Diets of demersal fishes were determined on the shelf (ca. 130 m deep) off Iwate, Japan. Samples were taken in three different types of habitat, an artificial reef (AR) site, a natural reef (NR) site, and sandymud bottom (SB) site, from May 1987 to September 1991, mostly every two months. A total of 67 prey items were recognized in the stomachs of 45 predator fish species. The most important preys were the pelagic fishes Sardinops melanostictus and Engraulis japonicus, which comprised 37% wet wt of the overall stomach contents. The percentage of pelagic fishes was highest at AR site, where fish density was highest. The dominant ten species could be divided into five feeding types. The pelagic fish feeders Physiculus maximowiczi and Gadus macrocephalus fed mainly on S. melanostictus. The dietary breadth of P. maximowiczi was wide, while that of Gadus macrocephalus was narrow. The pelagic crustacean feeder Theragra chalcogramma mostly consumed Themisto japonica and euphausiids and showed the least dietary overlap with other fishes. Benthic fish feeders were Hemitripterus villosus and Liparis tanakai. The benthic crustacean feeders Alcichthys alcicornis and Hexagrammos otakii consumed benthic crustaceans as well as pelagic and benthic fishes and showed the largest dietary breadth. The benthic invertebrate feeders Gymnocanthus intermedius, Dexistes rikuzenius and Tanakius kitaharai fed mainly on polychaetes and benthic crustaceans. But Gymnocanthus intermedius consumed a significant proportion of pelagic fishes. Ontogenetic dietary shift was recognized for these fishes. Pelagic fishes were consumed more intensively by larger individuals, especially true of A. alcicornis, Theragra chalcogramma and Gadus macrocephalus. Predominancy of the two most adundant species, P. maximowiczi and A. alcicornis, may be supported by their wide dietary breadth and the significant proportion of pelagic fish in their diets. Interspecific dietary overlap was low in most cases suggesting that food resources were well partitioned, although some high overlap was observed among the pelagic fish feeders, A. alcicornis, and Gymnocanthus intermedius, and among the benthic invertebrate feeders. Interspecific competition seemed more likely in the benthic invertebrate feeders than in the pelagic fish feeders partly because of superabundance of the pelagic prey S. melanostictus. 相似文献

A commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit was evaluated for the determination of toxic equivalents (TEQs) of dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in retail fish. The ELISA was highly specific for 2,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB 118), which is generally the most abundant dioxin-like PCB isomer found in fish. The quantitative limit of the ELISA (using 3,3',4'-trichloro-4-methoxybiphenyl as a surrogate standard for PCB 118) was 10 ng ml(-1) (125 pg assay(-1)) in the standard curve, corresponding to 50 pg PCB 118 g(-1) in the tested sample. Good recoveries of PCB 118 (78.7-112.3%) were obtained for spiked purified fish extracts according to the ELISA. Good linearity was also obtained in dilution tests using purified fish extracts. No significant interference of the matrix was observed in the ELISA when this purification procedure was used. Recovery tests in which PCB 118 was added to fish samples also resulted in acceptable recoveries (60.2-82.3%) in the ELISA following purification. The ELISA results for fish samples correlated well with the TEQ concentrations of dioxin-like PCBs obtained by high-resolution gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry (r = 0.92, n = 26). These data indicate that the ELISA kit is suitable for screening retail fish for the TEQs of dioxin-like PCBs. 相似文献

We used Lagrangian numerical simulations to examine the trans-Pacific dispersal processes of loggerhead turtle hatchlings.
Ten thousand simulated particles were released from each of the three nesting regions in Japan and tracked for 5 years. Results
showed many particles moving eastward, drifting in the Kuroshio Current followed by the Kuroshio Extension Current. However,
no particles reached Baja California, a known feeding area, through passive processes, indicating that trans-Pacific transportation
requires active swimming by turtles. The duration of the trans-Pacific dispersal was estimated to be at least 1.6–3.4 years,
with some turtles drifting in the Kuroshio Countercurrent and remaining in the western Pacific even after 5 years. This indicates
that as revealed by previous genetic studies, not all loggerheads always disperse along a trans-Pacific route. The findings
showed that survival and expected growth rates varied widely according to ambient temperatures during drifting, which in turn

This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to review the optimal timing of delivery at term for neonates with prenatally diagnosed congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). We reviewed the literature up to December 19, 2022 using MEDLINE and the Cochrane Library databases. The inclusion criteria were original articles, comparative studies of CDH neonates delivered at an early term (37–38 weeks of gestation) and at full term (39 weeks of gestation or later), and comparative studies investigating outcomes of CDH neonates. Six studies met the inclusion criteria, including 985 neonates delivered at an early term and 629 delivered at full term. The cumulative rate of survival to discharge showed no significant difference between CDH neonates delivered at an early term (395/515; 76.7%) or at full term (345/467; 73.9%) (risk ratio [RR] 1.01; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.89–1.16; p = 0.85). Furthermore, the number of neonates requiring oxygen therapy at discharge was not significantly different between CDH neonates delivered at an early term (32/370; 8.6%) and at full term (14/154; 9.1%) (RR, 0.99; 95% CI, 0.36–2.70; p = 0.99). Individual variation is a ubiquitous and important factor that affects ecological dynamics. This study examined individual
variation in the nest-use pattern of the jumping spider Phidippus audax. Although the jumping spider is a diurnal species, field observations in this study revealed that the majority of individuals
remained in their nests during the day. An accompanying examination of the hunger level of the spiders revealed that spiders
that remained in nests were more starved than those observed outside nests. If spiders actively forage when they are starved,
as has been suggested by previous studies, one would expect to see the opposite trend (i.e., spiders that remained in nests
are more satiated). Thus, the pattern observed in the field contradicts the known behavioral pattern of the spiders. An individual-based
model was used to investigate the behavioral mechanism of the spider and the discrepancy found in the observations. A basic
assumption of the model is that spiders possess distinct inactive and active phases (biphasic activity pattern), and transitions
between the two phases are regulated by the hunger level of the spider. Data from a laboratory experiment were used to examine
the assumptions of the model partially. The model was able to capture patterns observed in the data, suggesting that the pattern
of transitions in biphasic activity is an important trait of the foraging behavior of the jumping spider. 相似文献

In order to develop effective conservation strategies for endangered migratory species, the link between feeding and breeding grounds needs to be clarified. In this study, the genetic compositions of consecutive Japanese feeding aggregations of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) along the Kuroshio Current were examined by mixed-stock analyses of mitochondrial DNA control-region sequences. The results indicated that the southern feeding aggregation around Yaeyama (24.3°N, 124.0°E) was sourced from various Pacific rookeries in the Yaeyama, Ogasawara, Western Pacific, and Indian Oceans and Southeast Asia. Among northern feeding aggregations, the Ginoza (26.5°N, 128.0°E) aggregation was also sourced from the Western Pacific Ocean, but the Nomaike (31.4°N, 130.1°E), Muroto (33.2°N, 134.2°E), and Kanto (35.6°N, 140.5°E) aggregations were contributed mostly by the closer Ogasawara rookeries. The reduced contribution from tropical Pacific rookeries to northern feeding aggregations and the significant correlation between genetic differentiation and geographical distance matrices of feeding aggregations indicated that most hatchlings from these regions transported by the Kuroshio Current settle in upstream feeding grounds along the Japanese archipelago, implying that current flow influences the composition of feeding aggregations. Differences in the composition of relatively close neritic feeding aggregations have important conservation implications, for which both regional and multinational conservation strategies are needed. 相似文献

Commonly used functional response models (Holling’s type I and type II models) assume that the encounter rate of a predator increases linearly with prey density, provided that the predator is searching for prey. In other other words, aN (a is the baseline encounter rate and N is prey density) describes the encounter rate. This study examined whether the models are adequate when predators and prey interact locally by using a spatially explicit individual based model because local interactions affect the spatial distribution of predators and prey, which also affects the encounter rate. Predators were assumed to possess a spatial perception range that influenced their foraging behavior (e.g., if a prey is in the perception range, the predator moves towards the prey). The effect of antipredator behavior by prey was also examined. The results suggest that prey and predator densities as well as handling time affect the baseline rate (i.e., parameter a) as opposed to the common assumption that the parameter is constant. The nature of model deviations depended on both the antipredator behavior and the predators’ perception range. Understanding these deviations is important as they qualitatively affect community dynamics. 相似文献
