There is a possibility of further controls on emissions to the atmosphere of nitrogen oxides to meet air quality objectives in the UK. Data in the National Air Quality Archive were used to calculate the likely sensitivity of hourly concentrations of nitrogen dioxide in ambient urban air to changes in the total oxides of nitrogen. Since the role of atmospheric chemical reactions is to make the response non-linearly dependent on the emissions control, we seek to establish the magnitude and sign of the effects that this non-linearity might cause. We develop a quantitative approach to analysing the non-linearity in the data. Polynomial curve fits have been developed for the empirical ratio NO2 : NOx (the ‘yield’). They describe nitrogen dioxide concentrations using total oxides of nitrogen. The new functions have the important feature of increased yield in winter episodes. Simpler functions tend to omit this feature of the yields at the highest hourly concentrations. Based on this study, the hourly nitrogen dioxide objective in the UK may require emissions control of no more than ≈50% on total oxides of nitrogen at the most polluted sites: other sites require less or even no control.  相似文献

Since 1959 the California Department of Public Health has held responsibility for setting standards for ambient air quality and for motor vehicle emissions. The need for standards for oxides of nitrogen involves consideration both of direct effects and effects resulting from participation in photochemical smog reactions. This paper discusses the various effects of concern and describes the department’s program for establishing air quality standards which will become the basis for vehicle emission standards and serve as guides for control of other sources of oxides of nitrogen.  相似文献

Air quality is shown as a function of averaging times of five minutes to one year for carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, nitrogen oxides, oxidant, and sulfur dioxide in Chicago, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington, D. C. Concentrations are approximately lognormally distributed for all pollutants in all cities for all averaging times. Maximum concentration is inversely proportional to averaging time to an exponent. The exponent is a function of the standard geometric deviation. General air quality and control parameters are derived and shown for one example, nitrogen oxides in Washington, D. C. Legislation to control motor vehicle exhaust emissions has been introduced in the United Kingdom in stages since the early 1970s. Recently, a further step has been taken towards reducing future exhaust emissions of carbon monoxide, unburnt hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen in the 'Luxembourg agreement' (Lubinska, 1985). In this paper, the possible impact of these proposed controls on photochemical air pollution formation in the United Kingdom is investigated, including an evaluation of the relative merits of the two principal emission control options for petrol-driven cars: 'Lean Burn' engines and 'Catalyst' exhaust gas treatment.  相似文献

Multistage gas absorption of 1–50% nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and nitrogen tetraoxide from air with water or caustic solutions can produce colorless stack discharges. The rate at which NO is oxidized to No2 in the gas phase and the solubility rate of No2 in water or solution are highly concentration dependent so that reductions of stack gas concentrations of nitrogen oxides below approximately 200 ppm appear to be impractical. High efficiency absorption combined with elevated discharge of the cleaned, colorless gases is an acceptable method of air pollution control for many troublesome operations. Experiences in the fields of rocketry and nuclear energy are cited. Engineering modifications of metal pickling operations have been found especially helpful in producing effective control at an acceptable cost.  相似文献

Gaseous wastes and particulate emissions are produced in the process of burning coal to produce electrical energy. In attempting to control these gaseous wastes, changes in the operation efficiency of boilers and secondary equipment are likely to result, and in addition liquid and solid waste streams are produced. The interrelationships among the various forms of wastes and the effects of air quality control on process efficiency are often overlooked in studies of environmental quality management.

The study was undertaken to evaluate the technical alternatives for handling gaseous and particulate emissions from coal-fired boilers and to determine the feasibility of meeting several standards simultaneously. The gaseous emissions of major importance in the combustion of coal are parti culates, oxides of sulfur, and oxides of nitrogen. Particulates can be controlled by a tradeoff among further preparation at the mine (for additional ash removal), type of boiler, use of dust control equipment and high stacks for dispersion of residual emissions, if ambient air standards are considered. Oxides of sulfur reduction depends currently on fuel substitution, limestone additives in the boiler and some form of contact process such as wet scrubbing, or the use of high stacks. Oxides of nitrogen control in coal fired boilers is restricted to small reductions by either changes in boiler operation, such as lower excess air levels, adsorption during wet scrubbing or by dispersion from high stacks.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to investigate the appearance of contaminants in fluorocarbon-film bags which have been widely used as photochemical reactors and storage containers in air pollution research. Clean air stored in such bags was gradually contaminated by a wide range of heavy hydrocarbons (≥ C5 ) as well as by nitrogen oxides. Warming a bag dramatically increased the contamination rate for hydrocarbons. The substances observed in the bags appear to have originated in the air outside the bags and appeared in the bags due to the permeability of the film. When a bag was stored in a controlled clean environment, the rate of contamination by hydrocarbons was dramatically reduced. Experiments in which high concentration mixtures of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides were stored in the bags likewise showed that some high molecular weight hydrocarbons as well as NO and NO2 permeate through the bag walls. Decontamination of the bags can be accomplished by storing them in a clean environment.  相似文献

Recent research has demonstrated that nitrogen oxides are transformed to nitrogen acids in indoor environments, and that significant concentrations of nitrous acid are present in indoor air. The purpose of the study reported in this paper has been to investigate the sources, chemical transformations and lifetimes of nitrogen oxides and nitrogen acids under the conditions existing in buildings. An unoccupied single family residence was instrumented for monitoring of NO, NO2, NOy, MONO, HNO3, CO, temperature, relative humidity, and air exchange rate. For some experiments, NO2 and HONO were injected into the house to determine their removal rates and lifetimes. Other experiments investigated the emissions and transformations of nitrogen species from unvented natural gas appliances. We determined that HONO is formed by both direct emissions from combustion processes and reaction of NO2 with surfaces present indoors. Equilibrium considerations influence the relative contributions of these two sources to the indoor burden of HONO. We determined that the lifetimes of trace nitrogen species varied in the order NO ~ HONO > NO2 >HNO3. The lifetimes with respect to reactive processes are on the order of hours for NO and HONO, about an hour for NO2, and 30 minutes or less for HNO3. The rapid removal of NO2 and long lifetime of HONO suggest that HONO may represent a significant fraction of the oxidized nitrogen burden in indoor air.  相似文献
