The removal efficiencies of Cr(VI) and HA, using a TiO(2)-mediated photocatalytic process, were investigated with variations in the pH, TiO(2) dosage and Cr(VI)/HA ratio. During the photocatalytic reaction, the total removal of Cr(VI) occurred through adsorption onto TiO(2), as well as its reduction to Cr(III). However, oxidation and adsorption were identified as important removal processes for the treatment of HA. Due to the anionic type adsorption onto TiO(2) and its acid-catalyzed photocatalytic reduction, the removal of Cr(VI) decreased with increasing pH, while that of HA increased with increasing pH. The TiO(2) dosage was also an important parameter for the removal of Cr(VI). As the TiO(2) dosage was increased to 2.5 g l(-1), the removal of Cr(VI) was continuously enhanced, but decreased at dosages above 3 g l(-1) due to the increased blockage of the incident UV light used for the photocatalytic reaction. The removal of Cr(VI) was greatly enhanced when the system contained both HA and Cr(VI) compared to Cr(VI) alone. Also, the removal of HA was greatly enhanced when the system contained both HA and Cr(VI) compared to HA alone. The removal of Cr(VI) was continuously enhanced as the HA concentration gradually increased; however, no further increase was observed above 20 mg l(-1) HA due to the increased absorption of the UV light. This result supports that the photocatalytic reaction, with illuminated TiO(2), could be applied to more effectively treat wastewater containing both Cr(VI) and HA than that containing a single species only.  相似文献

Coupled Bi2O3/TiO2 photocatalysts were fabricated by sol–gel and hydrothermal methods and characterized using various spectroscopy techniques. Photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) in aqueous solution, together with the synergistic effect of photodegradation of bisphenol A (BPA), was investigated using these coupled Bi2O3/TiO2 under visible-light irradiation. Coupling of Bi2O3 inhibited the phase transformation from anatase to rutile and extended absorption region to visible light. Bi ions did not enter TiO2 lattice and were more likely to bond with oxygen atoms to form Bi2O3 on the surface of TiO2. Photovoltage signals in visible range revealed the effective interfacial charge transfer between Bi2O3 and TiO2. Two percent Bi2O3/TiO2 exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity of visible-light-induced reduction of Cr(VI). The addition of BPA effectively increased the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI). Simultaneously, the presence of Cr(VI) promoted the degradation of BPA, which was demonstrated by the investigation of TOC removal yield and generated intermediates. A possible mechanism of photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) and degradation of BPA in Bi2O3/TiO2 system was proposed. The synergistic effect, observed between reduction of Cr(VI) and degradation of BPA, provides beneficial method for environmental remediation and purification of the complex wastewater.  相似文献

This study presents simultaneous hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) reduction and phenol degradation using Stenotrophomonas sp., isolated from tannery effluent contaminated soil. Phenol was used as the sole carbon and energy source for Cr(VI) reduction. The optimization of different operating parameters was done using Placket–Burman design (PBD) and Box–Behnken design (BBD). The significant operating variables identified by PBD were initial Cr(VI) and phenol concentration, pH, temperature, and reaction time. These variables were optimized by a three-level BBD and the optimum initial Cr(VI) concentration, initial phenol concentration, pH, temperature, and reaction time obtained were 16.59 mg/l, 200.05 mg/l, 7.38, 31.96 °C and 4.07 days, respectively. Under the optimum conditions, 81.27 % Cr(VI) reduction and 100 % phenol degradation were observed experimentally. The results concluded that the Stenotrophomonas sp. could be used to decontaminate the effluents containing Cr(VI) and phenol effectively.  相似文献

Hexavalent chromium and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) are two important environmental pollutants. Simultaneous decontamination of Cr(VI) and MTBE was studied by UV/TiO2 process. The influences of pH and the concentrations of pollutants on the kinetics of the photocatalytic reactions were evaluated. Dark adsorption tests showed that the acidic pH favored the adsorption of Cr(VI) while neutral pH favored the adsorption of MTBE. Under UV irradiation, Cr(VI) reduction was observed in Cr(VI)/TiO2 system, and MTBE oxidation was observed in MTBE/TiO2 system. The system containing Cr(VI) and MTBE by UV/TiO2 process demonstrated the synergistic effect between oxidation of MTBE and reduction of Cr(VI). The results demonstrated that two pollutants Cr(VI) and MTBE could be eliminated simultaneously by UV/TiO2 process. tert-Butyl formate, tert-butyl alcohol and acetone were identified as primary degradation products of MTBE by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the degradation of MTBE by UV/TiO2 process.  相似文献

The aqueous photocatalytic degradation of cyanate (NCO(-)), which is a long-lived neurotoxin formed during the remediation of cyanide in industrial waste streams, was studied in the ferrate(VI)-UV-TiO2-NCO(-) system. Kinetics measurements of the photocatalytic reduction of ferrate(VI) were carried out as a function of [NCO(-)], [ferrate(VI)], [O(2)], light intensity (I(o)), and amount of TiO2 in suspensions at pH 9.0. The photocatalytic reduction rate of ferrate(VI) in the studied system can be expressed as -d[Fe(VI)]/dt=kI(o)(0.5) [NCO(-)] [TiO2]. The rate of photocatalytic oxidation of cyanate with ferrate(VI) was greater than the rate in the analogous system without ferrate(VI). The possibility of involvement of reactive ferrate(V) species for this enhancement was determined by studying the reactivity of ferrate(V) with NCO(-) in a homogeneous solution using a premix pulse radiolysis technique. The rate constant for the reaction of ferrate(V) and NCO(-) in alkaline medium was estimated to be (9.60+/-0.07) x 10(2) M(-1) s(-1), which is much slower than the ferrate(VI) self-decomposition reaction (k approximately 10(7) M(-1) s(-1)). An analysis of the kinetic data in the Fe(VI)-UV-TiO2-NCO(-) system suggests that ferrate(V) is not directly participating in the oxidation of cyanate. Possible reactions in the system are presented to explain results of ferrate(VI) reduction and oxidation of cyanate.  相似文献

Photocatalytic oxidation of triclosan   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Yu JC  Kwong TY  Luo Q  Cai Z 《Chemosphere》2006,65(3):390-399
In the spring of 2003, there was an outbreak of the severe respiratory syndrome (SARS) in Hong Kong. Health concerns have thus triggered an increased and predominant use of various types of household cleansing agents such as triclosan (5-chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenol). However, it has been reported recently that triclosan could be photochemically converted to toxic 2,8-dichlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,8-Cl(2)DD) in the environment. It is therefore necessary to develop environmentally friendly methods for the treatment of triclosan. To this end, photocatalytic degradation of triclosan in aqueous solution was conducted using TiO(2) (Degussa P25) under irradiation of UV light (lambda < 365 nm). It was found that triclosan could be degraded by this approach. Hydrogen peroxide was added to enhance the degradation process, and the optimal initial hydrogen peroxide concentration for triclosan degradation was 0.005% (w/v). Product identification indicated that triclosan oxidation occurred at its phenol moiety and yielded quinone and hydroquinone intermediates. The formation of a dichlorophenol intermediate in triclosan degradation suggested bond-breaking of the ether linkage occurred during the process. Moreover, no chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin congener was detected. These findings confirm that the photocatalytic degradation of triclosan is an environmentally friendly process.  相似文献

The photoelectrochemical degradation of methylene blue in aqueous solution was investigated with three-dimensional electrode-photocatalytic reactor. It was found that the methylene blue could be degraded more efficiently by photoelectrochemical process than by photocatalytic oxidation or electrochemical oxidation alone. The decolorization efficiency and COD reduction were 95% and 87% for a photoelectrochemical process, respectively, while they were only 78% and 68% for a single electrochemical process and 89% and 71% for a single photochemical process. The TOC reduction of the former also reached as high as about 81% within a reaction time of 30.0 min. And these degradation reactions conformed to pseudo-first-order kinetics.  相似文献

The complexation of Fe(II) with organic ligand results in the decrease of redox potential, and enhances the reduction ability of Fe(II). An important example is the use of Fe(II)-organic complexes to accelerate Cr(VI) reduction. Dissolved O(2) and light can potentially affect Cr(VI) reduction; however, these two factors have not been adequately evaluated. A batch technique was used to investigate the Cr(VI) reduction as influenced by the light and dissolved O(2) using N-hydroxyethyl-ethylenediamine-triacetic acid (HEDTA) and Fe(II) solutions. The oxidation of Fe(II) by dissolved O(2) was rapid in the presence of HEDTA at low pH; nonetheless, the oxidation proceeded slowly when HEDTA was absent. Although Cr(VI) could be reduced by free Fe(II) at low pH, the reaction was considerably slower than that of systems involving HEDTA. The enhancement of Cr(VI) reduction by Fe(II) in the presence of high concentrations of HEDTA was achieved as a result of two processes. First, HEDTA acted as a ligand for expediting electron transfer between Fe(II) and Cr(VI). Secondly, HEDTA served as a reductant for Cr(VI) under illumination.  相似文献

TiO2 thin film photocatalyst was successfully synthesized and immobilized on glass reactor tube using sol-gel method. The synthesized TiO2 coating was transparent, which enabled the penetration of ultra-violet (UV) light to the catalyst surface. Two photocatalytic reactors with different operating modes were tested: (a) tubular photocatalytic reactor with re-circulation mode and (b) batch photocatalytic reactor. A new proposed TiO2 synthesized film formulation of 1 titanium isopropoxide: 8 isopropanol: 3 acetyl acetone: 1.1 H2O: 0.05 acetic acid (in molar ratio) gave excellent photocatalytic activity for degradation of phenol and methylene blue dye present in the water. The half-life time, t1/2 of photocatalytic degradation of phenol was 56 min at the initial phenol concentration of 1000 microM in the batch reactor. In the tubular photocatalytic reactor, 5 re-circulation passes with residence time of 2.2 min (single pass) degraded 50% of 40-microM methylene blue dye. Initial phenol concentration, presence of hydrogen peroxide, presence of air bubbling and stirring speed as the process variables were studied in the batch reactor. Initial methylene blue concentration, pH value, light intensity and reaction temperature were studied as the process variables in the tubular reactor. The synthesized TiO2 thin film was characterized using SEM, XRD and EDX analysis. A comparative performance between the synthesized TiO2 thin film and commercial TiO2 particles (99% anatase) was evaluated under the same experimental conditions. The TiO2 film was equally active as the TiO2 powder catalyst.  相似文献

The dead biomass of the brown seaweed, Ecklonia sp., is capable of reducing toxic Cr(VI) into less toxic or nontoxic Cr(III). However, little is known about the mechanism of Cr(VI) reduction by the biomass. The objective of this work was to develop a kinetic model for Cr(VI) biosorption, for supporting our mechanism. The reduction rate of Cr(VI) increased with increasing total chromate concentration, [Cr(VI)], and equivalent concentration of organic compounds, [OCs], and decreasing solution pH. It was found that the reduction rate of Cr(VI) was proportional to [Cr(VI)] and [OCs], suggesting the simple kinetic equation -d[Cr(VI)]/dt=k[Cr(VI)][OCs]. When considering the consumption of organic compounds due to the oxidation by Cr(VI), an average rate coefficient of 9.33 (+/-0.65)microM(-1)h(-1) was determined, at pH 2. Although the function of the pH could not be expressed in a mechanistic manner, an empirical model able to describe the pH dependence was obtained. It is expected that the developed rate equation could likely be used for design and performance predictions of biosorption processes for treating chromate wastewaters.  相似文献

Use of waste iron metal for removal of Cr(VI) from water   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Lee T  Lim H  Lee Y  Park JW 《Chemosphere》2003,53(5):479-485
Cr(VI) removal from water was evaluated using waste iron particles in batch experimental mode. The reaction rates were inversely proportional to the initial Cr(VI) concentrations, and the reaction rates of Cr(VI) removal with the waste iron metal were faster than those with Peerless iron, a commercial zero-valent iron. The loss in iron reactivity due to the oxidation, from Fe(0) to Fe(II), ultimately to Fe(III), could be recovered by adding iron-reducing consortium (IRC) to the oxidized iron. Bacterial reduction of Cr(VI) also helped to decrease the aqueous concentration of Cr(VI), but the reduction of oxidized iron by IRC and the consequent reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by the reduced iron was more significant. Thus, reusing waste iron metal for Cr(VI) removal can reduce the cost of reactive media. Furthermore, the addition of IRC to the waste iron metal can accelerate the removal rate of Cr(VI), and can recover the reactivity of irons which were oxidized by Cr(VI).  相似文献

A study on the Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solutions by steel wool   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The reduction of Cr(VI) by steel wool and the precipitation of reduced chromium by CaCO(3) powder and NaOH solution were investigated in continuous and batch systems, respectively. The effects of acid and initial Cr(VI) concentrations, volumetric rate and temperature of solution on Cr(VI) reduction were studied. The results showed that the reduction of Cr(VI), to a large extent, depended on, and increased with, acid concentration. The Cr(III) and iron ions in the reduced solution were completely precipitated by using NaOH solution at appropriate alkaline conditions. It was concluded that CaCO(3) powder could be used as a cheap precipitant for Cr(III) ions. But the iron ions in the reduced solution could not be fully removed by using this precipitant.  相似文献

The adsorption and photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline (TC) over Fe-saturated nanoporous montmorillonite was analyzed. The synthesized samples were characterized using XRD, FTIR, SEM, and XRF analysis, and the adsorption and desorption of TC onto these samples, as well as the antimicrobial activity of TC during these processes, were analyzed at different pH. Initially, a set of adsorption/desorption experiments was conducted, and surprisingly, up to 50% of TC adsorbed was released from Mt structure. Moreover, the desorbed TC had strong antibacterial activity. Then, an acid treatment (for the creation of nanoporous layers) and Fe saturation of the montmorillonite were applied to improve its adsorption and photocatalytic degradation properties over TC. Surprisingly, the desorption of TC from modified montmorillonite was still high up to 40% of adsorbed TC. However, simultaneous adsorption and photodegradation of TC were detected and almost no antimicrobial activity was detected after 180 min of visible light irradiation, which could be due to the photo-Fenton degradation of TC on the modified montmorillonite surface. In the porous structures of modified montmorillonite high, ˙OH radicals were created in the photo-Fenton reaction and were measured using the Coumarin technique. The ˙OH radicals help the degradation of TC as proposed in an oxidation process. Surprisingly, more than 90% of antimicrobial activity of the TC decreased under visible light (after 180 min) when desorbed from nanoporous Fe-saturated montmorillonite compared to natural montmorillonite. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that such a high TC desorption rate from an adsorbent with the least residual antimicrobial activity is reported which makes nanoporous Fe-saturated montmorillonite a perfect separation substance of TC from the environment.

Photocatalytic process has shown recently a great potential as an environmental friendly and clean remediation technology for organic pollutants in wastewater. This work described the synthesis of silver-based bimetallic nanoparticles using colloid chemistry and the subsequent immobilization onto titania to form composite photocatalytic materials (titania-supported Ag–Pt nanoparticles). The photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and nitrogen physisorption. The catalytic activity of the photocatalysts was evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of phenol and 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) in synthetic wastewater solutions. The photocatalytic processes were conducted in a batch photoreactor containing appropriate solutions of phenol and 2-CP with UV irradiation of 450 W. UV-visible spectrophotometer was used for analyzing the concentration of phenol and 2-CP in solutions. Parameters affecting the photocatalytic process such as the solution pH, phenol and 2-CP concentrations, and catalyst concentration were investigated. The results obtained revealed that TiO2-supported Ag/Pt nanoparticles showed a higher activity for UV-photocatalytic degradation of both phenol and 2-CP pollutants in the solution (as compared to the plain rutile TiO2). The photodegradation processes were optimized by the 0.5-g/L catalyst with a pollutant concentration of 50 mg/L for all the samples. Complete degradation for both phenol and 2-CP was achieved after 120 min.  相似文献

This study describes an investigation using tropical water lilies (Nymphaea spontanea) to remove hexavalent chromium from aqueous solutions and electroplating waste. The results show that water lilies are capable of accumulating substantial amount of Cr(VI), up to 2.119 mg g(-1) from a 10 mg l(-1) solution. The roots of the plant accumulated the highest amount of Cr(VI) followed by leaves and petioles, indicating that roots play an important role in the bioremediation process. The maturity of the plant exerts a great effect on the removal and accumulation of Cr(VI). Plants of 9 weeks old accumulated the most Cr(VI) followed by those of 6 and 3 weeks old. The results also show that removal of Cr(VI) by water lilies is more efficient when the metal is present singly than in the presence of Cu(II) or in waste solution. This may be largely associated with more pronounced phytotoxicity effect on the biochemical changes in the plants and saturation of binding sites. Significant toxicity effect on the plant was evident as shown in the reduction of chlorophyll, protein and sugar contents in plants exposed to Cr(VI) in this investigation.  相似文献

A novel class of visible light-activated photocatalysts was prepared by codoping TiO(2) with cerium and iodine (Ce-I-TiO(2)). The particles were characterized using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV-Visible light absorption. Particles of Ce-I-TiO(2) had greater photoabsorption in the 400-800 nm wavelength range than iodine-doped TiO(2) (I-TiO(2)). The effects on the photocatalytic degradation of oxalic acid under visible light or UV-Visible light irradiation were investigated. The photocatalytic activity of Ce-I-TiO(2) calcined at 673 K was significantly higher than that of Ce-I-TiO(2) calcined at 773 K and I-TiO(2) calcined at 673 K in aqueous oxalic acid solution under visible light or UV-Visible light irradiation. Under visible light irradiation, oxalic acid was first adsorbed on the surface of the catalysts rather than reacted with free radicals in the bulk solution, and then oxidized by (·)OH(ads) to CO(2), which was verified by studying the effects of nitrogen purging and scavengers, as well as by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.  相似文献

FeIII supported on resin as an effective catalyst for oxidation was prepared and applied for the degradation of aqueous phenol. Phenol was selected as a model pollutant and the catalytic oxidation was carried out in a batch reactor using hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant. The influent factors on oxidation, such as catalyst dosage, H2O2 concentration, pH, and phenol concentration were examined by considering both phenol conversion and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. The FeIII-resin catalyst possesses a high oxidation activity for phenol degradation in aqueous solution. The experimental results of this study show that almost 100% phenol conversion and over 80% COD removal can be achieved with the FeIII-resin catalyst catalytic oxidation system. A series of prepared resin were investigated for improving the oxidation efficiency. It was found that the reaction temperature and initial pH in solution significantly affected both of phenol conversion and COD removal efficiency. The activity of the catalyst significantly decreased at high pH, which was similar to the Fenton-like reaction mechanism. Results in this study indicate that the FeIII-resin catalytic oxidation process is an efficient method for the treatment of phenolic wastewater.  相似文献

The present work mainly deals with photocatalytic degradation of a herbicide, erioglaucine, in water in the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles (Degussa P-25) under ultraviolet (UV) light illumination (30 W). The degradation rate of erioglaucine was not so high when the photolysis was carried out in the absence of TiO2 and it was negligible in the absence of UV light. We have studied the influence of the basic photocatalytic parameters such as pH of the solution, amount of TiO2, irradiation time and initial concentration of erioglaucine on the photodegradation efficiency of erioglaucine. A kinetic model is applied for the photocatalytic oxidation by the UV/TiO2 system. Experimental results indicated that the photocatalytic degradation process could be explained in terms of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model. The values of the adsorption equilibrium constant, K, and the second order kinetic rate constant, k, were 0.116 ppm-1 and 0.984 ppm min-1, respectively. In this work, we also compared the reactivity between the commercial TiO2 Degussa P-25 and a rutile TiO2. The photocatalytic activities of both photocatalysts were tested using the herbicide solution. We have noticed that photodegradation efficiency was different between both of them. The higher photoactivity of Degussa P-25 compared to that of rutile TiO2 for the photodegradation of erioglaucine may be due to higher hydroxyl content, higher surface area, nano-size and crystallinity of the Degussa P-25. Our results also showed that the UV/TiO2 process with Degussa P-25 as photocatalyst was appropriate as the effective treatment method for removal of erioglaucine from a real wastewater. The electrical energy consumption per order of magnitude for photocatalytic degradation of erioglaucine was lower with Degussa P-25 than in the presence of rutile TiO2.  相似文献

1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane (or p,p′-DDT) is one of the most persistent pesticides. It is resistant to breakdown in nature and cause the water contamination problem. In this work, a major objective was to demonstrate the application of N-doped TiO2 in degradation and mineralization of the p,p′-DDT under UV and visible light in aqueous solution. The N-doped TiO2 nanopowders were prepared by a simple modified sol–gel procedure using diethanolamine (DEA) as a nitrogen source. The catalyst characteristics were investigated using XRD, SEM, TEM, and XPS. The adsorption and photocatalytic oxidation of p,p′-DDT using the synthesized N-doped TiO2 under UV and visible light were conducted in a batch photocatalytic experiment. The kinetics and p,p′-DDT degradation performance of the N-doped TiO2 were evaluated. Results show that the N-doped TiO2 can degrade p,p′-DDT effectively under both UV and visible lights. The rate constant of the p,p′-DDT degradation under UV light was only 0.0121 min?1, whereas the rate constant of the p,p′-DDT degradation under visible light was 0.1282 min?1. Under visible light, the 100% degradation of p,p′-DDT were obtained from N-doped TiO2 catalyst. The reaction rate of p,p′-DDT degradation using N-doped TiO2 under visible light was sixfold higher than that under UV light. According to Langmuir-Hinshelwood model, the adsorption equilibrium constant (K) for the N-doped TiO2 under visible light was 0.03078 L mg?1, and the apparent reaction rate constant (k) was 1.3941 mg L?1-min. Major intermediates detected during the p,p′-DDT degradation were p,p′-DDE, o,p′-DDE, p,p′-DDD and p,p′-DDD. Results from this work can be applied further for the breakdown of p,p′-DDT molecule in the real contaminated water using this technology.  相似文献
