Community-based approaches are pursued in recognition of the need for place-based responses to environmental change that integrate local understandings of risk and vulnerability. Yet the potential for fair adaptation is intimately linked to how variations in perceptions of environmental change and risk are treated. There is, however, little empirical evidence of the extent and nature of variations in risk perception in and between multiple community settings. Here, we rely on data from 231 semi-structured interviews conducted in nine communities in Western Province, Solomon Islands, to statistically model different perceptions of risk and change within and between communities. Overall, people were found to be less likely to perceive environmental changes in the marine environment than they were for terrestrial systems. The distance to the nearest market town (which may be a proxy for exposure to commercial logging and degree of involvement with the market economy), and gender had the greatest overall statistical effects on perceptions of risk. Yet, we also find that significant environmental change is underreported in communities, while variations in perception are not always easily related to commonly assumed fault lines of vulnerability. The findings suggest that there is an urgent need for methods that engage with the drivers of perceptions as part of community-based approaches. In particular, it is important to explicitly account for place, complexity and diversity of environmental risk perceptions, and we reinforce calls to engage seriously with underlying questions of power, culture, identity and practice that influence adaptive capacity and risk perception.

ABSTRACT

An intercomparison study has been performed with six empirical ozone interpolation procedures to predict hourly concentrations in ambient air between monitoring stations. The objective of the study is to use monitoring network data to empirically identify an improved procedure to estimate ozone concentrations at subject exposure points. Four of the procedures in the study are currently used in human exposure models (nearest monitors daily mean and maximum, regression estimate used in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) pNEM, and inverse distance weighting), and two are being evaluated for this purpose (kriging in space and kriging in space and time). The study focused on spatial estimation during June 1-June 5, 1996, with relatively high observed ozone levels over Houston, Texas. The study evaluated these procedures at three types of locations with monitors of varying proximity. Results from the empirical evaluation indicate that kriging in space and time provides excellent estimates of ozone concentrations within a monitoring network, while the more often used techniques failed to capture observed pollutant concentrations. Improved estimation of pollutant concentrations within the region, and thus at subject locations, should result in improved exposure modeling.  相似文献

Exposures from indoor environments are a major issue for evaluating total long-term personal exposures to the fine fraction (<2.5 microm in aerodynamic diameter) of particulate matter (PM). It is widely accepted in the indoor air quality (IAQ) research community that biocontamination is one of the important indoor air pollutants. Major indoor air biocontaminants include mold, bacteria, dust mites, and other antigens. Once the biocontaminants or their metabolites become airborne, IAQ could be significantly deteriorated. The airborne biocontaminants or their metabolites can induce irritational, allergic, infectious, and chemical responses in exposed individuals. Biocontaminants, such as some mold spores or pollen grains, because of their size and mass, settle rapidly within the indoor environment. Over time they may become nonviable and fragmented by the process of desiccation. Desiccated nonviable fragments of organisms are common and can be toxic or allergenic, depending upon the specific organism or organism component. Once these smaller and lighter fragments of biological PM become suspended in air, they have a greater tendency to stay suspended. Although some bioaerosols have been identified, few have been quantitatively studied for their prevalence within the total indoor PM with time, or for their affinity to penetrate indoors. This paper describes a preliminary research effort to develop a methodology for the measurement of nonviable biologically based PM, analyzing for mold and ragweed antigens and endotoxins. The research objectives include the development of a set of analytical methods and the comparison of impactor media and sample size, and the quantification of the relationship between outdoor and indoor levels of bioaerosols. Indoor and outdoor air samples were passed through an Andersen nonviable cascade impactor in which particles from 0.2 to 9.0 microm were collected and analyzed. The presence of mold, ragweed, and endotoxin was found in all eight size ranges. The presence of respirable particles of mold and pollen found in the fine particle size range from 0.2 to 5.25 microm is evidence of fragmentation of larger source particles that are known allergens.  相似文献

The Ceilcote ionizing wet scrubber installed on a refractory brick kiln was evaluated with tests involving particulate mass emission, particle size distribution, and opacity. The overall efficiency was 93% with an average outlet opacity of 8% on a 1.68 m (5.5 ft) path length. The average particle cut diameter of the scrubber is 0.5 microns with a theoretical power input of 67 W/am3 (2.5 hp/1000 acfm). The theoretical power requirement for the ionizing wet scrubber was 41 W/am3 (1.54 hp/1000 acfm). A cooling tower supplying chilled water to the prescrubber required an additional 26 W/am2 (0.96 hp/1000 acfm) for a total system input of 67 W/am3 (2.5 hp/1000 acfm). It is recommended that the scrubber be considered where practical for the removal of fine particulate matter.  相似文献

Calculation of smoke plume opacity from the properties of the particulate emission is facilitated with the use of a parameter K (specific particulate volume cm3/m3/extinction coefficient m?1) computed from theory. Graphs of K vs. the geometric mass mean particle radius at geometric standard deviations from 1 (monodisperse) to 10 are presented for particle refractive indices of 1.96–0.66i (carbon), 2.80–0.02i, 1.33 (water) and 1.50 at a wavelength of light of 550 nm. Experimental data of K for various sources are reported. Application to the estimation of the Ringelmann number is discussed and illustrated with an example.  相似文献

The opacity of "detached plumes" formed by condensation of vapors depends upon both the concentration of condensible vapors and the in-stack concentration of fine, submicron, particulate matter. This paper provides an analysis of the condensing aerosol problem and an evaluation of possible control approaches to reduce the downwind detached plume opacity. The opacity of such plumes may be reduced by reducing the concentration of condensible vapors or the in-stack concentration of fine particles or both. The results of the analysis indicate that for low concentrations of condensible vapors the detached plume opacity may be adequately controlled by reducing the in-stack fine particulate concentration alone. For high concentrations of condensible vapors, however, reduction of in-stack fine particulate concentration alone may not be effective, and reduction of vapor concentration may be necessary along with particulate removal for adequate reduction of plume opacity. Different combinations of levels of reduction of vapor concentration and particulate phase concentration are possible to achieve a desired result; and thus may be optimized to obtain a cost-effective combination.  相似文献

Traditional regulatory methods for evaluating air toxics have several limitations. Two common methods rely either on self-reported industrial emissions from the Toxics Release Inventory or a single summary statistic such as the average or arithmetic mean. A novel statistical approach for detecting overall long term improvement in ambient air quality is demonstrated using measurements of the air toxic benzene evaluated over five years in Houston, Texas. Through trends of seven key statistical measures, long term improvements were detected at more monitors than would have been found using traditional methods while lack of improvement is highlighted at other monitors. This new approach includes analysis of high and low end concentrations, as well as central tendency, evaluated at specific air toxic human health risk thresholds.  相似文献

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is currently supporting a major research program characterizing the performance of high efficiency electrostatic precipitators (ESP). One such effort evaluating the George Neal ESP of Iowa Public Service Company is described in this paper.Results show that under well tuned conditions the ESP overall collection efficiency was 99.7% at a specific collecting area of 745 ft2/kacfm (147 m2/m3/s) (520 MW) with associated mass concentrations of 0.025 lb/106 Btu and stack opacity of 4.6%. The boiler outlet size distribution was found to be bimodal with submicron and large particle peaks at 0.2 and 5 microns diameter, respectively. Consequently, an apparent bimodal fractional efficiency curve results with efficiencies of 99.6%, 98%, and 90% measured for 20, 2 and 0.2 micron diameter particles, respectively. Rapping reentrainment losses were found to be insignificant except during episodes of high ash hopper levels resulting from a malfunctioning ash removal system, when large rapping puffs were observed. In addition, outlet emissions increased dramatically to 0.08 lb/106 Btu (34 ng/J) during these periods, suggesting that an emission level more representative of daily operation lies somewhere between 0.025–0.08 lb/106 Btu (10.8–34 ng/J).  相似文献
