The morphological variation in bacterial capsules found in suspended and sinking particles from the open ocean is examined. The capsules consist of matrices of mucopolysaccharides that remain attached to and extend the cell surface. Transmission electron microscope images of several distinct and recurring morphs are presented. Capsule abundance relative to total numbers of bacteria is significantly higher in sinking particles (up to 80% of total bacteria present) than in fine suspended particles (up to 20%). Discrete fecal pellets and minipellets are inadequate sources of the capsules captured by sediment traps. Alternatively, the data and previous observations indicate that the bacterial capsules are removed from the fine suspended-particle phase in association with macroaggregates, or marine snow. The combined properties of the bacterial capsules with their extensive open matrices of attached sticky polymers suggest a high aggregation efficiency.  相似文献

Rapid mass sinking of cells following diatom blooms, observed in lakes and the sea, is argued here to represent the transition from a growing to a resting stage in the life histories of these algae. Mass sinking is of survival value in those bloom diatoms that retain viability over long periods in cold, dark water but not in warm, nutrient-depleted surface water. Mechanisms for accelerating sinking speed of populations entering a resting or seeding mode are proposed. Previously unexplained features of diatom form and behaviour take on a new meaning in this context of diatom seeding strategies. Diatoms have physiological control over buoyancy as declining growth is accompanied by increasing sinking rates, where the frustule acts as ballast. Increased mucous secretion in conjunction with the cell protuberances characteristic of bloom diatoms leads to entanglement and aggregate formation during sinking; the sticky aggregates scavenge mineral and other particles during descent which further accelerates the sinking rate. Such diatom flocs will have sinking rates of 100 m d-1 or more. This is corroborated by recent observations of mass phytoplankton sedimentation to the deep sea. This mechanism would explain the origin of marine snow flocs containing diatoms in high productivity areas and also the well-known presence of a viable deep sea flora. That mortality is high in such a seeding strategy is not surprising. A number of species-specific variables pertaining to size, morphology, physiology, spore formation and frustule dissolution rate will determine the sinking behaviour and thus control positioning of resting stages in the water column or on the bottom. It is argued that sinking behaviour patterns will be environmentally selected and that some baffling aspects of diatom form and distribution can be explained in this light. Rapid diatom sedimentation is currently believed to be mediated by zooplankton faecal pellets, particularly those of copepods. This view is not supported by recently published observations. I speculate that copepod grazing actually retards rather than accelerates vertical flux, because faecal pellets tend to be recycled within the surface layer by the common herbivorous copepods. Egestion of undigested food by copepods during blooms acts as a storage mechanism, as ungrazed cells are likely to initiate mass precipitation and depletion of the surface layer in essential elements. Unique features of diatoms are discussed in the light of their possible evolution from resting spores of other algae. An evolutionary ecology of pelagic bloom diatoms is deduced from behavioural and morphological characteristics of meroplanktonic and tychopelagic forms. Other shell-bearing protistan plankters share common features with diatoms. Similar life-history patterns are likely to be present in species from all these groups. The geological significance of mass diatom sinking in rapidly affecting transfer of biogenic and mineral particles to the sea floor is pointed out.  相似文献

Sewage sludge from four publicly-owned treatment works was sampled and characterized in terms of parameters affecting transport at the 106-mile deep ocean disposal site as part of the US Environmental Protection Agency's site monitoring programme. Samples from treatment plants in Passaic Valley, Rahway, and Elizabeth, New Jersey and New York City were characterized in terms of dynamic size distribution, suspended solids and density. the transport characteristics of sludge particles were measured using a 2 metre computer-interfaced laboratory settling column. Experiments were conducted at constant salinity (35 ppt) while varying hydrodynamic mixing, sludge type and concentration using a modified factorial experimental design. Hydrodynamic power dissipation was varied so that the vertical dispersion and rms fluid shear rate ranged between 0-6 cm2S-1 and 0-30s-1 respectively. Results indicate that at least 80% of suspended sludge particles will eventually settle under mixed conditions. the average settling velocities ranged between 0.05-4.05 × 10-3 cm s-1. Shear rates above 15 s-1 inhibited sludge settling due to aggregate breakup and boundary effects, but at a lower shear rate, differential settling and fluid shear were the dominant transport mechanisms. Sludge dilution (1/500-1/5000) had a limited effect on the settling rate. Results from this study can be used to calibrate particle transport models to determine the fate of sludge disposed at an ocean disposal site.  相似文献

Stratification and Circulation in a Shallow Turbid Waterbody   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Shallow waterbodies are often assumed to be well mixed in the vertical. However, when they are characterised by high turbidity levels, absoption of solar heating within a relatively thin surface layer can produce thermal stratification. Results from an intensive monitoring program have been combined with three-dimensional circulation modelling to examine the diurnal stratification cycles in a small turbid waterbody. The waterbody, known as Rushy Billabong, is located in southeastern Australia and its high turbidity coupled with forcing by wind and solar radiation resulted in regular diurnal cycles of stratification and overturning. Under conditions of light wind and high solar radiation, the model results were generally consistent with the observed temperature field. However, under stronger winds, preferential cooling and sinking of shallow water around the edge of the lake began to contribute significantly to the interior stratification. Model estimates then became more sensitive to the detailed bathymetry and the choice of turbulence parameterisation. The level of stratification is also shown to influence the circulation in the billabong by trapping the wind-driven flow near the surface. Insights provided by the observations and modelling may have broader implications for the management of small turbid systems such as settling ponds, aquaculture ponds, and some natural wetlands.  相似文献

Determination of low molecular weight carbohydrates in marine environments indicated that 1-O--D-galactosylglycerol, 6-O--D-galactosyl-1-O--D-galacto-sylglycerol, sucrose, laminaribiose and laminaritriose are widely distributed in seawaters, suspended and sinking particles, and sediments in coastal as well as in deep-sea waters [e.g. Mikawa Bay and Sagami Bay, Kumano Nada (offshore Japan), and northwest North Pacific Ocean, Bering Sea and Antarctic Ocean: collections during 1978–1984]. Identification of these glycosylglycerols and oligosaccharides in algal cells such as a flagellate (Olisthodisus luteus), blue-green algae (e.g.Trichodesmium sp.) and a diatom (Reptocylindrus denicus) strongly suggests that these sugars are photosynthetically produced by algae in the euphotic zone and are then rapidly transported to the deep sea as sinking particles which can be collected by sediment-trap experiments. The rapid decay rate of low molecular weight carbohydrates by microorganisms suggests that the transported sugars provide energy substrates for microorganisms living in the deep sea. Please address all requests for reprints to Dr. Handa at Nagoya University  相似文献

A quasi-stationary model of vertical distribution of concentration of suspended particular matter in the bottom layer of 1D open channel with a sloped bottom and varying free surface slope is discussed. The model proceeds from the balance between the turbulent diffusion and settling with the buoyancy flux effects on the medium turbulence neglected. The model outcome is formulated in the form of an analytic formula for the vertical distribution of concentration. It is shown that the derived formula embraces two basic types of vertical distribution of concentration, one with a monotonic decrease of concentration gradient and the other with a gradient maximum (lutocline) located at some distance from the bottom. The first distribution type realizes for a relatively large settling velocity or low intensity of turbulence and the second type for a small settling velocity or high intensity of turbulence. The skill of the model to mimic realistic situations is demonstrated on data measured in the Jiaojiang Estuary (China).  相似文献

The influence of turbulence on the settling velocity of small particles remains an inconclusive research subject. Both enhanced and retarded particle settling compared to quiescent settling have been reported in previous literature, and several theories have been proposed. Among the mechanisms that account for reduced settling velocities in turbulence, the loitering effect is an important one that generally exists in various conditions. This study focuses on an analytical prediction of reduced particle settling velocities due to the loitering effect. By considering the velocity autocorrelation function as a step function analogous to the free path theory, and using a modified integral time scale to capture the essence of the loitering effect, an analytical expression is derived for predicting the reduction in particle settling velocities in turbulent flows. Calculation results of the expression are then examined by comparing with the results of a random walk model, direct numerical simulations that conditionally captured the reduction of particle settling velocities due to the loitering effect, and several representative experiments. Major possible influencing factors on the prediction of the analytical expression and applicable conditions of the expression are then further discussed. The proposed analytical expression is shown to be suitable for predicting the reduced settling velocities of small particles with relatively weak inertia in turbulent flows and could provide a reasonable explanation for reported cases in which small to moderate reductions in particle settling velocities were observed.

Abstract

This study investigates the distributions and enrichments of trace metals in suspended and sinking particulate matter from southern East China Sea (ECS) north of Taiwan during the period April 1992 to April 1993. According to these results, concentration of suspended particulate matter in the inner shelf of southern China Sea, the upwellinginfluenced shelf break, and in Kuroshio water are 1.30 (surface)–4.2 (bottom) mg1?1, ca. 0.4 mg1?1 and 0.1–0.2 mg1?1, respectively, reflecting various influences of terrestrial inputs. A benthic nepheloid layer (BNL), apparently owing to resuspension of local and/or remote bottom sediments, formed over the shelf region. Temporal variations in trace metal contents and enrichments in suspended matter from the shelf region reflect the variation of metal inputs from Chinese rivers, particularly from the Changjiang runoff. the enriched metals are more likely to be derived from anthropogenic input, rather than from biological accumulation. in addition, a decrease in metal contents and an increase in salinity confirm the transport of suspended particulate metals from the East China Sea shelf to the open ocean. the feature of metal plume in the intermediate layer (550–800m) of Kuroshio water also verifies this occurrence. Moreover, the sinking particles collected from a sediment trap on the upper slope are relatively enriched in lithogenic matter and trace metals, suggesting the deposit of anthropogenic metals in the slope area.  相似文献

Impact of osmolytes on buoyancy of marine phytoplankton   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Marine phytoplanktonic cells can achieve neutral buoyancy only if the excess density of their relatively heavy structural materials (proteins, carbohydrates, silicate) is compensated for by the incorporation of materials that have densities less than seawater. We have calculated densities and osmotic concentrations for several marine algae, based on published values of structural materials and concentrations of inorganic ions and other osmolytes. The calculations, incorporating the partial molal volume, molecular mass, concentrations and osmotic coefficients, indicate that most published listings of intracellular osmolytes in marine algae are insufficient to provide the turgor known to exist. Similarly, the density of phytoplanktonic cells, calculated on the basis of known or estimated concentrations of cellular components, generally exceeds the density of seawater, which would cause negative buoyancy (sinking) throughout. We use models of osmotic concentration and cellular density in which we supplement known concentrations of osmolytes with proxy osmolytes. In particular, concentrations of some 100 mol m-3 of quaternary ammonium derivatives can explain the deficits of both osmotic concentration and buoyancy.  相似文献

Interdisciplinary research in hydraulics and ecology for river management and restoration must integrate processes that occur over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales, which presents a challenge to ecohydraulics modelers. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models are being more widely used to determine flow fields for ecohydraulics applications. In the Upper Mississippi River (UMR), the mussel dynamics model was developed as a tool for management and conservation of freshwater mussels (Unionidae), which are benthic organisms, imperiled in North America, that are inextricably linked with the hydraulics of river flow. We updated the juvenile dispersal component of the mussel dynamics model by using stochastic Lagrangian particle tracking in a three dimensional flow field output from CFD models of reaches in the UMR. We developed a methodological framework to integrate hydrodynamic data with the mussel dynamics model, and we demonstrate the use of the juvenile dispersal model employed within the methodological framework in two reaches of the UMR. The method was used to test the hypothesis that impoundment affects the relationship of some hydraulic parameters with juvenile settling distribution. Simulation results were consistent with this hypothesis, and the relationships of bed shear stress and Froude number with juvenile settling were altered by impoundment most likely through effects on local hydraulics. The methodological framework is robust, integrates Eulerian and Lagrangian reference frameworks, and incorporates processes over a wide range of temporal and spatial scales, from watershed scale hydrologic processes (decades), to reach scale (km) processes that occur over hours or days, and turbulent processes on spatial scales of meter to millimeter and times scales of seconds. The methods are presently being used to assess the impacts of pre- and early post-settlement processes on mussel distributions, including the effects of bed shear stress, and the sensitivity of the location of the host fish when juveniles excyst, on juvenile settling distribution.  相似文献

A mooring system consisting of an in situ fluorometer at a depth of 50 m and a time-series sediment trap at a depth of 110 m was deployed at the sediment trap site (70°11.536'S; 24°18.679'E; water depth: 300 m) in Breid Bay, Antarctica in austral summer from 28 December 1985 to 13 February 1986. Sinking particles, consisting of diatoms (mainly Thalassiosira antarctica), were analyzed for organic materials, stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes. Vertical fluxes of organic carbon and nitrogen were determined to be within the ranges of 12.3 to 116 mg C m-2 d-1 and 1.79 to 15.4 mg N m-2 d-1, respectively, with maxima in the middle of January 1986, after which time the organic carbon and nitrogen fluxes tended to decrease with a steep gradient. High values of 13C were found in the organic matter of the sinking particles collected before the middle of January, indicating that the organic matter was derived from the diatoms in the logarithmic phase of their growth. Increased abundance of glucose was found in the water-extractable carbohydrate, which was one of the sinking particles collected in the middle of January. This fact clearly indicated that the diatoms were no longer in the growth phase but rather in the stationary phase, because reserved glucan as well as various cellular organic materials were reportedly accumulated within the algal cells in the stationary phase. Fifteen species of protein amino acids with trace amounts of -alanine, -aminobutyric acid and ornithine were found in the sinking particles upon acid hydrolysis, but the amino acid composition of these samples had not been affected much by biological agents. The essential amino acid index was calculated for the sinking particles collected in the course of the sediment trap experiment. The indices obtained indicated that the sinking particles collected in Breid Bay were more ecologically significant than the sinking and suspended particles from deep waters.  相似文献

The fate of reactive tracers is often modelled by depth-averaged equations. When integrating the depth-resolved equations, it appears that the term describing the settling of particles is dependent on the concentration just above the bottom. Because in a depth-averaged framework this quantity is not available, the settling term needs to be parameterised. The most natural choice is to make the settling flux dependent on the average concentration. This approximation is acceptable if the water column is well mixed, but these conditions are not necessarily met in real applications. Therefore, this study aims at assessing and understanding the error made by using a depth-averaged model in a range of realistic conditions. For the definition of these conditions, typical values for the Scheldt Estuary and the Dutch-Belgian coast were taken. The realistic inspiration for the reactive tracer in this study is the fecal bacterium Escherichia coli, whose own dynamics are characterised by settling and gradual decay by mortality. In an attempt to understand the relative importance of several factors like settling, mortality, mixing and stratification on the error made by a depth-averaged approach, a number of simplified test cases were investigated. It follows that, as expected, the error is acceptable if the situation is mixing-dominated. However, the effect of mortality and stratification was less obvious in advance. For instance, it appeared that errors can also be significant if settling and mortality have the same characteristic timescales. Stratification often has the effect to increase the error made by the depth-averaged model.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted in order to characterize the distributions of concentrations of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in water columns of lakes and reservoirs. The experiments, in a reduced model of the water column, used a set of oscillating grids. Runs were done with particles denser than water as well as with light particles. The results were in good agreement with analytical solutions for steady-state, and non-steady-state conditions. An approximate analytical solution was derived and found to be in agreement with the full solution. The threshold for resuspension was measured, and characterized in terms of a modified Shields parameter, which is appropriate to a zero-shear environment. All experiments showed that the distribution of SPM exhibited a layer near the bottom that is thought to be analogous to the benthic nepheloid layer (BNL) observed in larger lakes. The thickness of the nepheloid layer increases with the turbulence intensity.  相似文献

Periphyton developments in water distribution canals induce major disturbances for system management, such as clogging problems when fixed algae are detached. Periphyton models can be used to simulate and improve canal management. The purpose of this paper is to review the periphyton models which integrate a hydrodynamic effect, and to discuss their relevance for application in open-channels. Afterwards, a new model of periphyton detachment that integrates the hydrodynamic factor is proposed. An experiment in semi-real conditions is performed to compare periphyton development under four different hydrodynamic regimes. The proposed model is compared on experimental results with two existing models. The new model reproduces well the periphyton dynamics in the four canals simultaneously.  相似文献

● A new model for bloom control in open land scape water was constructed. ● It considers the effects of temperature and light on algae growth. ● It describes threshold curve of nitrogen, phosp horus and hydraulic retention time. ● Light and temperature dependent growth para meters of typical algae were obtained. The risks posed by algal blooms caused by nitrogen and phosphorus in reclaimed water used in urban water landscapes need to be carefully controlled. In this study, the combined effects of the nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations and the light intensity and temperature on the specific growth rates of algae were determined using Monod, Steele, and Arrhenius models, then an integrated algal growth model was developed. The algae biomass, nitrogen concentration, and phosphorus concentration mass balance equations were used to establish a new control model describing the nitrogen and phosphorus concentration and hydraulic retention time thresholds for algal blooms. The model parameters were determined by fitting the models to data acquired experimentally. Finally, the control model and numerical simulations for six typical algae and mixed algae under standard conditions were used to determine nitrogen/phosphorus concentration and hydraulic retention time thresholds for landscape water to which reclaimed water is supplied (i.e., for a reclaimed water landscape).  相似文献

A computer simulation model of oceanic Langmuir circulations illustrates the role of these vortical water movements as physical forcing mechanisms affecting the horizontal and vertical distributions of planktonic organisms. The diel migration of omnivorous and herbivorous zooplankton (approximately by literature values for the swimming speeds of Meganyctiphanes norvegica and Calanus finmarchicus, respectively) and the sinking of phytoplankton interact with the Langmuir cells, resulting in a spatially heterogeneous community. The patchy distributions, in turn, affect the prey—predator interactions in this simple food web. Situations involving threshold and non-threshold feeding strategies as well as constant and changing circulations are investigated. The simulations are restricted to twilight and nocturnal events.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal distribution of the copepodEurytemora affinis hirundoides (Nordquist, 1888) in the Gironde estuary, southwest France, was investigated in 1976, and between 1981 and 1983. The distribution pattern of the population bore a clear relationship to the patterns of water circulation and transport of particulate matter. Laboratory experiments suggested thatE. affinis hirundoides is incapable of autonomous displacement against the direction of general circulation and behaves as passive particles. A major problem faced by species living in estuaries is that of the maintenance of endemic populations. Some authors have suggested that behavioural responses may play an important role in minimising population losses. Our study indicated that hydrodynamic processes are sufficient to explain the distribution and retention ofE. affinis hirundoides, whose populations are retained in the estuary in the same manner as the suspended sediment. Since the outflow of particulate matter from the Gironde estuary to the sea is very sporadic, we hypothesize that most of the production ofE. affinis hirundoides remains within the estuary, and does not fertilize the continental shelf, at least not in the form of particulate organic matter.  相似文献
