An active capping demonstration project in Washington, D.C., is testing the ability to place sequestering agents on contaminated sediments using conventional equipment and evaluating their subsequent effectiveness relative to conventional passive sand sediment caps. Selected active capping materials include: (1) AquaBlokTM, a clay material for permeability control; (2) apatite, a phosphate mineral for metals control; (3) coke, an organic sequestration agent; and (4) sand material for a control cap. All of the materials, except coke, were placed in 8,000‐ft test plots by a conventional clamshell method during March and April 2004. Coke was placed as a 1.25‐cm layer in a laminated mat due to concerns related to settling of the material. Postcap sampling and analysis were conducted during the first, sixth, and eighteenth months after placement. Although postcap sampling is expected to continue for at least an additional 24 months, this article summarizes the results of the demonstration project and postcap sampling efforts up to 18 months. Conventional clamshell placement was found to be effective for placing relatively thin (six‐inch) layers of active material. The viability of placing high‐value or difficult‐to‐place material in a controlled manner was successfully demonstrated with the laminated mat. Postcap monitoring indicates that all cap materials effectively isolated contaminants, but it is not yet possible to differentiate between conventional sand and active cap layer performance. Monitoring of the permeability control layer indicated effective reductions in groundwater seepage rates through the cap, but also showed the potential for gas accumulation and irregular release. All of the cap materials show deposition of new contaminated sediment onto the surface of the caps, illustrating the importance of source control in maintaining sediment quality. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

Compilation of published and unpublished data shows acid precipitation to be more widespread in the Pacific coastal states than is generally recognized. Although information is scattered and discontinuous, precipitation is definitely acidic in the Los Angeles Basin and north-central california, and in the Puget Sound region in Washington. Acid rain occurrences have been observed in western and eastern Oregon, but data are inadequate for regional generalization. New stations currently being established in Washington and Oregon, largely in resposnse to the recently renewed activity of Mount St. Helens, will greatly facilitate assessment of precipitation acidity in the Northwest. 相似文献

Municipal solid wastes generated each year contain potentially useful and recyclable materials for composites. Simultaneously, interest is high for the use of natural fibers, such as flax (Linum usitatissimum L.), in composites thus providing cost and environmental benefits. To investigate the utility of these materials, composites containing flax fibers with recycled high density polyethylene (HDPE) were created and compared with similar products made with wood pulp, glass, and carbon fibers. Flax was either enzyme- or dew-retted to observe composite property differences between diverse levels of enzyme formulations and retting techniques. Coupling agents would strengthen binding between fibers and HDPE but in this study fibers were not modified in anyway to observe mechanical property differences between natural fiber composites. Composites with flax fibers from various retting methods, i.e., dew- vs. enzyme-retting, behaved differently; dew-retted fiber composites resulted in both lower strength and percent elongation. The lowest level of enzyme-retting and the most economical process produces composites that do not appear to differ from the highest level of enzyme-retting. Flax fibers improved the modulus of elasticity over wood pulp and HDPE alone and were less dense than glass or carbon fiber composites. Likely, differences in surface properties of the various flax fibers, while poorly defined and requiring further research, caused various interactions with the resin that influenced composite properties. 相似文献

Analysis of bank erosion on the Merced River,Yosemite Valley,Yosemite National Park,California, USA 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Channel changes from 1919 to 1989 were documented in two study reaches of the Merced River in Yosemite National Park through
a review of historical photographs and documents and a comparison of survey data. Bank erosion was prevalent and channel width
increased an average of 27% in the upstream reach, where human use was concentrated. Here, trampling of the banks and riparian
vegetation was common, and banks eroded on straight stretches as frequently as on meander bends. Six bridges in the upper
reach constrict the channel by an average of 38% of the original width, causing severe erosion. In the downstream control
reach, where human use was minimal, channel widths both decreased and increased, with a mean increase of only 4% since 1919.
Bank erosion in the control reach occurred primarily on meander bends. The control reach also had denser stands of riparian
vegetation and a higher frequency of large woody debris in channels. There is only one bridge in the lower reach, located
at the downstream end. Since 1919, bank erosion in the impacted upstream reach contributed a significant amount of sediment
(74,800 tonnes, equivalent to 2.0 t/km2/yr) to the river. An analysis of 75 years of precipitation and hydrologic records showed no trends responsible for bank erosion
in the upper reach. Sediment input to the upper reach has not changed significantly during the study period. Floodplain soils
are sandy, with low cohesion and are easily detached by lateral erosion. The degree of channel widening was positively correlated
with the percentage of bare ground on the streambanks and low bank stability ratings. Low bank stability ratings were, in
turn, strongly associated with high human use areas. Channel widening and bank erosion in the upper reach were due primarily
to destruction of riparian vegetation by human trampling and the effect of bridge constrictions on high flow, and secondarily
to poorly installed channel revetments. Several specific recommendations for river restoration were provided to park management. 相似文献

The Columbia River Basin is the scene of a massive effort to restore populations of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) and steelhead (O. mykiss). Efficient restoration is confounded by a high level of complexity, competing sociopolitical goals and values, and uncertainty
about key system properties. Simulation models and other tools of systems analysis are important to development of a comprehensive,
regionally acceptable strategy. Hierarchy theory provides a useful paradigm for organized complexity within the Columbia Basin
and the basis for a trilevel hierarchical structure for organizing and integrating models. Life-stage models compose the most
basic simulation units at the lowest level in the proposed hierarchical modeling structure. Each life-stage model simulates
a distinct period in the life cycle of anadromous salmonids. Population models at the intermediate level simulate the complete
life cycles of salmon and steelhead populations. At the highest level in the hierarchy, interpopulation models simulate extensive,
long-term processes that affect multiple species and stocks. A hierarchical system of models is preferable to a single model
or to a group of models lacking formal structure. A principal advantage is that models have the correct spatial and temporal
resolution for analyzing questions at different scales. A hierarchical structure also facilitates the flow of information
among models, and aids in understanding the impacts of uncertainty. Constructing a hierarchy of models should involve both
bottom-up and top-down perspectives that maintain logical consistency among models, while allowing unique model structures
appropriate for each level in the hierarchy. 相似文献

A model based on K-theory has been developed for describing the short range air dispersion from area sources of non-buoyant toxics. Model parameter estimation is via boundary layer theory. Lateral dispersion by plume meander is considered but ail other sources of horizontal dispersion are neglected. The model can be applied on and near area sources and it can be adapted for predictions of downwind concentrations with a wide variety of meteorological Inputs. The model has been evaluated by simulating the data obtained during atmospheric tracer studies and by comparison to vinyl chloride concentrations near the BKK landfill in southern California. The model appears to represent a useful and accurate tool for regulatory planning and risk assessment close to area sources of toxics. 相似文献

This compact, high-flow device aerodynamically separates small particles from a gas stream by a series of annular truncated airfoils. The operating concept, design and performance of this novel particle separator are described. Tests results using corn starch and post-cyclone coal fly ash are presented. Particle collection efficiencies of 90% for corn starch and 70% for coal fly ash were measured at inlet velocities of 80 ft s−1 (2700 cfm) and (6 inches) water pressure drop with particle loading up to 4 gr ft−3 in air at standard conditions. Results from computer modeling using FLUENT are presented and compared to the tests. The aerodynamic particle separator is an attractive alternative to a cyclone collector. 相似文献

ABSTRACT“Waste-to-energy” (WTE) technologies have been presented as one of the avenues to improve the management of solid waste whilst promoting clean and healthy urban environments through the recovery of waste and generation of energy. Research suggests that with the right investment in technologies and institutional changes, waste can potentially become a resource that can contribute to the socio-economic development of cities. It is in this context that this paper presents a review of the literature on WTE technologies and their implications on sustainable waste management in urban areas. The paper particularly contributes to our understanding of WTE technologies and its potential on Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM) in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is estimated that the city of Johannesburg’s landfills airspace will be completely depleted by year 2023. This projection becomes a motivation for the identification of suitable WTE alternative avenues to manage waste in the city. The paper argues that WTE technologies can contribute significantly to sustainable waste management, economic growth, ecological and environmental well-being. 相似文献
