The uncontrolled burning of household waste in barrels has recently been implicated as a major source of airborne emissions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). A detailed, systematic study to understand the variables affecting emissions of PCDD/Fs from burn barrels was performed. The waste composition, fullness of the barrel, and the combustion conditions within the barrel all contribute significantly to determining the emissions of PCDD/Fs from burn barrels. The study found no statistically significant effect on emissions from the Cl content of waste except at high levels, which are not representative of typical household waste. At these elevated Cl concentrations, the impact of Cl on PCDD/F emissions was found to be independent of the form of the Cl (inorganic or organic). For typical burn conditions, most of the PCDD/F emissions appear to be associated with the later stages of the burn when the waste is smoldering. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were also measured for a subset of the tests. For the nominal waste composition, the average emissions were 76.8 ng toxic equivalency units (TEQ)WHO98/kg of waste combusted, which suggests that uncontrolled burning of household waste could be a major source of airborne PCDD/Fs in the United States.  相似文献

Previous experimental studies of participation have typically examined its motivational (especially commitment) benefits. These studies showed that these benefits are neither large nor consistent. The present study focused on the cognitive benefits of participation in decision making (pdm) and on the role of a different motivational mediator, self-efficacy. Unlike previous research which claimed to study the cognitive (informational) effects of participation, the present experiment: (a) allowed the information concerning task strategies to emerge from group discussion rather than being manipulated by the experimenter; (b) measured the actual strategies that were developed and used by subjects in the pdm condition; and (c) measured self-efficacy which was associated with the discovery and use of these strategies. It was found that the strategies developed by the subjects and their self-efficacy completely mediated the effect of participation on performance. Further, participation in setting goals, consistent with previous studies, did not affect performance but did affect self-efficacy.  相似文献

Sperm and eggs of sand dollars, Melitta quinquiesperforata (Leske), were subjected to two petroleum oils, and effects determined. The oils chosen were Kuwait crude and No. 2 fuel oil, supplied by the American Petroleum Institute. Water-soluble extracts (WSF) from oil-sea water mixes were prepared and the major aromatic components in the WSF of the fuel oil were identified. WSF of No. 2 fuel oil depressed respiration, mobility of sperm, interfered with fertilization and cleavage, and retarded larval development. The effects were detectable at dilutions of 4% and less (about 0.6 ppm of WSF). Kuwait crude was much less toxic. There was no effect on water permeability of the egg membrane. Results are compared with similar studies on other marine organisms.  相似文献

Eucalypts are among the highest emitters of biogenic volatile organic compounds, yet there is relatively little data available from field studies of this genus. Emissions of isoprene, monoterpenes and the short-chained carbonyls formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acetone were determined from four species (Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus grandis, and Eucalytpus viminalis) in Australia. A smaller comparative study was conducted on E. camaldulensis in south-eastern Australia. Carbonyl emissions, reported here for the first time from eucalypts, were generally comparable with rates reported for other species, with diurnal emissions peaking at about 4, 75 and 34 nmol m?2 min?1 for acetone, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde respectively. There was wide variation in diurnal isoprene and monoterpene emissions between species, but under standard conditions, isoprene emissions were much lower than previous reports. Conversely, standard emission rates of monoterpenes were as much as six times greater than previous reports for some species. Emission of each carbonyl was correlated with its ambient concentration across different species, but more weakly related to temperature. Acetaldehyde emission in particular was significantly correlated with transpiration, but not with sap flow or with ethanol concentrations in xylem sap, suggesting fermentation within the leaf and stomatal conductance are primary controlling processes. Differences in acetaldehyde exchange velocities between sites, in addition to transpiration differences, suggest stomata may indeed exert long term emission regulation, in contrast to compounds for which no biological sink exists.  相似文献

Approximately 50% of the compounds in the water solubles from 4 fuel oils have been identified via gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. In addition to the well-described types of compounds (naphthalenes, benzenes) expected in water-soluble extracts we have found phenols, anilines, and indoles. Of these classes of compounds methyl, dimethyl, and trimethyl derivatives are present in relatively high concentrations. The water solubles from the 4 fuel oils showed considerably different inhibitory effects to growth of 6 microalgae, 2 blue-greens, 2 greens, and 2 diatoms. Two of the fuel-oil extracts, Baytown and Montana, were lethal to blue-green algae. This was in part traceable to their content of p-toluidine which was found to be toxic to Agmenellum quadruplicatum, Strain PR-6, 1 g in the algal lawn-pad assay and 100 g/l in liquid culture. The water-soluble fraction from New Jersey fuel oil was lethal to the 2 green algae, with lesser effects on the 2 blue-greens. The 2 estuarine diatoms used as test organisms were not greatly inhibited by Baytown, Montana, or New Jersey fuel-oil water-soluble extracts. However, earlier work with an American Petroleum Institute fuel oil and the diatom Thallassiosira pseudonana (3H) showed that 3H was a very sensitive organism. Water solubles from the Baton Rouge fuel oil were almost without effect on the growth of all 6 microalgae. On the basis of the work herein and earlier work, a very cautious viewpoint is advisable in generalizing on the toxicity or lack thereof of a given fuel oil on the growth of different kinds of microalgae. On the other hand, with water solubles from toxic fuel oils such as Baytown or New Jersey the data clearly suggest that their potential for environmental damage is high, either through selective or enrichment effects on natural populations or through a lowering of total primary production.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: The fate and effect of sodium chloride applied to Californian highways in the Lake Tahoe, Truckee River, and Yuba River watersheds were studied over a period of 14 months in 1974–75. Chloride levels in streams below major freeways were found to be elevated during the winter. The high chloride levels occurred after the application of salt to roads, decreasing as the time from application increases. Small lakes receiving runoff from major highways were also enriched with chloride. Several of these lakes displayed a temporary chemocline, which was sufficiently strong to stabilize a temperature inversion in one lake.  相似文献

Corallimorpharians may dominate some habitats on coral reefs and compete with stony corals for access to light, yet little is known concerning their photosynthetic traits. At Eilat in the northern Red Sea, we observed that the abundance of individuals of the corallimorpharian Rhodactis rhodostoma decreased significantly with depth on the reef slope. Field and laboratory experiments revealed that they employ several mechanisms of photoadaptation to high irradiance on the shallow reef flat. Their endosymbiotic microalgae (zooxanthellae) varied significantly in both abundance and chlorophyll content with level of irradiance. Use of a diving pulse amplitude modulated fluorometer revealed that the zooxanthellae of R. rhodostoma effectively disperse excess light energy by expressing significantly higher values of non-photochemical quenching and maximum excitation pressure on photosystem II when experimentally exposed to high light (HL) versus low light (LL). Host corallimorpharian tissues mediated this response by shielding the algal symbionts from high irradiance. The endoderm of host tentacles thickened significantly and microalgal cells were located further from the mesoglea in HL than in LL. The clades of zooxanthellae hosted by the corallimorpharians also varied with depth. In shallow water, all sampled individuals hosted clade C zooxanthellae, while in deep water the majority hosted clade D. The photosynthetic output of individuals of R. rhodostoma was less affected by HL than was that of a stony coral examined. When exposed to both high temperature (HT) and HL, individuals of R. rhodostoma reduced their maximum quantum yield, but not when exposed to HL at low temperature (LT). In contrast, colonies of the scleractinian coral Favia favus reduced their photosynthetic output when exposed to HL in both temperature regimes. After 2 weeks of HT stress, R. rhodostoma polyps appeared to bleach completely but re-established their zooxanthella populations upon return to ambient temperature. We conclude that mechanisms of photoadaptation to high irradiance employed by both the endosymbiotic zooxanthellae and host corallimorpharians may explain in part the abundance of R. rhodostoma on some shallow reef flats. The ability to survive for weeks at HT while bleached also may allow corallimorpharians to repopulate shallow reef areas where scleractinians have been killed by thermal stress. B. Kuguru and G. Polyphenols in plants can protect proteins from degradation and improve the efficiency of conversion of plant protein to animal protein (meat and milk), but can this be achieved in a way that is environmentally sustainable, profitable to the livestock farmer and is consistent with aspirations for improved livestock nutrition, health, welfare and product quality? Given that grazed and conserved forage is the bedrock of sustainable ruminant production, this paper attempts to consider what challenges are ahead in terms of enhancing productive efficiency, reducing the polluting footprint of livestock agriculture and alleviating the endemic parasitism that occurs with grazing animals.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of long-term-enhanced UV-B, and combined UV-B with elevated CO(2) on dwarf shrub berry characteristics in a sub-arctic heath community. Germination of Vaccinium myrtillus was enhanced in seeds produced at elevated UV-B, but seed numbers and berry size were unaffected. Elevated UV-B and CO(2) stimulated the abundance of V. myrtillus berries, whilst UV-B alone stimulated the berry abundance of V. vitis-idaea and Empetrum hermaphroditum. Enhanced UV-B reduced concentrations of several polyphenolics in V. myrtillus berries, whilst elevated CO(2) increased quercetin glycosides in V. myrtillus, and syringetin glycosides and anthocyanins in E. hermaphroditum berries. UV-B?×?CO(2) interactions were found for total anthocyanins, delphinidin-3-hexoside and peonidin-3-pentosidein in V. myrtillus berries but not E. hermaphroditum. Results suggest positive impacts of UV-B on the germination of V. myrtillus and species-specific impacts of UV-B?×?elevated CO(2) on berry abundance and quality. The findings have relevance and implications for human and animal consumers plus seed dispersal and seedling establishment.  相似文献
