We tested separately the effect of two taxonomically related rotifers (B. patulus and B. macracanthus) on the population dynamics of another species (A. fissa) at low (0.5 ×10 6) and high food levels (1.5 × 106 cells/ml of Chlorella vulgaris) using different inoculation densities (0–100%). We also quantified the impact of A. fissa on the two brachionid species. Regardless of the presence of the competing species, an increase in the availability of food led to increase in the abundances of the three rotifers. The population growth of B. patulus, B. macracanthus, or A. fissa was affected negatively when cultured together with another species. An increase in the initial density of any one of the competing species became advantageous to maintain a certain population size. At a low algal food level, B. patulus was able to suppress A. fissa more strongly than B. macracanthus. On the other hand, at a high food level, B. macracanthus suppressed the population of A. fissa more strongly than B. patulus. Peak population densities for A. fissa varied from about 150 to 1000 ind./ml, depending on food density and the presence of competitors. The rate of population increase (r) of A. fissa, B. patulus, and B. macracanthus increased with an increase in food availability but decreased with increasing initial density of the competitor. Both Brachionus spp. experienced negative growth rates in the presence of A. fissa, especially at a high initial density of the latter. Seasonal trend of fog water chemical composition in the Po Valley   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Fog frequency in the Po Valley, Northern Italy, can be as high as 30% of the time in the fall-winter season. High pollutant concentrations have been measured in fog water samples collected in this area over the past few years. The combined effects of high fog occurrence and high pollutant loading of the fog droplets can determine, in this area, appreciable chemical deposition rates. An automated station for fog water collection was developed, and deployed at the field station of S. Pietro Capofiume, in the eastern part of the Po Valley for an extended period: from the beginning of November 1989 to the end of April 1990. Time-resolved sampling of fog droplets was carried out during all fog events occurring in this period, and chemical analyses were performed on the collected samples. Statistical information on fog occurrence and fog water chemical composition is reported in this paper, and a tentative seasonal deposition budget is calculated for H+, NH4+, NO3- and SO4(2-) ions. The problems connected with fog droplet sampling in sub-freezing conditions are also addressed in the paper.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: NO production (NOex) in the airway epithelium is increased in asthmatic patients and is potently inhibited by anti-inflammatory treatments. The study was designed to compare the: (i) levels of NOex in two groups of asthmatic children residing in different environments (one in a national park in the mountains and the other in a large city) and (ii) the influence of glucocorticoids on levels of NOex between the children and those without treatment. METHODS: The measurements were performed during the same period in the two locations, 100 km apart. NOex was measured using a chemiluminescence analyzer in controls and two comparable groups of asthmatic children. The first group included 63 children (10+/-3 years) recruited from a specialized institution for asthmatic children, and the second group consisted of 46 asthmatic children (9+/-3 years) living in an urban area. A reference group of 17 healthy children residing in the same city was also studied. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: The concentrations of NOex in children in the specialized institution were significantly lower (P<.001) than those in asthmatic children living in the city (5.1+/-2.4 vs. 13.8+/-9.3 ppb) and comparable to those in healthy controls (5.3+/-4.0 ppb). In the urban area, NOex levels increased when atmospheric pollution recorded on the previous day had increased. In contrast to that observed in the urban children, glucocorticoids had little influence on the levels of NOex in the children living in the specialized institution. CONCLUSIONS: Although these relationships need to be confirmed, our findings show that for the determination of NOex, specifying the quality of the environment, in particular, the purity of the air respired by asthmatic children, not only at the time of measurement but also over the previous days, is important.  相似文献

Besides some mammals and a few model organisms, the presence of genetic variation in ovary or gonad development at ages before that of reproduction has not been established for marine oviparous species nor has the correlation with reproductive traits at maturity. In this investigation, ovary development was evaluated for genetic variability in a full-sib family structured population of subadult shrimp. The numbers of each oocyte type that were present were counted, measured, and used to evaluate the following traits: total oocyte number, mean oocytes diameter, and ovary maturity (OM). The total ovary area was also measured for each female. Genetic variation was assessed through the estimation of the parameter ‘heritability’. The heritability (h 2) of total number of oocytes was zero, but large heritability values were seen for mean oocytes diameter (h 2=0.57±0.27) and OM (h 2=0.71±0.26). Family means correlations between traits in subadults with traits measured in their full-sibs when adults (days to first spawn, total number of spawns, total fecundity, and fecundity at first spawn) indicated the existence of some significant associations between reproductive traits at the two ages. These findings point toward an early genetic determination of reproductive capacity in this crustacean.  相似文献
