasure boats were moored, where ocean going vessels dock, and at a former shipyard. Little or no TBT was detected at sites which do not have a history of significant boating activity. Dibutyltin and monobutyltin were also detected at most sites, indicating that degradation of TBT occurs at these sites. 相似文献

Spring barley (Hordeum vulgare cv. Klaxon) plants, 9 days old, were exposed to 0.05, 0.10 or 0.15 microl litre(-1) ozone (O3) for 12 days. Fumigation was administered for 7 h between 9.00 h and 16.00 h each day. Using conventional IRGA equipment, the carbon dioxide exchange rate (CER) was shown to decrease with increasing concentration of O3 during the exposure period, falling to 60% of the control value at the highest O3 concentration. Transpiration rates and stomatal conductance showed similar trends. Light saturation curves, obtained using a leaf disc oxygen electrode, demonstrated that O3-treated leaves had lower apparent quantum yields (QY) and generally lower rates of O2 evolution at saturating light and CO2 levels. Oscillations in chlorophyll a fluorescence, normally observed in control plants, could not be detected after O3 treatment and could only be restored to some extent by feeding the phosphate sequestering agent D-mannose to the leaves. 相似文献

Biotic and abiotic degradation of di--butylphthalate (DBP) in water and sediment/water systems from six different sites was investigated under laboratory conditions. DBP disappearance was rapid in all microbially active systems and substantially reduced under sterile conditions. Adaptation of microbial populations to degrade DBP was indicated in six of nine evaluations conducted. It is evident that the global concentrations of methylchloroform (CH3CCl3) are increasing although at much lower rates than in the past. The ratio of concentrations in the two hemispheres has varied and is now declining, which reflects the constancy of the industrial emissions over the past 5 years. Observations show that the mid-latitude concentrations in both hemispheres are slightly lower during the summer than at other times, probably reflecting the greater removal of CH3CCl3 by OH radicals during summer. Calculations show that the lifetime of CH3CCl3 is about 6 (±1.5) years, which is considerably shorter than many previous estimates. It implies that there are probably 8 × 105 molecules of OH/cm3 of air, although this estimate may be uncertain by ±75%. The shorter lifetime is partly due to a revision of the estimated absolute concentration of CH3CCl3 in the atmosphere, which was found to be about 20% less than estimated previously. The relatively short lifetime suggests that in the future CH3CCl3 will contribute <15% of the anthropogenic chlorine in the troposphere, which is an approximate measure of its relative contribution to the depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer. 相似文献

Four trihalomethanes were administered by gavage to Sprague-Dawley rats from day 6 to day 15 of gestation. Chloroform (Ch) was administered at levels of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg and bromoform (Br), bromodichloromethane (BDCM) and chlorodibromomethane (CDBM) were administered at levels of 50, 100 or 200 mg/kg/day. A separate control was used for each compound. Maternal weight gain was depressed in all groups receiving Ch and at the highest dose levels of BDCM and CDBM. Ch administration caused decreased maternal hemoglobin and hematocrit values at all dose levels and also produced increased serum inorganic phosphorus and cholesterol at the highest dose. Liver enlargement was observed at all dose levels of Ch but in no other treatment groups. Evidence of a fetotoxic response was observed with Ch, CDBM and Br but not BDCM. No dose-related histopathological changes were observed in either mothers or fetuses as a result of treatment. None of the chemicals tested produced any teratogenic effects. 相似文献

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF) were found in annually laminated sediments from Lakes Zurich, Baldegg, and Lugano in Switzerland. Octachlorodibenzo-p-diox in (OCDD) predominated, averaging approximately 1.3 ppb. The congener distribution indicated that combustion was the source of PCDD and PCDF in these sediments. In these dated sediment cores, we found that PCDD and PCDF were absent from the sediments before about 1945, but increased thereafter. 相似文献

Enactment of the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) of 1990 has resulted in increased ambient air monitoring needs for industry, some of which may be met efficiently using open-path optical remote sensing techniques. These techniques include Fourier transform spectroscopy, differential optical absorption spectroscopy, laser long-path absorption, differential absorption lidar, and gas cell correlation spectroscopy. With this regulatory impetus, it is an opportune time to consider applying these technologies to the remote and/or path-averaged measurement and monitoring of toxic gases covered by the CAAA. Water and sediment samples were collected from eight different locations along the River Nile and its branches. Residues of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH's), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), DDT's, cyclodienes and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) were analyzed by GLC. Data on Grand Total (GT) concentration values pointed out that Rosetta Branch was more polluted with all components than Demietta Branch. Kafr El-Ziate was the most polluted location showing 1355.8 ng/L for water and 7396.9 ng/g for sediments, while Delta Barrage was the least polluted site. The concentrations of gamma-HCH were higher than the other isomers (alpha- and beta-HCH) in all studied sites. The results showed that HCB was the smallest pollutant at all locations on comparison with other chlorinated hydrocarbons. El-Mansoura, Rosetta and Kafr El-Ziate sites contained the highest concentrations of DDT's in both water and sediment samples. P,P'-DDE was dominate in all locations of water samples, but P,P'-DDT was in sediment samples. Also, the results showed the prominent presence of cyclodienes when compared with the other OC's compounds in sediment samples, especially Aldrin. Kafr El-Ziate was the most polluted location by PCB's, particularly the Ar1242. However, there were increasing levels of chlorinated hydrocarbons in the sediment samples parallel to percentage extractable organic matter (% EOM). An ecological safety study of using vinclozolin in field and laboratory experiments showed that the effect of the preparation led to a decrease in the abundance of actinomycetes and mycelial fungi and an enhancement of nitrification. The residual amounts of vinclozolin in soil after 12 months were 6-12% of the dose introduced. The persistent chlorinated derivatives of the toxicant were found. Microbial strains pertaining to the genera Pseudomonas and Bacillus were isolated that utilized vinclozolin as the sole source of carbon and energy. 相似文献
