Certain hydrothermal vent invertebrates, e.g. Riftia pachyptila and Calyptogena magnifica, are clearly established as harboring dense populations of chemoautotrophic sulfur bacteria in specialized tissues. By contrast, the physiological characteristics of the abundant intracellular gill symbiont of the vent mussel Bathymodiolus thermophilus have been questioned. The low activities of enzymes diagnostic for CO2 fixation (Calvin cycle) and for sulfur-driven energy generation, as measured by other investigators, have been attributed to bacterial contamination of the gill surface. Based on research at the Galápagos Rift hydrothermal vents in 1988 and subsequent laboratory experiments, the current study confirms that the B. thermophilus symbiont is a psychrophile for which thiosulfate and sulfide stimulate CO2 fixation. It strongly indicates that the symbiont is a chemoautotroph by establishing the following: (1) Sulfide and thiosulfate can stimulate CO2 fixation by partially purified symbionts by up to 43-fold and 120-fold, respectively; (2) the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase activity of the symbiont is sufficient to account for its sulfide- or thiosulfate-stimulated CO2 incorporation; (3) the symbiont's molar growth yield on thiosulfate, as judged by CO2 incorporation, is indistinguishable from that of free-living chemoautotrophs. Due to the high protein-degrading activity of B. thermophilus gill lysate, it is also suggested that host lysis of symbionts plays a more important role in the nutrition of the vent mussel than in R. pachyptila or C. magnifica, for which no comparable protein-degrading activity was found.  相似文献

Summary Clutch size in the pipevine swallowtail of California (Battus philenor hirsuta) varies widely within and among two seasonal flights, early and late spring. Pilson and Rausher (1988) proposed that variation in clutch size in a Texan B. philenor population is due to assessment of host quality with subsequent adjustment of clutch size and to differences in motivational state. The assessment hypothesis and a nonexclusive alternative that clutch size is determined by mature egg load were tested for populations in Sacramento, California. Weak and sporadic correlations between host quality and clutch size were found, suggesting that host assessment with adjustment of clutch size is not a strong factor in this population. Clutch size was highly correlated to mature egg load in the early but not in the late spring flight. Yet, females from both flights had similar loads of mature eggs. It is proposed that females lay clutch sizes proportional to egg load, up to a maximum threshold. The threshold may be lowered in the late spring flight in response to changes in overall host quality or to increased egg predation, reducing both the mean clutch size and the correlation between clutch size and egg load. Potential mechanisms for the change in behavior among flights, based on changes in the threshold, are discussed.  相似文献

Summary A variety of orb-weaving spider species construct stabilimenta, patterned areas of dense silk, typically near the hub of the orb. The adaptive significance of this construction, along with associated behaviors such as shuttling and vibrating, is much debated. Arigiope argentata on small islands of the Bahamas frequently possess stabilimenta; we studied 397 individuals of this species to investigate possible functions of their stabilimenta, paying particular attention to predator-defense hypotheses. Cruciform stabilimenta were commoner in all size classes of spiders than discoid stabilimenta or no stabilimentum at all; discoid stabilimenta occurred mostly among intermediate size classes. Within the cruciform type, two-segmented stabilimenta were especially common among the very smallest spiders. Size of cruciform stabilimenta showed a curvilinear relation to spider body length; the fitted curve for total segment length had a maximum at an intermediate spider length. We argue that this relationship (among other phenomena) supports an apparently-larger-size hypothesis, whereby intermediate-sized spiders in particular appear much larger than they actually are. This could discourage predators, including those that are gape-limited such as lizards. We argue that stabilimenta in the smallest spiders, in which typically two segments are opposed, so that they more or less line up, serve as camouflage. When disturbed experimentally, spiders with discoid stabilimenta shuttle to the opposite side of the centrally located stabilimentum. This seems an obvious defensive behavior and occurs less frequently among spiders with cruciform stabilimenta. Large spiders vibrate more frequently than small ones, but no relation exists between vibration frequency and stabilimentum type. We argue (see also Tolbert 1975) that vibrating behavior, in which the spider can become a blur, renders its location more difficult to discern and the spider more difficult to grasp, rather than increasing apparent size. Both China’s national subsidy policies for plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) purchasers and passenger cars corporate average fuel consumption and new vehicle credit regulation (dual-credit policy) favor long-range 300+ km battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and 80+ km plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). However, these electric vehicles tend to have lower energy efficiency and higher purchase and operation costs. Vehicle with larger batteries can also be less equitable because the subsidies are often provided to more expensive vehicles and wealthier owners. This study takes advantage of a novel dataset of daily driving data from 39,854 conventional gasoline vehicles in Beijing and 4999 PHEVs in Shanghai to determine the optimal range of BEVs and PHEVs within their respective cities. We simulate a model to explore ranges with which PEVs emit less GHGs than that of a baseline hybrid and conventional gasoline vehicle while ensuring that all daily travel demands are met. Our findings indicate that in both cities, the optimal ranges to balance cost and travel demand for BEVs are 350 km or less and for PHEVs are 60 km or less in Beijing and 80 km or less in Shanghai. We also find that to minimize carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, the ranges are even lower 10 km in Beijing and 30 km in Shanghai. Our study suggests that instead of encouraging long-range PEVs, governments should subsidize PEV models with shorter ranges. Parallel efforts should also be made to both increase renewable energy over fossil fuels and expand charging facilities. Although individual mobility demand varies, the government could reduce occasional long-distance driving by subsidizing alternative transportation choices. Providing week-long driving trials to consumers before their purchases may help decrease the demand of very long range PEVs by alleviating the range anxiety through a learning process.

Diazinon contamination of California's rivers has resulted in placing several rivers on the federal Clean Water Act § 303d list of impaired waterways. Impaired water body listing requiresthe development of Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL). Previous studies identified stormwater related diazinon pulses in California rivers. This study was conducted to monitor diazinonconcentrations in the Sacramento River watershed after rainfallevents, to ascertain whether pulses could be identified and, ifconcentrations of concern were observed, to estimate loadings anddetermine geographic origins of the insecticide. TMDL developmentrequires knowledge of contaminant sources, loadings, and geographic origins. Flow and diazinon concentrations peaked in the Sacramento River at Sacramento after the three largest stormsduring January and February 1994. Diazinon concentrations peakedconsequent to each of three storms. Diazinon concentrationsmeasured in the Sacramento River at Sacramento exceeded theCalifornia Department of Fish and Game acute and chroniccriteria for protection of aquatic life during January andFebruary for nine and nineteen days, respectively. Multipleexceedances were observed throughout the watershed. Diazinon loading and geographic origin differed with each of the three storms. The design of this study provides a useful template for others attempting to identify loadings and sources of contaminants in surface waters and to rectify aquatic ecosystemcontamination from various land use practices.  相似文献

Within-clutch variability of DDE and PCB residues in eggs from 62 clutches of black-crowned night-herons (Nycticorax nycticorax) was small (12% and 17%) compared to among-clutch variability (88% and 83%). Significant correlations between concentrations of DDE (median r=0.8885) and of PCBs (median r=0.8244) occurred when 501 correlations were run on two randomly selected eggs from within the same clutch; no significant correlation occurred for either concentrations of DDE (median r=0.0353) or PCBs (median r=–0.0843) when eggs were not restricted to the same clutch but were restricted to the same colony. The probability of finding infrequently detected organochlorine contaminants (e.g., DDT, cis-chlordane) in eggs from the same clutch varied from 43–96% and increased as the chemical became more prevalent and the number of eggs per clutch became smaller. These results further support one of the basic assumptions of the sample egg technique, that the chemical residues in one egg in a clutch accurately reflect residues in the remaining eggs of the clutch.  相似文献
