To test the feasibility of the reuse of iron-rich sludge (IRS) produced from a coal mine drainage treatment plant for removing As(III) and As(V) from aqueous solutions, we investigated various parameters, such as contact time, pH, initial As concentration, and competing ions, based on the IRS characterization. The IRS consisted of goethite and calcite, and had large surface area and small particles. According to energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mapping results, As was mainly removed by adsorption onto iron oxides. The adsorption kinetic studies showed that nearly 70 % adsorption of As was achieved within 1 h, and the pseudo-second-order model well explained As sorption on the IRS. The adsorption isotherm results agreed with the Freundlich isotherm model, and the maximum adsorption capacities for As(III) and As(V) were 66.9 and 21.5 mg/g, respectively, at 293 K. In addition, the adsorption showed the endothermic character. At high pH or in the presence of phosphate, the adsorption of As was decreased. When the desorption experiment was conducted to reuse the IRS, 85 % As was desorbed with 1.0 N NaOH. In the column experiment, adsorbed As in real acid mine drainage was 43 % of the maximum adsorbed amount of As in the batch test. These results suggested that the IRS is an effective adsorbent for As and can be effectively applied for the removal of As in water and wastewater.  相似文献

Equilibrium sorption studies of anionic species of arsenite, As(III) ions and arsenate As(V) ions onto two biosorbents, namely, chitosan and nanochitosan, have been investigated and compared. The results and trends in the sorption behavior are novel, and we have observed during the sorption process of the As(III) and As(V) on chitosan, a slow process of desorption occurred after an initial maximum adsorption capacity was achieved, before reaching a final but lower equilibrium adsorption capacity. The same desorption trend, however, is not observed on nanochitosan. The gradual desorption of As(III) and As(V) in the equilibrium sorption on chitosan is attributed to the different fractions of the dissociated forms of arsenic on the adsorbent surface and in solution and the extent of protonation of chitosan with the changing of solution pH during sorption. The change of solution pH during the sorption of arsenite ions on chitosan was also influenced by the interaction between the buffering effect of the arsenite species in the aqueous medium and the physical properties of chitosan. The final equilibrium adsorption capacity of chitosan for As(III) and As(V) was found to be around 500 and 8000 μg/g, respectively, whereas the capacities on nanochitosan are 6100 and 13,000 μg/g, respectively.

The removal of arsenic(V) by a new Ce-Fe adsorbent was evaluated under various conditions. Under an initial As(V) of 1.0 mg l(-1), the adsorption capacity of the Ce-Fe absorbent was constant around a value of 16 mgg(-1) over a wide pH range (3-7), while a maximum adsorption capacity of 8.3 mgg(-1) was obtained over a narrow pH range around 5.5 for activated alumina, a conventional adsorbent. Kinetics of adsorption obeys a pseudo-first-order rate equation with the rate constant K(ad) as 1.84 x 10(-3) min(-1). The pattern of adsorption of As(V) by the adsorbent fitted well both the Langmuir and Freundlich models. A Langmuir Q(0) of 70.4 mgg(-1) was obtained at an initial pH of 5.0 and temperature of 20 degrees C, significantly higher than those of other adsorbents reported. Phosphate seriously inhibited the removal of As(V) while fluoride did not compete with As(V) even at an F/As molar ratio as high as 30, suggesting that the adsorption sites for As(V) and fluoride were different. Salinity, hardness, and other inorganic anions such as Cl(-), NO(3)(-), and SO(4)(2-) had no apparent effect on As(V) adsorption. Fourier transform infrared spectra of Ce-Fe adsorbent before and after As(V) adsorption demonstrated that M-OH groups plays an important role for As(V) ions removal in the adsorption mechanisms of Ce-Fe adsorbent.  相似文献

Leachate derived from unlined coal ash disposal facilities is a potential anthropogenic source of arsenic to the environment. To establish a theoretical framework for predicting attenuation of arsenic by soils subject to ash landfill leachate, which is typically enriched in calcium and sulfate, the adsorption of As(V) and As(III) was characterized from 1 mM CaSO4 for 18 soils obtained down-gradient from three ash landfill sites and representing a wide range in soil properties. As(V) consistently exhibited an order of magnitude greater adsorption than As(III). As(V) adsorption was best described by coupling pH with 15 s DCB-Fe (R2 = 0.851,  = 0.001), although pH coupled to clay, DCB-Fe, or DCB-Al also generated strong correlations. For As(III), pH coupled to Ox–Fe (R2 = 0.725,  = 0.001) or Ox–Fe/Al (R2 = 0.771,  = 0.001) provided the best predictive relationships. Ca2+ induced increases in As(V) adsorption whereas sulfate suppressed both As(V) and As(III) adsorption. Attenuation of arsenic from ash leachate agreed well with adsorption measured from 1 mM CaSO4 suggesting that the use of 1 mM CaSO4 in laboratory adsorption tests is a reasonable approach for estimating arsenic behavior in soils surrounding ash landfills. We also showed that the impact of leachate-induced changes in soil pH over time may not be significant for As(V) adsorption at pH < 7; however, As(III) adsorption may be impacted over a wider pH range especially if phyllosilicate clays contribute significantly to adsorption. The benefits and limitations of predicting arsenic mobility using linearized adsorption coefficients estimated from nonlinear adsorption isotherms or from the relationships generated in this study are also discussed.  相似文献

The TiO2-catalyzed photooxidation of arsenite (As(III)) to arsenate (As(V)) was studied in aqueous TiO2 suspensions using a solar simulator which emitted ultraviolet and visible radiations. The concentration of As(III) was varied between 50 microg l(-1) and 10 mg l(-1), and the concentration of TiO2 between 1 mg l(-1) and 50 mg l(-1). Total oxidation of As(III) to As(V) occurred within minutes. The concentration of As(III) declined exponentially which indicates first-order kinetics. In the pH range between 5 and 9 there was no significant influence of the pH of the suspension on the reaction rate. Batch experiments without irradiation showed that part of the arsenic was adsorbed on the TiO2 surface. When using 100 microg l(-1) As and between 1 mg l(-1) and 50 mg l(-1) TiO2, 8-39% of As(III) and up to 73% of As(V) were adsorbed by TiO2. As(III) was also oxidized by UV radiation in the absence of TiO2, but the reaction was slower than in the presence of TiO2 resulting in an irradiation time too long for practical use. In addition, oxidation of As(III) in the presence of TiO2 was also observed under solar irradiation within a few minutes.  相似文献

The aim of this investigation was to obtain the hybrid material precursor to the naturally and abundantly available sericite, a mica-based clay; the materials were further employed in the remediation of arsenic from aqueous solutions. The study was intended to provide a cost-effective and environmentally benign treatment technology. The hybrid organo-modified sericite was obtained using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA) and alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride (AMBA) organic surfactants by introducing regulated doses of HDTMA or AMBA. The materials were characterized using infrared and X-ray diffraction analytical data, whereas the surface morphology was discussed by taking its SEM images. These materials were employed to assess the pre-concentration and speciation of As(III) and As(V) from aqueous solutions. The batch reactor data showed that increasing the sorptive concentration (from 1.0 to 15.0 mg/L) and pH (i.e., pH 2.0 to 10.0) caused the percent uptake of As(III) and As(V) to decrease significantly. The kinetic data showed that a sharp initial uptake of arsenic reached its equilibrium state within about 50 min of contact time, and the sorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order rate law both for As(III) and As(V) sorption. A 1,000 times increase in the background electrolyte concentration, i.e., NaNO3, caused a significant decrease in As(III) removal, whereas As(V) was almost unaffected, which inferred that As(III) was adsorbed, mainly by the van der Waals or even by the electrostatic attraction, whereas As(V) was adsorbed chemically and formed “inner-sphere” complexes at the solid/solution interface. The equilibrium state modeling studies indicated that the sorption data fitted well the Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherms. Henceforth, the removal capacity was calculated under these equilibrium conditions. It was noted that organo-modified sericite possessed a significantly higher removal capacity compared to its virgin sericite. Between these two organo-modified sericite, the HDTMA-modified sericite possessed a higher removal capacity compared to the AMBA-modified sericite.  相似文献

Removal of arsenic from groundwater by granular titanium dioxide adsorbent   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Bang S  Patel M  Lippincott L  Meng X 《Chemosphere》2005,60(3):389-397
A novel granular titanium dioxide (TiO2) was evaluated for the removal of arsenic from groundwater. Laboratory experiments were carried out to investigate the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent and the effect of anions on arsenic removal. Batch experimental results showed that more arsenate [As(V)] was adsorbed on TiO2 than arsenite [As(III)] in US groundwater at pH 7.0. The adsorption capacities for As(V) and As(III) were 41.4 and 32.4 mgg(-1) TiO2, respectively. However, the adsorbent had a similar adsorption capacity for As(V) and As(III) (approximately 40 mgg(-1)) when simulated Bangladesh groundwater was used. Silica (20 mgl(-1)) and phosphate (5.8 mgl(-1)) had no obvious effect on the removal of As(V) and As(III) by TiO2 at neutral pH. Point-of-entry (POE) filters containing 3 l of the granular adsorbent were tested for the removal of arsenic from groundwater in central New Jersey, USA. Groundwater was continuously passed through the filters at an empty bed contact time (EBCT) of 3 min. Approximately 45,000 bed volumes of groundwater containing an average of 39 microgl(-1) of As(V) was treated by the POE filter before the effluent arsenic concentration increased to 10 microgl(-1). The total treated water volumes per weight of adsorbent were about 60,000 l per 1 kg of adsorbent. The field filtration results demonstrated that the granular TiO2 adsorbent was very effective for the removal of arsenic in groundwater.  相似文献

The adsorption of As(V) by amorphous iron oxide was investigated at 25°C, 0.01 M NaNO3 background electrolyte as a function of solution pH(4–10) at three initial As(V) concentrations and two Fe(III) concentrations. As(V) adsorption increased with decreasing pH. A modified Langmuir isotherm has been used for describing an equilibrium partition existing between solid and liquid phases. The triple-layer model was used for simulating As(V) adsorption on iron oxide surface. This model was able to describe As(V) adsorption over the pH range 4–10, all at the concentrations of As(V) and Fe(III) studied. =Fe(H2AsO4)0, = Fe(HAsO4) and = Fe(AsO4)2− have been shown through simulation with inner-sphere complexation products to be more consistent with experimental adsorption observations than complexation with other surface species.  相似文献

A simple HG-AAS technique has been evaluated and standardised for rapid speciation of As(III) and As(V) in a number of contaminated groundwater samples of West Bengal, India. Citric acid has been used for selective hydride formation of As(III). The sensitivity of the evaluated HG-AAS method is 7.91 mg(-1)l, standard deviation, 0.001 and detection limit, 0.4 microg l(-1). As(III) sensitivity remains constant in the sample pH range of 2.3-10.6. Concomitant mineral matrix of the water samples did not interfere with arsenic determination. Eight out of ten groundwater samples analysed for As(IlI)and As(V) contain more As(III), which lies in the range of 54-350 ppb. As(III) estimation in drinking water along with total arsenic should be invoked as a policy for a realistic risk assessment of the contaminated water.  相似文献

The As(V) adsorption onto gibbsite under different experimental conditions was examined. Macroscopic data suggests strong As(V) bonding on gibbsite possibly via a bidendate binuclear complexation mechanism. The As(V) adsorption was quantified with the charge distribution multi-site ions complexation (CD-MUSIC) model distributing the anion charge over 0- and 1-planes according to the modified Pauling's bond valence theory. In the dual-adsorbates system of As(III) and As(V), the As(III) adsorption was predicted up to pH 8 utilizing the binding constants derived for single-adsorbate data. However, with pH > 8, the modeled As(III) adsorption data is overestimating the experimental values.  相似文献

The uptake and metabolism of arsenate, As(V), as a function of time and concentration were examined in the lichen Hypogymnia physodes (L.) Nyl. Lichen thalli were exposed to As(V) in the form of a solution. Exponential uptake of As(V) from 4 microg mL(-1) As(V) solution was accompanied by constant arsenite, As(III), excretion back into the solution. Arsenate taken up into the lichens from 0, 0.1, 1, 10 microg mL(-1) As(V) solutions was partially transformed into As(III), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) and (mono)methylarsonic acid (MA). 48 h after exposure, the main arsenic compound in the lichens was DMA in 0.1, As(III) in 1 and As(V) in 10 microg mL(-1) treatment. The proportion of methylated arsenic compounds decreased with increasing arsenate concentration in the exposure solution. These results suggest that at least two types of As(V) detoxification exist in lichens; arsenite excretion and methylation.  相似文献

The adsorption experiment of nickel ion [Ni(II)] on gamma-type alumina by a differential bed reactor in aqueous solutions was investigated to determine the adsorption characteristics and overall adsorption rate. The adsorbed amount increased rapidly with pH from pH 2 to 6 and kept constant over pH 6. The adsorbed amount of Ni(II) increased with temperature from 20 to 50 degrees C. Correlation coefficients (R2) of Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were 0.9268 and 0.9489, respectively, and Freundlich isotherm was more suitable for adsorption on gamma-type alumina than Langmuir isotherm. The overall adsorption rate of Ni(II) on gamma-type alumina at pH 6 by a differential bed rector was determined as follows: r = 68.77Ce(1.61) - 17.60qe(0.36). Al(III) ions in solutions were away from the alumina surface during the adsorption of Ni(II) and Al(III) concentration increased with an increasing Ni(II) adsorbed amount on alumina.  相似文献

Iron(III)-poly(hydroxamic acid) resin complex has been studied for its sorption abilities with respect to arsenate and arsenite anions from an aqueous solution. The complex was found effective in removing the arsenate anion in the pH range of 2.0 to 5.5. The maximum sorption capacity was found to be 1.15 mmol/g. The sorption selectivity showed that arsenate sorption was not affected by chloride, nitrate and sulphate. The resin was tested and found effective for removal of arsenic ions from industrial wastewater samples.  相似文献

It was reported the adsorption of As(III) on the surface of the chitosan-Fe-crosslinked complex. Theoretical correlation of the experimental equilibrium adsorption data for As(III)/Ch-Fe system is best explained by the non-linearized form Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm model. At optimum conditions, pH 9.0, the maximum adsorption capacity, calculated using the Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm model was 13.4 mg g−1. The adsorption kinetics of As(III) onto Ch-Fe are described by the pseudo-first-order kinetic equation. The results of the Mössbauer spectroscopy showed that there is no redox process on the surface of the adsorbent.  相似文献

On the mechanistic modeling of As(III) adsorption on gibbsite   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Arsenite adsorption on gibbsite was examined as a function of pH, ionic strength (I) and contact time (t(C)). As(III) showed a weak affinity for gibbsite surface. The trends of pH=f(Gamma(ads)) curves have showed a marked deviation from a typical anion adsorption edge showing a maximum Gamma(ads) around pH approximately 8.2. The experimentally derived proton exchange ratio has always converged to zero when 0.26< summation operator [As(III)]<7 microM and 6.2相似文献

This study describes the competitive effects of selected ions and natural organic matter on As(V) removal using reclaimed iron-oxide coated sands (RIOCS) in the single- and multi-ion systems. A 2(7-3) factional factorial experimental design (FFD) was employed for screening main competitive factors in this adsorption process. As a result, the inhibitive competition effects of the anions on As(V) removal in the single ion system were in the following sequence: PO(4)(3-)>SiO(3)(2-)>HCO(3)(-)>humic acid (HA)>SO(4)(2-)>Cl(-), whereas the cation Ca(2+) was observed to enhance the As(V) removal. In addition, the optimum initial pH for As(V) removal in single-ion system was 5. Based on the estimates of major effects and interactions from the FFD, PO(4)(3-), SiO(3)(2-), Ca(2+) and HA were important factors on As(V) removal in the multi-ion system. The promoters for the As(V) removal were found to be Ca(2+) and, to a lesser extent, SO(4)(2-). The competitive effects of these ions on As(V) removal were in the order of PO(4)(3-), SiO(3)(2-), HA, HCO(3)(-), and Cl(-). In the single ion system, the efficiencies of As(V) removal range from 75% to 96%, much higher than those in the multi-ion system (44%) at the initial pH 5. Clearly, there were some complex anion interactions in the multi-ion system. To promote the removal of As(V) by RIOCS, it is proposed to lower the pH in the single-ion system, while in the multi-ion system, the increase of the Ca(2+) concentration, or decreases of PO(4)(3-), SiO(3)(2-) and HA concentrations is suggested.  相似文献

Removal of arsenic from water by electrocoagulation   总被引:16,自引:0,他引:16
In the present study electrocoagulation (EC) has been evaluated as a treatment technology for arsenite [As(III)] and arsenate [As(V)] removal from water. Laboratory scale experiments were conducted with three electrode materials namely, iron, aluminum and titanium to assess their efficiency. Arsenic removal obtained was highest with iron electrodes. EC was able to bring down aqueous phase arsenic concentration to less than 10 microgl(-1) with iron electrodes. Current density was varied from 0.65 to 1.53 mAcm(-2) and it was observed that higher current density achieved rapid arsenic removal. Experimental results at different current densities indicated that arsenic removal was normalized with respect to total charge passed and therefore charge density has been used to compare the results. Effect of pH on arsenic removal was not significant in the pH range 6-8. Comparative evaluation of As(III) and As(V) removal by chemical coagulation (with ferric chloride) and electrocoagulation has been done. The comparison revealed that EC has better removal efficiency for As(III), whereas As(V) removal by both processes was nearly same. The removal mechanism of As(III) by EC seems to be oxidation of As(III) to As(V) and subsequent removal by adsorption/complexation with metal hydroxides generated in the process.  相似文献

Birnessite not only oxidizes arsenite into arsenate but also interacts with organic matter in various ways. However, effects of organic matter on interaction between As and birnessite remain unclear. This study investigated effects of citrate and EDTA (3.12 and 2.05 mM, respectively) on oxidation of As(III) (1.07 mM) and adsorption of As(V) (0.67 mM) on birnessite (5.19 mM as Mn) at near-neutral pH. We found that As(V) adsorption on birnessite was enhanced by citrate and EDTA, which resulted from the increase in active adsorption sites via dissolution of birnessite. In comparison with citrate batches, more As was adsorbed on birnessite in EDTA batches, where dissolved Mn was mainly presented as Mn(III)-EDTA complex. Citrate or EDTA-induced dissolution of birnessite did not decrease the As(III) oxidation rate in the initial stage where As(III) oxidation rate was rapid. Afterwards, As(III) oxidation was conspicuously suppressed in citrate-amended batches, which was mainly attributed to the decrease in adsorption sites by adsorption of citrate/Mn(II)-citrate complex. This suppression was enhanced by the increase in concentrations of dissolved Mn(II). Citrate inhibited As adsorption after As(III) oxidation due to the strong competitive adsorption of citrate/Mn(II)-citrate complex. However, the As(III) oxidation rate was increased in EDTA-amended batches in the late stage, which mainly derived from the increase in the active sites via birnessite dissolution. The strong complexation ability of EDTA led to formation of Mn(III)-EDTA complex. Arsenic adsorption was not affected due to the limited competitive adsorption of the complex on the solid. This work reveals the critical role of low molecular weight organic acids in geochemical behaviors of As and Mn in aqueous environment.

In this study, the effects of three widespread heavy metals, As(III), As(V) and Cd, and their binary mixtures on the proteomic profile in D. magna were examined to screen novel protein biomarkers using the two-dimensional gel electrophoresis method (2DE). Ten 20d daphnia were exposed to the LC20 concentrations for each of a total of 8 treatments, including the control, As(III), As(V), Cd, [As(III)+As(V)], [As(III)+Cd], [As(V)+Cd], and [As(III), As(V), Cd], for 24 h before protein isolation. Three replicates were performed for each treatment. These protein samples were employed for 2DE experiments with a pH gradient gel strip from pH 3 to pH 10. The protein spots were detected by a silver staining process and their intensities were analyzed by Progenesis software to discover the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in response to each heavy metal. A total of 117 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were found in daphnia responding to the 8 treatments and mapped onto a 2D proteome map, which provides some information of the molecular weight (MW) and pI value for each protein. All of these DEPs are considered as potential candidates for protein biomarkers in D. magna for detecting heavy metals in the aquatic ecosystem. Comparing the proteomic results among these treatments suggested that exposing D. magna to binary mixtures of heavy metals may result in some complex interactive molecular responses within them, rather than just the simple sum of the proteomic profiles of the individual chemicals, (As(III), As(V), and Cd).  相似文献
