Removal of arsenic from groundwater by granular titanium dioxide adsorbent   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Bang S  Patel M  Lippincott L  Meng X 《Chemosphere》2005,60(3):389-397
A novel granular titanium dioxide (TiO2) was evaluated for the removal of arsenic from groundwater. Laboratory experiments were carried out to investigate the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent and the effect of anions on arsenic removal. Batch experimental results showed that more arsenate [As(V)] was adsorbed on TiO2 than arsenite [As(III)] in US groundwater at pH 7.0. The adsorption capacities for As(V) and As(III) were 41.4 and 32.4 mgg(-1) TiO2, respectively. However, the adsorbent had a similar adsorption capacity for As(V) and As(III) (approximately 40 mgg(-1)) when simulated Bangladesh groundwater was used. Silica (20 mgl(-1)) and phosphate (5.8 mgl(-1)) had no obvious effect on the removal of As(V) and As(III) by TiO2 at neutral pH. Point-of-entry (POE) filters containing 3 l of the granular adsorbent were tested for the removal of arsenic from groundwater in central New Jersey, USA. Groundwater was continuously passed through the filters at an empty bed contact time (EBCT) of 3 min. Approximately 45,000 bed volumes of groundwater containing an average of 39 microgl(-1) of As(V) was treated by the POE filter before the effluent arsenic concentration increased to 10 microgl(-1). The total treated water volumes per weight of adsorbent were about 60,000 l per 1 kg of adsorbent. The field filtration results demonstrated that the granular TiO2 adsorbent was very effective for the removal of arsenic in groundwater.  相似文献

Electrochemical peroxidation (ECP), an emerging remediation technology, with direct electric current applied to steel electrode and small addition of H2O2, was used to remove As(III) from contaminated aqueous solutions. Bench scale experiments were conducted to evaluate the sorption and distribution of arsenic between the soluble and solid state hydrous ferric oxides (HFO) formed as part of the ECP process. ECP was effective in removing arsenic from the aqueous solution, with >98% of the applied As(III) adsorbed on HFO. Removal was complete within 3 min of ECP treatment and apparently independent of the initial pH of the water (3.5-9.5). In the absence of H2O2 more As(III) was adsorbed by solid state iron at pH 9.5 than at 3.5 (2600 vs. 1750 microg l(-1)). Thus H2O2 was crucial to oxidize As(III) to As(V) which is more strongly retained by HFO. Removal of As was not significantly affected by the concentration of H2O2 or by current processing time. The optimal operating conditions were pH < 6.5, H2O2 concentration of 10 mg l(-1) and current process time not exceeding 3 min. X-ray diffraction (XRD), diffuse-reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were applied to study the HFO deposits. The XRD data indicated the prevalence of poorly ordered Fe minerals in the suspended ECP solids with a dominance of 5 line ferrihydrite in the absence of H2O2. At pH 3.5 and with 100 mg H2O2 l(-1), akaganeite was formed, whereas an incipient hematitic phase, reflection at 0.39 nm, occurred at pH 6.5. DRIFT data indicate that both As(III) and As(V) were specifically adsorbed onto HFO at acid and neutral pH. TEM observations indicated the presence of spherical shape ferrihydrite and provided evidence for possible formation of subrounded hematite and acicular shape goethite.  相似文献

Arsenic concentrations and solid-phase speciation were assessed as a function of depth through Fe-media beds for two commercially available products (Granular Ferric Hydroxide-GFH and Bayoxide E33-E33) from pilot-scale water treatment field tests. These results were compared with data from solution (de-ionized water-DI-H2O) concentrations of As equilibrated with Fe-media in an anoxic environment at 4 degrees C. The materials had a high capacity for As (GFH media 9620 mg kg(-1) As, E33 Media 5246 mg kg(-1)). Arsenic concentrations decreased with bed depth. For E33, X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy results showed that As(V) was the dominant solid-phase species. For GFH, As(III) was detected and the proportion (relative to As(V)) of As(III) increased with bed depth. Arsenic concentrations in DI-H2O equilibrated with the media were low (35 microg l(-1)) over a period of 50 d. Arsenic concentrations in the equilibrated solutions also decreased with depth. Results from tests on soluble As speciation show that As in solution is in the form of As(V). Kinetic desorption experiments carried out at different pH values (3, 5, 7, 8, and 9) show that the media exhibit some acid/base neutralization capacity and tend to bind As sufficiently. Concentrations of As in the pH desorption experiments were in the same order of magnitude as the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure extractions (tens of microgl(-1)) except at low pH values. For the GFH media tested at a pH of three, As increases in solution and is mainly associated with colloidal (operationally defined as between 0.1 and 1.0 microm) iron.  相似文献

The purpose of this research was to develop a sensitive and accurate chronopotentiometric method at a gold film electrode, to determine trace and ultra trace levels of As(III) and As(V) in alimentary and environmental water systems. As(III) was directly determined in the aqueous matrix at a deposition potential of -300 mV for 180 s and at a constant anodic current of 2.5 microA, without any sample pre-treatment; moreover the chronopotentiometric method did not require a time-consuming de-oxygenation step prior to the analysis. A 3M HCl solution was chosen as the best stripping medium. The direct analysis of As(V) required the application of a high negative over-potential and, thus, measurements were characterized by poor reproducibility; therefore As(V) was determined after reduction to As(III) with KI in a strong hydrochloric acid solution. Under the optimised electrochemical conditions, detection limits of 0.08 microg As(III) l(-1) were achieved and no significant interferences from Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn and organic substances were observed. As(V) was the most abundant species in all the studied environmental and alimentary aqueous matrices. Amongst the beverages, tea and coffee presented the As(V) highest concentration ranges (934-1740 microg l(-1) and 850-1290 microg l(-1), respectively) while bottled mineral water the lowest (<1.61 microg l(-1)); whereas As(III) levels lower than 5.0 microg l(-1) were detected only in wine samples.  相似文献

Twenty four hours diel cycles of arsenic speciation in Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) due to photooxidation have been reported for the first time. AMD samples were taken during 48 h (31st March and 1st April, 2005) at 6 h intervals from the effluent of a massive abandoned polymetallic sulphide mine of the Iberian Pyrite Belt (Sw Spain). Samples were preserved in situ using cationic exchange prior to analysis by coupled high performance liquid chromatography, hydride generation and atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HPLC-HG-AFS) for arsenic speciation. The results indicated the presence of inorganic arsenic species with daily means of 262mugl(-1) for As(V) and 107 microg l(-1) for As(III). No marked diel trend was observed for As(V). However, a marked diel trend was observed for As(III) in the two studied days, with maximum concentrations during nighttime (141-143 microg l(-1)) and minimum concentrations at daytime (72-77 microg l(-1)). This difference in concentration during daytime and nighttime is ca. 100%. A similar diel cycle was observed for iron. An explanation for the arsenic diel cycles observed is the light induced photooxidation of As(III) and the elimination of As(V) due to its adsorption onto Fe precipitates during the daytime. Furthermore, the diel changes in arsenic speciation emphasize the importance of designing suitable sampling strategies in AMD systems.  相似文献

As the production of nanoparticles of ZnO, TiO2 and CuO is increasing, their (eco)toxicity to bacteria Vibrio fischeri and crustaceans Daphnia magna and Thamnocephalus platyurus was studied with a special emphasis on product formulations (nano or bulk oxides) and solubilization of particles. Our innovative approach based on the combination of traditional ecotoxicology methods and metal-specific recombinant biosensors allowed to clearly differentiate the toxic effects of metal oxides per se and solubilized metal ions. Suspensions of nano and bulk TiO2 were not toxic even at 20 g l(-1). All Zn formulations were very toxic: L(E)C50 (mg l(-1)) for bulk ZnO, nanoZnO and ZnSO4.7H2O: 1.8, 1.9, 1.1 (V. fischeri); 8.8, 3.2, 6.1 (D. magna) and 0.24, 0.18, 0.98 (T. platyurus), respectively. The toxicity was due to solubilized Zn ions as proved with recombinant Zn-sensor bacteria. Differently from Zn compounds, Cu compounds had different toxicities: L(E)C50 (mg l(-1)) for bulk CuO, nano CuO and CuSO4: 3811, 79, 1.6 (V. fischeri), 165, 3.2, 0,17 (D. magna) and 95, 2.1, 0.11 (T. platyurus), respectively. Cu-sensor bacteria showed that toxicity to V. fischeri and T. platyurus was largely explained by soluble Cu ions. However, for Daphnia magna, nano and bulk CuO proved less bioavailable than for bacterial Cu-sensor. This is the first evaluation of ZnO, CuO and TiO2 toxicity to V. fischeri and T. platyurus. For nano ZnO and nano CuO this is also a first study for D. magna.  相似文献

A coupled solar photo-Fenton (chemical) and biological treatment has been used to remove biorecalcitrant diuron (42 mg l(-1)) and linuron (75 mg l(-1)) herbicides from water at pilot plant scale. The chemical process has been carried out in a 82 l solar pilot plant made up by four compound parabolic collector units, and it was followed by a biological treatment performed in a 40 l sequencing batch reactor. Two Fe(II) doses (2 and 5 mg l(-1)) and sequential additions of H2O2 (20 mg l(-1)) have been used to chemically degrade the initially polluted effluent. Next, biodegradability at different oxidation states has been assessed by means of BOD/COD ratio. A reagent dose of Fe=5 mg l(-1) and H2O2=100 mg l(-1) has been required to obtain a biodegradable effluent after 100 min of irradiation time. Finally, the organic content of the photo-treated solution has been completely assimilated by a biomass consortium in the sequencing batch reactor using a total suspended solids concentration of 0.2 g l(-1) and a hydraulic retention time of 24h. Comparison between the data obtained at pilot plant scale (specially the one corresponding to the chemical step) and previously published data from a similar system performing at laboratory scale, has been carried out.  相似文献

Arsenic oxidation (As(III) to As(V)) and As(V) removal from water were assessed by using TiO2 immobilized in PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles in the presence of natural sunlight and iron salts. The effect of many parameters was sequentially studied: TiO2 concentration of the coating solution, Fe(II) concentration, pH, solar irradiation time; dissolved organic carbon concentration. The final conditions (TiO2 concentration of the coating solution: 10%; Fe(II): 7.0 mg l−1; solar exposure time: 120 min) were applied to natural water samples spiked with 500 μg l−1 As(III) in order to verify the influence of natural water matrix. After treatment, As(III) and total As concentrations were lower than the limit of quantitation (2 μg l−1) of the voltammetric method used, showing a removal over 99%, and giving evidence that As(III) was effectively oxidized to As(V). The results obtained demonstrated that TiO2 can be easily immobilized on a PET surface in order to perform As(III) oxidation in water and that this TiO2 immobilization, combined with coprecipitation of arsenic on Fe(III) hydroxides(oxides) could be an efficient way for inorganic arsenic removal from groundwaters.  相似文献

New large solar photocatalytic plant: set-up and preliminary results   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
A European industrial consortium called SOLARDETOX has been created as the result of an EC-DGXII BRITE-EURAM-III-financed project on solar photocatalytic detoxification of water. The project objective was to develop a simple, efficient and commercially competitive water-treatment technology, based on compound parabolic collectors (CPCs) solar collectors and TiO2 photocatalysis, to make possible easy design and installation. The design, set-up and preliminary results of the main project deliverable, the first European industrial solar detoxification treatment plant, is presented. This plant has been designed for the batch treatment of 2 m3 of water with a 100 m2 collector-aperture area and aqueous aerated suspensions of polycrystalline TiO2 irradiated by sunlight. Fully automatic control reduces operation and maintenance manpower. Plant behaviour has been compared (using dichloroacetic acid and cyanide at 50 mg l(-1) initial concentration as model compounds) with the small CPC pilot plants installed at the Plataforma Solar de Almería several years ago. The first results with high-content cyanide (1 g l(-1)) waste water are presented and plant treatment capacity is calculated.  相似文献

A simple HG-AAS technique has been evaluated and standardised for rapid speciation of As(III) and As(V) in a number of contaminated groundwater samples of West Bengal, India. Citric acid has been used for selective hydride formation of As(III). The sensitivity of the evaluated HG-AAS method is 7.91 mg(-1)l, standard deviation, 0.001 and detection limit, 0.4 microg l(-1). As(III) sensitivity remains constant in the sample pH range of 2.3-10.6. Concomitant mineral matrix of the water samples did not interfere with arsenic determination. Eight out of ten groundwater samples analysed for As(IlI)and As(V) contain more As(III), which lies in the range of 54-350 ppb. As(III) estimation in drinking water along with total arsenic should be invoked as a policy for a realistic risk assessment of the contaminated water.  相似文献

Titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) photocatalysts have attracted great attention as a material for photocatalytic sterilization in the food and environmental industry. This research aimed to design a new photobioreactor and its application to sterilize selected food borne pathogenic bacteria, Salmonella choleraesuis subsp., Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and Listeria monocytogenes. The photocatalytic reaction was carried out with various TiO(2) concentrations and Ultraviolet (UV) illumination time. A feasible synergistic effect was found that the bactericidal effect of TiO(2) on all bacterial suspension after UV light irradiation was much higher than that of without TiO(2). As the concentration of TiO(2) increased to 1.0 mg/ml, bactericidal effect increased. However, the bactericidal effect was rapidly abbreviated at TiO(2) concentration higher than 1.25 mg/ml to all selected bacteria. UV illumination time affected drastically the viability of all bacteria with different death rate. Similar trends were obtained from S. choleraesuis subsp. and V. parahaemolyticus that their complete killing was achieved after 3 h of illumination. However, L. monocytogenes was more resistant and its death ratio was about 87% at that time.  相似文献

Solar photocatalytic decolorization of methylene blue in water   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Kuo WS  Ho PH 《Chemosphere》2001,45(1):77-83
In this study, a photocatalytic decolorization system equipped with immobilized TiO2 and illuminated by solar light was used to remove the color of wastewater. To examine the decoloring efficiency of this system, photocatalytic decolorization of an organic dye such as methylene blue was studied as an example. The effects of light source, pH, as well as the initial concentration of dye were also investigated. It was observed that the solution of methylene blue could be almost completely decolorized by the solar light/TiO2 film process while there was about 50% color remaining with solar irradiation only. In addition, it was found that the decoloring efficiency of solution was higher with solar light irradiation than with artificial UV light irradiation, even though the artificial UV light source supplied higher UV intensity at 254 nm. The color removal rate of methylene blue with solar light irradiation was almost twice that of artificial UV light irradiation. This phenomena was mainly attributed to that some visible light range of solar light was useful for exciting the methylene blue molecules adsorbed on TiO2 film, leading to a photosensitization process undergoing and decoloring efficiency promoted. This solar-assisted photocatalytic device showed potential application for decoloring organic dyes in wastewater.  相似文献

The uptake and metabolism of arsenate, As(V), as a function of time and concentration were examined in the lichen Hypogymnia physodes (L.) Nyl. Lichen thalli were exposed to As(V) in the form of a solution. Exponential uptake of As(V) from 4 microg mL(-1) As(V) solution was accompanied by constant arsenite, As(III), excretion back into the solution. Arsenate taken up into the lichens from 0, 0.1, 1, 10 microg mL(-1) As(V) solutions was partially transformed into As(III), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) and (mono)methylarsonic acid (MA). 48 h after exposure, the main arsenic compound in the lichens was DMA in 0.1, As(III) in 1 and As(V) in 10 microg mL(-1) treatment. The proportion of methylated arsenic compounds decreased with increasing arsenate concentration in the exposure solution. These results suggest that at least two types of As(V) detoxification exist in lichens; arsenite excretion and methylation.  相似文献

An adsorption process for the removal of As(V) and As(III) was evaluated under various conditions using zirconium(IV) loaded chelating resin (Zr-LDA) with lysine-Nalpha,Nalpha diacetic acid functional groups. Arsenate ions strongly adsorbed in the pH range from 2 to 5, while arsenite was adsorbed between pH 7 and 10.5. The sorption mechanism is an additional complexation between arsenate or arsenite and Zr complex of LDA. Adsorption isotherm data could be well interpreted by Langmuir equation for As(V) at pH 4 and As(III) at pH 9 with a binding constant 227.93 and 270.47 dm3 mol(-1) and capacity constant 0.656 and 1.1843 mmol g(-1), respectively. Regeneration of the resin was carried out for As(V) using 1 M NaOH. Six adsorption/desorption cycles were performed without significant decrease in the uptake performance. Column adsorption studies showed that the adsorption of As(V) is more favorable compared to As(III), due to the faster kinetics of As(V) compared to As(III). Influence of the coexisting ions on the adsorption of As(V) and As(III) was studied. The applicability of the method for practical water samples was studied.  相似文献

The removal efficiencies of Cr(VI) and HA, using a TiO(2)-mediated photocatalytic process, were investigated with variations in the pH, TiO(2) dosage and Cr(VI)/HA ratio. During the photocatalytic reaction, the total removal of Cr(VI) occurred through adsorption onto TiO(2), as well as its reduction to Cr(III). However, oxidation and adsorption were identified as important removal processes for the treatment of HA. Due to the anionic type adsorption onto TiO(2) and its acid-catalyzed photocatalytic reduction, the removal of Cr(VI) decreased with increasing pH, while that of HA increased with increasing pH. The TiO(2) dosage was also an important parameter for the removal of Cr(VI). As the TiO(2) dosage was increased to 2.5 g l(-1), the removal of Cr(VI) was continuously enhanced, but decreased at dosages above 3 g l(-1) due to the increased blockage of the incident UV light used for the photocatalytic reaction. The removal of Cr(VI) was greatly enhanced when the system contained both HA and Cr(VI) compared to Cr(VI) alone. Also, the removal of HA was greatly enhanced when the system contained both HA and Cr(VI) compared to HA alone. The removal of Cr(VI) was continuously enhanced as the HA concentration gradually increased; however, no further increase was observed above 20 mg l(-1) HA due to the increased absorption of the UV light. This result supports that the photocatalytic reaction, with illuminated TiO(2), could be applied to more effectively treat wastewater containing both Cr(VI) and HA than that containing a single species only.  相似文献

The decoloration and mineralization of the azo dye orange II under conditions of artificial ultraviolet light and solar energy concentrated by a Fresnel lens in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and TiO(2)-P25 was studied. A comparative study to demonstrate the viability of this solar installation was done to establish if the concentration reached in the focus of the Fresnel lens was enough to improve the photocatalytic degradation reaction. The degradation efficiency was higher when the photolysis was carried out under concentrated solar energy irradiation as compared to UV light source in the presence of an electron acceptor such us H(2)O(2) and the catalyst TiO(2). The effect of hydrogen peroxide, pH and catalyst concentration was also determined. The increase of H(2)O(2) concentration until a critical value (14.7 mM) increased both the solar and artificial UV oxidation reaction rate by generating hydroxyl radicals and inhibiting the (e(-)/h(+)) pair recombination, but the excess of hydrogen peroxide decreases the oxidation rate acting as a radical or hole scavenger and reacting with TiO(2) to form peroxo-compounds, contributing to the inhibition of the reaction. The use of the response surface methodology allowed to fit the optimal values of the parameters pH and catalyst concentration leading to the total solar degradation of orange II. The optimal pH range was 4.5-5.5 close to the zero point charge of TiO(2) depending on surface charge of catalyst and dye ionization state. Dosage of catalyst higher than 1.1 gl(-1) decreases the degradation efficiency due to a decrease of light penetration.  相似文献

Titanium dioxide photocatalysis (using 20 0mg l(-1) of TiO2), under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, and photo-Fenton (2 and 56 mg l(-1) iron) were applied to the treatment of different NBCS (non-biodegradable chlorinated solvents), such as dichloroethane, dichloromethane and trichloromethane dissolved in water at 50 mg l(-1). All the tests were performed in a 35-l solar pilot plant with compound parabolic collectors (CPCs) under natural illumination. The two solar treatments were compared with attention to chloride release and TOC mineralisation, as the main parameters. Photo-Fenton was found to be the more appropriate treatment for these compounds, assuming volatilisation as a drawback of photocatalytic degradation of NBCS dissolved in water. In this context, several operating parameters related to NBCS degradation, e.g., treatment time, temperature, hydrogen peroxide consumption and volatility of parent compounds are discussed. The correct choice of operating conditions can very often diminish the problem of volatilisation during treatment.  相似文献

Accumulation, transformation and toxicity of arsenic compounds to Japanese Medaka, Oryzias latipes were investigated. For sodium arsenite [As(II)] and disodium arsenate [As(V)], the mean value for 7-day lethal concentration LC50 for O. latipes were 14.6 and 30.3 mg As/l, respectively. Direct accumulation of arsenic in O. latipes increased as a function of As(III) concentration in water. A small proportion of accumulated arsenic was transformed to methylated arsenic. As much as 70% of the total arsenic accumulated in tissue was depurated. Accumulation and transformation of As(III) by O. latipes in a simple freshwater food chain were also investigated. The transformation of As(III) to As(V) by organisms was more prevalent than biomethylation of accumulated arsenic in organisms of the three steps of the food chain.  相似文献

Kinetics and mechanism of TNT degradation in TiO2 photocatalysis   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9

The photocatalytic degradation of TNT in a circular photocatalytic reactor, using a UV lamp as a light source and TiO(2) as a photocatalyst, was investigated. The effects of various parameters such as the initial TNT concentration, and the initial pH on the TNT degradation rate of TiO(2) photocatalysis were examined. In the presence of both UV light illumination and TiO(2) catalyst, TNT was more effectively degraded than with either UV or TiO(2) alone. The reaction rate was found to obey pseudo first-order kinetics represented by the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model. In the mineralization study, TNT (30 mg/l) photocatalytic degradation resulted in an approximately 80% TOC decrease after 150 min, and 10% of acetate and 57% of formate were produced as the organic intermediates, and were further degraded. NO(-)(3) NO(-)(2), and NH(+)(4) were detected as the nitrogen byproducts from photocatalysis and photolysis, and more than 50% of the total nitrogen was converted mainly to NO(-)(3)in the photocatalysis. However, NO(-)(3) did not adsorbed on the TiO(2) surface. TNT showed higher photocatalytic degradation efficiency at neutral and basic pH.  相似文献

The photolysis of simulating low concentration of hydrogen sulfide malodorous gas was studied under UV irradiation emitted by self-made microwave discharge electrodeless lamps (i.e. microwave UV electrodeless mercury lamp (185/253.7 nm) and iodine lamp (178.3/180.1/183/184.4/187.6/206.2 nm)). Experiments results showed that the removal efficiency (eta H2S) of hydrogen sulfide was decreased with increasing initial H2S concentration and increased slightly with gas residence time; H2S removal efficiency was decreased dramatically with enlarged pipe diameter. Under the experimental conditions with pipe diameter of 36 mm, gas flow rate of 0.42 standard l s(-1), eta H2S was 52% with initial H2S concentration of 19.5 mg m(-3) by microwave mercury lamp, the absolute removal amount (ARA) was 4.30 microg s(-1), and energy yield (EY) was 77.3 mg kW h(-1); eta H2S was 56% with initial H2S concentration of 18.9 mg m(-3) by microwave iodine lamp, the ARA was 4.48 microg s(-1), and the EY was 80.5mg kW h(-1). The main photolysis product was confirmed to be SO4(2-) with IC.  相似文献
