Removal of Cu2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, and Zn2+ from aqueous solutions by activated carbon prepared from stems and seed hulls of Cicer arietinum, an agricultural solid waste, has been studied. The influence of various parameters, such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, and initial concentration of metal ions on removal was evaluated. The activated carbon was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and elemental analysis. Sorption isotherms were studied using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. All experimental sorption data were fitted to the sorption models using nonlinear least-squares regression. The maximum adsorption capacity values for activated carbon prepared from Cicer arietinum waste for metal ions were 18 mg g?1 (Cu2+), 18 mg g?1 (Cd2+), 20 mg g?1 (Pb2+), and 20 mg g?1 (Zn2+), respectively. The Freundlich isotherm model fit was best, followed by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Desorption studies were carried out with dilute hydrochloric acid for quantitative recovery of the metal ions and for regeneration of the adsorbent.  相似文献

The adsorption of chromium(VI) onto ZnCl2 activated carbon developed from coir pith was investigated to assess the possible use of this adsorbent. The influence of contact time, adsorbent dose, Cr(VI) concentration, pH and temperature were investigated. The two theoretical adsorption isotherms, namely, Langmuir and Freundlich were used to describe the experimental results. The Langmuir adsorption capacity (Q 0) was found to be 120.5?mg Cr(VI) per g of the adsorbent. The adsorption followed the second-order kinetics and was found to be maximum at pH 2.0. The pH effect and the desorption studies showed that ion exchange mechanism might be involved in the adsorption process. The effects of foreign ions such as chloride, sulphate, phosphate, selenite, molybdate, nitrate and perchlorate on the removal of Cr(VI) have been investigated. The removal of Cr(VI) from synthetic ground water was also tested. The results show that ZnCl2 activated coir pith carbon is effective for the removal of Cr(VI) from water.  相似文献

Removal of congo red dye from water using carbon slurry waste   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A cheaper adsorbent has been prepared from carbon slurry waste obtained from National Fertilizer Limited (NFL), Panipat and investigated for the removal of congo red, an anionic dye. Its adsorption on prepared carbonaceous adsorbent was studied as a function of contact time, concentration and temperature. The results have shown that carbonaceous adsorbent adsorbs dye to a sufficient extent (272 mg g-1). A comparative study of adsorption results with those obtained on activated charcoal shows that the carbonaceous adsorbent is ~95% efficient as compared to activated charcoal. Thus, it can be fruitfully used for the removal of dyes from wastewaters.This work has been presented at the National Symposium on Biochemical Sciences: Health and Environmental Aspects (BSHEA—2003), Agra, India (2003).  相似文献

The present investigation deals with fluoride removal from aqueous solution by thermally activated neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves carbon (ANC) and thermally activated kikar (Acacia arabica) leaves carbon (AKC) adsorbents. In this study neem leaves carbon and kikar leaves carbon prepared by heating the leaves at 400 degrees C in electric furnace was found to be useful for the removal of fluoride. The adsorbents of 0.3 mm and 1.0 mm sizes of neem and kikar leaves carbon was prepared by standard sieve. Batch experiments done to see the fluoride removal properties from synthetic solution of 5 ppm to study the influence of pH, adsorbent dose and contact time on adsorption efficiency The optimum pH was found to be 6 for both adsorbents. The optimum dose was found to be 0.5g/100 ml forANC (activated neem leaves carbon) and 0.7g/100 ml forAKC (activated kikar leaves carbon). The optimum time was found to be one hour for both the adsorbent. It was also found that adsorbent size of 0.3 mm was more efficient than the 1.0 mm size. The adsorption process obeyed Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The straight line of log (qe-q) vs time at ambient temperature indicated the validity of langergren equation consequently first order nature of the process involved in the present study. Results indicate that besides intraparticle diffusion there maybe other processes controlling the rate which may be operating simultaneously. All optimized conditions were applied for removal of fluoride from four natural water samples.  相似文献

As a biomass agricultural waste material, coconut shells were used for the preparation of high-quality modified activated carbon. Chemical modification of the surface of the prepared activated carbon is done by oxidation using H2O2 and HNO3, respectively. The surface area and pore volume of the coconut shells activated carbon are increased by the chemical modification, and followingly the removal of the metals is improved. The structural morphology and composition of the modified activated carbon coconut shells (MACCS) were evaluated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, thermogravimetric analysis–differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), surface area analysis (SAA), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and sulfur (CHNS) elemental analysis. The prepared MACCS has reasonably good chemical stability. The influence of solution pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, adsorption temperature, initial metal concentrations, and interfering ions on the adsorption performance of the investigated ions onto the prepared sorbent was examined by a batch method. The selectivity sequence for sorption of Eu3+, Ce3+, Sr2+, and Cs+ ions on MACCS was found to be Eu3+?>?Ce3+?>?Sr2+?>?Cs+. The saturation capacities of MACCS for the studied metal ions were found to be 136.84, 85.55, 69.85, and 60.00?mg?g?1 for Eu3+, Ce3+, Sr2+, and Cs+ ions, respectively. The thermodynamic parameters, ΔH°, ΔS°, and ΔG° were also evaluated.  相似文献

The adsorption characteristics of 1,1,1,2‐tetrafluoroethane (HFC‐134a) on activated carbon were investigated to evaluate the recovery efficiency of HFC‐134a by six activated carbons (two granular activated carbons (GAC1 and GAC2), one high‐surface area activated carbon (HAC), and three activated carbon fibers (ACF10, ACF15, and ACF20)). HFC‐134a adsorption on the activated carbons increased with increase in the specific surface area and pore volume of the activated carbon. The differential heat of the HFC‐134a adsorption decreased with increase in the percentage of the micropore volume to the total pore volume. The adsorption model of HFC‐134a on the activated carbon could be based on the Langmuir model. The constant a of the Langmuir plot of HAC and ACF20 is smaller than GAC1 or GAC2 and ACF10 or ACF15, respectively. The constant Ws of HAC has the largest value. The constant a was correlated to the heat of adsorption. It is concluded that the largest amount of HFC‐134a was adsorbed on HAC, and the least amount of interaction occurred between HFC‐134a and the HAC. The amount of HFC‐134a adsorbed on the activated carbons over time was applied to the Sameshima equation. The adsorption rate constant of HFC‐134a on HAC was the largest. The HAC could be suitable for the recovery of HFC‐134a.  相似文献

Biochar, is a low-cost material that can be used as an alternative adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals. In this study, a low-cost and efficient adsorbent synthesised from Jatropha curcas seeds was used for the uptake of Cu2+ from aqueous solutions. The as-prepared adsorbent was characterised by scanning electron microscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis post calcination at 500 °C, its BET surface area and total pore volume were 39.62?m2?g?1 and 0.049?m3?g?1, respectively. Subsequently, the effects of initial pH of the solution, contact time, and adsorbent material dosage on the adsorption of Cu2+ by the prepared adsorbent were investigated. The as-prepared adsorbent exhibited a high performance, with a maximum adsorption amount of 32.895?mg?g?1 for Cu2+ at pH 5.0 and 25 °C, owing to the presence of ?OH, C=O, C–O, Si-O-Si, and O-Si-O on its surface. The predominant Cu2+ adsorption mechanism was assumed to be ion exchange. Notably, the Cu2+ adsorption could attain equilibrium within 90?min. In addition, the fact that the Langmuir model was a better fit than the Freundlich model for the isotherm data of Cu2+ adsorption by the as-prepared adsorbent suggested that the adsorption of Cu2+ was a monolayer adsorption process.  相似文献

A new adsorbent (ABS) with amidoxime functional group was prepared through graft polymerization of acrylonitrile onto banana stem (BS) using ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN)/HNO3 initiator system, followed by treatment with hydroxylamine hydrochloride in alkaline solution. Infrared spectroscopy, surface area analyzer, thermogravimetry, and potentiometric titration were used for the characterization of the adsorbent. Effective removal of U(VI) ions was demonstrated at the pH range 4.0–6.0. The mechanism for the removal of U(VI) ions by ABS was based on complexation adsorption model. Equilibrium was achieved in approximately 3 h. The experimental kinetic data were analyzed using first-order, second-order, and Elovich kinetic models, and are well fitted with second-order kinetics. The temperature dependence indicates an exothermic process. U(VI) adsorption was found to decrease with increase of ionic strength. The Freundlich isotherm model fitted the experimental equilibrium data well. The adsorption efficiency was tested using synthetic nuclear industry effluents. The maximum adsorption capacity for U(VI) removal was found to be 80 mg g-1 at 20°C. Adsorbed U(VI) ions were desorbed effectively, about 99% by 0.2 M HCl. Repeated adsorption/desorption cycles show the feasibility of the ABS for the removal of U(VI) ions from water and nuclear industry effluents.  相似文献

本文主要研究了改性对活性炭的表面物理化学特征和对其吸附金属离子性能的影响。研究发现,硝酸氧化可显著增加活性炭表面酸性基团的含量,提高活性炭的表面亲水性,降低pHpzc值,并造成活性炭的结构塌陷和比表面积的减少,因而对活性炭吸附性能产生明显影响,可明显提高对Pb^2 等金属离子的吸附容量。  相似文献

This study is to develop a carbon-based adsorbent containing multiple functional ligands for effective removal of lead ions from aqueous media. Activated carbon was oxidized by nitric acid, followed by chlorination with thionyl chloride and reaction with ethylenediamine. Modified activated carbon (MAC) was characterized using scanning electron microscopy in conjunction of energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and potentiometric titration. Surface characterizations confirmed that carboxyl, amine, and chlorine functional groups were effectively introduced onto the carbon surface by the treatments. The modifications lowered the pH at the point of zero charge (pHpzc) from 9.6 to 2.55 and resulted in more negatively charged surfaces. Adsorptive experiments showed that aqueous Pb removal by MAC was faster, with a 62% higher capacity than the original activated carbon (60.2 vs. 37.2 mg g−1).  相似文献

A polymer with characteristics similar to those of humic acids was obtained by synthesis reactions from oxidative polymerization in an alkaline medium using para-benzoquinone, hydroquinone and 4-aminobenzoic acid as precursors. Samples of natural and synthetic humic acid were used to examine the adsorption behavior of Cu2+ ions on these substrates. The mathematical models described by Langmuir and Freundlich equations were applied, yielding the maximum adsorption intensity values K′ (Langmuir), maximum adsorption capacity, b (Langmuir) and the adsorbent adsorption capacity, m (Freundlich). Based on solubility studies, pH 3 was selected for the development of the adsorption experiment. The Cu2+ ion presented a favorable adsorption, with RL (equilibrium parameter) responses in Langmuir isotherms falling within the desirable ranges.  相似文献

In this paper, steam-produced activated carbon (STAC) from maize tassel (MT) was evaluated for its ability to remove basic dye (methylene blue MB) from aqueous solution in a batch adsorption process. The equilibrium experiments were conducted in the range of 50–300 mg/L initial MB concentrations at 30°C, for effect of pH, adsorbent dosage and contact time. The experimental data were analysed by Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models of adsorption. Freundlich adsorption isotherm was found to have highest value of R2(R2=0.97) compared to other models of Langmuir and Temkin having (0.96 and 0.95 respectively). STAC has a high adsorptive capacity for MB dye (200 mg/g) and also showed favourable adsorption for the dye with the separation factor (RL<1) for the dye-activated carbon system. The kinetic data obtained were analysed using pseudo first-order kinetic equation and pseudo second-order kinetic equation. The experimental data fitted well into pseudo second-order kinetic equation, as demonstrated by the high value of R2.  相似文献

Highly activated carbon from the seed husk of Casuarina Casuarinas equisetifolia, a worldwide famous plant, have been prepared and tested for the removal of toxic Cr(VI) from its aqueous solution. The adsorbent was investigated for influences of initial chromium concentration (75, 100, 125, and 150 mg l-1), pH, contact time, and quantity of carbon on removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution at room temperature (25±2 °C). The adsorption kinetic of Cr(VI) was studied, and the rates of sorption were found to conform to pseudo-second-order kinetics with a good correlation (R2≥0.99). The Langmuir and Freundlich models fit the isotherm data well. Furthermore, the Gibbs free energy was obtained for each system and was found to be-5.29 kJ mol-1 for removal of Cr(IV). The negative value of Δ G° indicates the feasibility and spontaneous nature of adsorption. The results indicate that acidic pH (1.05) supported the adsorption of Cr(IV) on activated carbon. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) on activated carbon was about 172.4 mg g-1 at pH 1.05.  相似文献

Leaf powder of spear grass, otherwise known as Imperata cylindrica (IC), was used to prepare activated carbon. The Imperata cylindrica activated carbon (ICAC) prepared was used for the removal of Congo red (CR) dye from aqueous solution. Operation parameters such as initial dye concentration, contact time, adsorbent dosage, pH, and temperature were studied in batch systems. Equilibrium was attained in 150 and 180?min at lowest and highest concentrations, respectively. Maximum adsorption was observed at pH 3. Quantum chemical studies suggested that the protonation of aniline groups and minimal molecular size at planar geometry coupled with electrostatic interaction enhances the adsorption at low pH. Adsorption data were tested using pseudo-first-order and second-order reaction kinetics; the latter was found to be more suitable with a coefficient of determination of ≥0.99. The adsorption process fits Langmuir isotherm model better than the Freundlich model, with a maximum monolayer coverage of 313?mgg?1. This study shows that ICAC is effective in removing CR dye from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

Removal of cadmium(II), lead(II), and chromium(VI) from aqueous solution using clay, a naturally occurring low-cost adsorbent, under various conditions, such as contact time, initial concentration, temperature, and pH has been investigated. The sorption of these metals follows both Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. The magnitude of Langmuir and Freundlich constants at 30°C for cadmium, lead, and chromium indicate good adsorption capacity. The kinetic rate constants (K ad) indicate that the adsorption follows first order. The thermodynamic parameters: free energy change (ΔG o), enthalpy change (ΔH o), and entropy change (ΔS o) show that adsorption is an endothermic process and that adsorption is favored at high temperature. The results reveal that clay is a good adsorbent for the removal of these metals from wastewater.  相似文献

为了研究土壤和沉积物中凝聚型有机碳(碳黑、干酪根)的含量及其对多环芳烃(PAHs)分布和提取的影响,分别用三氟醋酸(TFA)和在375℃下通氧燃烧的方法从珠江三角洲2个污染土壤和5个河口沉积物样品中提取酸非水解有机碳(NHC)和碳黑(BC);用索氏抽提法和不同溶剂的加速溶剂萃取法(包括连续加速萃取法ASESum和标准溶剂萃取法ASESTD)抽提土壤和沉积物中的多环芳烃,并在不同温度梯度(25℃到150℃)下用水为溶剂加速溶剂萃取其水溶态.结果表明,1)NHC是珠江三角洲土壤和沉积物中总有机碳的重要组成部分,NHC碳明显高于BC碳,NHC和BC分别占土壤和沉积物中有机碳的25.6% ̄73.8%和4.64% ̄17.3%.2)3种有机溶剂(丙酮、甲苯1、甲苯2)连续抽提的PAHs含量是索氏抽提的2.11倍;5种ASE方法(丙酮、甲苯1、甲苯2、ASESum、ASESTD)提取的PAHs含量与NHC含量存在明显的相关性,而且比PAHs含量与BC或无定型有机碳(AOC)含量的相关性更明显.3)在不同温度梯度下水溶态PAHs浓度符合Van’tHoff方程.研究说明除了BC外,非水解有机碳对土壤和沉积物中PAHs的分布和提取具有重要影响.  相似文献

In this study, the adsorption characteristics of As(III) and As(V) from water and wastewater using polyacrylamide-grafted banana stem with quaternary ammonium functionality (PGBS-AE) were investigated. Infrared spectroscopic, and thermogravimetric analyses were performed to affirm the polymer grafting, functionality, morphology, and thermal stability. Batch experiments were carried out to understand the effect of contact time, concentration, pH, adsorbent dose, and temperature of the solution for the adsorption of As(III) and As(V) onto PGBS-AE. Equilibrium was achieved within 1 h and the optimum pH was found to be 9.0 and 3.0 for As(III) and As(V), respectively. Isotherm studies showed that the Langmuir equation fits best. Maximum adsorption capacities of 50 and 5.5?g?kg?1 were obtained for As(III) and As(V) at 30°C. The endothermic nature of adsorption was evident as the adsorption efficiency increased with temperature. The thermodynamic parameters were evaluated to explain the feasibility of adsorption and to predict the nature of adsorption. The competence of the adsorbent for practical purposes was also analyzed by treating with a fertilizer industry effluent sample. Studies pertaining to adsorbent regeneration and readsorption of As(III) and As(V) were carried out for four consecutive cycles.  相似文献

Adsorption performance of activated carbon adsorbers in the downstream duct of vehicle spray painting booths has been studied to understand whether fine paint particles in the off-gas would deteriorate the adsorption capacity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on activated carbons. Three forms of activated carbons were selected and their properties were determined using nitrogen adsorption analysis, the measurement of pH value and total ash content, energy dispersion spectrometer, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Results show that the adsorption capacity of activated carbon strongly depends upon its available specific surface area. When the total uptake on activated carbon approaches saturation, the vapors adsorbed would commence to get displaced by the paint particles gradually as time elapses and finally the uptake of vapors and paint particles reach equilibrium. Microporous carbons, in particular, were much more susceptible to paint particles. A Langmuir-type model for the uptake on activated carbons was suggested, which successfully described the adsorption behaviors of the off-gas released from vehicle spray painting booth.  相似文献

This study described the use of clay impregnated by KI in gas phase elemental mercury (Hgo) removal in flue gas. The effects of KI loading, temperature, O2, SO2 and H2O on Hgo removal were investigated using a fixed bed reactor. The Hgo removal efficiency of KI-clay with 3% KI loading could maintain at a high level (approximately 80 %) after 3 h. The KI-clay demonstrated to be a potential adsorbent for Hgo removal when compared with activated carbon based adsorbent. O2 was found to be an important factor in improving the Hgo removal. O2 was demonstrated to assist the transfer of KI to I2 on the surface of KI-clay, which could react with Hgo directly. NO and SO2 could slightly improve Hgo removal, while H2O inhibited it greatly. The results indicated that after adsorption, most of the mercury escaped from the surface again. Some of the mercury may have been oxidized as it left the surface. The results demonstrated that the chemical reaction primarily occurred between KI and mercury on the surface of the KI-clay.  相似文献

本文研制了一种新型除砷吸附剂,即基于稀土金属铈的无机铈铁吸附剂,并对该吸附剂的除砷效果进行了评价.活性氧化铝和新型研制的铈铁吸附剂对As(Ⅴ)吸附平衡比较实验结果表明:活性氧化铝除砷的最佳 pH为 3.5-5.5,最大吸附量为86mg As(Ⅴ)·g-1;而铈铁吸附剂的pH适用范围广,在pH3-7的范围内具有较高的除砷性能,最大吸附量可达16.0mgAs(Ⅴ)·g-1,该吸附材料对As(Ⅴ)的吸附基本符合Freundlich型等温方程式,硬度、盐度和氟离子不干扰吸附过程,但磷酸根离子干扰材料对As(Ⅴ)的吸附、铈铁无机吸附材料在饮水除砷中具有比较大的应用前景.  相似文献
