Abstract

Two biofilters were operated to treat a waste gas stream intended to simulate off-gases generated during the manufacture of reformulated paint. The model waste gas stream consisted of a five-component solvent mixture containing acetone (450 ppmv), methyl ethyl ketone (12 ppmv), toluene (29 ppmv), ethylbenzene (10 ppmv), and p-xylene (10 ppmv). The two biofilters, identical in construction and packed with a polyurethane foam support medium, were inoculated with an enrichment culture derived from compost and then subjected to different loading conditions during the startup phase of operation. One biofilter was subjected to intermittent loading conditions with contaminants supplied only 8 hr/day to simulate loading conditions expected at facilities where manufacturing operations are discontinuous. The other biofilter was subjected to continuous contaminant loading during the initial start period, and then was switched to intermittent loading conditions. Experimental results demonstrate that both startup strategies can ultimately achieve high contaminant removal efficiency (>99%) at a target contaminant mass loading rate of 80.3 g m?3 hr?1 and an empty bed residence time of 59 sec. The biofilter subjected to intermittent loading conditions at startup, however, took considerably longer to reach high performance. In both biofilters, ketone components (acetone and methyl ethyl ketone) were more rapidly degraded than aromatic hydrocarbons (toluene, ethylbenzene, and p-xylene). Scanning electron microscopy and plate count data revealed that fungi, as well as bacteria, populated the biofilters.  相似文献

The main research objective of this study is to enhance the removal of recalcitrant compounds that are not readily bioavailable due to limiting mass transfer rate between the liquid and gas phases. Four trickle-bed air biofilters (TBABs), loaded with pelletized diatomaceous earth support media, were run at an empty bed residence time (EBRT) of 120 sec. After an acclimation period at constant loading rate (LR) of n-hexane (13.2 g m?3 hr?1) and intermittent feeding of methanol, n-hexane influent LR was then increased in step-wise fashion to 47.7 g m?3 hr?1 for biofilters receiving acidic nutrients (pH 4), and to 36.3 g m?3 hr?1 for biofilters receiving nutrient at pH 7. The results have shown that for TBABs receiving nutrient at pH 4, greater elimination capacities were obtained as compared to TBABs working at pH 7. n-Hexane removal efficiency of more than 84% at LR up to 47.7 g m?3 hr?1 was obtained for pH 4 nutrient-fed biofilters, while for biofilters with nutrients fed at pH 7, the removal efficiency did not exceed 64% for n-hexane LR of 36.3 g m?3 hr?1. The microbial analysis revealed that no fungal community was detected in TBABs run at neutral pH. The fungi communities that were initially acclimating TBABs run at pH 4, namely, Aspergillus niger and Fusarium solani, were not detected at the end of the experiment, while Gibberella moniliformis (Fusarium verticillioides) genus became the dominant species. Gibberella moniliformis (Fusarium verticillioides) was present along all the biofilter media and sustained very high n-hexane elimination at steady-state condition.
Implications:With growing apprehension about sustainability and environmental protection, with limited resources available, and with the passage of the 1990 Amendments to the Clean Air Act, there is more need for using air pollution control techniques that are sound economically and proven environmentally friendly. Biofiltration systems, namely, trickle-bed air biofilters, were for decades recognized as efficient in treating air pollutants. Thus, the application of this technique over a wide industrial spectrum would certainly contribute to reduction of hazardous gas emissions.  相似文献

This study aimed to develop a biofilter packed only with fern chips for the removal of odorous compounds from recycled nylon melting operations. The fern chip biofilters could avoid the shortcomings of traditional media, such as compaction, drying, and breakdown, which lead to the performance failure of the biofilters. A pilot-scale biofilter consisting of an acrylic column (14 cm2?×?120 cm height) packed with fern chips to a volume of around 19.6 L was used for the test. Experimental results indicate that oxygen- and nitrogen-containing hydrocarbons as well as paraffins were major volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from thermal smelting of recycled nylon at 250 °C. With operation conditions of medium pH of 5.5–7.0, empty bed retention time (EBRT) of 6–12 sec, influent total hydrocarbon (THC) concentrations of 0.65–2.61 mg m?3, and volumetric organic loading of 0.05–0.85 g m?3 hr?1, the fern-chip-packed biofilter with nutrients of milk, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, and glucose could achieve an overall THC removal efficiency of around 80%. Burnt odor emitted from the smelting of the recycled nylon could be eliminated by the biofilter.

Implications: Biotreatment of contaminants in air streams offers an inexpensive and efficient alternative to conventional technologies. Biofiltration have a great potential for the degradation of gas-borne odorous compounds. THC removal efficiency of around 80% can be achieved. Burnt odor emitted from the smelting of the recycled nylon could be eliminated by the biofilter. This study provides an experimentally verified model for the design and operation of such biotreatment systems.  相似文献

Abstract

A pilot-scale rotating drum biofilter (RDB), which is a novel biofilter design that offers flexible flow-through configurations, was used to treat complex and variable volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, including shock loadings, emanating from paint drying operations at an Army ammunition plant. The RDB was seeded with municipal wastewater activated sludge. Removal efficiencies up to 86% and an elimination capacity of 5.3 g chemical oxygen demand (COD) m?3 · hr?1 were achieved at a filter-medium contact time of 60 sec. Efficiency increased at higher temperatures that promote higher biological activity, and decreased at lower pH, which dropped down to pH 5.5 possibly as a result of carbon dioxide and volatile fatty acid production and ammonia consumption during VOC degradation. In comparison, other studies have shown that a bench-scale RDB could achieve a removal efficiency of 95% and elimination capacity of 331 g COD m?3 · hr?1. Sustainable performance of the pilot-scale RDB was challenged by the intermittent nature of painting operations, which typically resulted in 3-day long shutdown periods when bacteria were not fed. This challenge was overcome by adding sucrose (2 g/L weekly) as an auxiliary substrate to sustain metabolic activity during shutdown periods.  相似文献

Abstract

This study aimed to develop a biofilter packed only with fern chips for the removal of airborne propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate (PGMEA). Fern chips could avoid the shortcomings of traditional media, such as compaction, drying, and breakdown, which lead to the performance failure of the biofilters. In addition, the fern chip medium has the following merits: (1) simplicity in composition; (2) low pressure drop for gas ?ow (<20 mmH2O?m-1); (3) simple in humidification, nutrient addition, pH control, and metabolite removal; (4) economical (US$174–385?m-3), and (5) low weight (wet basis around 290 kg?m-3). A two-stage down?ow biofilter (2.18 m in height and 0.4×0.4 m in cross-sectional area) was constructed for the performance test. Both stages were packed with fern chips of 0.30 m in height and 0.40×0.40 m in cross-section. Results indicate that with operation conditions of media moisture content controlled in the range of 50–74%, media pH of 6.5–8.3, empty bed retention time (EBRT) of 0.27–0.4 min, in?uent PGMEA concentrations of 100–750 mg?m-3, volu-metric organic loading of <170 ?m-3 ?hr-1, and nutrition rates of Urea-nitrogen 66 g?m-3 ?day-3, potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4)-phosphorus 13.3 g ?m-3 ?day-3, and milk powder 1.00 g?m-3?day-1, the fern-chip-packed biofilter could achieve an overall PGMEA removal efficacy of around 94%. Instant milk powder or liquid milk was essential to the good and stable performance of the biofilter for PGMEA removal.  相似文献

Two independent parallel trickling bed air biofilters (TBABs) ("A" and "B") with two different typical VOC mixtures were investigated. Toluene, styrene, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) were the target VOCs in the mixtures. Biofilter "A" was fed equal molar ratio of the VOCs and biofilter "B" was fed a mixture based on EPA 2003 emission report. Backwashing and substrate starvation operation were conducted as biomass control. Biofilter "A" and "B" maintained 99% overall removal efficiency for influent concentration up to 500 and 300 ppmv under backwashing operating condition, respectively. The starvation study indicated that it can be an effective biomass control for influent concentrations up to 250 ppmv for biofilter "A" and 300 ppmv for "B". Re-acclimation of biofilter performance was delayed with increase of influent concentration for both biofilters. Starvation operation helped the biofilter to recover at low concentrations and delayed re-acclimation at high concentrations. Furthermore, re-acclamation for biofilter "B" was delayed due to its high toluene content as compared to biofilter "A". The pseudo first-order removal rate constant decreased with increase of volumetric loading rate for both biofilters. MEK and MIBK were completely removed in the upper 3/8 media depth. While biofilter depth utilization for the removal of styrene and toluene increased with increase of influent concentrations for both biofilters. However, toluene removal utilized more biofilter depth for biofilter "B" as compared to biofilter "A".

Biofiltration is a method of biological treatment belonging to cleaner technologies because it does not produce secondary air pollutants, but helps to integrate natural processes in microorganisms for decomposing volatile air pollutants and solving odor problems. The birch wood biochar has been chosen as a principal material for biofilter bed medium. The experiments were conducted at the temperatures of 24, 28, and 32 °C, while the concentration of acetone, xylene, and ammonium reached 300 mg/m3 and the flow rate was 100 m3/hr. Before passing through the stage of the experimental research into the packing material inside biofilters, microorganisms were introduced. Four strains of microorganisms (including micromycetes Aspergillus versicolor BF-4 and Cladosporium herbarum 7KA, as well as yeast Exophiala sp. BF1 and bacterium Bacillus subtilis B20) were selected. At the inlet loading rate of 120 g/m3/hr, the highest elimination capacity of xylene in the biochar-based biofilter with the inoculated medium was 103 g/m3/hr, whereas that of ammonia was 102 g/m3/hr and that of acetone was 97 g/m3/hr, respectively. The maximum removal efficiency reached 86%, 85%, and 81%, respectively. The temperature condition (though characterized by some rapid changes) can hardly have a considerable influence on the biological effect (i.e., microbiological activity) of biofiltration; however, it can cause the changes in physical properties (e.g., solubility) of the investigated compounds.

Implications: The birch biochar can be successfully used in the biofiltration system for propagation of inoculated microorganisms, biodegrading acetone, xylene, and ammonia. At the inlet loading rate of 120 g/m3/hr, the highest elimination capacity of xylene was 103 g/m3/hr, that of ammonia was 102 g/m3/hr, and that of acetone was 97 g/m3/hr, respectively. The morphological structure of biochar can be affected by the aggressive air contaminants, causing the change in the medium specific surface area, which is one of the factors controlling the biofilter performance. Although biological effects in biofiltration are typically considered to be more important than physical effects, the former may be more important for compounds with high Henry’s Law coefficient values, and the biofilter design should thus provide conditions for better compound absorption.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Thermophilic biodégradation of toluene with active compost biofilters was studied. Thermophilic conditions were maintained either by daily substrate addition (semicontinuous composting) or with a heating system (batch thermophilic composting). The semicontinuous system was designed for the treatment of cool (less than approximately 35 °C) gases under thermophilic conditions, while the extended batch approach was developed for the treatment of warmer gases. When the semicontinuous system was operated at 50 °C (after a one-day start-up period) at an average inlet concentration of 5.5 g m-3, toluene was degraded at a rate ranging from 73 to 110 g C m-3 hr-1. Batch thermophilic treatment was somewhat less effective at the same inlet concentration. Semicontinuous toluene biofiltration at 60 °C was also investigated, but biodegradation rates were significantly lower than at 50 °C. In all systems, toluene biodegradation was proportional to the inlet concentration. Rates of up to 289 g C m-3 hr-1 (at an inlet concentration of 14.7 g m-3) were achieved for semicontinuous and batch operation and 251 g C m-3 hr-1 (at an inlet concentration of 18.4 g m-3) for batch thermophilic at 50 °C. Semicontinuous thermophilic operation at 60 °C showed a maximum rate of 119 g C m-3 hr-1. Active compost ther-mophilic biofiltration was found to be very effective when concentrations are high. At lower concentrations, rates were similar to those obtained with mesophilic biofiltration. Mixing, humidity, and the presence of cosubstrate were important parameters in maintaining high degradation rates. Biofiltration in the batch thermophilic mode could be useful when conventional biofiltration is ineffective due to elevated gas temperatures. Biofiltration in the semicontinuous thermophilic could reduce the biofilter size necessary for treatment of cooler gases containing high concentrations of volatile organic compounds.  相似文献

Methane (CH4) removal in the presence of ethanol vapors was performed by a stone-based bed and a hybrid packing biofilter in parallel. In the absence of ethanol, a methane removal efficiency of 55 ± 1% was obtained for both biofilters under similar CH4 inlet load (IL) of 13 ± 0.5 gCH4 m?3 h?1 and an empty bed residence time (EBRT) of 6 min. The results proved the key role of the bottom section in both biofilters for simultaneous removal of CH4 and ethanol. Ethanol vapor was completely eliminated in the bottom sections for an ethanol IL variation between 1 and 11 gethanol m?3 h?1. Ethanol absorption and accumulation in the biofilm phase as well as ethanol conversion to CO2 contributed to ethanol removal efficiency of 100%. In the presence of ethanol vapor, CO2 productions in the bottom section increased almost fourfold in both biofilters. The ethanol concentration in the leachate of the biofilter exceeding 2200 gethanol m?3 leachate in both biofilters demonstrated the excess accumulation of ethanol in the biofilm phase. The biofilters responded quickly to an ethanol shock load followed by a starvation with 20% decrease of their performance. The return to normal operations in both biofilters after the transient conditions took less than 5 days. Unlike the hybrid packing biofilter, excess pressure drop (up to 1.9 cmH2O m?1) was an important concern for the stone bed biofilter. The biomass accumulation in the bottom section of the stone bed biofilter contributed to 80% of the total pressure drop. However, the 14-day starvation reduced the pressure drop to 0.25 cmH2O m?1.  相似文献

Excessive accumulation of biomass within gas-phase biofilters often results in the deterioration of removal performance. Compared with chemical and biological technologies, physical technologies are more effective in removing biomass and inducing less inhibition of the biofilter performance. This study applied different physical technologies, namely, air sparging, mechanical mixing, and washing with water at various temperatures, to remove excess biomass in biofilters treating toluene. Filter pressure drop, removed dry biomass, biofilter performance, and microbial metabolic characteristics were analyzed to evaluate the effectiveness of the methods. Results showed that air sparging was inefficient for biomass removal (1 kg dry biomass/m3 filter), whereas mechanical mixing significantly inhibited removal efficiencies (<30%). Washing of the packing with fluids was feasible, and hot fluids can remove a large amount of biomass. However, hot fluids reduce microbial activity and inhibit removal performance. Washing of the packing with either 20°C or 50°C water showed efficiency as >3 kg dry biomass/m3 filter can be removed at both temperatures with removal efficiencies at approximately 40% after treatment. Finally, different technologies were compared and summarized to propose an optimized strategy of biomass control for industrial biofilters.

Implications: This study is to apply different physical technologies, namely, air sparging, mechanical mixing, and washing with water of different temperatures, to remove the excess biomass in biofilters treating toluene. The filter pressure drop, removed dry biomass, biofilter performance, and microbial metabolic characteristics were all analyzed to evaluate the effectiveness of the methods. The results of this study provide useful information regarding biomass control of industrial biofilters.  相似文献

Abstract

In this research, pilot-scale trickle bed biofilter systems have been analyzed to determine their effectiveness in controlling toluene in waste gas streams. These studies evaluated two synthetic microbial attachment media—a monolithic channelized medium and a pelletized ceramic medium. Operational parameters considered included toluene loading, empty bed residence time (EBRT), temperature, and long-term operation. The channelized medium provided 99% removal efficiency for a toluene loading of 0.725 kg COD/m3-day during the initial stages. However, continuous operation resulted in reduced and erratic efficiencies, due to air channeling caused by random plugging. After biomass accumulated within the channels and was subsequently removed by hosing, performance of the channelized medium never regained the previous levels. Similarly, the pelletized medium exhibited consistently good performance until the accumulation of excess biomass in the medium interstices also caused overall performance to deteriorate.

Implementation of a suitable backwashing strategy for biomass control was achieved for the pelletized medium by using full medium fluidization. This strategy permitted long-term operation of the biofilter at a toluene loading of 2.27 kg COD/m3-day and 1 minute EBRT, with efficiencies consistently over 99% and no appreciable back-pressure development between successive periods of backwashing.  相似文献

Trickle-bed air biofilters (TBABs) are suitable for treating volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at a significantly high practical loading because of their controlled environmental conditions. The application of TBAB for treating styrene-contaminated air under periodic backwashing and cyclical nonuse periods at a styrene loading of 0.64-3.17 kg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/m3 x day was the main focus of this study. Consistent long-term efficient performance of TBAB strongly depended on biomass control. A periodic in situ upflow with nutrient solution under media fluidization, that is, backwashing, was approached in this study. Two different nonuse periods were employed to simulate a shutdown for equipment repair or during weekends and holidays. The first is a starvation period without styrene loading, and the second is a stagnant period, which reflects no flow passing through the biofilter. For styrene loadings up to 1.9 kg COD/m3 x day, removal efficiencies consistently above 99% were achieved by conducting a coordinated biomass control strategy, that is, backwashing for 1 hr once per week. Under cyclical nonuse periods for styrene loadings up to 1.27 kg COD/m3 x day, stable long-term performance of the biofilter was maintained at more than 99% removal without employing backwashing. No substantial impact of nonuse periods on the biofilter performance was revealed. However, a coordinated biomass control by backwashing subsequently was unavoidable for attaining consistently high removal efficiency at a styrene loading of 3.17 kg COD/m3 x day. As styrene loading was increased, reacclimation of the biofilter to reach the 99% removal efficiency following backwashing or the nonuse periods was delayed. After the non-use periods, the response of the biofilter was a strong function of the biomass in the bed. No significant difference between the effects of the two different nonuse periods on TBAB performance was observed during the study period.  相似文献

Long-term operation of biofilters for biological removal of ammonia   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6

Biological removal of ammonia was investigated using two types of packing materials, compost and sludge in laboratory-scale biofilters (8l reactor volume). The aim of this study is to investigate the potential of unit systems packed with these supports in terms of ammonia emissions treatment. Experimental tests and measurements included analysis of removal efficiency, metabolic products, and results of long-term operation. The inlet concentration of ammonia applied was 20-200 mg m-3. The ammonia loading rates of 24.9-566 g NH3 m-3 d-1 to compost biofilter (BF3) and 24.9-472 g NH3 m-3 d-1 to sludge biofilter (BF4) were applied for 210 days, respectively. Removal efficiencies of the compost and sludge biofilters were in the range of 97-99% and 95-99%, respectively when the inlet concentration of ammonia was below 110 mg m-3, and the maximum elimination capacities were 288 and 243 g NH3m-3d-1, respectively. However, removal efficiency and elimination capacity of both biofilters significantly decreased as the inlet concentration increased to above 110 mg m-3. By using kinetic analysis, the maximum removal rate of ammonia, Vm, and the saturation constant, Ks, were determined for both packing materials and the value of Vm for compost was found to be larger. Periodic analysis of the biofilter packing materials showed the accumulation of the nitrification product NO3- in the operation. During the experiment, the pressure drops measured were very low. The use of both packing materials requires neither nutritive aqueous solution nor buffer solution.  相似文献

This study compares the performances of fern and plastic chips as packing media for the biofiltration of a styrene-laden waste gas stream emitted in a plant for the manufacture of plastic door plates. Fern chips (with a specific surface area of 1090 m2 m?3) and plastic chips (with a specific surface area of 610 m2 m?3) were packed into a pilot-scale biotrickling filter with a total medium volume of 50 L for the performance test. Field waste gas with styrene concentrations in the range of 161–2390 mg Am?3 at 28–30 °C) was introduced to the bed and a fixed empty-bed retention time (EBRT) of 21 sec, a volumetric gas flow rate of 8.57 m3 hr?1, and superficial gas velocity of 53.6 m hr?1 were maintained throughout the experimental period. Nutrients containing metal salts, nitrogen, phosphorus, and milk were supplemented to the filters for maintaining the microbial activities. Results reveal that the biotrickling filter developed in this study had the highest styrene monomer (SM) elimination capacities (170 g m?3 hr?1 for fern-chip packing and 300 g m?3 hr?1 for plastic-chip packing) among those cited in the literature. The plastic medium is a favorable substitute for endangered fern chips. The thermal-setting nature of plastic chips limits their recycle and reuse as raw materials, and the study provides an opportunity for the utilization of the materials.

Implications: Biotreatment of contaminants in air streams offers an inexpensive and efficient alternative to conventional technologies. Biofiltration has a great potential for the degradation of gas-borne styrene and total hydrocarbon (THC) removal efficiency of around 80%. The objective of this research was to compare the performances of fern chips and a kind of plastic chips as packing media for biofiltration of the styrene-laden waste gas stream emitted from cutting operations of stripes of premixed unsaturated polyester (UP) and styrene paste before hot-pressing operations for making plastic door plates. From a practical point of view, the plastic medium can be a good substitute medium for fern chips, which has been declared as a protected plant. This study provides an experimentally verified model for the design and operation of such biotreatment systems.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The 1990 Amendments to the Clean Air Act have stimulated strong interest in the use of biofiltration for the economical, engineered control of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in effluent air streams. Trickle bed air biofilters (TBABs) are especially applicable for treating VOCs at high loadings. For long-term, stable operation of highly loaded TBABs, removal of excess accumulated bio-mass is essential. Our previous research demonstrated that suitable biomass control for TBABs was achievable by periodic backwashing of the biofilter medium. Backwashing was performed by fluidizing the pelletized biological attachment medium with warm water to about a 40% bed expansion. This paper presents an evaluation of the impact of backwashing on the performance of four such TBABs highly loaded with toluene. The inlet VOC concentrations studied were 250 and 500 ppmv toluene, and the loadings were 4.1 and 6.2 kg COD/m3 day (55 and 83 g toluene/m3 hr). Loading is defined as kg of chemical oxygen demand per cubic meter of medium per day. Performance deterioration at the higher loading was apparently due to a reduction of the specific surface of the attached biofilm resulting from the accumulation of excess biomass. For a toluene loading of 4.1 kg COD/m3 day, it was demonstrated that the long-term performance of biofilters with either inlet concentration could be maintained at over 99.9% VOC removal by employing a backwashing strategy consisting of a frequency of every other day and a duration of 1 hr.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper presents results obtained from a performance study on the biotreatment of 1,3-butadiene in an air stream using a reactor that consisted of a two-stage, in-series biotrickling filter connected with a three-stage, in-series biofilter. Slags and pig manure-based media were used as packing materials for the biotrickling filter and the biofilter, respectively. Experimental results indicated that, for the biotrickling filter portion, the butadiene elimination capacities were below 5 g/m3/hr for loadings of less than 25 g/m3/hr, and the butadiene removal efficiency was only around 17%. For the biofilter portion, the elimination capacities ranged from 10 to 107 g/m3/hr for loadings of less than 148 g/m3/hr. The average butadiene removal efficiency was 75–84% for superficial gas velocities of 53–142 m/hr and a loading range of 10–120 g/m3/hr. The elimination capacity approached a maximum of 108 g/m3/hr for a loading of 150 g/m3/hr. The elimination rates of butadiene in both the biotrickling filter and biofilter were mass-transfer controlled for influent butadiene concentrations below about 600 ppm for superficial gas velocities of 29–142 m/hr. The elimination capacity was significantly higher in the biofilter than in the biotrickling filter. This discrepancy may be attributed to the higher mass-transfer coefficient and gas-solid interfacial area offered for transferring the gaseous butadiene in the biofilter.  相似文献

Propylene and butylene are highly reactive volatile organic compounds (HRVOCs) in terms of ground-level ozone formation. This study examined the effectiveness of biofiltration in removing propylene and butylene as separate compounds. Specific objectives were (1) to measure maximum removal efficiencies for propylene and butylene and the corresponding microbial acclimation times, which will be useful in the design of future biofilters for removal of these compounds; (2) to compare removal efficiencies of propylene and butylene for different ratios of compost/hard wood-chip media; and (3) to identify the microorganisms responsible for propylene and butylene degradation. Two laboratory-scale polyvinyl chloride biofilter columns were filled with 28 in. of biofilter media (compost/wood-chip mixtures of 80:20 and 50:50 ratios). Close to 100% removal efficiency was obtained for propylene for inlet concentrations ranging from 2.9 x 10(4) to 6.3 x 10(4) parts per million (ppm) (232-602 g/m3-hr) and for butylene for inlet concentrations ranging from 91 to 643 ppm (1.7-13.6 g/m3-hr). The microbial acclimation period to attain 100% removal efficiency was 12-13 weeks for both compounds. The lack of similar microbial species in the fresh and used media likely accounts for the long acclimation time required. Both ratios of compost/wood chips (80:20 and 50:50) gave similar results. During the testing, media pH increased slightly from 7.1 to 7.5-7.7. None of the species in the used media that treated butylene were the same as those in the used media that treated propylene, indicating that different microbes are adept at degrading the two compounds.  相似文献
