This article presents methods and results of interlaboratory comparison in the electromagnetic field (EMF) survey measurements
performed by Electromagnetic Environment Protection Laboratory. Based on the results, the author analyzed factors affecting
the precision of EMF measurements, in particular—difficult to estimate—the “human factor”. In practice, the human factor has
never been taken into account in the EMF measurements accuracy estimations budget, and the author estimate the importance
of this factor that may include even up to half of the total uncertainty of measurements. Taking into account all factors
depredating the accuracy of measurements, the uncertainty of the survey EMF measurements was estimated at the level of 2–4 dB. 相似文献

In 2006, we used the U.S. Coast Guard’s Automatic Identification System (AIS) to describe patterns of large commercial ship
traffic within a U.S. National Marine Sanctuary located off the coast of Massachusetts. We found that 541 large commercial
vessels transited the greater sanctuary 3413 times during the year. Cargo ships, tankers, and tug/tows constituted 78% of
the vessels and 82% of the total transits. Cargo ships, tankers, and cruise ships predominantly used the designated Boston
Traffic Separation Scheme, while tug/tow traffic was concentrated in the western and northern portions of the sanctuary. We
combined AIS data with low-frequency acoustic data from an array of nine autonomous recording units analyzed for 2 months
in 2006. Analysis of received sound levels (10–1000 Hz, root-mean-square pressure re 1 μPa ± SE) averaged 119.5 ± 0.3 dB at
high-traffic locations. High-traffic locations experienced double the acoustic power of less trafficked locations for the
majority of the time period analyzed. Average source level estimates (71–141 Hz, root-mean-square pressure re 1 μPa ± SE)
for individual vessels ranged from 158 ± 2 dB (research vessel) to 186 ± 2 dB (oil tanker). Tankers were estimated to contribute
2 times more acoustic power to the region than cargo ships, and more than 100 times more than research vessels. Our results
indicate that noise produced by large commercial vessels was at levels and within frequencies that warrant concern among managers
regarding the ability of endangered whales to maintain acoustic contact within greater sanctuary waters.

It was shown that the 4 Hz 30 dB mechanical vibration (MV) of physiological solution (PS) had modulation effect on snail heart
contractility. However, the nature of metabolic pathway of MV-treated PS-induced effect is not clear yet. It was suggested
that the MV-induced modulation of water molecules dissociation leads to the variation of reactive oxygen species’ level in
cell bathing medium, which could serve as a messenger for switching on the metabolic pathway(s) responsible for modulation
of muscle contractility. The aim of present work was to check this hypothesis and to elucidate the metabolic pathway through
which the effect of MV-treated PS on heart contractility was realized. For this purpose, the effect of MV on heat fusion periods
(HFP) and H2O2 content in PS, as well as on heart contractility, 45Ca2+ efflux, intracellular levels of cGMP and cAMP, muscle hydration, and ouabain binding were studied. It was shown that MV treatment
of PS increased the HFP-(21.33 ± 4%) and decreased the H2O2 content-(5 ± 0.9%). The intracardiac perfusion by MV-treated PS increased the amplitudes of heart contractility, which was
accompanied by the increasing of 45Ca2+ efflux (252.4 ± 16%), elevation of cGMP’s level (42.05 ± 7%), decreasing of cAMP’s level (82.67 ± 7%), increasing of the
tissue hydration (18.64 ± 3%), and increasing of the number of ouabain binding sides (25 ± 4%). It was suggested that MV-induced
increasing of heart muscle contraction amplitudes is due to the decreases of H2O2 content in the medium, which leads to the elevation of heart muscle contractility in result of activation of cGMP-dependent
Na+/Ca2+ exchange in forward regime. 相似文献

Summary The effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted by cellular phones on human electroencephalogram (EEG) were studied during
an auditory memory task. The experimental method and the experimental setup are introduced as a credible measurement method
of EEG. 19 normal subjects (10 women and 9 men) performed the memory task both with and without exposure to a 900 MHz signal,
emitted by a dipole antenna placed near the subjects' head. The energy of the EEG signals was calculated at the time domain.
A Fourier transform of the EEG signals was done and the EEG energy was also calculated at the frequency domain. As the Parseval's
theorem anticipates the energies were identical. The EEG energy was found concentrated at the four basic bands (α (8–13 Hz),
β(14–30 Hz), δ (0–4 Hz) and θ(5–7 Hz)). The primary concern of the present study was the gender related influence of EMF on
the spectral energy of EEG. The results show evidence of a strong gender—radiation interaction effect on the EEG energy and
on the peak amplitudes within each of the four rhythms. Without radiation the spectral power of males is greater than of females,
while under exposure the situation is reversed. Under the influence of EMF the spectral power of the males EEG is decreased
while that of the females is increased. In conclusion both the baseline EEG and the changes effected to the EEG power spectrum
under the influence of EMF seem to be gender dependent. 相似文献

The effects of extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field (ELF EMF) and ELF-modulated millimeter waves (MMW) on physicochemical
properties of physiological solution (PS) at different environmental medium were studied. The existence of frequency “windows”
at 4 Hz and 8 Hz frequencies of ELF EMF and ELF-modulated MMW which have different effects on heat fusion period (HFP), hydrogen
peroxide (H2O2) formation and oxygen (O2) content of water solution and different dependency on temperature, background radiation (BGR) and illumination was shown.
The obtained data allow us to suggest that cell bathing medium serving as a target through which the biological effects of
ELF EMF and ELF-modulated MMW on cells are realized is extra sensitive to environmental factors. Therefore, the variability
of experimental data on EMF biological effects, obtained in different laboratories can be explained by different environmental
conditions of experiments, which very often are not considered adequately. 相似文献

High frequency electromagnetic fields (EMF) are widely used for transmitting of radio and TV signals, in wireless communications,
etc. A huge number of people are exposed so the possible risk to human health from telecommunication technologies could be
significant even if biological effects are slight. The study of the biological effects of RF EM radiation could contribute
to better understanding of the possible health hazards. The levels of released hemoglobin serve as an indicator of hemolysis,
caused by increased membrane fragility. This study was designed to investigate the alterations in hemoglobin release after
in vitro exposure of human erythrocytes to GSM900 electromagnetic field. Erythrocyte suspensions with two different cell concentrations
(hematocrit 20% and 40%) were exposed to EM radiation from GSM mobile phone (carrier frequency 902 MHz, 2 W output power in
pulse) for 20 min in two different positions in relation to telephone antenna: Position 1 is in the centre of the major lobe
of the azimuth antenna pattern and Position 2 is between major and back lobes. Alterations in hemolysis were registered 0,
10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 min after the treatment. Hemolysis was determined by measuring the absorbance of hemoglobin at 413 nm
in the supernatant obtained by centrifuging the suspensions. Hemolysis was expressed as hemoglobin concentration. Our data
indicated decrease in the hemoglobin level in irradiated suspensions. The GSM900 EMF exposure probably stabilized erythrocyte
membrane and caused reduction in the hemolysis depending on the EMF parameters, on the suspension water content (hematocrit)
and on the time elapsed after irradiation. 相似文献

The new recommendations of WHO and EC for legislation in Europe and other countries concerning non-ionizing radiation (NIR)
health and safety include exposure limits that are very debatable. ICNIRP Guidelines propose exposure limits for electromagnetic
fields in the frequency range up to 300 GHz based on short-term exposures and on thermal effects. The new EC proposal for
optical and laser safety legislation includes classification of sources of radiation—both lasers and other optical sources,
but not requirements for the methodology of classification. On the other hand, many new requirements have been set by the
WHO publication “Model Legislation for EMF Protection” concerning the responsibilities in the field of EMF health and safety.
Many specialists in the field of developing exposure limits have positions very far away from the proposed of the ICNIRP Guidelines
philosophy. The results are different approaches in developing standards and exposure limits, and differences more than 100
times in maximal permissible levels. We, the Bulgarian Program Committee on NIR, try to organize working groups and discuss
different philosophy for developing exposure limits for more than 10 years. This paper exposes our position in this area. 相似文献

To better understand the affect of different levels of EMF on one’s brain activity, the Hodgkin–Huxley model has been used
to describe the generation of an active potential in the nerve cell membrane. The theoretical calculations have shown that
by the simultaneous affect of both passing an electrical potential and external very low frequency AC, one’s excitation pulses
may be suppressed beginning with a certain level of external current. The level of this current depends on the frequency.
It is postulated that to eliminate this suppression, the brain increases its normal level relatively to the lower limit. It
is also postulated that the brain “tunes up” in the presence of external AC, by increasing the amplitude of its own excitation
signals so that suppression does not occur. It is possible that this “tuning” process lasts some time after removing the external

wires on pylons and substations, which were preliminarily investigated by taking measurements in schools (on behalf of the
Environmental Committee of Limassol). It publicizes the level of EMF from the above sources and makes an attempt to compare
them with various exposure limits.

N = 11,076). Results were compared to a large, nonrandomly sampled data set for the same area compiled by Rohm and others and
contrasted with lake trophic state information published in the National Water Quality Inventory: 1994 Report to Congress
[305(b) report. Lakes across the entire Northeast were identified by EMAP data as 37.9% (±8.4%) oligotrophic, 40.1% (±9.7%)
mesotrophic, 12.6% (±7.9%) eutrophic, and 9.3% (±6.3%) hypereutrophic. Lakes in the ADI and NEU generally are at a low, nearly
identical trophic state (96% oligotrophic/mesotrophic), while those in the CLP are much richer (45% eutrophic). EMAP results
are similar to results of the Rohm data set across the entire region. In the CLP, however, EMAP identified approximately 45%
of the lakes as eutrophic/hypereutrophic, while the Rohm data set identified only 21% in these categories. Across the entire
Northeast, the 305(b) report identified a much higher proportion (32.2%) of lakes in eutrophic condition and a much smaller
proportion (19.8%) in oligotrophic condition than did the EMAP survey data (12.5% ± 7.9% and 37.9% ± 8.5%, respectively).

The present study investigated the influence of electromagnetic fields (EMF), similar to that emitted by mobile phones, on
brain activity. Ten women and ten men, matched for age and educational level, performed a short memory task (Wechsler test),
with simultaneous Electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings at 15 scalp electrodes, both without (baseline) and with exposure
to an 1,800 MHz signal. The EEG energy was found concentrated at the four basic EEG bands [α (8–13 Hz), β (14–30 Hz), δ (0–4 Hz), and θ (5–7 Hz)]. The analysis revealed that in the presence of EMF, the energy of the β band was significantly greater for females than for males at the majority of the electrodes. Since beta oscillation is associated
with the shift of attention during the perception, these findings may indicate that the particular EMF (1,800 MHz signal)
exerts an influence on this brain activity, which appears to be gender-related. 相似文献

Reduction of carbon emissions from tropical deforestation and forest degradation is being considered a cost-effective way of mitigating the impacts of global warming. If such reductions are to be implemented, accurate and repeatable measurements of forest cover change and biomass will be required. In Papua New Guinea (PNG), which has one of the world's largest remaining areas of tropical forest, we used the best available data to estimate rainforest carbon stocks, and emissions from deforestation and degradation. We collated all available PNG field measurements which could be used to estimate carbon stocks in logged and unlogged forest. We extrapolated these plot-level estimates across the forested landscape using high-resolution forest mapping. We found the best estimate of forest carbon stocks contained in logged and unlogged forest in 2002 to be 4770 Mt (±13%). Our best estimate of gross forest carbon released through deforestation and degradation between 1972 and 2002 was 1178 Mt (±18%). By applying a long-term forest change model, we estimated that the carbon loss resulting from deforestation and degradation in 2001 was 53 Mt (±18%), rising from 24 Mt (±15%) in 1972. Forty-one percent of 2001 emissions resulted from logging, rising from 21% in 1972. Reducing emissions from logging is therefore a priority for PNG. The large uncertainty in our estimates of carbon stocks and fluxes is primarily due to the dearth of field measurements in both logged and unlogged forest, and the lack of PNG logging damage studies. Research priorities for PNG to increase the accuracy of forest carbon stock assessments are the collection of field measurements in unlogged forest and more spatially explicit logging damage studies. 相似文献

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency National Stormwater Calculator (NSWC) simplifies the task of estimating runoff through a straightforward simulation process based on the EPA Stormwater Management Model. The NSWC accesses localized climate and soil hydrology data, and options to experiment with low‐impact development (LID) features for parcels up to 5 ha in size. We discuss how the NSWC treats the urban hydrologic cycle and focus on the estimation uncertainty in soil hydrology and its impact on runoff simulation by comparing field‐measured soil hydrologic data from 12 cities to corresponding NSWC estimates in three case studies. The default NSWC hydraulic conductivity is 10.1 mm/h, which underestimates conductivity measurements for New Orleans, Louisiana (95 ± 27 mm/h) and overestimates that for Omaha, Nebraska (3.0 ± 1.0 mm/h). Across all cities, the NSWC prediction, on average, underestimated hydraulic conductivity by 10.5 mm/h compared to corresponding measured values. In evaluating how LID interact with soil hydrology and runoff response, we found direct hydrologic interaction with pre‐existing soil shows high sensitivity in runoff prediction, whereas LID isolated from soils show less impact. Simulations with LID on higher permeability soils indicate that nearly all of pre‐LID runoff is treated; while features interacting with less‐permeable soils treat only 50%. We highlight the NSWC as a screening‐level tool for site runoff dynamics and its suitability in stormwater management. 相似文献

The low productivity of salmonids in many river systems across the UK is testament to their intolerance of water quality perturbations including those associated with excessive sedimentation. Catchment and fishery managers concerned with combating such issues require reliable information on the key sources of the sediment problem to target management and on the efficacy of the mitigation options being implemented. In recognition of the latter requirement, a pre- and post-remediation sediment sourcing survey was used to examine the potential for using sediment tracing to assemble preliminary information on the efficacy of riparian fencing schemes for reducing sediment contributions from eroding channel banks to salmonid spawning gravels in the Rivers Camel, Fal, Lynher, Plym, Tamar and Tavy in the south west of the UK. Respective estimates of the overall mean proportion (±95% confidence limits) of the interstitial sediment input to salmonid spawning gravels originating from eroding channel banks during the pre- (1999–2000) and post-remediation (2008–2009) study periods were computed at 97 ± 1% vs. 69 ± 1%, 94 ± 1% vs. 91 ± 1%, 12 ± 1% vs. 10 ± 1%, 92 ± 1% vs. 34 ± 1%, 31 ± 1% vs. 16 ± 1% and 90 ± 1% vs. 66 ± 1%. Whilst the study demonstrates the potential utility of the fingerprinting approach for helping to assemble important information on the efficacy of bank fencing as a sediment source control measure at catchment scale, a number of limitations of the work and some suggestions for improving experimental design are discussed. Equivalent data are urgently required for many sediment mitigation options to help inform the development of water quality policy packages designed to protect aquatic ecosystems. 相似文献

Water samples were collected from River Kanoni which passes near a municipal solid waste (MSW) dumping facility in Bukoba Town, Kagera Region, United Republic of Tanzania. The objective of the study was to assess surface water pollution caused by a MSW dump. Selected physico-chemical parameters (pH, temperature, Electrical Conductivity [EC], and Total Dissolved Solids [TDS]), nutrient levels, as well as heavy metals concentrations (Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr, Cd) were analyzed in the laboratory at the University of Dar es Salaam, in accordance with standard methods, and were compared with the existing standard limits for freshwater qualities, as stipulated by WHO and US-EPA. Results have shown that pH values were within the allowable range of between 6.5 and 8.5, except for one value (8.82 ± 0.11) that was measured at the midstream. Temperature values were between 26.28 ± 1.02°C and 28.35 ± 0.15°C, which are within the allowable range of between 20°C and 50°C. EC values were between 262.50 ± 8.32 μS/cm and 345.01 ± 6.48 μS/cm, which are below the maximum allowable value of 400 μS/cm. TDS values were between 183.75 ± 6.55 mg/L and 241.51 ± 11.33 mg/L, which are below the maximum allowable value of 500 mg/L. Nitrate levels were between 17.52 ± 1.12 mg/L and 32.00 ± 3.02 mg/L, which are above the standard limit of 10 mg/L above. Concentrations of Lead, Chromium, and Cadmium were between 0.03 ± 0.01 mg/L and 0.16 ± 0.05 mg/L, 0.55 ± 0.02 mg/L and 1.14 ± 0.07 mg/L, and 0.009 ± 0.12 mg/L and 0.098 ± 0.22, respectively, which are all above the recommended limits of 0.01, 0.05, and 0.003 mg/L, respectively. Values for copper and zinc were between 0.02 ± 0.12 mg/L and 0.20 ± 0.22 mg/L, and 0.79 ± 0.32 mg/L and 1.57 ± 0.04 mg/L respectively, which are below the recommended limits of 1.3 and 5 mg/L, respectively. This study has revealed that Bukoba MSW dumping facility has potential impacts on the water quality in River Kanoni, for domestic usage. This, therefore, demands all relevant authorities to immediately find a proper and sustainable replacement for the existing MSW dump in Bukoba town. 相似文献

Thirty-eight different milk and milk powder samples from Tehran-Iran were collected and analyzed for 90Sr activity using a method in which the daughter product of 90Sr decay (90Y) was extracted by tributyl phosphate from ashed milk. 90Y was then back extracted with water, and oxalate was precipitated . Following the sample analyzing, beta counting was performed
with an ultralow-level liquid scintillation spectrometer. The quality control and assurance of the method were obtained by
standard samples prepared with an IAEA-certified reference material. The mean determined 90Sr activity concentration in the analyzed milk and milk powder (0.225 ± 0.042 and 0.216 ± 0.024 Bq kg−1, respectively) showed that the radioactivity concentration in our samples was too low to induce biological hazards. These
data can provide useful information of the background level of contamination, which in turn can be used in the following environmental

Crab samples, both male and female specie, were purchased from fishermen at the Ojo Rivers, Lagos, Nigeria. The samples separated
into abdomen, muscle tissue, and thorax were oven dried at 80°C for 3 days. The dried samples were then pulverized in a clean
acid-washed mortar and pestle. Approximately 1.00 g each of the pulverized samples was weighed and Zn, Cr, Pb, and Cd were
determined in the solution of the aqua regia digested samples by means of AAS (Buck Scientific 210 GVP model). The results
obtained showed Zn metal to be consistently higher in all the female parts compared to the male with values of 12.92 ± 3.65 μg/g
to 16.03 ± 1.08 μg/g and 9.33 ± 1.77 μg/g to 15.75 ± 1.02 μg/g, respectively. Mean values of 0.39 ± 0.09 μg/g and 0.22 ± 0.02 μg/g
cadmium were found in the abdomen and tissue of the male crab as against 0.35 ± 0.07 μg/g and 0.17 ± 0.07 μg/g in the female
crab. The tissues of both species have comparable value of chromium. Lead was below the detection limit of 0.05 μg/g in the
tissues of male crab but the female tissue contained 0.83 ± 0.13 μg/g and in other parts identified, lead was consistently
higher than the 2.00 μg/g permissible level of WHO in foods. A simple pair t-test did not demonstrate any significant difference in the distribution of metals between the male and female crabs. The
coefficient of variation (CV) calculated for each metal with respect to the studied parts showed Pb to be widely distributed
(56.23–89.54%) while Cr did not vary widely (4.17–8.20%). 相似文献

Summary In an effort to explain the benefit of therapeutic use of electromagnetic fields (EMF) a systemic effect has been proposed
by us. To assess the efficacy of this approach, an objective biochemical approach was developed. Ten patients with Reflex
Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) were clinically evaluated, and lymphocytes were isolated from their blood samples obtained before
and after exposure of the uninvolved limb to an EMF. Utilizing a SpectraCell method that includes radio labeled molecules
and protein-free media for culturing the lymphocytes, an elevation of the content of fructose, serine, glycine, and calcium
cellular metabolic uptake were found following in the culture to EMF in comparison with non-exposed lymphocytes (p < 0.01). In addition, the pain level was determined by a conventional visual analogue scale (VAS) before and after EMF exposure,
evidencing a significant pain relief. Specifically, after exposure to 120 pps semi sinewave, 1500Gauss EMF, generated by a
THERAMAG∘ledR device, an improvement in the flexibility of the limb and a reduction in swelling of the affected extremity were detected
clinically. These findings are in concert with the new hypothesis that, with relief of pain, lymphocytes are predominately
altered in their cell cycle from M phase to S phases associated with increased structuring of intracellular water. A consideration
of the basic understanding of the role lymphocytes may be inferred from this preliminary study. An extensive review of the
literature on the basic science and therapeutic use of magnetic fields in humans is provided in an attempt to understand the
relevance of magnetic therapy of specific pain syndromes. 相似文献

With the increase of urbanization, municipal solid waste has also increased. Therefore, the need for solid waste management is also increasing compared with earlier decades. Composting is a good option for the recycling of solid waste; however, it produces leachate, which requires proper treatment systems to prevent environmental degradation. Due to high chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations in compost leachate, anaerobic treatment is the best option for handling the effluent, and an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) is one such anaerobic reactor that can be used for its treatment. Because of high ammonia and heavy metal concentrations, as well as the possibility of sludge washout in ABRs, it is important to use proper media, such as zeolite, which can reduce inhibition effects and sludge washout from the reactor. Anaerobic treatment, especially during the methanogenesis phase, is sensitive, and pH and alkalinity are parameters that influence the treatment. Therefore, adjusting these parameters within a normal range is very important to the proper functioning of anaerobic systems. In this study, a pilot‐scale ABR was used, and the last 4 of the 8 ABR compartments were filled with zeolite. The bioreactor was operated at hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 3, 4, and 5 days, with zeolite filling ratios of 10%, 20%, and 30%, and influent COD concentrations of 10,000, 20,000, and 30,000 milligrams per liter (mg/L). In this study, pH value was 6.43 ± 0.1, 6.96 ± 0.3, and 6.96 ± 0.25 at filling ratios of 10%, 20%, and 30%, respectively. According to the results, in all filling ratios, no significant changes were observed in the pH value when the organic loading rate increased and its amount was within a constant range. Influent alkalinity was equal to 2015 ± 510, 2884 ± 505, and 4154 ± 233 milligrams of calcium carbonate per liter (mg CaCO3/L) at influent COD concentrations of 10,000, 20,000, and 30,000 mg/L, respectively, and in effluent, they were 2536 ± 336, 3379 ± 639, and 4377 ± 325 mg CaCO3/L, respectively. The amount of alkalinity in the effluent increased compared with the alkalinity in the influent. The results show that the amount of alkalinity in the influent and effluent was similar, and the alkalinity enhancement was lower when the filling ratio was increased from 10% to 20%, and 20% to 30%. Comparisons of the results from zeolite with and without biofilm showed that, in cases of zeolite with biofilm, the amounts of silica and oxygen decreased and the amount of carbon increased, and it showed the formation of biofilm on the surface of zeolite. In addition, the absence of sodium in the zeolite with the biofilm indicated that sodium was exchanged with ammonium ions. According to the results, zeolite can be used in anaerobic reactors as a medium, and it also reduces fluctuations in pH and alkalinity at different organic loading rates, providing a normal range for anaerobic treatment. 相似文献
