Ultraviolet/persulfate (UV/PS) and Ultraviolet/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2) have attracted much attention in recent years as advanced oxidation processes for water treatment. However, it is not all clear how these two methods affect the formation of cyanogen chloride (CNCl) in the subsequent water chlorination process. In this study, it was found that both UV/H2O2 and UV/PS pre-oxidation promoted the formation of CNCl in six actual water samples collected from urban rivers. Glycine, uric acid, arginine and histidine were investigated as the model compounds to explore the effects of different methods on the production of CNCl. The results showed that compared with chlorination alone, pre-oxidation by UV/H2O2 and UV/PS can reduce the production of CNCl for glycine and uric acid by up to 95% during post-chlorination process. However, they can greatly promote the formation of CNCl for arginine and histidine by up to 120-fold. In a more detailed investigation, pre-oxidation of histidine formed highly reactive intermediates to chlorine, leading to increased CNCl formation and chlorine consumption. The results showed that the precursors of CNCl was altered after pre-oxidation, and need to be re-evaluated. 相似文献

Reaction thermal runaway is one of the most important reasons leading to chemical accidents. With the rapid development of the chemical industry in the world, especially the fine chemical industry, various safety accidents also occur frequently. Therefore, it is necessary to study the exothermic behavior of the reaction process. In this study, reaction calorimeter was used to study the exothermic phenomena during the chlorination reaction and amination reaction. Differential scanning calorimetry was performed on the reactants, and thermogravimetric experiments were performed on the products. In addition, adiabatic experiment was performed to study the thermal runaway behavior of amination products under adiabatic conditions. The results showed that the target reactions generated a large amount of heat in the initial stage. The maximum temperature of amination reaction is higher than the initial decomposition temperature of the amination product under adiabatic condition. The pyrolysis of amination product was divided into three stages. The product had a high apparent activation energy at the beginning of decomposition, and the apparent activation energy decreased as the decomposition progressed. 相似文献

Recycling wastewater is becoming more common as communities around the world try to better control their water resources against an increased frequency of either prolonged droughts or intense flooding. For communities in coastal areas, wastewaters may contain elevated levels of bromide(Br~-) and iodide(I~-) from seawater intrusion or high mineral content of source waters. Disinfection of such wastewater is mandatory to prevent the spread of pathogens, however little is known about the toxicity of wastewater after disinfection in the presence of Br~-and I~-. In this study we compared the induction of chronic cytotoxicity in mammalian cells in samples of municipal secondary wastewater effluent amended with elevated levels of Br~-/I~-after disinfection by chlorine, chloramines or ozone to identify which disinfection process generated wastewater with the lowest level of adverse biological response. Chlorination increased mammalian cell cytotoxicity by 5times as compared to non-disinfected controls. Chloramination produced disinfected wastewater that expressed 6.3 times more cytotoxicity than the non-disinfected controls and was 1.3 times more cytotoxic than the chlorinated samples. Ozonation produced wastewater with cytotoxicity comparable to the non-disinfected controls and was at least 4times less cytotoxic than the chlorine disinfected wastewaters. These results indicate that compared to chlorination and chloramination, ozonation of wastewater with high Br~-/Ilevels yielded the lowest mammalian cell cytotoxicity, suggesting its potential as a more favorable method to disinfect wastewater with minimizing the biological toxicity in mind. 相似文献

The brominated products, formed in chlorination treatment of benzophenone-4 in the presence of bromide ions, were identified, and the formation pathways were proposed.Under disinfection conditions, benzophenone-4 would undertake electrophilic substitution generating mono- or di-halogenated products, which would be oxidized to esters and further hydrolyzed to phenol derivatives. The generated catechol intermediate would be transformed into furan-like heterocyclic product. The product species were p H-dependent,while benzophenone-4 elimination was chlorine dose-dependent. When the chlorination treatment was performed on ambient water spiked with benzophenone-4 and bromide ions, most of brominated byproducts could be detected, and the acute toxicity significantly increased as well. 相似文献

Background, aim and scope The use of sodium hypochlorite (HYP) in viticulture results in effluents which are contaminated with halogenated substances.
These disinfection by-products (DBPs) can be quantified as group parameter ‘adsorbable organic halogens’ (AOX) and have not
been determined in effluents of viticulture yet. The substances that are detected as AOX are unknown. The AOX can be composed
of harmless substances, but even toxic contaminants. Thus, it is impossible to assess ecological impacts. The aim of this
study is to determine the quantification of AOX and DBPs after the use of HYP. This will be helpful to reduce environmental
pollution by AOX.
Materials and methods The potential of HYP to generate AOX was determined in laboratory-scale experiments. Different model solutions were treated
with HYP according to disinfection processes in viticulture and conditions of AOX formation in effluents were simulated. AOX
were quantified using the flask-shaking method and identified DBPs were investigated by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry.
Results Treatment with HYP resulted in the formation of AOX. The percentage conversion of HYP to AOX was up to 11%. Most important
identified DBPs in viticulture are chloroform, dichloroacetic acid and trichloroacetaldehyde. In addition, the formation of
carbon tetrachloride (CT), 1,1,1-trichloropropanone, 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid and 2-chloro-/2,4-dichlorophenylacetic acid
was investigated. It was demonstrated that reaction temperature, concentration of HYP and type of organic matter have important
influence on the formation of chlorinated DBPs.
Discussion The percentage conversion of HYP to AOX was similar to other published studies. Although a correlation of single compounds
and AOX is difficult, chloroform was the predominant AOX. Generation of the volatile chloroform should be avoided due to possible
adverse effects. The generation of dichloroacetic acid is of minor importance on account of biodegradation. Trichloroacetaldehyde
and 1,1,1-trichloropropanone are weak mutagens and their formation should be avoided.
Conclusions The generation of AOX and chlorinated DBPs can be minimised by reducing the concentrations of the organic materials in the
effluents. The removal of organic matter before disinfection results in a decreased formation of AOX. HYP is an effective
disinfectant; therefore, it should be used at low temperatures and concentrations to reduce the amount of AOX. If possible,
disinfection should be accomplished by the use of no chlorine-containing agents. By this means, negative influences of HYP
on the quality of wine can also be avoided.
Recommendations and perspectives Our results indicate that HYP has a high potential to form AOX in effluents of viticulture. The predominant by-products are
chloroform, dichloroacetic acid and trichloroacetaldehyde. In further research, wastewaters from a winery and the in- and
outflows of two sewage treatment plants were sampled during vintage and analysed. These results will be discussed in a following
paper. 相似文献

Exposure to inhaled THM: Comparison of continuous and event-specific exposure assessment for epidemiologic purposes 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Trihalomethanes (THMs) (chloroform, bromoform, dibromochloromethane, and bromodichloromethane) are the most abundant by-products of chlorination. People are exposed to THMs through ingestion, dermal contact and inhalation. The objective of this study was to compare two methods for assessing THM inhalation: a direct method with personal monitors assessing continuous exposure and an indirect one with microenvironmental sampling and collection of time–activity data during the main event exposures: bathing, showering and swimming. This comparison was conducted to help plan a future epidemiologic study of the effects of THMs on the upper airways of children. 30 children aged from 4 to 10 years were included. They wore a 3M™ 3520 organic vapor monitor for 7 days. We sampled air in their bathrooms (during baths or showers) and in the indoor swimming pools they visited and recorded their time–activity patterns. We used stainless steel tubes full of Tenax® to collect air samples. All analyses were performed with Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Chloroform was the THM with the highest concentrations in the air of both bathrooms and indoor swimming pools. Its continuous and event exposure measurements were significantly correlated (rs = 0.69 p < 0.001). Continuous exposures were higher than event exposures, suggesting that the event exposure method does not take into account some influential microenvironments. In an epidemiologic study, this might lead to random exposure misclassification, thus underestimation of the risk, and reduced statistical power. The continuous exposure method was difficult to implement because of its poor acceptability and the fragility of the personal monitors. These two points may also reduce the statistical power of an epidemiologic study. It would be useful to test the advantages and disadvantages of a second sample in the home or of modeling the baseline concentration of THM in the home to improve the event exposure method. 相似文献

Chlortoluron chlorination is studied in the pH range of 3-10 at 25 ± 1 °C. The chlorination kinetics can be well described by a second-order kinetics model, first-order in chlorine and first-order in chlortoluron. The apparent rate constants were determined and found to be minimum at pH 6, maximum at pH 3 and medium at alkaline conditions. The rate constant of each predominant elementary reactions (i.e., the acid-catalyzed reaction of chlortoluron with HOCl, the reaction of chlortoluron with HOCl and the reaction of chlortoluron with OCl−) was calculated as 3.12 (± 0.10) × 107 M−2 h−1, 3.11 (±0.39) × 102 M−1 h−1 and 3.06 (±0.47) × 103 M−1 h−1, respectively. The main chlortoluron chlorination by-products were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) with purge-and-trap pretreatment, ultra-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-MS and GC-electron capture detector. Six volatile disinfection by-products were identified including chloroform (CF), dichloroacetonitrile, 1,1-dichloropropanone, 1,1,1-trichloropropanone, dichloronitromethane and trichloronitromethane. Degradation pathways of chlortoluron chlorination were then proposed. High concentrations of CF were generated during chlortoluron chlorination, with maximum CF yield at circumneutral pH range in solution. 相似文献

Wet weather impact on trihalomethane formation potential in tributaries to drinking water reservoirs
During rain storm events, land surface runoff and resuspension of bottom sediments cause an increase in Trihalomethane (THM)
precursors in rivers. These precursors, when chlorinated at water treatment facilities will lead to the formation of THMs
and hence impact drinking water resources. In order to evaluate the wet weather impact on the potential formation of THMs,
river samples were collected before, during and after three rain storms ranging from 15.2 to 24.9 mm precipitation. The samples
were tested for THM formation potential and other indicators including UV254 absorbance, turbidity and volatile suspended
solid (VSS). Average levels of THMs increased from 61 μg/l during dry weather to 131 μg/l during wet weather, and then went
back to 81 μg/l after rain ended. Wet weather values of THM are well above the maximum contaminant level (MCL) 80 μg/l, set
by EPA for drinking water. THM indicators also exhibited similar trends. Average levels increased from 0.6 to 1.8 abs; 2.6
to 6 ntu; and 7.5 to 15 mg/l respectively for UV254, turbidity and VSS. A positive correlation was observed between THM formation
and THM indicators. The t-test of significance (p-value) was less than 0.05 for all indicators, and R values ranged from 0.85 to 0.92 between THMs and the indicators, and 0.72 to 0.9 among indicators themselves. 相似文献
