Natural hazards cause great damage to humankind and the surrounding ecosystem. They can cast certain indelible changes on the natural system. One such tsunami event occurred on 26 December 2004 and caused serious damage to the environment, including deterioration of groundwater quality. This study addresses the groundwater quality variation before and after the tsunami from Pumpuhar to Portnova in Tamil Nadu coast using geochemical methods. As a part of a separate Ph.D. study on the salinity of groundwater from Pondicherry to Velankanni, water quality of this region was studied with the collection of samples during November 2004, which indicated that shallow aquifers were not contaminated by sea water in certain locations. These locations were targeted for post-tsunami sample collection during the months of January, March and August 2005 from shallow aquifers. Significant physical mixing (confirmed with mixing models) within the aquifer occurred during January 2005, followed by precipitation of salts in March and complete leaching and dissolution of these salts in the post-monsoon season of August. As a result, maximum impact of tsunami water was observed in August after the onset of monsoon. Tsunami water inundated inland water bodies and topographic lows where it remained stagnant, especially in the near-shore regions. Maximum tsunami inundation occurred along the fluvial distributary channels, and it was accelerated by topography to a certain extent where the southern part of the study area has a gentler bathymetry than the north.  相似文献

A comprehensive research has been conducted to explore the influence of sintering on the properties of fly ash aggregate containing clay binders (bentonite and kaolinite). Fly ash aggregate containing clay binders, have been subjected to various sintering temperatures at different durations of 700?C1400?°C and 15?C120?min, respectively. The variation in aggregate properties, viz strength, water absorption, density and shrinkage during sintering, have been determined and discussed. In addition to these, the uniformity of sintering and rate of water absorption of sintered aggregate were also determined. No significant changes in aggregate properties were observed for aggregate sintered up to 900?°C, due to the insufficient sintering temperature range. However, the aggregate properties substantially enhanced for temperature above 1000?°C, which is attributed to the activation of liquid phase sintering. For temperatures between 1000 and 1300?°C, the aggregate with bentonite shows significant increase in shrinkage (30?%), density (density ratio 0.70), higher ten percent fines value (TPFV) (6.13?tonne), reduction in porosity (35?%), and water absorption of 4?%. However, at 1400?°C, the aggregate properties degraded due to the decomposition of mineral phases in bentonite. For aggregates with kaolinite, highest TPFV of 8.5?tonne with lowest water absorption of 2?% have been observed at 1400?°C. The presence of a higher amount of interconnected pores for aggregates sintered between 700 and 1000?°C leads to a higher rate of water absorption and then reduces to 30?% for temperatures between 1200 and 1300 and 1200 to 1400?°C for bentonite and kaolinite aggregates, respectively. This reduction is due to the reduced interconnected pores. Duration of sintering has no impact on the aggregate properties for temperatures up to 800 and 1000?°C for aggregates with bentonite and kaolinite, respectively. However, between 1000 and 1400?°C, there has been considerable improvement in the aggregate properties for increasing duration up to 60?min. In comparison, during sintering, aggregates with bentonite possessed better properties for temperature less than 1000?°C, whereas aggregates with kaolinite exhibited superior properties between 1100 and 1400?°C.  相似文献

Coral reef fishes are exploited without the knowledge of their sustainability and their possible effect in altering the community structure of a coral reef ecosystem. Alteration of the community structure could cause a decline in the health of coral reefs and its services. We documented the coral community structure, status of live corals and reef fish assemblages in Palk Bay at the reef fishing hotspots and its nearby reef area with minimum fishing pressure and compared it with a control reef area where reef fishing was banned for more than two decades. The comparison was based on the percent cover of different forms of live corals, their diversity and the density and diversity of reef fishes. The reef fish stock in the reef fishing hotspots and its neighbouring reef was lower by 61 and 38 %, respectively compared to the control reef. The herbivore fish Scarus ghobban and Siganus javus were exploited at a rate of 250 and 105 kg month?1 fishermen?1, respectively, relatively high comparing the small reef area. Live and dead corals colonized by turf algae were predominant in both the reef fishing hotspots and its nearby coral ecosystems. The percent cover of healthy live corals and live corals colonized by turf algae was <10 and >80 %, respectively, in the intensively fished coral ecosystems. The corals were less diverse and the massive Porites and Favia colonies were abundant in the intensive reef fishing sites. Results of this study suggest that the impact of reef fish exploitation was not solely restricted to the intensively fished reefs, but also to the nearby reefs which play a critical role in the resilience of degraded reef ecosystems.  相似文献

A holistic appraisal of the quality of groundwater from the Tuticorin District has been conducted using multivariate statistical and spatial analyses. The objectives of the study were to delineate the spatial and temporal variabilities in groundwater quality and to understand its suitability for human uses. A total of 100 groundwater samples were collected and analyzed for major cations and anions during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon. Water quality index rating was calculated to quantify overall water quality for human consumption. The PRM samples exhibit poor quality in greater percentage when compared with POM due to the dilution after rainfall. Correlation, factor analysis, and plot of the factor scores reflect the seawater intrusion and weathering process. The mineral stability diagrams indicated that the groundwater is in equilibrium with kaolinite and Ca-montmorillonite, whereas Gibbs plot showed that the chemical composition of groundwater in both districts is controlled by the natural weathering processes irrespective of seasons. The major water type identified in this study is the Ca2+–Mg2+–HCO3 ? type, which degrades into predominantly Na+–Cl?–SO4 2? more saline groundwater toward the coast.  相似文献

Socio-economic development of mankind and well-being depend on the environment and the way in which development influences the environment. Thus, environment and development are interdependent. In fact, economic development is closely linked with the development of resources. These resources can be classified into three categories: public goods, semi-public goods (also known as common property resources) and private goods. In poor countries common property resources make a valuable contribution to the sustainable livelihoods of rural populations. The impact of globalisation on the commons shows various patterns of ownership, control, use and misuse. The commons were subjected to degradation as well as conservation in the process of centralized management in India. After the reform period, the administration of natural resources was given significant attention by specialized departments such as the Forest Department and the Revenue Department. All the land, apart from private land, was regarded as state property and controlled by the state. This paper highlights the need to examine the common property resources sector in the context of wider economic policy reform processes in the Indian economy.  相似文献

Heavy metal–resistant bacterial strains were isolated from heavy metal–contaminated soils and identified as Bacillus sp. and Leclercia adecarboxylata on the basis of their morphology and biochemical characters using the VITEK 2 Systems Version 05.02. The heavy metal and antibiotic resistance of the isolates were studied. A green house pot experiment was conducted to examine the bacterial ability to extract the lead in soils and for their effect on lead uptake by Ricinus communis in an artificially contaminated soil. Bacterial inoculated pots increased the biomass of the R. communis compared to the uninoculated control, and the root growth of the plant was also increased in the inoculated pot. The experimental data confirmed that lead‐resistant bacteria have a pronounced effect on heavy metal uptake in plants, which may provide a new bacterially assisted phytoremediation of metal‐contaminated soils. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献
