Anthropogenic impairment of water bodies represents a global environmental concern, yet few attempts have successfully linked fish performance to thermal habitat suitability and fewer have distinguished co-varying water quality constraints. We interfaced fish bioenergetics, field measurements, and Thermal Remote Imaging to generate a spatially-explicit, high-resolution surface of fish growth potential, and next employed a structured hypothesis to detect relationships among measures of fish performance and co-varying water quality constraints. Our thermal surface of fish performance captured the amount and spatial-temporal arrangement of thermally-suitable habitat for three focal species in an extremely heterogeneous reservoir, but interpretation of this pattern was initially confounded by seasonal covariation of water residence time and water quality. Subsequent path analysis revealed that in terms of seasonal patterns in growth potential, catfish and walleye responded to temperature, positively and negatively, respectively; crappie and walleye responded to eutrophy (negatively). At the high eutrophy levels observed in this system, some desired fishes appear to suffer from excessive cultural eutrophication within the context of elevated temperatures whereas others appear to be largely unaffected or even enhanced. Our overall findings do not lead to the conclusion that this system is degraded by pollution; however, they do highlight the need to use a sensitive focal species in the process of determining allowable nutrient loading and as integrators of habitat suitability across multiple spatial and temporal scales. We provide an integrated approach useful for quantifying fish growth potential and identifying water quality constraints on fish performance at spatial scales appropriate for whole-system management.  相似文献

This paper reviews literature on environmental conditions for safety work. By “environmental conditions for safety work”, we refer to conditions that influence the opportunities an organisation, organisational unit, group, or individual has to control the risk of major accidents and working environment risk. The purpose of the review was to document how international safety science literature uses “environmental conditions” or synonymous concepts, to help build a common conceptualisation of environmental conditions for safety work, and to link environmental conditions to safety work and risks. We did not find a uniform and systematic approach to environmental conditions for safety work in the literature. We therefore turned to a broader range of organisational research literature, where we found a diversity of complementary answers to our research question aimed at investigating the ways in which environmental conditions may constrain or facilitate safety work and thus influence risks. Due to the diversity of these theoretical resources, we have refrained from trying to reduce them to a single model. Our conceptualisation of environmental conditions includes definitions, the “sender–receiver” metaphor, and a selection of theoretical resources. The “sender–receiver” metaphor may be used as a starting point for exploring the ways in which some actors influence the environmental conditions of other actors, and how actors may resist, co-create or re-create the environmental conditions for their own safety work.  相似文献

The institutional structure and public service delivery apparatus required to meet the future effects of climate change already exist in Norway. However, there are huge challenges in coordinating these institutions at different authority levels for climate change adaptation purposes. Based upon a broad case study, this article presents how local actors consider the multi-level coordination of different levels of government and policy sectors to function today, which are the mechanisms that are used and what are the coordination challenges that are identified. Based upon the challenges revealed, this article discusses how best can the government-level institutions be organised for better goal attainment. We argue here that the elected regional level in Norway – the counties – has a huge potential to act as a multi-level coordination actor.  相似文献

The Don River Estuary-Azov Sea system is an extension of the shallow continental shelf area of the Black Sea. A large data set of artificial radionuclides in bottom sediments of the Azov Sea has been compiled in order to examine the storage and migration of radionuclides within this highly restricted inland sea and to estimate the annual dose received by individuals in the local population who regularly consume fish. In recent years (1997-1999), the radionuclide content of surface sediments has been: 137Cs < or = 0.5-100 Bq/kg d.w. (mean = 33.8 +/- 25.9 Bq/kg d.w., n = 57), 90Sr = 0.2-5.7 Bq/kg d.w. (mean = 2.1 +/- 1.4 Bq/kg d.w., n = 34) and 239,240Pu = 0.31-0.51 Bq/kg d.w. (n = 2). In general, 137Cs activities increase with distance from the mouth of the Don River and correlate negatively with sediment grain size (r2 = 0.77, n = 21). The annual 137Cs-derived dose received by an individual through the trophic chain water-fish-humans (approximately 10(-6) Sv/yr) is well below regulatory recommended limits, indicating that current levels of radioactivity in the environment pose no threat to commercial fisheries operations for the bordering nations of Russia and Ukraine.  相似文献

Abstract: Siltation and subsequent biological impairment is a national problem prompting state regulatory agencies to develop sediment total maximum daily loads (TMDL) for many streams. To support TMDL targets for reduced sediment yield in disturbed watersheds, a critical need exists for stream assessments to identify threshold concentrations of suspended sediment that impact aquatic biota. Because of the episodic nature of stream sediment transport, thresholds should not only be a function of sediment concentration, but also of duration and dose frequency. Water quality sondes can collect voluminous amounts of turbidity data, a surrogate for suspended sediment, at intervals that can be used to characterize concentration, duration, and frequency of elevated turbidity events. To characterize turbidity sonde data in an ecologically relevant manner, a methodology for concentration‐duration‐frequency (CDF) curves was developed using turbidity doses that relate to different levels of biological impairment. To illustrate this methodology, turbidity CDF curves were generated for two sites on Little Pigeon River in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee, using over 30,000 sonde data measurements per site for a one‐year period. Utilizing a Poisson arrival approach, turbidity spikes were analyzed stochastically by observing the frequency and duration of recorded events over a turbidity level that relates to a biological dose response. An exponential equation was used to fit duration and frequency of a specified turbidity level to generate concentric‐shaped CDF curves, where at specific turbidities longer durations occurred less frequently and conversely shorter durations occurred more frequently. The significance of the equation fit to the data was accomplished with a Kolmogorov‐Smirnov goodness‐of‐fit test. Our findings showed that the CDF curves derived by an exponential function performed reasonable well, with most curves significant at a 95% confidence level. These CDF curves were then used to demonstrate how they could be used to assess biological impairment, and identify future research needs for improved development of sediment TMDLs.  相似文献

The diversity of soft-bottom polychaete assemblages in one Antarctic (Admiralty Bay) and two Arctic (Kongsfjord and van Mijenfjord) localities was compared. The data sets included 79 (Admiralty Bay), 80 (Kongsfjord) and 44 (van Mijenfjord) samples collected with use of 0.1 m2 van Veen grab. The number of species per sample in Kongsfjord (mean 19.9 ± 8.0 SD) was higher than that in Van Mijenfjord (13.7 ± 8.3) or Admiralty Bay (15.7 ± 9.4). The differences in species numbers reflected differences in numbers of individuals in samples: 310.4 ind/0.1 m2 ± 178.0 in Kongsfjord, 132.7 ind/0.1 m2 ± 88.7 in Van Mijenfjord and 138.9 ind/0.1 m2 ± 91.5 in Admiralty Bay. The Hurlbert diversity for 50 individuals (ES [50]) was similar at all sites: 10.7 ± 3.4 in Kongsfjord, 9.7 ± 4.2 in van Mijenfjord, 10.5 ± 4.9 in Admiralty Bay. The shape of species accumulation curves was also similar for all localities. There was no significant difference (at P < 0.05) either in the total number of species or in species richness as estimated by Chao1 and Chao2 estimators. The generic and family richness at three sites was also similar. We found no substantial differences in the distribution of species among families. At both poles Terebellidae, Ampharetidae, Maldanidae, Spionidae and Polynoidae were dominant in terms of species numbers. The similarity of infaunal polychaete diversity at the polar sites studied contrasts with the substantial differences reported for epi-megafauna. Our study suggests that the patterns of diversity of polar benthic communities are shaped by patterns of habitat heterogeneity which appears to mask any historical processes.  相似文献
