This paper is concerned with the sustainable development of a self-drive tourist destination in the remote region in Northern
Australia. It first compares officially used data on visitor profiles to the information collected in the survey. Differences
between data collected and available secondary data imply that tourism planning should include collection of region-specific
tourism information to guide and mitigate potential environmental changes. Natural landscape features are the key attraction
for visitors to the region. Visitor satisfaction levels with the current state of the destination are high. However, local
residents reported perceived negative impacts of tourism, in particular on amenities and the ecology of the landscape. Visitors
also reported behavior that might contribute to environmental impacts. Implications of the findings, in the context of future

Morphometric and genetic methods were used to identify two sturgeon species, Acipenser naccarii Bonaparte, 1836, and A. sturio Linnaeus, 1758, captured in some of the principal rivers of the Iberian Peninsula, including the Guadalquivir. After measuring
25 Iberian specimens from a fishery and several Spanish and Portuguese museums and applying stepwise discriminant analysis
(SDA), four specimens preserved in different museums [two specimens from the Guadalquivir river (EBD-8173 and EBD-8174), one
specimen from the Tagus river (MUC1) and one specimen from the Mondego river (MUC46B)], as well as five specimens captured
in the Guadalquivir river in the 1940s but not preserved (CM1, CM2, CM3, CM4 and CM5), were identified as A. naccarii. After cloning and characterisation of a satellite-DNA family, HindIII, from A.␣naccarii genome, its absence from the genome of A.␣sturio was determined. Using this satellite-DNA as a genetic marker and by means of dot-blotting, we demonstrate that the DNA of
the two specimens captured during the mid-1970s in the Guadalquivir river cross-hybridised with HindIII satellite-DNA sequences of A.␣naccarii. We conclude that A. naccarii is autochthonous to the Iberian Peninsula and is not, as was previously believed, endemic to the Adriatic Sea.

In July 2012, a ship-board double-platform line-transect survey was conducted to assess harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) abundance in the Kattegat, Belt Seas and the Western Baltic. A total of 826 km of track lines were surveyed between the 2nd and 21st of July 2012, and 169 observations were made by the primary observers, comprising a total of 230 porpoises. Fifty-seven observations were identified as duplicate sightings observed by both tracker and primary observers and were used to correct for availability and perception bias of the primary detections. Using Mark–Recapture Distance Sampling analysis, we produced a model using the half-normal key function, including sightability as the only covariate to estimate the density and abundance of harbour porpoise within the 51,511 km2 survey area. Estimated detection probability on the transect line, known as g(0), was at 0.571 (±0.074; CV = 0.130). Using a point independence model of the detection function, the abundance of harbour porpoises within the survey area was estimated at 40,475 animals (95 % CI 25,614–65,041, CV = 0.235) with an associated density of 0.786 animals km?2 (95 % CI 0.498–1.242, CV = 0.235) and an average group size of 1.488 animals. These results reflect densities obtained during the SCANS surveys in 1994 and 2005, indicating no significant population trend in the area. However, it should be noted that the survey area covers more than one population and that results are therefore not necessarily reflecting local population trends. Until proper population borders are obtained, the abundance estimate provides baseline data for future monitoring and is an important input to the assessment of the conservation status of harbour porpoises in the area. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: The Cheat River of West Virginia is impaired by acid mine drainage (AMD). Fifty‐five of its river segments were placed on the 303(d) list, which required calculations of total maximum daily load (TMDL) to meet the water quality criteria for pH, total iron, aluminum, manganese, and zinc. An existing watershed model was enhanced to simulate AMD as nonpoint source load. The model divided a watershed into a network of catchments and river segments. Each catchment was divided into soil layers, which could contain pyrite, calcite and other minerals. A kinetic expression was used to simulate pyrite oxidation as a function of oxygen in the soil voids. Oxygen in the soil voids was consumed by pyrite oxidation and replenished by earth breathing. The by‐products of pyrite oxidation were calculated according to its mass action equations. Chemical equilibrium was used to account for the speciation of ferrous and ferric irons and precipitation of metal hydroxides. Simulated hydrology and water quality were compared to available data. The USEPA used the calibrated model to calculate the TMDLs in the Cheat River Watershed. 相似文献
