A new approach to the problem of environmental hazard assessment and monitoring for pollutant biodegradation reaction systems in the presence of uncertainty is proposed using soft sensor-based pollutant concentration dynamic profile reconstruction techniques. In particular, a robust reduced-order soft sensor is proposed that can be digitally implemented in the presence of inherent complexity and the inevitable model uncertainty. The proposed method explicitly incorporates all the available information associated with a process model characterized by varying degrees of uncertainty, as well as available sensor measurements of certain physicochemical quantities. Based on the above information, a reduced-order soft sensor is designed enabling the reliable reconstruction of pollutant concentration profiles in complex biodegradation systems that can not be always achieved due to physical and/or technical limitations associated with current sensor technology. The option of using the aforementioned approach to compute toxic load and persistence indexes on the basis of the reconstructed concentration profiles is also pursued. Finally, the performance of the proposed method is evaluated in two illustrative environmental hazard assessment case studies. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: The Watershed Nutrient Transport and Transformation (NTT-Watershed) model is a physically based, energy-driven, multiple land use, distributed model that is capable of simulating water and nutrient transport in a watershed. The topographic features and subsurface properties of the watershed are refined into uniform, homogeneous square grids. The vertical discretization includes vegetation, overland flow, soil water redistribution and groundwater zones. The chemical submodel simulates the nitrogen dynamics in terrestrial and aquatic systems. Three chemical state variables are considered (NO3--, NH4+, and Org-N). The NTT-Watershed model was used to simulate the fate and transport of nitrogen in the Muddy Brook watershed in Connecticut. The model was shown to be capable of capturing the hydrologic and portions of the nitrogen dynamics in the watershed. Watershed planners could use this model in developing strategies of best management practices that could result in maximizing the reductions of nitrogen export from a watershed. 相似文献

Solvents are very commonly used in industrial facilities for a multitude of reasons. Traditionally, solvent selection has been based on minimizing the process operating cost while satisfying a set of operational requirements. Regrettably, safety considerations have typically been overlooked during the design phase. In this paper, a systematic approach is introduced to integrate safety issues into solvent selection and provides a computationally effective method for establishing tradeoffs between the economic and safety objectives. In order to quantify the risk associated with the solvent, we focus on the potential spillage of the solvent and introduce a risk index that is a function of the amount of solvent used and stored, as well as the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) dictated by regulatory directives. An optimization formulation is developed and the associated mathematical program solved to select optimal solvents and blends while incorporating economic, technical, and safety considerations. Tradeoff (Pareto) curves are developed to represent the multi-objective optimization results and tradeoffs. Furthermore, economic-data uncertainty and variability over expected ranges are included in the optimization formulation to conduct an insightful sensitivity analysis. Finally, an illustrative case study is considered via increasing levels of complexity in order to evaluate the proposed optimization method which considers both operating cost and safety risk implications in the presence of economic uncertainties. 相似文献

The present research study proposes a new set of appropriately defined indices for the characterization of persistence of chemicals in a multimedia environment that prominently figures as a key exposure-based indicator within contemporary frameworks of chemical hazard and risk assessment, as well as recent international regulatory initiatives. Effectively overcoming some of the limitations associated with traditional approaches that could lead to a potential misclassification of chemical substances, the proposed set of persistence indices retain also a conceptually insightful and computational appeal. Conceptually inspired by certain measures/indices for the characteristic time found in classic dynamic systems theory, and technically relying on notions and methods from the theory of matrices, the new performance indices can be easily calculated on the basis of a dynamic multimedia environmental model and the aid of a software package such as MATLAB. In particular, an extension of the notion of equivalence width as a quantitative proxy of overall persistence is introduced, that captures the dynamic history of the chemical's environmental behavior, while remaining independent of the particular release pattern and discharge conditions (thus overcoming the standardization difficulties encountered when a large number of chemicals need to be first screened and classified in a tiered hazard assessment methodology). Furthermore, a second persistence index is introduced whose value can be analytically calculated through the solution of a simple Lyapunov matrix equation bearing some resemblance to certain measures of system resilience used in theoretical biology and ecology, yet inspired by system-theoretic notions associated with the Lyapunov framework of analysis in systems science. Furthermore, for both persistence measures a comparison is made with the slowest time-constant associated with the specific chemical dynamics in a multimedia environment, and upper and lower bounds are established. Finally, the proposed persistence indices are calculated on the basis of a standard dynamic multimedia environmental model for various representative cases involving chemicals of particular interest. 相似文献

Thallium is present in the natural environment in low concentration, being found most frequently in the sulphide ores of a number of heavy metals. Atmospheric emission and deposition from industrial sources has resulted in raised levels in the vicinity of mineral smelters, coal burning power plants, brick works and cement plants. In contaminated areas, raised levels are found in vegetables, fruit and in farm animals. Thallium is used industrially in small quantities, with uses in electronics, in the production of certain glasses and crystals and in medical diagnostics. It has in the past been commonly used as a rodenticide, but its use has now been banned in many countries. Thallium salts are now considered to be amongst the most toxic compounds known. With regard to population exposure, an epidemiological study in an area with high thallium concentrations in soil and garden vegetables centred on a cement plant, has found evidence of a dose response relationship between thallium concentration in urine and a number of non-specific subjective symptoms. Much further research is required to investigate the possible adverse health effects of thallium following population exposure. 相似文献

There is limited evidence to suggest that certain compounds of cadmium may be mildly mutagenic. Some compounds of cadmium have given rise to fibrosarcoma and rhabdomyosarcoma following subcutaneous or intramuscular injection in the rat and also to interstitial cell tumours of the testis as a sequel to cellular damage and testicular atrophy. Cadmium chloride aerosol inhalation has induced a high incidence of dose‐related lung cancer in the rat. Epidemiological observations suggest that mortality from prostatic and possibly from lung cancer has been increased in cadmium workers who had experienced the very high levels of cadmium, mainly as oxide dust or fume, which existed in the past. The more recent epidemiological studies have not added further evidence in support of the carcinogenic role of cadmium. 相似文献

Particulate atmospheric pollution in urban areas is considered to have significant impact on human health. Therefore, the ability to make accurate predictions of particulate ambient concentrations is important to improve public awareness and air quality management. This study examines the possibility of using neural network methods as tools for daily average particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter <10 microm (PM10) concentration forecasting, providing an alternative to statistical models widely used up to this day. Based on a data inventory, in a fixed central site in Athens, Greece, ranging over a two-year period, and using mainly meteorological variables as inputs, neural network models and multiple linear regression models were developed and evaluated. Comparison statistics used indicate that the neural network approach has an edge over regression models, expressed both in terms of prediction error (root mean square error values lower by 8.2-9.4%) and of episodic prediction ability (false alarm rate values lower by 7-13%). The results demonstrate that artificial neural networks (ANNs), if properly trained and formed, can provide adequate solutions to particulate pollution prognostic demands. 相似文献

The present paper describes the development of a database that comprises all incidents from the Greek petrochemical industry for the period 1997–2003. This database includes industrial incidents, accidents, operational accidents and near misses from all petrochemical sites in Greece and Cyprus. The design of the database has been conceived in a user-friendly way with additional possibilities for its further use, such as: statistical analysis of the data, calculation of safety indicators, accident reports and human factors analysis. The database allows the various participating industries to compare the analysis of indicators in their own installations with the national average, as the database comprises data from the entire Greek petrochemical industry.
