Arabic gum (AG) is the most common emulsifier used for beverage emulsions. Cashew tree gum (CG) is a biological macromolecule that has been proposed as a substitute for the AG, although their technological properties comparison is still necessary. The aim of this study was to evaluate an isolation method for CG, and then evaluate CG technological properties in comparison to AG. The CG isolation methodology was improved using a small solvent amount. CG zeta-potential ranged from +8.0 mV (pH 2) to ?9.7 mV (pH 5), while the electric charge in solution of AG ranged from ?2.7 mV (pH 2) to ?28.6 mV (pH 6). As compared to AG, the CG showed a 50 % higher swelling, a 36 % lower oil absorption capacity, a slightly lower (4–8 %) solubility and lower consistency. CG is a feasible polyelectrolyte, promotes lower consistency solutions, and exhibits good swelling property. 相似文献

This in vitro study investigates the impact of silica-coated magnetite particles (Fe3O4@SiO2/SiDTC, hereafter called IONP; 2.5 mg L?1) and its interference with co-exposure to persistent contaminant (mercury, Hg; 50 μg L?1) during 0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 24, 48, and 72 h on European eel (Anguilla anguilla) brain and evaluates the significance of the glutathione (GSH) redox system in this context. The extent of damage (membrane lipid peroxidation, measured as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, TBARS; protein oxidation, measured as reactive carbonyls, RCs) decreased with increasing period of exposure to IONP or IONP + Hg which was accompanied with differential responses of glutathione redox system major components (glutathione reductase, GR; glutathione peroxidase, GPX; total GSH, TGSH). The occurrence of antagonism between IONP and Hg impacts was evident at late hour (72 h), where significantly decreased TBARS and RC levels and GR and glutathione sulfo-transferase (GST) activity imply the positive effect of IONP + Hg concomitant exposure against Hg-accrued negative impacts [vs. early (2 h) hour of exposure]. A period of exposure-dependent IONP alone and IONP + Hg joint exposure-accrued impact was perceptible. Additionally, increased susceptibility of the GSH redox system to increased period of exposure to Hg was depicted, where insufficiency of elevated GR for the maintenance of TGSH required for membrane lipid and cellular protein protection was displayed. This paper presents a framework for the study of policy implementation in highly uncertain natural resource systems in which
uncertainty cannot be characterized by probability distributions. We apply the framework to parametric uncertainty in the
traditional Gordon–Schaefer model of a fishery to illustrate how performance can be sacrificed (traded-off) for reduced sensitivity
and hence increased robustness, with respect to model parameter uncertainty. With sufficient data, our robustness–vulnerability
analysis provides tools to discuss policy options. When less data are available, it can be used to inform the early stages
of a learning process. Several key insights emerge from this analysis: (1) the classic optimal control policy can be very
sensitive to parametric uncertainty, (2) even mild robustness properties are difficult to achieve for the simple Gordon–Schaefer
model, and (3) achieving increased robustness with respect to some parameters (e.g., biological parameters) necessarily results
in increased sensitivity (decreased robustness) with respect to other parameters (e.g., economic parameters). We thus illustrate
fundamental robustness–vulnerability trade-offs and the limits to robust natural resource management. Finally, we use the

Sandy beach habitat where sea turtles nest will be affected by multiple climate change impacts. Before these impacts occur, knowledge of how nest site selection and hatching success vary with beach microhabitats is needed to inform managers on how to protect suitable habitats and prepare for scientifically valid mitigation measures at beaches around the world. At a highly successful green turtle (Chelonia mydas) rookery at Akumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico, we measured microhabitat characteristics along the beach crawl (rejected sites) and related nest site conditions (selected sites) to subsequent hatching success rates for 64 nesting events. To our knowledge, this is the first study to report environmental data along the nesting crawl for a green turtle population and the first to use natural breaks in the data to describe their preferred habitat ranges. Our results indicate that turtles were likely using a combination of cues to find nest sites, mainly higher elevations and lower sand surface temperatures (Kruskal-Wallis test, H?=?19.84, p?<?0.001; H?=?10.78, p?<?0.001). Hatching success was significantly and negatively correlated to sand temperature at cloaca depth (Spearman’s ρ?=??0.27, p?=?0.04). Indeed, the preferred range for cloaca sand temperatures at the nest site (26.3–27.5 °C) had significantly higher hatching success rates compared to the highest temperature range (Tukey HSD?=?0.47, p?=?0.05). Sand temperatures at various depths were intercorrelated, and surface and cloaca depth sand temperatures were correlated to air temperature (ρ?=?0.70, p?=?0.00; ρ?=?0.26, p?=?0.04). Therefore, rising air temperatures could alter sand temperature cues for suitable nest sites, preferred nest site ranges, and produce uneven sex ratios or lethal incubating temperatures. Juncus maritimus is the most abundant macrophyte in Laranjo bay, a Portuguese salt marsh heavily polluted by mercury (Hg). With the aim to elucidate the role of this species in the salt marsh Hg cycling and restoration, plants were harvested between March 2006 and January 2008 from four locations differing in Hg contamination. Metal uptake and distribution between plant organs were evaluated, biomass and Hg pools were also determined. Results showed that J. maritimus may influence the sediment pH and Eh, thus increasing the Hg available for uptake. Most (95-98%) of the absorbed Hg was retained belowground, phytostabilizing the metal and reducing the amount of Hg in the sediments. These results suggest that in salt marshes dominated by J. maritimus the approach could be phytostabilization, where these plants can be used to immobilize metals and store them belowground, reducing the pool of bioavailable Hg within contaminated marshes and acting as a sink rather than a source of contamination to the surrounding areas. 相似文献
