The Maximum Experimental Safe Gap (MESG) is an important criterion to assess the propagation of flames through small gaps. This safety-related parameter is used to classify the flammable gases and vapors in explosion groups, which are fundamental to constructional explosion protection. It is used both, for the safe design of flameproof encapsulated devices as well as for selecting flame arresters appropriate to the individual application. The MESG of a fuel is determined experimentally according to the standard ISO/IEC 80079-20-1:2017 at normal conditions (20 °C, 1.0 bar) with air as oxidizing gas. The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of inert gas addition on the MESG in order to assess the effectiveness of inertization in constructional explosion protection. The term limiting experimental safe gap (SG) is used for the result of these measurements. The fuel-air mixtures (fuels: hydrogen, ethylene, propene, methane) used as representatives for the explosion groups in flame arrester testing were chosen and diluted with inert gas (nitrogen, carbon dioxide) before testing. The dependence of the limiting experimental safe gap on the total initial pressure, amount and nature of inert additive is discussed. The initial pressure was varied up to 2.0 bar to include increased pressure conditions used in flame arrester testing. Apart from the well-known reciprocal dependence on the initial pressure, the added inert gas results in an exponential increase of SG. This effect depends on the inertizing potential of the gas and is therefore different with nitrogen and carbon dioxide. The ranking of the fuels is the same as with MESG. As a result, various mixtures of the same limiting experimental safe gap can now be chosen and tested with an individual flame arrester to prove the concept of a constant and device-related limiting safe gap. The work was funded by BG-RCI in Heidelberg (PTB grant number 37056).  相似文献

Many industrial processes are run at non-atmospheric conditions (elevated temperatures and pressures, other oxidizers than air). To judge whether and if yes to what extent explosive gas(vapor)/air mixtures will occur or may be generated during malfunction it is necessary to know the safety characteristic data at the respective conditions. Safety characteristic data like explosion limits, are depending on pressure, temperature and the oxidizer. Most of the determination methods are standardized for ambient conditions. In order to obtain determination methods for non-atmospheric conditions, particularly for higher initial pressures, reliable ignition criteria were investigated. Ignition tests at the explosion limits were carried out for mixtures of methane, propane, n-butane, n-hexane, hydrogen, ammonia and acetone in air at initial pressures up to 20 bar. The tests have been evaluated according to different ignition criteria: visual flame propagation, temperature and pressure rising. It could be shown that flame propagation and occasionally self-sustained combustion for several seconds occurred together with remarkable temperature rise, although the pressure rise was below 3%. The results showed that the combination of a pressure rise criterion of 2% and a temperature rise criterion of 100 K seems to be a suitable ignition criterion for the determination of explosion limits and limiting oxidizer concentration at higher initial pressures and elevated temperatures. The tests were carried out within the framework of a R&D project founded by the German Ministry of Economics and Technology.  相似文献

In-line detonation flame arresters are important safety apparatus to prevent group tank fires caused by the spreading of fire through vapor connection lines. In this study, a DN50 experimental apparatus aimed at the detonation flame penetration characteristics and failure mechanisms in a flame arrester was set up, and a series of experiments were carried out with 6.6% C2H4 and air mixture. Pressure, and velocity of flame penetrating through flame arrester housing and filters were analyzed. Experimental results showed that the attenuation of pressure and velocity was proportional to the thickness of the filters. Two failure modes of the fire-extinguishing process in the flame arrester were captured directly with a high-speed camera. In Mode I, the detonation flame could go straight through the flame arrester filters when the filters were too thin. In Mode II, when the filters were not sufficiently thick, the remained shock wave pressure of detonation flame was still several times of the initial pressure and could rise sharply at the downstream contraction section, resulting in that the flammable gas at the downstream transition section could be compressed and reignited even the flame had been extinguished by filters. These conclusions are helpful to reveal the nature of failure modes of fire-extinguishing process and design flame arresters with high fire-resisting performance by structure improved.  相似文献

Decomposing detonation and deflagration properties of ozone/oxygen mixtures   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In this study, the decomposing detonation and deflagration properties of ozone/oxygen mixtures of up to 20 vol.% of ozone in oxygen under high pressure of up to 1.0 MPa in a tube were experimentally investigated. The mixtures were ignited by an electric spark at the end of the tube. Flame propagation properties such as flame velocity and pressure were measured with thermocouples and piezo electric transducers mounted along the tube. Slow and constant flame propagation profiles were obtained. We also investigated the quenching ability of a wire gauze as well as the concentration limit for flame propagation. However, in spite of slow flame propagation velocity and easy flame quenching properties under these experimental conditions, direct initiation of detonation by the driver detonation of the stoichiometric oxy-hydrogen mixture was easily achieved at much lower concentrations than the limit of deflagration. The observed detonation properties, such as wave velocity and pressure, agreed fairly well with CJ calculated values. The detonation velocity (900–1200 m/s) and the pressure ratio to initial pressures (5–9.5) were not affected by the initial pressure of the mixtures. Near the detonation limit, typical spinning detonations with oscillatory pressure waves were observed.  相似文献

This paper describes the results of extensive research to determine the limit of safety against flame transmission for sintered metal flame arrester elements when stressed by a flashback in a fuel-gas/oxygen mixture and when stressed through a stabilized burning of a flowing mixture of fuel-gas and air and of fuel-gas and oxygen at the sintered metal element. On the basis of the results of these investigations, the limit of safety against flame transmission for sintered metal flame arrester elements can be estimated and the conditions for testing can be specified. An analysis of the protection of gas outlets on gas distribution lines for welding, cutting and allied processes has been carried out, resulting in recommendations for necessary changes to the regulations for testing of safety devices with sintered metal flame arrester elements, which should be made in the next revision of the corresponding technical regulations for acetylene installations and calcium carbide stores (TRAC), and the standards DIN 8521, EN 730 and ISO 5175.  相似文献

Decomposing deflagration properties of acetylene under low temperatures   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this study, the decomposing deflagration properties of acetylene under temperatures down to −60 °C and pressures up to 0.2 MPa in a 1-L cylindrical closed vessel were experimentally investigated. The gases were ignited by an electric spark at the center of the vessel. The lower-limit pressures of decomposing deflagration by electric spark ignition were determined. The lower-limit pressure at 10 °C was 0.15 MPa, and it gradually increased with decreasing temperature. The lower-limit pressure at −60oC was 0.18 MPa. The flame propagation properties, such as the pressure, were measured with pressure transducers mounted along the vessel. The maximum decomposing deflagration pressures and pressure rising rates also increased with decreasing temperature.  相似文献

In autogenous welding, cutting and allied processes, so-called dry safety devices are used to protect the outlet terminals of gas distribution lines. To prevent flame transmission, these units are fitted with sintered metal flame arrester elements. At the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM), extensive investigations have been carried out with an experimental flame arrester to determine the limits of safety against flame transmission for sintered metal flame arrester elements in the case of flashback in fuel gas/oxygen mixtures. On the basis of the results of these investigations, it is possible to estimate the pore sizes up to which a sintered metal element can prevent any flame transmission with a given fuel gas.  相似文献

Retractable type fall arresters are part of the equipment used for protecting people against falls from a height. They are an intermediate part between full body harness worn by a man and the structural anchor at the worksite. The most important task of retractable type fall arresters is to arrest people’s falls and to reduce their harmful consequences. Information received from users as well as laboratories testing protective equipment indicates that the performance of such equipment is incorrect under specific conditions. The paper is concerned with an analysis of the conditions in which retractable type fall arresters demonstrate intermittent performance and with an explanation of that phenomenon. The results of tests investigating anchor devices and the performance of retractable type fall arresters are presented. External and internal factors contributing to intermittent performance have been determined and guidelines for safer use of these devices have been developed.  相似文献

Tests were conducted by the Center for Agricultural Air Quality Engineering and Science (CAAQES) and by Safety Consulting Engineers Inc. (SCE) to determine if dust found in cotton gins (gin dust) would serve as fuel for dust explosions. In other words, is gin dust explosible? The laboratory tests used by CAAQES and SCE are very different. SCE used a totally enclosed 20 liter (L) chamber, flame from a 10,000 J (10 kJ) ignition source, reported that gin dust was a class ‘A’ explosible dust. CAAQES used a 28.3-L (1 ft3) chamber with diaphragm, a stationary coil as the igniter, video and pressure recordings of each test and concluded that gin dust was not explosible. SCE followed the protocols specified by ASTM E1226 and E1515. The only indicator used to determine whether a deflagration occurred during a test was pressure. If the pressure rise exceeded one bar gage (g) in a 20-L chamber test with a flame from a 10 kJ energy source as the igniter, it was assumed that a deflagration occurred in the chamber and the dust was classified as explosible (ASTM E1226-05, 2005). The CAAQES criterion for determining if a dust was explosible consisted of determining the minimum explosive concentration (MEC). If the MEC existed using the CAAQES test system, it was explosible! The criteria used with the CAAQES method for determining the MEC was to test concentrations starting at concentrations above the MEC and lowering the concentrations until at least one of the three tests at that concentration failed to result in a deflagration. The indicators of a deflagration were (1) bursting of a diaphragm, (2) flame front leaving the chamber and (3) characteristic pressure vs. time curve. It was concluded that the ASTM method of using only pressure as the indicator of a deflagration in a totally enclosed chamber would likely result of an “over-driven” test and an incorrect finding that gin dust was explosible. The result of CAAQES testing was that gin dust was not explosible.  相似文献

Frictional processes caused by malfunctions may lead to hot surfaces and mechanical sparks. Whenever mechanical sparks occur due to friction, there are also hot surfaces. The time until the ignition source becomes effective is largely dependent on the thermal conductivity of the friction partners. Based on this, it was examined whether classification into the explosion groups and temperature classes of IEC 60079-0 is possible and useful. This research therefore focuses on the development of hot surfaces and their effectiveness. To assess the formation of hot surfaces, tests for temperature development according to the applied power density and the different materials were performed in a friction apparatus. The experimental setup is realised via a friction pin which is pressed onto a rotating friction disc. The variation of the power density was carried out by changing the velocity and load per area. The temperature distribution was detected by thermocouples, two pyrometers and an infrared camera. For the investigation of the incendivity of hot surfaces, the ignition curves were determined by characteristic reference gases and vapours of the IEC explosion groups and temperature classes. Tests have been carried out with hydrogen, ethylene, diethyl ether, propane and pentane. The experiments have shown that a larger thermal conductivity of the steel used can lead to slow down heating of the pin material. With an increasing wear rate the maximum temperature decreases. It was possible to determine the maximum temperatures at specific power inputs. The ignition tests show that ignitions are possible even at low velocities. The effective ignition source was thereby always the hot surface. The result was a graduation of the explosion limits analogous to the order of Maximum experimental safe gap (MESG) values. In contrast, no significant relationship between the ignition limits and the temperature class of the respective substances was revealed.  相似文献

The present investigation was aimed at demonstrating the pertinent use of a flame/detonation arrester for the safety in the process industry. The experimental data provide information on the performance of a static flame arrester. The experiments were conducted in a 3-m long and 28-mm i.d. tube. The arrester, itself consists in 2-mm i.d. tubes arranged in a honeycomb type structure which is located in the middle of the test tube. This is aimed at promoting heat losses during the passage of the flame. The experiments were conducted with fuel-rich mixtures of methane–ethane–ethylene at initial pressures in the range of 0.1–0.6 MPa. These very rich mixtures were more or less diluted in inert, namely, N2, as well as a mixture of CO2 and Ar, in order to match with compositions that are currently used in the process industry. The experimental results show that this device is appropriate for flame quenching but, in most cases, detonations were not successfully arrested. These unsuccessful operations of the device occurred for flames at a high velocity, namely for Re numbers of the order of or greater than 15,000.  相似文献

Flammability limits of fuel-air and fuel-air-inert gaseous mixtures, especially at non-atmospheric conditions, are essential properties required for establishing safety operating conditions for handling and processing flammable gases. For pure fuels, an important data pool exists, formed by the flammability limits of fuel-air and fuel-air-inert gaseous mixtures at ambient initial conditions measured by standard methods. Such methods can be used for experimental determination of flammability limits for multi-fuels mixed with air, with or without additives, under non-atmospheric conditions. Their use is however a time- and material-consuming process; in addition, the flammability limits obtained by various standard methods may be scattered as a result of different choices in the operating parameters, for each standard method. It appears that a preliminary estimation of the flammability limits for fuel-air and fuel-air-inert gaseous mixtures can minimize the effort of measuring them in specific initial conditions. The present paper describes a new method for estimating the flammability range of fuel-oxidizer gaseous mixtures based on measurements of explosivity properties e.g. the peak explosion pressure and maximum rate of pressure rise recorded during closed vessel laminar explosions of fuel-oxidizer mixtures far from limits. Data obtained for several hydrocarbon-air gaseous mixtures with or without inert gas addition are used to examine the accuracy of estimated flammability limits (LFL – the lower and UFL – the upper flammability limit) as well as of the Limiting Oxygen Concentration (LOC) and the Minimum Inert Concentration (MIC). The predictive ability of the proposed method is examined against the predictive ability of other recently described methods.  相似文献

With the popularity of refrigerants in the process industries, the potential safety problems caused by the use of refrigerants have attracted worldwide attention as people have realized their inherent explosion characteristics of refrigerants. This paper studied the explosion characteristics of refrigerant 2, 3, 3, 3–tetrafluoropropene (R1234yf) at different concentrations and initial pressures based on a 20 L experimental apparatus. The experimental results illustrated the peak overpressure of R1234yf increased with the rise of initial pressure. At a constant ambient temperature of 25 °C, the maximum rate of pressure rise and deflagration index showed an N-shaped trend with the increase of the refrigerant concentration from 6.8% to 10%. The maximum rate of pressure rise and deflagration index increased first and then decreased with the increase of the refrigerant concentration at atmospheric pressure, while they presented an M-shaped trend at pressurization condition. The peak overpressure, the maximum rate of pressure rise, and deflagration index reached 0.742 MPa, 4.04 MPa s−1, and 1.1 MPa.m.s−1 with a refrigerant concentration of 7.6%, respectively, which were less than those of refrigerant propane and difluoromethane (R32) at the optimal concentration. Furthermore, R1234yf exhibited better safety performance compared with refrigerant R32 in the same flammability classification.  相似文献

An experimental investigation of flammability limits of hydrogen, methane and propane in air and oxygen at reduced pressures was carried out. A slow influence of sizes of an experimental vessel of a diameter higher than 125 mm on the flammability limits was revealed, but an influence of a type of an oxidizer (air or oxygen) and an ignition energy is significant. Critical values of an initial pressure for a possibility of a flame propagation were determined. The limiting values of the ignition energy were determined, for which an elevation of this parameter does not influence the critical pressure and the flammability region. A qualitative interpretation of obtained experimental results is given, which is based on a peculiarities of a flame initiation.  相似文献

Experimental studies of deflagration flame quenching by crimped ribbon flame arrestors were performed in a circular ducting with propane-air flammable mixture. The corresponding flameproof velocities were determined systemically. The results showed that the channel length, the expansion ratio and the aperture size must be taken into consideration to predict the performance of the crimped ribbon flame arrestors. To explore the relationship between flameproof velocity and arrestor structure, numerical simulations were carried out. The simulated results showed that with the reduction of the hydraulic diameter of the aperture size, the flameproof velocity is increased, which implies the basic angle must be considered when crimped ribbon flame arrestors are used to quench deflagration flame. In addition, the influence of the expansion ratio is of great significance on the efficiency of flame arrestors. The flameproof velocity can be reduced to be a value related to the expansion ratio. Two empirical formulas were derived to exhibit the relation between the flameproof velocity and the characteristics of the flame arrestor, which can be used to predict the performance of crimped ribbon arrestors.  相似文献

A novel mitigation system against hydrogen-air deflagrations in nuclear power plant buildings is proposed and developed through a series of field experiments using explosion vessels of different volume sizes. The mitigation system is installed on the outer surface of the vessels, and it comprises flame arrester and explosion air bag. The flame arrester is made by stacking 10–20 sheets of fine-mesh wire screens, and the air bag is connected for holding explosion gas. The successful mitigation mechanism is the sequence of pressure-rise reduction by the air bag expansion, flame quenching by the flame arrester, and the slow burning of the gas mixture sucked from the air bag back into the vessel due to the negative pressure caused by the rapid condensation of water vapor inside the vessel. Necessary conditions for the successful mitigation system are discussed, and the practical unit size of flame arrester sheet is recommended.  相似文献

In order to better assess the hazards of explosion accidents, propane-air mixture deflagrations were conducted in a large-scale straight rectangular chamber (with a cross-section of 1.5 m × 1.5 m, length of 10 m, and total volume of 22.5 m3). The effect of initial volume, ignition position, and initial restraints on the explosion characteristics of the propane-air mixtures was investigated. The explosion overpressure, flame propagation, and flame speed were obtained and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software was used to simulate the flame-propagation process and field flow for auxiliary analysis. The hazards of large-scale propagation explosion under weak and strong constraints were evaluated and the different phases of flame propagation under weak and strong constraints were discriminated. Results indicate that the hazards caused by propane deflagration under weak constraint are mainly caused by flame spread. And the maximum overpressure under strong constraint appeared at the front part of the chamber under the large-scale condition, which is consistent with the previous small-scale test. Moreover, the simulations of flame structures under weak and strong constraint are in good agreement with experimental results, which furthers the understanding of large-scale propane deflagration under different initial conditions in large-scale spaces and provides basic data for three-dimensional CFD model improvement.  相似文献
