The controlled pyrolysis of polyethylene/polypropylene/polystyrene mixed with brominated high-impact polystyrene containing decabromodiphenyl ether as a brominated flame-retardant with antimony trioxide as a synergist was performed. The effect of decabromodiphenyl ether and antimony trioxide on the formation of its congeners and their effect on distribution of pyrolysis products were investigated. The controlled pyrolysis significantly affected the decomposition behavior and the formation of products. Analysis with gas chromatograph with electron capture detector confirmed that the bromine content was rich in step 1 (oil 1) liquid products leaving less bromine content in the step 2 (oil 2) liquid products. In the presence of antimony containing samples, the major portion of bromine was observed in the form of antimony bromide and no flame-retardant species were found in oil 1. In the presence of synergist, the step 1 and step 2 oils contain both light and heavy compounds. In the absence of synergist, the heavy compounds in step 1 oil and light compounds in step 2 oils were observed. The presence of antimony bromide was confirmed in the step 1 oils but not in step 2 oils.  相似文献

Toothed-whales and dolphins have been hunted for human consumption in Japan, and their muscles (red meats) are highly contaminated with mercury (Hg). We investigated the distribution and toxicity of Hg in rats after oral administration of Hg-contaminated whale red meat marketed for human consumption in Japan. Rats were orally administered the red meat homogenate for seven consecutive days (0.5 g red meat/kg-bw/day). The red meat administered to rats contained 81microg/g of total mercury (T-Hg) and 13.4 microg/g of methyl mercury (M-Hg). This dose corresponds to the human consumption of 210 g red meat/60 kg-bw/week, exceeding by about 29 times the provisional tolerable weekly intake of M-Hg at 1.6 microg/kg-bw/week set by JECFA [JECFA, 2003. Joint FAO/WHO expert committee on food additives. 61st meeting, Rome]. Twenty-four hours after the last administration, the distribution of T-Hg in rat organs and biochemical parameters in serum were analyzed. The administration of red meat significantly elevated T-Hg concentrations in the liver, kidney, erythrocytes, cerebral cortex and medulla oblongata from the control levels but did not elevate the T-Hg concentration in serum, showing the typical distribution pattern of M-Hg, not of inorganic Hg. The administration slightly but significantly increased GTP activity and P concentration and decreased BUN concentration in serum, although no abnormalities were observed in rat body weight gain and movement during the 7 days. The occasional consumption of red meat from small cetaceans, therefore, could pose a health problem for not only pregnant women but also for the general population.  相似文献

Water extracts of a green alga (Ulva sp.) are known to elicit phagostimulatory responses against a seahare Aplysia sp. In 1984 we happened, however, to find that a seahare shows its feeding preference for filter paper on which an ether extract of Ulva sp. had been absorbed. Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) copolymers without and with a polybrominated epoxy type flame retardant were thermally degraded at 450 degrees C alone (10 g) and mixed with polyvinylchloride (PVC) (8 g/2 g). Gaseous and liquid products of degradation were analysed by various gas chromatographic methods (GC with TCD, FID, AED, MSD) in order to determine the individual and cumulative effect of bromine and chlorine on the quality and quantity of degradation compounds. It was found that nitrogen, chlorine, bromine and oxygen are present as organic compounds in liquid products, their quantity depends on the pyrolysed polymer or polymer mixture. Bromophenol and dibromophenols were the main brominated compounds that come from the flame retardant. 1-Chloroethylbenzene was the main chlorine compound observed in liquid products. It was also determined that interactions appear at high temperatures during decomposition between the flame retardant, PVC and the ABS copolymer.  相似文献

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in the Southeastern Atlantic Ocean (International Whaling Commission ‘Breeding Stock B’—BSB) are distributed from the Gulf of Guinea to Western South Africa. Genetic data suggest that this stock may be sub-structured, but it remains unknown if this is due to reproductive segregation. This paper evaluates the spatial and temporal population structure of BSB humpback whales using a combination of maternally and bi-parentally inherited markers. The genetic differentiation that we identify in this study could be due to a combination of (1) spatial and/or temporal segregation on breeding grounds in the greater Gulf of Guinea, (2) the possibility of maternally inherited site fidelity to specific feeding grounds and (3) the use of two generalized but exclusive migratory routes (coastal and offshore) between feeding and breeding areas. Further, photo-identification and genetic sampling efforts in other areas of the Sub-Saharan Western Africa winter range and targeted deployment of satellite tags would help to clarify some of the apparent complexity in the population structure of animals biopsied in this region.  相似文献

The first International Symposium on Feedstock Recycling of Polymeric Materials (ISFR) was hosted in 1999 in Sendai, Japan. Since then, the ISFR has been held five times in different places in Asia and Europe. Each of these conferences focused on special issues covered by the Journal of Material Cycles and Waste Management. The topics included thermal processes with and without catalysts, wet processes in various solvents, the dehydrochlorination of PVC, mechanical recycling and separation techniques, as well as the treatment of biomaterials. This review is a compilation of the most interesting and important developments discussed at the ISFR during the last decade.  相似文献

In this study, we measured the wet deposition fluxes of ten trace elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, V and Zn) from December 2002 to March 2006 at three sites along the Japan Sea coast, which have been strongly affected by the long-range transport of air pollutants from the Asian continent. Also, factors, contributing to their seasonal variations were investigated. At the northern and central sites, the monthly wet deposition fluxes of all or most trace elements greatly increased during the cold season (typically, November–April), along with their monthly average (volume-weighted) concentrations in the precipitation. The cold/warm season ratios for the average concentrations of trace elements in precipitation were within the range of 2.7–5.1 at the northern site and 1.8–5.9 at the central site, which were similar to the average scavenging ratios (= concentration in precipitation/concentration in air) at each site. However, there were small differences (0.47–1.2 at the northern site and 0.73–1.7 at the central site) in the ratios of average concentrations in air between the two seasons. These suggest that the increase in the wet deposition fluxes of trace elements during the cold season is due to increases in their scavenging ratios. On the other hand, the result for the southern site was different from those at the other sites. The number of days when the daily maximum wind speed exceeded 10 m s?1 at the meteorological observatories near the study sites increased markedly during the cold season at the northern and central sites, showing that strong winds usually blow during the cold season at those sites, but not at the southern site. Higher wind speed transports larger amounts of constituents into the cloud system, which can result in their increased concentrations in precipitation. Thus, high scavenging ratios of trace elements during the cold season may be caused by the increase in their amounts of discharge into the cloud system owing to high wind speed, suggesting that wind speed is an important factor in the seasonal variations in the wet deposition fluxes.  相似文献

The octanol/water partition coefficients (P ow) of six monoisocyanate and five diisocyanate compounds were determined by high performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) methods. Two HPLC peaks, a broad tailed peak followed by a sharp one, were observed with all compounds. The later peak was identified as the isocyanate compound. The P ow value for each isocyanate compound was determined by fitting the capacity factor of the peak to the regression equation drawn from those of reference compounds. The hydrophobic substituent constants for the isocyanate group were calculated with each of the compounds. The value of this constant was strongly dependent on the type of carbon bound to the isocyanate group and the average values for the aromatic and aliphatic isocyanate groups were 0.35 and — 0.52, respectively. Because of the reactivity of those compounds in the aquatic environment, the P ow has little relevance to calculation of their environmental fate and ecotoxicity.  相似文献

To add data on trace metal contamination of Humboldt penguins in the South Pacific, levels of trace metals (As, Hg, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Cd) and porphyrins (copro-, uro-, and proto-) in excreta of Humboldt penguins that inhabit some important nesting sites on the northern coast of Chile were determined. Fresh excreta were collected on Pan de Azúcar Island, Chañaral Island, and Cachagua Island, from December 2011 to January 2012. Concentration of metals was determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry, whereas porphyrins levels were measured by fluorimetric analysis. Concentrations (dry weight) of Cu (199.67 μg g?1), As (7.85 μg g?1), and Pb (12.78 μg g?1) were higher (p?≤?0.05) in Cachagua Island. Colonies from Pan de Azúcar Island showed the highest levels of Hg (0.76 μg g?1), Cd (47.70 μg g?1), and Zn (487.10 μg g?1). Samples from Cachagua Island showed the highest (p?≤?0.05) levels of copro- (2.16 nmol g?1), uro- (2.20 nmol g?1), and protoporphyrins (2.23 nmol g?1). There was a positive correlation between the metals As, Pb, and Cu with uro-, copro-, and protoporphyrins. The results indicated that penguin colonies from Cachagua Island are more exposed to metal contamination than penguin colonies from Pan de Azúcar and Chañaral Islands, thus being more likely to develop certain diseases caused by contamination with metals. Considering biomagnification, the metals detected in the excreta of Humboldt penguins can be a source of contamination from marine environments to terrestrial ecosystems, which could also affect other living organisms.  相似文献

A commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit was evaluated for the determination of toxic equivalents (TEQs) of dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in retail fish. The ELISA was highly specific for 2,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB 118), which is generally the most abundant dioxin-like PCB isomer found in fish. The quantitative limit of the ELISA (using 3,3',4'-trichloro-4-methoxybiphenyl as a surrogate standard for PCB 118) was 10 ng ml(-1) (125 pg assay(-1)) in the standard curve, corresponding to 50 pg PCB 118 g(-1) in the tested sample. Good recoveries of PCB 118 (78.7-112.3%) were obtained for spiked purified fish extracts according to the ELISA. Good linearity was also obtained in dilution tests using purified fish extracts. No significant interference of the matrix was observed in the ELISA when this purification procedure was used. Recovery tests in which PCB 118 was added to fish samples also resulted in acceptable recoveries (60.2-82.3%) in the ELISA following purification. The ELISA results for fish samples correlated well with the TEQ concentrations of dioxin-like PCBs obtained by high-resolution gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry (r = 0.92, n = 26). These data indicate that the ELISA kit is suitable for screening retail fish for the TEQs of dioxin-like PCBs.  相似文献
