In this study, we focused on water quality in an urban canal and the Mekong River in the city of Can Tho, a central municipality of the Mekong Delta region, southern Vietnam. Water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, BOD5, CODCr, Na+, Cl?, NH4 +?N, SO4 2??S, NO3 ??N, and NO2 ??N for both canal and river, and tide level of the urban canal, were monitored once per month from May 2010 to April 2012. The urban canal is subject to severe anthropogenic contamination, owing to poor sewage treatment. In general, water quality in the canal exhibited strong tidal variation, poorer at lower tides and better at higher tides. Some anomalies were observed, with degraded water quality under some high-tide conditions. These were associated with flow from the upstream residential area. Therefore, it was concluded that water quality in the urban canal changed with a balance between dilution effects and extent of contaminant supply, both driven by tidal fluctuations in the Mekong River.  相似文献

A survey of methyl chloride (CH3Cl)-emitting plants was performed at a subtropical island in Japan (Iriomote Island). Among the 187 species of tropical/subtropical plants investigated, 33 species from a variety of families were identified as CH3Cl-emitting plants. The strongest emitters were Osmunda banksiifolia, Cibotium balometz, Angiopteris palmiformis, Vitex rotundifolia, Vitex trifolia, and Excoecaria agalloch, each with CH3Cl emission rates exceeding 1microg (gdrywt)(-1)h(-1). The first three species are ferns, and the last three are halophilous plants. Based on our results, the character of CH3Cl emission is likely to be shared at the genus level but not always at the family level. The atmospheric CH3Cl distribution measured on Iriomote Island showed significant enhancement in forested sites (up to 2750 ppt) and a higher concentration on the downwind shore than on the upwind shore. As previously reported, our findings provide strong evidence for the high emission of CH3Cl from tropical/subtropical forests.  相似文献

This report shows that cesium can be immobilized in soils with an efficiency of 96.4% by ball milling with nano-metallic Ca/PO4. In Japan, the major concern on 137Cs deposition and soil contamination due to the emission from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant showed up after a massive quake on March 11, 2011. The accident rated 7, the highest possible on the international nuclear event scale, released 160 petabecquerels (PBq) of iodine 131I and 15 PBq of 137Cs according to the Japanese Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency. Both 137Cs and 131I radioactive nuclides are increasing cancer risk. Nonetheless, 137Cs, with a half-life of about 30 years compared with 8 days for 131I, is a major threat for agriculture and stock farming and, in turn, human life for decades. Therefore, in Japan, the 137Cs fixation and immobilization in contaminated soil is the most important problem, which should be solved by suitable technologies. Ball milling treatment is a promising treatment for the remediation of cesium-contaminated soil in dry conditions. Here, we studied the effect, factors and mechanisms of soil Cs immobilization by ball milling with the addition of nano-metallic Ca/CaO/NaH2PO4, termed “nano-metallic Ca/PO4.” We used scanning electron microscopy combined with electron dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and X-ray diffraction. Results show that immobilization efficiency increases from 56.4% in the absence of treatment to 89.9, 91.5, and 97.7 when the soil is ball-milled for 30, 60 and 120 min, respectively. The addition of nano-metallic Ca/PO4 increased the immobilization efficiency to about 96.4% and decreased the ball milling time. SEM/EDS analysis allows us to observe that the amount of Cs decreased on soil particle surface. Use of nano-metallic Ca/PO4 over a short milling time also decreases Cs leaching. Therefore, ball milling with nano-metallic Ca/PO4 treatment may be potentially applicable for the remediation of radioactive Cs-contaminated soil in dry conditions.  相似文献

This report shows that soil heavy metals can be totally immobilized by grinding with nano-Fe/Ca/CaO. Remediation of soils contaminated by heavy metals is a critical issue in Japan. Indeed, contaminated soils are notoriously difficult to remediate using available technologies. Major setbacks in typical immobilization techniques for heavy metals are wet conditions, forming secondary effluents and further treatment for effluents. Solidification with nano-Fe/Ca/CaO dispersion mixture is a promising treatment for the total immobilization of soil heavy metals As, Cd, Cr, Pb, and separation in dry conditions. Here, we studied the heavy metal immobilization by simple grinding with the addition of three mixtures: nano-Fe/CaO, nano-Fe/Ca/CaO, and nano-Fe/Ca/CaO/PO4. Samples were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and scanning electron microscopy combined with electron dispersive spectroscopy (SEM–EDS). Results show that the addition of nano-Fe/Ca/CaO immobilized 95–99 % of heavy metals, versus 65–80 % by simple grinding. After treatment, 36–45 wt% of magnetic and 64–55 wt% of nonmagnetic fractions of soil were separated. Their condensed heavy metal concentration was 85–95 % and 10–20 %, respectively. Nano-Fe/Ca/CaO treatment reduced the concentration of leachates heavy metals to values lower than the Japan soil elution standard regulatory threshold of 0.01 mg/l for As, Cd, and Pb; and 0.05 mg/l for Cr. This technology can therefore immobilize totally soil heavy metals and reduce heavy metal by separation.  相似文献

This study investigated the use of a nanometallic Ca and CaO dispersion mixture for the immobilization of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr and Pb) in contaminated soil. Simple grinding achieved 85-90% heavy metal immobilization, but it can be enhanced further to 98-100% by addition of a nanometallic Ca/CaO dispersion mixture produced by grinding. Observations using SEM-EDS elemental maps and semi-quantitative analysis showed that the amounts of As, Cd, Cr, and Pb measurable on the soil particle surface decrease after nanometallic Ca/CaO treatment. The leachable heavy metal concentrations were reduced after nanometallic Ca/CaO treatment to concentrations lower than the Japan soil elution standard regulatory threshold: <0.01 mg L−1 for As, Cd, and Pb; and 0.05 mg L−1 for Cr. Effects of soil moisture and pH on heavy metal immobilization were not strongly influenced. The most probable mechanisms for the enhancement of heavy metal immobilization capacity with nanometallic Ca/CaO treatment might be due to adsorption and entrapment of heavy metals into newly formed aggregates, thereby prompting aggregation of soil particles and enclosure/binding with Ca/CaO-associated immobile salts. Results suggest that the nanometallic Ca/CaO mixture is suitable for use in immobilization of heavy-metal-contaminated soil under normal moisture conditions.  相似文献

This report presents our results in a low-temperature mechanochemical hydrodechlorination process applied to fly ash coming from a municipal waste incinerator in order to efficiently remove all traces of PCDDs, PCDFs and PCBs. We found that the most suitable degradation agent is a mixture of metallic calcium and calcium oxide. A sample of fly ash presenting a TEQ of 5200 pg g−1 was completely detoxified (no traces of PCDDs, PCDFs and PCBs detected) after ball-milling at 400 rpm over night.  相似文献

Zirconium was loaded onto orange waste, a cheap and available agricultural waste in Japan, to investigate the feasibility of its utilization for phosphorus recovery from secondary effluent and side-stream liquid, which contain 5.9 and 68.2 mg/dm3 phosphorus, respectively. The phosphorus removal from side-stream liquid by using zirconium-loaded saponified orange waste (Zr-SOW) gel increased with an increasing solid/liquid ratio, and it was found that Zr-SOW gel showed better performance than zirconium ferrite. The prepared adsorbent was effective for phosphorus removal and exhibited a reasonably high adsorption capacity, twice than that of zirconium ferrite. The secondary effluent was treated in a column packed with Zr-SOW gel, and an dynamic adsorption capacity of 1.3 mol-P/kg was attained. The adsorbed phosphorus from the column was successfully eluted as a concentrated form by using a small amount of 0.2 M NaOH. Throughout the elution process, zirconium was not leaked from the adsorption gel.  相似文献

The mid-gut gland of the scallop contains saccharification enzymes such as cellulase and amylase, and these enzymes have been disposed of together with the mid-gut gland after the removal of the adductor muscle, an edible part of the scallop. We used a drip from the mid-gut gland of the scallop, obtained by squeezing the gland, as an inexpensive enzyme mixture and tried to produce bioethanol from the glucans present in sea lettuce by the method of simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) with the use of baker’s yeast. The ethanol concentration attained was as high as 7.2 g/L, which corresponded to ~37% of the conversion of glucans in sea lettuce in the solid-state SSF. Furthermore, we ascertained that the drip and sea lettuce contain nutrients that are indispensable for maintaining the yeast activity, and, thus, the SSF did not require any additional nutrients, such as yeast extract or peptone, the use of which increases the cost of fermentation to a high level.  相似文献

In order to screen for the best species for mitigating nitrogen dioxide (NO2) by plants at urban levels, we investigated assimilation of nitrogen dioxide by 70 taxa of woody plants that are mostly utilized as roadside trees. They were fumigated with 15N-labeled NO2 at 0.1 microl l(-1) for 8h, and the amount of reduced nitrogen derived from NO2 (in mg Ng(-1) dry weight) in the leaves (designated NO2 assimilation capability hereafter) were determined. Data were analyzed in the comparison with the previously reported ones obtained at 4 microl l(-1) NO2. Among the 70 taxa, the value of NO2 assimilation capability differed by a factor of 122 between the highest (Prunus yedoensis; 0.061) and the lowest (Cryptomeria japonica; 0.0005). Based on the analysis of NO2 assimilation capability values at 0.1 and 4 micro l(-1) NO2, the 70 taxa of woody plants appeared to be classified into four types; those of high NO2 assimilation and high NO2 resistance, those of high NO2 assimilation but low NO2 resistance, those of low NO2 assimilation and low NO2 resistance, and those of low NO2 assimilation but high NO2 resistance. The first, second, third and fourth types include 13, 11, 35 and 11 taxa, respectively. The broad-leaf deciduous trees may have advantages of high biomass and fast growth as compared with woody plants of other habits. Thus, four broad-leaf deciduous species, Robinia pseudo-acacia, Sophora japonica, Populus nigra and Prunus lannesiana, were concluded here to be the best phytoremediators for the urban air.  相似文献
