Residues of hexachlorobenzene-14C were found in all parts of wheat plants grown from treated seeds or in contaminated soil. Besides the parent compound and bound residues in plants and soil, very small amounts of soluble acidic metabolites were present in plants, which were characterized and determined quantitatively. 相似文献

To meet the growing demand for chocolate, cocoa (Theobroma cacao) agriculture is expanding and intensifying. Although this threatens tropical forests, cocoa sustainability initiatives largely overlook biodiversity conservation. To inform these initiatives, we analyzed how cocoa agriculture affects bird diversity at farm and landscape scales with a meta-analysis of 23 studies. We extracted 214 Hedges' g* comparisons of bird diversity and 14 comparisons of community similarity between a forest baseline and 4 farming systems that cover an intensification gradient in landscapes with high and low forest cover, and we summarized 119 correlations between cocoa farm features and bird diversity. Bird diversity declined sharply in low shade cocoa. Cocoa with >30% canopy cover from diverse trees retained bird diversity similar to nearby primary or mature secondary forest but held a different community of birds. Diversity of endemic species, frugivores, and insectivores (agriculture avoiders) declined, whereas diversity of habitat generalists, migrants, nectarivores, and granivores (agriculture associates) increased. As forest decreased on the landscape, the difference in bird community composition between forest and cocoa also decreased, indicating agriculture associates replaced agriculture avoiders in forest patches. Our results emphasize the need to conserve forested landscapes (land sparing) and invest in mixed-shade agroforestry (land sharing) because each strategy benefits a diverse and distinct biological community. 相似文献

The objective of this study is to provide a perspective on the extremes of sea-level variability and predictability for the
U.S.-Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI) on seasonal time-scales. Based on the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) model, the L-moments method has been used to estimate the model parameters. The bootstrap method has been used to define the exceedance
probability level of upper and lower bounds of the return periods at the 90% confidence interval. On the basis of these return
calculations and expected extremes of high sea level, the seasonal maxima of sea level and the varying likelihood of extreme
events have been estimated. For analyzing the predictability of the extremes of sea-level, a canonical correlation analysis
(CCA) statistical model has been developed. Findings reveal that there is seasonal climatology of extreme events in the vicinity
of USAPI that are variable on temporal and spatial scales. Some of the islands (Yap and Saipan) display considerably higher
seasonal extremes than the others for 20 to 100 year return periods because of typhoon-related storm surges. These surges
are likely to cause huge tidal large sea-level inundations and increased erosion to low-lying atolls/islands and result in
considerable damage to roads, harbors, unstable sandy beaches, and other major infrastructures. Finally, the need for evaluating
the extreme events and associated typhoons from a regional perspective has been stressed for coastal hazard management decision
analyses in the USAPI. 相似文献

A major issue in air pollution epidemiology is whether the associations that are found in the statistical analyses on the health effects of air pollution reflect real causal associations of single components or mixtures thereof, or just reflect statistical associations that are mainly the result of the high correlation between the separate components, one of them being the true causal factor. In a previous analysis on the relationship between daily SO2 levels and daily mortality in The Netherlands [Buringh, E., Fischer, P., Hoek, G., 2000. Is SO2 a causative factor for the PM-associated mortality risks in The Netherlands? Inhal. Toxicol. 12 (Suppl. 1), 55–60.], it was shown that the statistical significant association between daily variation in SO2 and daily mortality did not reflect a causal relation. Black Smoke levels in The Netherlands have decreased 4-fold during the 34 years in the period 1972–2006 (annual average from 27 μg m?3 to 6 μg m?3). This large decrease in concentrations enabled us to use the same approach for this component as was done earlier for SO2 to assess whether a decreasing trend in Black Smoke levels in The Netherlands is associated with an increasing trend in mortality relative risks or not.We used daily averaged Black Smoke (BS) data from 1972 to 2006. In the first two decades (1970–1990) only sparse data were available. Based on the availability of the data, we selected data from 1972 to 1974 and from 1982 to 1984 because during these two periods continuous daily measurement series were available. For the later years (1989–2006) data covering the whole of The Netherlands were available, giving a total of 24 years of daily data. Data on daily total mortality counts (excluding external causes), cardiovascular mortality and respiratory mortality for the whole population of The Netherlands were analyzed with regard to daily Black Smoke levels using generalized additive Poisson regression models (GAM). Period specific relative risk estimates were compared and differences in estimates between periods were evaluated. We found no consistent increase in relative risks for daily total and cause-specific mortality over time, despite the decreasing trend in the Black Smoke levels in The Netherlands. Average relative risks for total mortality varied over the different periods from 0.997 per 10 μg m?3 daily Black Smoke to 1.010 per 10 μg m?3. Average relative risks for cardiovascular mortality varied from 0.988 per 10 μg m?3 to 1.010 per 10 μg m?3 and for respiratory mortality from 1.000 to 1.010 per 10 μg m?3. For weekly averaged concentrations the average relative risks for total mortality varied over the different periods from 1.004 per 10 μg m?3 Black Smoke to 1.018 per 10 μg m?3. Average relative risks for cardiovascular mortality varied from 1.003 per 10 μg m?3 to 1.016 per 10 μg m?3 and for respiratory mortality from 1.000 to 1.050 per 10 μg m?3.The result of our analyses suggests that Black Smoke cannot be excluded as a potential causal agent because relative risks over time show no increasing trend despite the decreasing trend in Black Smoke concentrations. 相似文献

Island populations are vulnerable to introduced pathogens, as evidenced by extinction or population decline of several endemic Hawaiian birds caused by the malaria parasite, Plasmodium relictum (order Haemosporida). We analyzed blood samples from 363 birds caught near Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, for the presence of haemosporidian infections. We characterized parasite lineages by determining nucleotide variation of the parasite's mitochondrial cyt b gene. Fifty‐nine individuals were infected, and we identified 7 lineages of haemosporidian parasites. Fifty individuals were infected by 6 Haemoproteus sp. lineages, including a newly characterized lineage of Haem. (Parahaemoproteus) sp. CUH01. Nine individuals carried the P. relictum lineage GRW4, including 5 endemic Cuban Grassquits (Tiaris canorus) and 1 migratory Cape May Warbler (Setophaga tigrina). A sequence of the merozoite surface protein gene from one Cuban Grassquit infected with GRW4 matched that of the Hawaiian haplotype Pr9. Our results indicate that resident and migratory Cuban birds are infected with a malaria lineage that has severely affected populations of several endemic Hawaiian birds. We suggest GRW4 may be associated with the lack of several bird species on Cuba that are ubiquitous elsewhere in the West Indies. From the standpoint of avian conservation in the Caribbean Basin, it will be important to determine the distribution of haemosporidian parasites, especially P. relictum GRW4, in Cuba as well as the pathogenicity of this lineage in species that occur and are absent from Cuba. 相似文献

Many migratory animals are experiencing rapid population declines, but migration data with the geographic scope and resolution to quantify the complex network of movements between breeding and nonbreeding regions are often lacking. Determining the most frequently used migration routes and nonbreeding regions for a species is critical for understanding population dynamics and making effective conservation decisions. We tracked the migration of individual Wood Thrushes (Hylocichla mustelina) (n = 102) from across their range with light‐level geolocators and, for the first time, quantified migration routes and wintering regions for distinct breeding populations. We identified regional and species‐level migratory connectivity networks for this declining songbird by combining our tracking results with range‐wide breeding abundance estimates and forest cover data. More than 50% of the species occupied the eastern wintering range (Honduras to Costa Rica), a region that includes only one‐third of all wintering habitat and that is undergoing intensive deforestation. We estimated that half of all Wood Thrushes in North America migrate south through Florida in fall, whereas in spring approximately 73% funnel northward through a narrow span along the central U.S. Gulf Coast (88–93°W). Identifying migratory networks is a critical step for conservation of songbirds and we demonstrated with Wood Thrushes how it can highlight conservation hotspots for regional populations and species as a whole. 14C uptake was measured in experimental bottles suspended at a series of fixed depths (using subsamples from one sample depth), and was compared with estimates obtained from bottles provided with vertical movement similar to that which might occur in Langmuir circulations. In most experiments, the vertically cycled bottles gave estimates of integral photosynthesis 19 to 87% higher than estimates from the control series. Evidence from laboratory experiments detailing the change in photosynthesis over time at various irradiance levels shows that a higher lightsaturated photosynthetic rate under variable light conditions could account for the enhanced integral photosynthesis found in the bottles provided with vertical movement. 相似文献

Many animals use multiple signals in sexual communication, but our understanding of the interactions between multiple signals,
particularly in inexperienced breeders, is limited. In birds, delayed plumage maturation (DPM) is well documented; young birds
appear duller than adults, despite reaching sexual maturity. Age-related changes in song structure are also common in songbirds,
though the extent to which songs of yearling males differ from those of adults (delayed song maturation, DSM) and its prevalence
in species with DPM is unknown. We tested for DSM in the mate-attraction (repeat) song of a species with dramatic DPM, the
American redstart (Setophaga ruticilla). Repeat song structure of territorial yearling and adult males differed significantly, based on discriminant analysis of
nine non-collinear song features. Combined with previous evidence of delayed maturation in territorial (serial) song, we provide
the first evidence for DSM in different song types used in different behavioral contexts during the breeding season of a migratory
songbird. Within adults, variation in repeat song was associated with pairing, earlier onset of breeding, and number of offspring
sired, suggesting a potential benefit for expressing more adult-like song. We found no relationship between the expression
of adult-like repeat song and plumage in either age class. These results indicate that delayed maturation of repeat song in
yearling redstarts is not due to a generalized delay in signal development, and suggest further work is needed to determine
whether mate attraction (for both yearling and adult males) provides greater pressure to sound more “adult-like” than to look
more “adult-like”. 相似文献
