Multivariate abundance data are commonly collected in ecology, and used to explore questions of “community composition”—how relative abundance of different taxa changes with environmental conditions. In this paper, we propose a log-linear marginal modeling approach for analyzing such compositional count data, via generalized estimating equations. This method exploits the multiplicative nature of log-linear models for counts, by reparameterizing models that describe marginal effects on mean abundance. This allows partitioning into “main effects” and compositional effects, which is appealing for interpretation. We apply the proposed approach to reanalyze compositional counts of benthic invertebrates from Delaware Bay, and data of invertebrate communities inhabiting Acacia plants in eastern Australia. In both cases we resort to a resampling approach to make inferences about regression parameters, because the number of clusters was not large compared to cluster size.  相似文献

We present an approach to estimate hourly grid-cell surface ozone concentrations based on observations from point monitoring sites in space, for comparison with grid-based results from the SARMAP photochemical air-quality model for a region of northern California. Statistical estimation is carried out on a transformed (square root) scale, followed by back-transforming to the original scale of ozone in parts per billion, adjusting for bias and variance. We estimate a spatially-varying diurnal mean structure and a non-separable space-time correlation structure on the transformed scale. Temporal pre-whitening is followed by modelling of a spatially non-stationary, diurnally-varying spatial correlation structure using a spatial deformation approach. Comparisons of SARMAP model results with the estimated grid-cell ozone levels are presented.  相似文献

Wildfire behaviors are complex and are of interest to fire managers and scientists for a variety of reasons. Many of these important behaviors are directly measured from the cumulative burn area time series of individual wildfires; however, estimating cumulative burn area time series is challenging due to the magnitude of measurement errors and missing entries. To resolve this, we introduce two state space models for reconstructing wildfire burn area using repeated observations from multiple data sources that include different levels of measurement error and temporal gaps. The constant growth parameter model uses a few parameters and assumes a burn area time series that follows a logistic growth curve. The non-constant growth parameter model uses a time-varying logistic growth curve to produce detailed estimates of the burn area time series that permit sudden pauses and pulses of growth. We apply both reconstruction models to burn area data from 13 large wildfire incidents to compare the quality of the burn area time series reconstructions and computational requirements. The constant growth parameter model reconstructs burn area time series with minimal computational requirements, but inadequately fits observed data in most cases. The non-constant growth parameter model better describes burn area time series, but can also be highly computationally demanding. Sensitivity analyses suggest that in a typical application, the reconstructed cumulative burn area time series is fairly robust to minor changes in the prior distributions.  相似文献

The past two decades have witnessed an increasing interest in the use of space-time models for a wide range of environmental problems. The fundamental tool used to embody both the temporal and spatial components of the phenomenon in question is the covariance model. The empirical estimation of space-time covariance models can prove highly complex if simplifying assumptions are not employed. For this reason, many studies assume both spatiotemporal stationarity, and the separability of spatial and temporal components. This second assumption is often unrealistic from the empirical point of view. This paper proposes the use of a model in which non-separability arises from temporal non-stationarity. The model is used to analyze tropospheric ozone data from the Emilia-Romagna Region of Italy.  相似文献

Identifying the major sources contributing to air pollution is a problem of fundamental importance in developing effective air quality management plans. Multivariate receptor modeling aims to achieve this goal by unfolding the air pollution data into components associated with different sources based on factor analysis models. We analyze the PM10 data obtained from 17 monitoring sites in Seoul to locate the major source regions using multivariate receptor modeling. The model uncertainty caused by the unknown number of sources and identifiability conditions is assessed by posterior probability of each model. The estimated source spatial profiles seem to be consistent with our prior expectation about the PM10 sources in Seoul.  相似文献

Ratio data, observations in which one random value is divided by another random value, present unique analytical challenges. The best statistical technique varies depending on the unit on which the inference is based. We present three environmental case studies where ratios are used to compare two groups, and we provide three parametric models from which to simulate ratio data. The models describe situations in which (1) the numerator variance and mean are proportional to the denominator, (2) the numerator mean is proportional to the denominator but its variance is proportional to a quadratic function of the denominator and (3) the numerator and denominator are independent. We compared standard approaches for drawing inference about differences between two distributions of ratios: t-tests, t-tests with transformations, permutation tests, the Wilcoxon rank test, and ANCOVA-based tests. Comparisons between tests were based both on achieving the specified alpha-level and on statistical power. The tests performed comparably with a few notable exceptions. We developed simple guidelines for choosing a test based on the unit of inference and relationship between the numerator and denominator.  相似文献
