Green leaf volatiles enhance sex attractant pheromone of the tobacco budworm,Heliothis virescens (Lep.: Noctuidae)

Summary Components of the green leaf volatile complex (Z-3-hexenyl acetate andE-2-hexenyl acetate) were shown to enhance responses of tobacco budworm,Heliothis virescens, males to the sex attractant pheromone of conspecific females in the field. The results are discussed with regard to green leaf volatiles which enhance the attractant pheromone of a cohabiting species, and serve as attractants of a parasitoid of conspecific larvae.

Sustainable livelihoods and people’s vulnerability in the face of coastal hazards

The present study investigates into the link between people’s vulnerability in the face of coastal hazards and sustainable livelihoods. It focuses on the town of Borongan in the Philippines and draws on questionnaire-based surveys and focus group discussions. This research shows that local fishermen are often compelled to go out fishing despite pending typhoon or storm surge to sustain the daily needs of their family. Its also demonstrates that the capacity of these people to protect themselves from the threat is constrained by poor and fragile livelihoods. In the event of a crisis, the study argues that people resort to a range of adjustments on their daily life which is rooted in the strength and diversity of their livelihoods. To reduce people’s vulnerability and enhance capacities to face coastal hazards, the study fosters Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction with special emphasis to sustainable livelihoods.     

Tax-free Financing of Pollution Control Facilities

Recent proposed Internal Revenue Service regulations, published on June 5, 1971 and implementing Section 103 (c) of the Internal Revenue Service Code, provide additional methods for financing pollution control equipment in unlimited amounts through the use of tax-exempt industrial development revenue bonds. Interest income on the bonds is exempt to the recipient from federal income tax under existing statutes and court decisions, except that such exemption is not generally available with respect to any bonds for any period during which the bond is held by a person who is a substantial user of a project financed with the proceeds of the bonds or a related person within the meaning of Section 103 (c) (7) of the Code. These proposed regulations implement the 1968 amendments to the Internal Revenue Code which authorize the issuance of tax-exempt bonds by local governmental agencies for pollution control improvements. The Legislature of Florida has recently enacted the Florida Industrial Development Financing Act, which creates the local governmental agencies contemplated by the federal legislation and significantly enlarges the power of local governmental agencies to issue industrial development bonds for pollution control.     

A pear-derived kairomone with pheromonal potency that attracts male and female codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.)

Ethyl (2E, 4Z)-2,4-decadienoate, a pear-derived volatile, is a species-specific, durable, and highly potent attractant to the codling moth (CM), Cydia pomonella (L.), a serious pest of walnuts, apples, and pears worldwide. This kairomone attracts both CM males and virgin and mated females. It is highly attractive to CM in both walnut and apple orchard contexts, but has shown limited effectiveness in a pear orchard context. Rubber septa lures loaded with ethyl (2E, 4Z)-2,4-decadienoate remained attractive for several months under field conditions. At the same low microgram load rates on septa, the combined gender capture of CM in kairomone-baited traps was similar to the capture rate of males in traps baited with codlemone, the major sex pheromone component. The particular attribute of attracting CM females renders this kairomone a novel tool for monitoring population flight and mating-ovipositional status, and potentially a major new weapon for directly controlling CM populations.
