An important potential source of formaldehyde in the home is ureaformaldehyde foam insulation (UFFI). This study measures the long-term release of formaldehyde through the interior wall of test panels foamed with commercial urea-formaldehyde insulation. The measurements, made approximately 16 mo after initial foaming, were conducted under both static and dynamic air conditions with air flow selected to simulate a typical air exchange found in houses. Estimated room concentrations based on a simple model of uniform mixing within a room and measured emission rates are presented. Measurements of formaldehyde in the air from within the UFFI cavities are also reported.  相似文献

A comprehensive review of online, official, and scientific literature was carried out in 2012–13 to develop a framework of disaster social media. This framework can be used to facilitate the creation of disaster social media tools, the formulation of disaster social media implementation processes, and the scientific study of disaster social media effects. Disaster social media users in the framework include communities, government, individuals, organisations, and media outlets. Fifteen distinct disaster social media uses were identified, ranging from preparing and receiving disaster preparedness information and warnings and signalling and detecting disasters prior to an event to (re)connecting community members following a disaster. The framework illustrates that a variety of entities may utilise and produce disaster social media content. Consequently, disaster social media use can be conceptualised as occurring at a number of levels, even within the same disaster. Suggestions are provided on how the proposed framework can inform future disaster social media development and research.  相似文献

Willow on Yellowstone's northern range: evidence for a trophic cascade?   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Reintroduction of wolves (Canis lupus) to Yellowstone National Park in 1995-1996 has been argued to promote a trophic cascade by altering elk (Cervus elaphus) density, habitat-selection patterns, and behavior that, in turn, could lead to changes within the plant communities used by elk. We sampled two species of willow (Salix boothii and S. geyeriana) on the northern winter range to determine whether (1) there was quantitative evidence of increased willow growth following wolf reintroduction, (2) browsing by elk affected willow growth, and (3) any increase in growth observed was greater than that expected by climatic and hydrological factors alone, thereby indicating a trophic cascade caused by wolves. Using stem sectioning techniques to quantify historical growth patterns we found an approximately twofold increase in stem growth-ring area following wolf reintroduction for both species of willow. This increase could not be explained by climate and hydrological factors alone; the presence of wolves on the landscape was a significant predictor of stem growth above and beyond these abiotic factors. Growth-ring area was positively correlated with the previous year's ring area and negatively correlated with the percentage of twigs browsed from the stem during the winter preceding growth, indicating that elk browse impeded stem growth. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis of a behaviorally mediated trophic cascade on Yellowstone's northern winter range following wolf reintroduction. We suggest that the community-altering effects of wolf restoration are an endorsement of ecological-process management in Yellowstone National Park.  相似文献

An environmental parameters study has examined the impact of indoor temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH) levels on formaldehyde (CH2O) concentrations inside two unoccupied research houses where the primary CH2O emitter is particleboard underlayment. The data were fit to a simple three-term, steady state model describing the T and RH dependence of CH2O concentration in a single compartment with a single CH2O emitter. The model incorporates an Arrhenius T dependence and a nonlinear RH dependence of the CH2O vapor concentration within the solid CH2O emitter. The RH dependence is based on Freundlich's theory of the adsorption of water vapor on solid surfaces. The model is used to estimate potential seasonal variation in CH2O concentrations under specified experimental conditions inside the research houses. The modeled results indicate six- to ninefold variation between 18°C, 20% RH and 32°C, 80% RH, simulating potential winter/summer conditions with minimal indoor climate control. In comparison, Indoor conditions ranging from 20°C, 30% RH to 26°C, 60% RH yielded approximate two- to fourfold fluctuations in CH2O concentration.

The research house data were also used to evaluate the limitations and applicability of more complex five-term models developed from small-scale chamber studies of the environmental dependence of CH2O emissions from particleboard underlayment. These models also incorporate a linear T and RH dependence of the CH2O transport rate through the CH2O emitter in addition to the T and RH dependence of the CH2O concentration within the emitter. Good correlation is observed between the results of the research house studies and 1) a selected (i.e., single) underlayment model over a broad range of environmental conditions and 2) a combined underlayment model over a restricted range of environmental conditions.  相似文献

Varioys analytical methodologies for the monitoring of formaldehyde (CH2O) concentrations in domestic environments have been developed and evaluated. A modified CEA Instruments, Inc., analyzer has near-real-time CH3O-specific analysis capability with an 0.01 mg/m3 detection limit. A solid sorbent, 13X molecular sieve has been utilized in a pumped collection unit with a demonstrated 0.03–12.5 mg/m3 linear dynamic range using sampling periods of ≤ 15 min. The development of screening-type techniques has included (1) a semipermeable-membrane passive sampler for measurements of average CH2O concentrations over 8–24-h periods, and (2) a visual colorimetric analysis method for semiquantitative CH2O determinations using solid chemical reagents. A preliminary field evaluation has been completed. The results show excellent agreement between the new CH2O monitoring methods and a reference sampling and analysis technique. A generation apparatus for the production of CH2O vapor is also reported with a demonstrated linear dynamic range between 0.003 and 12.5 mg/m3.  相似文献

An odor of unknown origin described as a “tar” or “asphalt” smell has become unbearable for many of Globeville, CO, residents over the past few years. Residents report during odor events burning eyes and throat, headaches, skin irritation, and problems sleeping. This study was undertaken to identify the potential sources of the odor and the concentrations of air pollutants making up the odor by conducting meteorological correlations and sampling for a panel of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), sulfur gases, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the neighborhood and near suspected sources. Wind speed and direction data collected every 1 min in the neighborhood indicate that when the odor is noticed, the community is directly downwind of a wood preservation facility and an asphalt roofing facility. Air samples collected during high-intensity odor events have shown concentrations of methylene chloride, hexane, toluene, naphthalene, dibenz[a,h]anthracene, benzo[g,h,i]perylene, and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene, each at least two times higher than background concentrations. Naphthalene and the other PAHs are known pollutants emitted from wood treatment processes, and are known to have a coal tar odor. Naphthalene was present in a sample collected directly adjacent to the Koppers facility and was not present in any background samples. Single-compound odor and health thresholds, however, were never surpassed. Given the technical and regulatory challenges of sampling odors and controlling emissions, it is recommended that Globeville residents and neighboring industry pursue a “good neighbor policy” to solve the odor issue. Specific offending industrial processes could be identified for which there exist cost-effective control technologies that would reduce exposure to odors and air toxics in Globeville.

Implications: Meteorological correlations and samples of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), sulfur gases, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Globeville, CO, neighborhood and near suspected sources during odor events indicate potential industrial sources of a transient and noxious odor. Legislative approaches have proven unfruitful and no health or odor thresholds were typically violated. New approaches are warranted to address odor mixture effects in neighborhoods near industrial facilities.  相似文献

Calcium looping (CaL) is a promising post-combustion CO2 capture technology which is carried out in a dual fluidized bed (DFB) system with continuous looping of CaO, the CO2 carrier, between two beds. The system consists of a carbonator, where flue gas CO2 is adsorbed by CaO and a regenerator, where captured CO2 is released. The CO2-rich regenerator flue gas can be sequestered after gas processing and compression. A parametric study was conducted on the 10 kWth DFB facility at the University of Stuttgart, which consists of a bubbling fluidized bed carbonator and a riser regenerator. The effect of the following parameters on CO2 capture efficiency was investigated: carbonator space time, carbonator temperature and calcium looping ratio. The active space time in the carbonator, which is a function of the space time and the calcium looping ratio, was found to strongly correlate with the CO2 capture efficiency. BET and BJH techniques provided surface area and pore volume distribution data, respectively, for collected sorbent samples. The rate of sorbent attrition was found to be 2 wt.%/h which is below the expected sorbent make-up rate required to maintain sufficient sorbent activity. Steady-state CO2 capture efficiencies greater than 90% were achieved for different combinations of operational parameters. Moreover, the experimental results obtained were briefly compared with results derived from reactor modeling studies. Finally, the implications of the experimental results with respect to commercialization of the CaL process have been assessed.  相似文献

Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) with pure carbon dioxide was performed at increasingly strong conditions to investigate differential binding of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in two impacted soils, in their sieved size fractions, and in small (a few mg) samples of industry-related waste products separated from impacted soil. The binding strengths of PCDD/Fs were shown to be different in the two soils, and in their different soil particle size fractions. As might be expected based on surface area considerations, one soil showed the strongest binding in the smallest (<5 μm) sieved fraction. However, the other soil showed the strongest binding in the larger sized fractions, possibly indicating that process-related particles could be controlling PCDD/F binding. Selective SFE of various types of particles including black carbon and charcoal (separated from soil), and from a suspected process anode residue did show different PCDD/F binding behavior ranging from quite weak binding (charcoal) to very strong binding (anode particles). Shifts to the stronger SFE fractions in the soils after activated carbon treatment agreed well with the decreases previously found in the uptake of PCDD/Fs by earthworms, as well as decreases in their freely-dissolved aqueous concentrations in soil/water slurries. These results show that, as previously demonstrated for PAHs and PCBs, selective SFE can be a useful tool to investigate differences in PCDD/F binding behaviors in impacted soils and sediments and their component parts, as well as a rapid tool for estimating the effectiveness of activated carbon treatments on decreasing the bioavailability of PCDD/Fs in soils and sediments.  相似文献
