The temperature range for the best competitive position by growth of Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii Cleve has been determined by comparing generation times. It ranges from-1.5° to 6°C. At these temperatures, especially at lower light intensities, it was one of the fastest growing species, whereas above 6°C many other species grew faster. High light intensities at increasing temperatures became damaging. A flowering of the cold oligo-eurytherm diatom T. nordenskioeldii occurs not only in the upper layers, but can also occur at greater depth simultaneously, because decreasing daylengths at 6°C had the least influence on its growth. Continuous light at 6°C had a positive influence on its growth. The start of the T. nordenskioeldii spring flowering under the Arctic Sea Ice is discussed in connection with the occurrence of enclosed marine diatoms in Polar Sea Ice. The influence of the winter temperature on the spring flowering of the North Sea, the southern border for flowerings of T. nordenskioeldii, is discussed. For Chaetoceros diadema (Ehrenberg) Gran the best competitive position by growth is reached at-1.5° to about 6°C. It has the best opportunity of reaching high cell numbers at the lowest temperatures of the range. The occurrence of the cold oligo-eurytherm diatom Ch. diadema in plankton samples at temperatures above 10°C need not be incorret, for the species did grow in cultures at 12° and 16°C. The wrong interpretation of the experimentally determined optimum temperature of e.g. T. nordenskioeldii caused a discrepancy between experimental results and field data that does not exist. The question is discussed whether ecologically it is relevant to talk about a temperature optimum. On account of the results of T. nordenskioeldii the question of the adaptation of diatom cultures for the start of the real experiments is discussed.  相似文献

Contamination of aquatic ecosystems with heavy metals has been receiving increased worldwide attention due to their harmful e ects on human health and other organisms in the environment. Most of the studies dealing with toxic e ects of metals deal with single metal species, while the aquatic organisms are typically exposed to mixtures of metals. Hence, in order to provide data supporting the usefulness of freshwater fish as indicators of heavy metal pollution, it has been proposed in the present study to investigate the bioaccumulation and depuration of chromium in the selected organs of freshwater fingerlings Cirrhinus mrigala, individually and in binary solutions with nickel. The results show that the kidney is a target organ for chromium accumulation, which implies that it is also the “critical” organ for toxic symptoms. The results further show that accumulation of nickel in all the tissues of C. mrigala is higher than that of chromium. In addition, the metal accumulations of the binary mixtures of chromium and nickel are substantially higher than those of the individual metals, indicating synergistic interactions between the two metals. Theoretically the simplest explanation for an additive joint action of toxicants in a mixture is that they act in a qualitatively similar way. The observed data suggest that C. mrigala could be suitable monitoring organisms to study the bioavailability of water-bound metals in freshwater habitats.  相似文献

Application of appropriate environmentally conscious manufacturing strategies enables the sustainable development of products and processes. Automotive component manufacturers recognise the potential of applying appropriate strategies for attaining Triple Bottom Line benefits. In this context, three strategies such as eco-efficiency, waste minimisation and material efficiency are being applied to minimise environmental impacts associated with the manufacture of automotive products and its associated processes. A case study of an automotive component manufacturing firm has been exemplified. After conducting the study, the potential environmental impact was reduced by 20% and eco-efficiency was improved by 13%. Further, improvements have been observed in terms of overall resource consumption and material efficiency. The overall power consumption was reduced by 18% and weight of the component was reduced by 11%. The study aimed at improving the sustainable performance of product by incorporating green and environmentally friendlier manufacturing practices.

Lead is a widespread element and one of the persistent and cumulative pollutants of the environment. The present study deals with the bioaccumulation of lead and the influence of chelating agents, meso 2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), D-Penicillamine and CaNa2EDTA in reducing the concentration of lead on the selected organs of Catla catla fingerlings for both acute and chronic exposures by using ICP-AES. It is inferred from the present findings that there was a correlation between environmental conditions and the heavy metal contents of the fish. The highest concentration of lead is found in kidney tissues and the lowest in muscle tissues. The accumulation pattern of lead in the selected organs of Catla catla is: kidney > liver > gill > brain > muscle. Also, it has been found that the treatment of chelating agents, DMSA, D-Penicillamine and CaNa2EDTA reduces the concentration of lead significantly for both acute and chronic exposures. The results also show that DMSA is the most effective chelator of lead in reducing the body burden of C. catla fingerlings. The observed data further indicate that C. catla could be suitable for monitoring organisms to study the bioavailability of water-bound metals in freshwater habitats.  相似文献

Heavy metal discharges to aquatic environment are of great concern due to their toxicity and accumulative behavior. Zinc is an essential trace element required for different physiological functions and plays important role in cellular metabolism. However, it becomes toxic when elevated concentrations are introduced into the environment. The aim of this work is to analyze zinc induced biochemical changes in the brain tissues of Labeo rohita fingerlings using Fourier Transformation Infrared Spectroscopy. Several important features have been observed in the zinc intoxicated brain tissues, namely, altered membrane lipid, altered protein profile and decreased glycogen content, indicating an alteration in the lipid and protein profiles leading to modification in membrane composition. Further, it is observed that the acute exposure to zinc causes some alteration in protein profile with a decrease in α-helix and an increase in random coil structures.  相似文献

A new dune area was constructed by beach and foreshore nourishments along the Delfland Coast in the southwestern Netherlands. The new area is intended to be a compensation for losses of existing high quality dunes in nearby areas, due to the use/construction of Maasvlakte 2, the new harbour extension of Rotterdam opening in 2013. The target habitats for compensation include dry grey dunes and moist dune valley grassland. Due to the habitat type, the nourished material had to have a special character. The nourishment was carried out according to a special design and initial development of the new area had to follow certain pathways. In order to meet the compensation requirements in time. Careful monitoring is done to assess whether development of the new habitat is taking place in the direction of the desired target habitats. This paper reports on the construction of the new area and on the first years of development and monitoring. The monitoring mainly concerns development of the abiotic landscape elements, geomorphology, groundwater and soils. The lessons learned from this area are discussed in the light of the development of other recent young nature areas in the sandy Dutch delta coast. This gives new insights for coastal management in general in the context of building with nature.  相似文献

For further development of organic agriculture, it will become increasingly essential to integrate experienced innovative practitioners in research projects. The characteristics of this process of co-learning have been transformed into a research approach, theoretically conceptualized as “experiential science” (Baars 2007, Baars and Baars 2007). The approach integrates social sciences, natural sciences, and human sciences. It is derived from action research and belongs to the wider field of transdiscliplinary research. In a dialogue-based culture of equality and mutual exchange the principal of a “bottom-up” experiential learning process can be stimulated and fully reflective. It provides an opportunity to develop organic agriculture as multiple best-practices based on transdisciplinary projects, cases studies, and case series. The aim of the article is to describe the methodological characteristics and the theoretical and practical potential of experiential science for research in and development of organic farming. Three characteristic projects are outlined to illustrate the main elements of the methodology: the retrospective reflection on intuitive and experiential knowledge held by farmers; the knowledge derived from on-farm experimentation; the exchange of knowledge and experiences between farming pioneers within a “masterclass” setting. The study concludes that experiential science offers an important philosophical reconciliation process whereby a synthesis of different approaches to research becomes possible in solving real-life problems: quantitative and qualitative, subjective and objective, reductionistic and holistic, practice and science. Recognizing that there are multiple elements contributing to the process of acquiring knowledge, experiential science draws on a broad field of scientific methods thereby integrating the hermeneutic approach of social sciences and the Humanities with the established methods of contemporary natural science.  相似文献

To support grazing and fire management of communal semi-arid to sub-humid African rangelands, the assessment of grazing capacity is illustrated for cattle. The forage dry matter intake (DMI) was divided into four components: 1) the mature standing crop, 2) the green part of the standing crop, 3) the regrowth after range fires, and 4) browse. The relationship between the potential DMI and the crude protein (CP) concentration of the forage was modelled. The DMI ranged from 5 to 50% for forage with low to high CP concentrations, respectively. The DMI of browse was fixed at 0 and 10% of the DMI of unburnt vegetation for plain and woodland systems, respectively. The potential DMI of the four forage components combined, based on data of the early- to mid-dry season, was matched with livestock requirements to calculate grazing capacities. Possible combinations of and changes in the forage components, representing grazing capacities for different seasons of the year, were calculated and visualised. Lastly, it was demonstrated how to assess the proportion of the rangeland that should be burnt to make optimal use of the low quality forage available in abundance and the small amount of high quality regrowth.  相似文献

Increased participation in resource management decisions by a wide range of stakeholders has been widely advocated, and has recently been formally incorporated into the European Water Framework Directive. However, achieving such participation has generally proved to be problematical. In response to locally perceived needs, a project was set up in the Ythan catchment in northeast Scotland, to undertake catchment management actions with increased public involvement. This paper outlines the methods used to increase public participation in such actions, and some preliminary assessments of the effectiveness of these. The experience of the project and the lessons learnt, including some of the difficulties of ensuring fully representative stakeholder involvement, are discussed in relation to published criteria for public participation in resource management.  相似文献
