This paper investigates and compares the performances of polylactic acid (PLA)/kenaf (PLA-K) and PLA/rice husk (PLA-RH) composites in terms of biodegradability, mechanical and thermal properties. Composites with natural fiber weight content of 20% with fiber sizes of less than 100 μm were produced for testing and characterization. A twin-screw extrusion was used to compound PLA and natural fibers, and extruded composites were injection molded to test samples. Flexural and Izod impact test, TGA, soil burial test and SEM were used to investigate properties. All results were compared to a pure PLA matrix sample. The flexural modulus of the PLA increased with the addition of natural fibers, while the flexural strength decreased. The highest impact strength (34 J m−1), flexural modulus (4.5 GPa) and flexural strength (90 MPa) were obtained for the composite made of PLA/kenaf (PLA-K), which means kenaf natural fibers are potential to be used as an alternative filler to enhance mechanical properties. On the other hand PLA-RH composite exhibits lower mechanical properties. The impact strength of PLA has decreased when filled with natural fibers; this decrease is more pronounced in the PLA-RH composite. In terms of thermal stability it has been found that the addition of natural fibers decreased the thermal stability of virgin PLA and the decrement was more prominent in the PLA-RH composite. Biodegradability of the composites slightly increased and reached 1.2 and 0.8% for PLA-K and PLA-RH respectively for a period of 90 days. SEM micrographs showed poor interfacial between the polymer matrix and natural fibers.  相似文献

Investigations have continued for production high performance agro-based composites using environmentally acceptable approaches. This study examines the role of adding amide-containing biopolymers during synthesis of urea–formaldehyde (UF) on properties of adhesive produced, especially its adhesion potential. The environmental performance of UF-resin synthesized in the presence of modified amide-containing biopolymer was evaluated by evaluating the free-HCHO of both adhesive (during processing) and of the eventual engineered composite product. Also, the benefits of this synthesis-modified adhesive in enhancing the bondability of sugar-cane fibers used in engineered composite panels was evaluated and compared to using UF-resin. The results obtained show that, static bending of the produced composites varied from 27.7 to 33.13 N/mm2 of modulus of rupture (MOR) and from 2860 to 3374 N/mm2 of Modulus of Elasticity (MOE); while for internal bond (IB) it’s varied from 0.64 to 0.866 N/mm2. Based on the ANSI and EN Standards modified UF-based agro composites produced meet the performance requirements for high grade particleboards with respect to static bending strength. These agro-based composite also tested out as having free-HCHO values of ~13 mg/100 g board.  相似文献

In this research, hybrid composite materials were prepared from combination of oil palm Empty fruit bunches (EFB) fibre and jute fibre as reinforcement, epoxy as polymer matrix. This study intended to investigate the effect of jute fiber hybridization and different layering pattern on the physical properties of oil palm EFB-Epoxy composites. Water absorption and thickness swelling test reveal that hybrid composite shows a moderate water absorption which is 11.20% for hybrid EFB/Jute/EFB composite and 6.08% for hybrid Jute/EFB/Jute composite. The thickness swelling and water absorption of the hybrid composites slightly increased as the layering pattern of hybrid composites changed. Hybrid composites are more water resistance and dimensional stable compare to the pure EFB composites. This is attributed to the more hydrophilic nature of EFB composites. Hybridization of oil palm EFB composites with jute fibres can improve the dimensional stability and density of pure EFB and Jute fibre reinforced composites has higher density of 1.2 g/cm3 compared to all other composites.  相似文献

The fluorescent lamp recycling sector is growing considerably in Europe due to increasingly strict regulations aimed at inciting the consumption of low energy light bulbs and their end-of-life management. Chemical risks were assessed in fluorescent lamp recycling facilities by field measurement surveys in France, highlighting that occupational exposure and pollutant levels in the working environment were correlated with the main recycling steps and processes. The mean levels of worker exposure are 4.4 mg/m3, 15.4 μg/m3, 14.0 μg/m3, 247.6 μg/m3, respectively, for total inhalable dust, mercury, lead and yttrium. The mean levels of airborne pollutants are 3.1 mg/m3, 9.0 μg/m3, 9.0 μg/m3, 219.2 μg/m3, respectively, for total inhalable dust, mercury, lead and yttrium. The ranges are very wide. Surface samples from employees’ skin and granulometric analysis were also carried out. The overview shows that all the stages and processes involved in lamp recycling are concerned by the risk of hazardous substances penetrating into the bodies of employees, although exposure of the latter varies depending on the processes and tasks they perform. The conclusion of this study strongly recommends the development of a new generation of processes in parallel with more information sharing and regulatory measures.  相似文献

Chitosan (0.1–1%, w/w), dissolved in 2% acetic acid solution, was added into 1% methylcellulose (MC)-based formulation containing 0.5% vegetable oil, 0.25% glycerol and 0.025% Tween?80. Films were prepared by casting. Puncture strength (PS), puncture deformation (PD), viscoelasticity coefficient and water vapour permeability (WVP) of the films were measured. The PS value of 312 N/mm was observed for MC-based films containing 0.25% chitosan. Values of PD, viscoelasticity coefficient and WVP of these films were 5.0 mm, 44.1%, and 6.0 g mm/m2 day kPa, respectively. The MC-based films containing 0.25% chitosan were also exposed to gamma radiation (0.5–50 kGy). The PS of the treated films decreased significantly from 312 at 0 kGy to 201 N/mm when treated at a dose of 50 kGy. However, WVP values were not affected by increasing irradiation the dose used. The Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy supported the molecular interactions due to addition of chitosan in MC-based films. Thermo gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetric experiments showed that thermal properties of the films were significantly improved by chitosan loading. Surface topography of the films was studied by scanning electron microscopy and found rougher due to chitosan addition.  相似文献

The interactive effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and influent chemical oxygen demand (CODin) on the performance of an up-flow anaerobic sludge fixed film (UASFF) bioreactor treating palm oil mill effluent (POME) was studied. Anaerobic digestion of POME was modeled and analyzed with two variables i.e. HRT and CODin. Experiments were conducted based on a general factorial design and analyzed using response surface methodology (RSM). The region of exploration for digestion of POME was taken as the area enclosed by HRT (1–6 days) and CODin (5260–34,725 mg/l) boundaries. Eight dependent parameters were either directly measured or calculated as response. Increase in the variables resulted in decrease in COD removal efficiency, solid retention time (SRT) and sludge retention factor (SRF) and increase of COD removal rate, volatile fatty acid to alkalinity ratio (VFA/Alk), CO2 percentage in biogas and methane production rate. The value of the maximum specific microbial growth rate (μm) determined through the equation that correlated organic loading rate (OLR) and μ (calculated by quadratic model for SRF) was found to be 0.153 d?1. This value was close to that obtained using Chen and Hashimoto kinetic equation (0.207 d?1) in a previous study. The present study provides valuable information about interrelations of quality and process parameters in POME digestion using a UASFF bioreactor.  相似文献

A novel fluorine-containing copolymer surfactant was synthesized via free radical copolymerization from maleic anhydride and rapeseed oil firstly, and then followed by an esterification reaction with dodecafluoro heptanol. The reaction progresses were monitored on-line by FTIR and the copolymerization was characterized by molecular weight (GPC) analysis. Simultaneously, the surface tension and critical micelle concentration (CMC) together with the biodegradability of the fluorine-containing copolymer surfactant were investigated in detail. The results indicate that this fluorine-containing surfactant with Mw of 66000 g/ mol and Mn of 38800 g/mol shows a strong surface tension lowering ability, the CMC is 0.1 g/L, the surface tension value at the CMC (γCMC) is 22.5 mN m−1 and less than the corresponding copolymeric hydrocarbon surfactant; the evaluation of biodegradability indicates that the biological respiration curve of the fluorine-containing copolymer surfactant with concentration of 1000 mg/L is above the endogenous respiration curve; the BOD5/COD value is higher than 0.45; the COD and TOC removal ratios after 5 days of biodegradation reach 91.0 and 89.4%, respectively, showing good biodegradability and environmental-friendly feature.  相似文献

The kinetic behavior of polyesterification of the alkyd resins synthesized using glycerol and phthalic anhydride modified with oleic acid from the palm oil at temperatures between 120 and 240 °C was studied. Three alkyds having oleic acid contents of 28, 40, and 65% were prepared by employing fatty acid method. The extent of the polyesterification reaction and average degree of polymerization were monitored by determining the acid number of the aliquot of the reaction mixture at various intervals of time and by measuring the volume of water evolved. Kinetic studies revealed that initial reaction rates followed a second-order kinetics up to certain limit and thereafter deviations were observed. The extent of reaction varied from 77.4 to 86.3% before deviation for all the three samples and exhibited a considerable degree of conversion. The second-order rate constants calculated from the linear part were found to be of the order of 10−5 g (mg KOH)−1 min−1. Molecular weight of the alkyd samples was determined by GPC; number average molecular weight of the alkyds ranged from 980 to 2,070.  相似文献

A utilization way of herb residues is designed to convert herb residues to gas fuel in industrial-scale by a circulating fluidized bed gasifier in this paper. The product gas is used in the production of Chinese medicine, and the heat of the flue gas from the boiler can be used in herb residues drying to realize the energy recycling and no herb residues discharge. The gasification characteristics of herb residues in the circulating fluidized bed of 300 kg/h were investigated for about 200 h. The results indicated that the gas composition and tar yield were affected by biomass flow rate, equivalence ratio (ER), moisture content and char circulating. The lower heating value of product gas was 4–5 MJ/m3 using herb residues as feedstock. When mean biomass flow rate was at 5.5 kg m?2 s?1 and ER at 0.35, the product gas reached a good condition with lower heating value of 4.89 MJ/m3 and cold gas efficiency of 62.36%. When the moisture content changed from 12.5% to 18.7%, the concentrations of H2, CO and CO2 changed from 4.66% to 6.92%, 11.23% to 10.15%, and 16.55% to 17.82% respectively, and the tar content in gas decreased from 15.1 g/m3 to 14.4 g/m3 when the moisture content increased from 12.5% to 15.4%. There are metal oxides in the ash of herb residues, especially CaO, MgO, K2O, Al2O3, and Fe2O3 which have obvious function on tar catalytic decomposition. The ash that attaches to the char particles can decrease the tar yield and improve the quality of gas after returning to the gasifier.  相似文献

Volatile fatty acid (VFA) separation from synthetic VFA solutions and leachate was investigated via the use of a membrane contactor. NaOH was used as a stripping solution to provide constant concentration gradient of VFAs in both sides of a membrane. Mass flux (12.23 g/m2 h) and selectivity (1.599) observed for acetic acid were significantly higher than those reported in the literature and were observed at feed pH of 3.0, flow rate of 31.5 ± 0.9 mL/min, and stripping solution concentration of 1.0 N. This study revealed that the flow rate, stripping solution strength, and feed pH affect the mass transfer of VFAs through the PTFE membrane. Acetic and propionic acid separation performances observed in the present study provided a cost effective and environmental alternative due to elimination of the use of extractants.  相似文献

Sorbents synthesized from various types of ash (coal fly ash, coal bottom ash, oil palm ash, and incinerator ash) for flue gas desulfurization were investigated. The sorbents were prepared by mixing the ashes with calcium oxide and calcium sulfate using the water hydration method. The effects of various sorbent preparation variables, such as the hydration period, the ratio of calcium oxide to ash, and the amount of calcium sulfate, on the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET)-specific surface area of the resulting sorbent were studied using a two-level full factorial design. The surface area of the sorbents obtained range from 15.4 to 122.1m2/g. Regression models were developed to correlate the significant variables to the surface area of the sorbents. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the model was significant at a confidence level of 95%. It was found that apart from all the individual variables studied, interactions between variables also exerted a significant influence on the surface area of the sorbent. From the activity test results, it was found that sorbents prepared from coal fly ash and oil palm ash have the highest SO2 absorption capacity. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis showed that the sorbent was composed of a compound with a high structural porosity, while an X-ray diffraction spectrum showed that calcium aluminum silicate hydrate compounds are the main products of the hydration reaction.  相似文献

Linseed oil-based polymers have been synthesized via cationic and thermal polymerization and characterized through various techniques, such as SEM, DMA, DSC and TGA. The morphology of the polymer samples after extraction reveals the smooth structure of the polymer matrix. With an increase in oil content, the morphology is observed to be more loosely bound. With an increase in linseed oil content in the samples, the room temperature storage modulus (E′) varies from 10.4 × 107 to 1.8 × 107 Pa. The glass transition temperatures measured through DMA of the cationic samples ranges from 70 to −6 °C and the crosslink densities range from 18.4 × 103 to 3.4 × 103 mol/m3. The glass transition temperatures of the thermal samples range from 106 to −4 °C and the crosslink densities range from 7.7 × 103 to 2.4 × 103 mol/m3. The TGA results show three stages of degradation of the polymer samples and it is also revealed that these polymers are stable up to 200 °C, showing negligible decomposition.  相似文献

For characterisation of landscapes in north-eastern Estoniaaffected by alkaline oil shale fly ash and cement dust the zonation-method based on average annual (C y) and short-termconcentrations of pollutants in the air was used, as well as on deposition loads of dust and Ca2+. In the overground layer of atmosphere the zones with different air pollution loads were distinguished. A comparative analysis of pollution zones characteristics and biomonitoring data revealed that for sensitive lichen the dangerous level of alkaline dust in the air, introducingthe degradation of Sphagnum sp. at the level of C y of dust 10–20 g m-3 and at 0.5–1 hr maximums 100–150 g m-3. For Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) this limited concentration (decline of growth parameters) of cement dust is correspondingly following: 30–50 g m-3 and 150–500 g m-3, in case of fly ash the limit level of C y amounting 100 g m-3. Daily deposition load of Ca2+ should not exceed approximately 4.5–15 mg m-2 for lichen; for conifers the harmful pollution load is higher – >22 mg m-2.  相似文献

This work presents the use of two composts as filter media for the treatment by biofiltration of odors emitted during the aerobic composting of a mixture containing sewage sludge and yard waste. The chemical analysis of the waste gas showed that the malodorous compounds at trace level were the reduced sulfur compounds (RSCs) which were dimethyl sulfide (Me2S), methanethiol (MeSH) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Laboratory tests for biofiltration treatment of RSCs were performed in order to compare the properties of two filter media, consisted of a mature compost with yard waste (YW) and a mixture of mature compost with sewage sludge and yard waste (SS/YW). The maximum elimination capacity (EC) values obtained with the YW mature compost as packing material were 12.5 mg m?3 h?1 for H2S, 7.9 mg m?3 h?1 for MeSH and 34 mg m?3 h?1 for Me2S, and the removal efficiency decreased in the order of: H2S > MeSH > Me2S. Moreover, the YW compost filter medium had a better behavior than the filter medium based on SS/YW in terms of acclimation of the microbial communities and moisture content. According to these results, a YW mature compost as packing material for an industrial biofilter were designed and this industrial biofilter was found effective under specified conditions (without inoculation and addition of water). The results showed that the maximum EC value of RSCs was 935 mg m?3 h?1 (100% removal efficiency, RE) for an inlet loads (IL) between 0 and 1000 mg m?3 h?1. Thus, YW compost medium was proven efficient for biofiltration of RSCs both at laboratory and industrial scale.  相似文献

This study presents a novel thermal plasma melting technique for neutralizing and recycling municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) ash residues. MSWI ash residues were converted into water-quenched vitrified slag using plasma vitrification, which is environmentally benign. Slag is adopted as a raw material in producing porous materials for architectural and decorative applications, eliminating the problem of its disposal. Porous materials are produced using water-quenched vitrified slag with Portland cement and foaming agent. The true density, bulk density, porosity and water absorption ratio of the foamed specimens are studied here by varying the size of the slag particles, the water-to-solid ratio, and the ratio of the weights of the core materials, including the water-quenched vitrified slag and cement. The thermal conductivity and flexural strength of porous panels are also determined. The experimental results show the bulk density and the porosity of the porous materials are 0.9–1.2 g cm?3 and 50–60%, respectively, and the pore structure has a closed form. The thermal conductivity of the porous material is 0.1946 W m?1 K?1. Therefore, the slag composite materials are lightweight and thermal insulators having considerable potential for building applications.  相似文献

A consortium of microorganisms from oil polluted wastewater sample was cultivated to promote polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) accumulation before subjecting the mixed cultures to sucrose density gradient ultracentrifugation. This resulted in the fractionation of the bacterial cells according to their physical features such as size, morphology and/or densities. An isolate was identified as Burkholderia sp. USM (JCM15050), which was capable of converting palm oil products [crude palm kernel oil (CPKO), palm olein (PO), palm kernel acid oil (PKAO), palm stearin (PS), crude palm oil (CPO), palm acid oil (PAO) and palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD)], fatty acids and various glycerol by-products into poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB)]. Up to 70 and 60 wt% of P(3HB) could be obtained when 0.5%(v/v) CPKO and glycerol was fed, respectively. Among the various fatty acids tested, lauric acid followed by oleic acid and myristic acid gave the best cell growth and PHA accumulation. Compared to Cupriavidus necator H16, the present isolate showed better ability to grow on and produce PHA from various glycerol by-products generated by the palm oil industry. This study demonstrated for the first time an isolate that has the potential to utilize palm oil and glycerol derivatives for the biosynthesis of PHA.  相似文献

A series of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), all containing 1% nucleating agent but varying in structure, were melt-processed into films through single screw extrusion techniques. This series consisted of three polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and three polyhydroxybutyrate-valerate (PHBV) resins with varying valerate content. Processing parameters of temperature in the barrel (165–173 °C) and chill rolls (60 °C) were optimized to obtain cast films. The gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) results showed a loss of 8–19% of the polymer’s initial molecular weight due to extrusion processing. Modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) displayed glass transition temperatures of the films ranging from −4.6 to 6.7 °C depending on the amount of crystallinity in the film. DSC data were also used to calculate the percent crystallinity of each sample and slightly higher crystallinity was observed in the PHBV series of samples. X-ray diffraction patterns did not vary significantly for any of the samples and crystallinity was confirmed with X-ray data. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) verified the glass transition trends for the films from DSC while loss modulus (E′) reported at 20 °C showed that the PHBV (3,950–3,600 MPa) had the higher E′ values than the PHB (3,500–2,698 MPa) samples. The Young’s modulus values of the PHB and PHBV samples ranged from 700 to 900 MPa and 900 to 1,500 MPa, respectively. Polarized light microscopy images revealed gel particles in the films processed through single-screw extrusion, which may have caused diminished Young’s modulus and tensile strength of these films. The PHBV film samples exhibited the greatest barrier properties to oxygen and water vapor when compared to the PHB film samples. The average oxygen transmission rate (OTR) and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) for the PHBV samples was 247 (cc-mil/m2-day) and 118 (g-mil/m2-day), respectively; while the average OTR and WVTR for the PHB samples was 350 (cc-mil/m2-day) and 178 (g-mil/m2-day), respectively. Biodegradation data of the films in the marine environment demonstrated that all PHA film samples achieved a minimum of 70% mineralization in 40 days when run in accordance with ASTM 6691. For static and dynamic incubation experiments in seawater, microbial action resulting in weight loss as a function of time showed all samples to be highly biodegradable and correlated with the ASTM 6691 biodegradation data.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted in an annular flume using Hibernia crude oil to determine: (1) the critical shear stress (τc) necessary to remove stranded oil from a surface by resuspension and (2) the effect of suspended sediment concentrations (SSCs) on the oil erosion processes. Two types of erosion were evident: Type I––solution and erosion of soluble aromatics; and Type II––mass erosion of visible droplets. In particulate free seawater at 13 °C, the Type II erosion threshold τcII is 5.0 Pa. This is equivalent to a mean current velocity (Uy) of 0.55 m s−1. At Uy values <0.55 m s−1, Type I erosion occurred as shown by the increase of oil concentrations without visible erosion of the oil surface. Temperature has a strong control on the threshold and rate of oil erosion: the threshold for Type I erosion at 4 °C was higher and erosion rate lower than at 13 °C. No Type II erosion was observed at 4 °C. SSCs also affects the entrainment of oil. Oil erosion was most efficient at moderate SSCs. At very high SSCs, turbulence suppression and drag reduction became effective and oil erosion rate decreased. SSC at 200–250 mg l−1 were observed to give maximum erosion efficiency and is therefore suggested as the optimal concentration for erosion and elimination of heavy crude oil at a water temperature of 13 °C.  相似文献

This study examines the use of fly ash, a thermal power plant waste, and the effect of diatomite, a fossil algae type, on waste-based geopolymers in the production of sustainable geopolymer binders. The effects of 1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and, 5% diatomite substitution on waste-based mortars were investigated. Mortars containing 10% and 12% Na+ by weight based on the binder material were cured at 75 °C for 48 h. The flexural and compressive strength, abrasion resistance, determination of ultrasonic pulse velocity, and resistance to high temperatures of geopolymer mortar samples were investigated. In addition, FESEM images, EDX and XRD analyses of geopolymer mortar samples were made, and their microstructures were examined. 2% diatomite substitution increased flexural and compressive strength. In parallel with this situation, it was concluded that the abrasion resistance and ultrasonic pulse velocity of the geopolymer mortar with 2% diatomite substituted increased. In addition, it has been shown in FESEM images that the microstructure has a denser morphology. All geopolymer mortars lost strength after the high temperatures of 300 °C, 600 °C and 900 °C. As a result, it was concluded that diatomite containing highly reactive silica can be used in geopolymer systems.

Membrane separation has been widely used for various applications including microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), and nanofiltration (NF) processes in the fields of biomedicine, food, and water purification. In this work, a facile synthesis of new polyamide thin-film composite nanofiltration membranes (NF-TFC) for water purification was described. The polyamide thin film was deposed over a synthetic cellulose acetate (CA) support by interfacial polymerization method. 1,3 cyclohexane bis (methylamine) (CHMA) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) were used as monomers. The membranes were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), water uptake, porosity, contact angle, water permeability and rejection towards specific salt and dye molecules. The effect of the variation of the CHMA concentration (0.2–2 wt.%) on the morphology, porosity, water permeation and rejection properties of the prepared membranes was studied. SEM results displayed the growth of the membrane thickness when the CHMA concentration increased from 0.2 to 2 wt.%. The strong adhesion between the cellulose acetate substrate and the polyamide layer explained by the formation of the polyamide film in the substrate surface and inside the pores. The water permeability varied from 36.02 to 17.09 L h?1 m?2 bar?1. The salt rejection of Na2SO4 and NaCl increased from 9 to 68% and from 38.41% to 89.4%, respectively, when the CHMA concentration was changed from 0.2 to 2 wt.%. The prepared membranes were further applied successfully for the removal of malachite green and congo red. The results indicated that the maximum rejection reached 89% and 85% for malachite green and congo red, respectively.
