The destruction and colour removal of methylene blue were carried out by mediated electrochemical oxidation using cerium(IV) mediator in nitric acid medium using two-phase system and was applied for oxidation of organic compound. Organic compounds and mediator were taken in the organic and aqueous phases respectively. The influence of organic solvent type, cerium(III) concentration, dye concentration, stirring speed and temperature were investigated in order to find the optimum conditions of the system to check the removal of COD and colour in the organic phase. The decolourisation followed the pseudo-first order reaction for electrochemically oxidized cerium(IV). The maximum colour removal efficiency of 95% was achieved within 45 min in dichloromethane solvent system. The COD removal efficiency and colour removal rate were increased with increase in temperature and stirring speed.  相似文献

The use of nanomaterials in industrial sectors is currently widely accepted because of their unique beneficial properties. However, those unique properties can also induce toxic effects. Toxicity responses are induced by kinetic, dynamic, and catalytic properties, and by functionalization, net particle reactivity, agglomeration, and functional environment. Here, we review nanomaterial applications in food and consumer industries, genotoxic mechanisms, methods to study nanomaterials, and factors of toxicity.  相似文献

The mediated electrochemical oxidation (MEO) process using cerium(IV) in methanesulphonic acid (MSA) as the oxidizing medium was employed for the mineralization of phenol in batch and continuous feeding modes. Although nitric acid was an extensively studied electrolyte for organic mineralization reactions in MEO processes it does possess the problem of NO(x) gas production during the reduction of nitric acid in the cathode compartment of the electrochemical cell. This problem could be circumvented by proper choice of the electrolyte medium such as MSA. The mediator cerium in MSA solution was first oxidized to higher oxidation state using an electrochemical cell. The produced Ce(IV) oxidant was then used for the destruction of phenol. It was found that phenol could be mineralized to CO2 by Ce(IV) in MSA. The evolved CO2 was continuously measured and used for the calculation of destruction efficiency. The destruction efficiency was observed to be 85% based on CO2 evolution for 1000 ppm phenol solution at 80 degrees C in continuous feed mode.  相似文献

Quantification of uranium in human urine is a valuable technique for assessing occupational and public exposure to uranium. A reliable method has been developed and validated in the ARPANSA Radiochemistry Laboratory by means of standard radiochemical separation and purification techniques and measurement using high-resolution alpha spectrometry. This method can be used to evaluate the levels of naturally occurring 234U, 235U and 238U in urine. Method design and validation is the process of defining an analytical requirement, and then confirming that the method under consideration has performance capabilities consistent with what the application requires. The method was designed to measure levels down to 2 mBq/day of total uranium, corresponding to approximately 1/100th of the annual committed effective dose of 20 mSv. Validation tests were developed to assess selectivity, accuracy, recovery and quantification of uncertainty. The radiochemical recovery of this method was measured using (232)U tracer. The typical minimum detectable concentration for total uranium for 24-h urine samples is approximately 0.6 mBq/day or 0.019 microg/day.  相似文献

In recent years, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have attracted considerable interest in the field of food, agriculture and pharmaceuticals mainly due to its antibacterial activity. AgNPs have also been reported to possess toxic behavior. The toxicological behavior of nanomaterials largely depends on its size and shape which ultimately depend on synthetic protocol. A systematic and detailed analysis for size variation of AgNP by thermal co-reduction approach and its efficacy toward microbial and cellular toxicological behavior is presented here. With the focus to explore the size-dependent toxicological variation, two different-sized NPs have been synthesized, i.e., 60 nm (Ag60) and 85 nm (Ag85). A detailed microbial toxicological evaluation has been performed by analyzing minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), diameter of inhibition zone (DIZ), growth kinetics (GrK), and death kinetics (DeK). Comparative cytotoxicological behavior was analyzed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. It has been concluded by this study that the size of AgNPs can be varied, by varying the concentration of reactants and temperature called as “thermal co-reduction” approach, which is one of the suitable approaches to meet the same. Also, the smaller AgNP has shown more microbial and cellular toxicity.  相似文献

Surgical cotton production has drastically been increased in the past few years due to excessive use by medical health professionals especially in countries like India, which is among the top three exporters of cotton worldwide. The effluent generated from surgical cotton industries differ from textile effluents by the conspicuous absence of dyeing chemicals. This wastewater has a high concentration of suspended particles, COD, dissolved ions, organic carbon, and alkaline pH. Several studies have been published on the treatment of textile effluents and the degradation of dyeing chemicals, while the treatment studies on surgical cotton wastewater have been rarely reported in spite of their potential to cause pollution in receiving land/water bodies. Activated sludge microbes have been extensively studied and well documented in the treatment of several industrial effluent but does not match to the production of valuable biomass from algae. The global energy demand has prompted the scientific community to investigate and explore the possibility of using algae for energy production with simultaneous wastewater treatment. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no research articles have been published which compare the effectiveness of activated sludge microorganisms, microalgae, and macroalgae in removing contaminants from real wastewater. To date, there is a knowledge gap in understanding and selecting the right choice of biological system for effective and economical effluent treatment. In an attempt to minimize this gap, carbon removal by microalgae, macroalgae, and activated sludge microbes were investigated on real effluent from surgical cotton industries. It was observed that the strain of Chlorella vulgaris could dissipate 83% of COD from real wastewater, while consortia of macroalgae (consisting predominantly of Ulvaceae and Chaetomorpha) and activated sludge microbes could remove 81% and 69% of the carbon, respectively. The microalgal growth (in terms of wet weight) increased from 0.15 to 0.3 g, whereas the macroalgal wet weight increased from 1.5 to 3 g in over 7 days of batch experiments conducted in triplicates. This indicated the superlative performance of microalgae over activated sludge microbes in carbon dissipation.
