Extinction and Colonization of Birds on Habitat Islands   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1  
Abstract: We used point-count and transect surveys to estimate the distribution and abundance of eight scrub-breeding bird species in 34 habitat fragments and the urban matrix in southern California. We then calculated local extinction and colonization rates by comparing our data with surveys conducted in 1987. We classified factors that influence extinction and colonization rates into two types: (1) extrinsic factors, which are characteristics of the habitat fragments such as area, age, and isolation and (2) intrinsic factors, which are characteristics of the species that inhabit fragments, such as body size and population density. Over the past decade, at least one species went locally extinct in over 50% of the fragments, and local extinctions were almost twice as common as colonizations. Fragment size and, to a lesser extent, fragment age were the most important extrinsic factors determining extinction and colonization. Density indices of scrub birds were the most important intrinsic factors determining extinction rates, predicting the number of sites occupied, the probability of local extinction, relative area requirements, and time to local extinction.  相似文献

Exposure to perchlorate is widespread in the United States and many studies have attempted to character the perchlorate exposure by estimating the average daily intakes of perchlorate. These approaches provided population-based estimates, but did not provide individual-level exposure estimates. Until recently, exposure activity database such as CSFII, TDS and NHANES become available and provide opportunities to evaluate the individual-level exposure to chemical using exposure surveillance dataset. In this study, we use perchlorate as an example to investigate the usefulness of urinary biomarker data for predicting exposures at the individual level. Specifically, two analyses were conducted: (1) using data from a controlled human study to examine the ability of a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model to predict perchlorate concentrations in single-spot and cumulative urine samples; and (2) using biomarker data from a population-based study and a PBPK model to demonstrate the challenges in linking urinary biomarker concentrations to intake doses for individuals. Results showed that the modeling approach was able to characterize the distribution of biomarker concentrations at the population level, but predicting the exposure-biomarker relationship for individuals was much more difficult. The type of information needed to reduce the uncertainty in estimating intake doses, for individuals, based on biomarker measurements is discussed.  相似文献

This study adopted an open-ended exploratory approach to elicit the perspectives of a selection of six Climate Challenge Fund projects. This central idea is that communities' perspective on attempted carbon reduction initiative in their areas has use in other contexts and could enable better design of such interventions in future. The main finding was that emphasising local benefits was conducive to their achieving local involvement in the project. The results of this research should be tested in other contexts. Three broad implications for the design of community carbon reduction initiatives are raised in assuming these outcomes are correct. First, the community hosting such initiatives should be perceived to hold a degree of power over the project. Second, central authorities should not be overly prohibitive about the motivations of those participating in such projects. Finally, the use of non-environmental messaging has value in shifting people to more pro-environmental behaviours.  相似文献

Machair is a highly specialised and complex sand dune habitat confined globally to the west coasts of Ireland and Scotland. Irish machair is designated as a priority habitat under the EU Habitats Directive, with the habitat coverage restricted to the machair grassland. The main goals of the study were to describe the Acari fauna inhabiting the Irish machair and to determine the uniqueness of its mite communities in the context of habitat protection. Ten Irish machair sites were selected and samples were taken from the machair grassland and from two types of dunes within the wider machair system: shifting dunes (foredunes) occurring at the beach and stable (fixed) dunes located in the transition zone to the inland grassland flat areas. One hundred and eleven mite taxa were recovered. The most widespread was Scutovertex cf arenocolus Pfingstl et al. 2009, a halophilous species that has been found in the epilittoral zone of Baltic and European Atlantic coasts. The genus Autogneta Hull 1916 (Oribatida: Oppiidae) and the oribatid species Hermaniella granulata (Nicolet 1855) were recorded for the first time for Ireland. Peloptulus cf gibbus Mihelčič 1957, may also be a new record. Multivariate analysis showed that community composition varied between the areas sampled in the machair systems and that in the machair grassland, an Annex I priority habitat in Ireland, was especially different from both dune types sampled. The assemblages also varied significantly between the different sites sampled in the study.  相似文献

The waste treatment and rejuvenation of spent electroless nickel baths has attracted a considerable amount of interest from electroplating shops, electroless nickel suppliers, universities and regulatory agencies due to the finite life of the baths and the associated waste that the process generates. It is generally accepted that the recycling of electroless nickel solutions is one of the most important challenges facing the electroless nickel-plating industry today. This review presents an overview of the existing and emerging technologies for extending the life of electroless nickel baths. The electroless nickel bath regenerative technologies are appraised from the standpoint of removal of harmful bath components, loss of valuable bath components, cost-effectiveness, secondary waste generation and ease of implementation. The review draws upon an array of academic papers, industrial/company reports, conference proceedings and patents in order to allow the reader to evaluate and compare the different technologies and options for extending the life of electroless nickel-plating solutions.  相似文献
