A biomonitoring survey using the moss species Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw. was conducted in the surroundings of two steel plants located in the North of Spain. Levels of V, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Hg, Pb and N were determined. Very high concentrations in the areas of study were detected when compared to nearby unaffected regions. Similar trends were observed for all the elements in the differently orientated transects, showing an appreciable influence of the NW prevailing winds of the region in the dispersion of pollutants, as well as a clear decreasing gradient in the concentrations of metals in mosses within a distance of 1500 meters from the facilities. A differentiation between the elements emitted by the chimney as result of the industrial activity (V, Cr, Ni, Cu and As) and those with a high presence in steel slag deposits (Zn, Cd, Hg and Pb) was observed. The range of contamination was also established by means of the Contamination Factor, indicating a category 4 out of 6 categories, which shows the high levels reported in the areas of study. A different dynamic was registered for nitrogen regarding the rest of the heavy metals analysed except for Hg, probably due to the elevated volatility and mobility of both elements, as well as their high persistence in the atmosphere.  相似文献

Corals from the Swain Reefs of the Great Barrier Reef were exposed to 15NH 4 + in sea water, and the disappearance of NH 4 + from the medium and the appearance of 15N in the corals was followed. Disappearance of NH 4 + usually followed a reasonably smooth curve with rate of disappearance decreasing as the concentration of NH 4 + decreased; the decrease in rate was not the result of damage to the corals. The rate of uptake of 15NH 4 + vs concentration did not describe a normal substrate saturation curve, as uptake may have been diffusion limited. 15N was assimilated into the corals in the form of stable organic nitrogenous compounds. Its assimilation usually exhibited an initial lag. An ahermatypic coral did not remove NH 4 + from the medium. Differences in NH 4 + uptake with a 1-h cycle of light and dark were minor. Isolated zooxanthellae assimilated 15NH 4 + as indicated by accumulation of 15N with no lag.  相似文献

The photosynthetic quotients of the marine prymnesiophyte Pavlova lutheri and the marine dinoflagellate Glenodinum sp. were measured at different concentrations of dissolved oxygen and inorganic carbon. Dissolved oxygen concentration appeared to be the most important factor controlling the photosynthetic quotient. Photosynthetic quotients generally were between 1.0 and 1.8 at oxygen concentrations less than saturation, were approximately 1.0 at oxygen saturation, and generally were from 0.1 to 1.0 at oxygen concentrations greater than saturation. The photosynthetic quotients greater than 1.0 were not caused by lipid synthesis. They may have been partially caused by the presence of KNO3 rather than an ammonium salt in the growth media. The dinoflagellate symbionts (zooxanthellae) present in many reef corals aid in the survival of the symbiotic unit in nitrogen deficient tropical waters by providing additional routes of nitrogen uptake and metabolism. The enzymatic pathway of ammonia assimilation from seawater and the re-assimilation of coral ammonium waste by zooxanthellae was studied by examining the affinity of glutamine synthetase for one of its substrates, ammonia. Glutamine synthetase activity was measured in dinoflagellates of the species Symbiodinium microadriaticum found in symbiotic association with various marine coelenterates. Michaelis-Menten kinetics for the substrate ammonia were determined for freshly isolated dinoflagellates from Condylactis gigantea (apparent NH3 Km=33 M) and for cultured dinoflagellates from Zoanthus sociatus (apparent NH3 Km=60 M). On the basis of the low apparent Kms for NH3, it appears that ammonia assimilation by these symbiotic dinoflagellates occurs via the glutamine synthetase/glutamate synthase pathway. Additionally, the uptake of exogenous ammonium by an intact coelenterate-dinoflagellate symbiosis was strongly inhibited by 0.5 mM methionine sulfoximine, and inhibitor of glutamine synthetase.  相似文献

The rates of photosynthesis and dark respiration for 7 marine algae and 1 fresh-water alga were measured and compared. The dinoflagellates Glenodinium sp. and zooxanthellae have high dark respiration rates relative to photosynthetic rates, which may decrease their net growth rates. Photorespiration in the 8 algal species was studied by examining the effects of the concentration of oxygen on the rates of photosynthesis, on the incorporation of 14CO2 into the photorespiratory pathway intermediates glycine and serine, and on the postillumination burst of carbon dioxide production and oxygen consumption. A combination of these results indicates that all the algae tested can photorespire, but that Glenodinium sp., Thalassiosira pseudonana, and zooxanthellae either have a photorespiratory pathway different from that proposed for freshwater algae (Tolbert, 1974), or an additional pathway for glycolate metabolism.  相似文献

Sorption of hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (HDTMA), a cationic surfactant, on aquifer material from Columbus AFB, Mississippi, U.S.A., was examined. Transport studies using flow-through columns and a box model aquifer showed that an almost stationary zone of HDTMA-modified aquifer material could be produced in situ without a significant decrease in hydraulic conductivity.Perchloroethylene (PCE) and naphthalene sorption isotherms on the HDTMA-modified aquifer material were linear, and sorption coefficients were increased by over two orders of magnitude relative to the unmodified material. The retardation of PCE by insitu emplaced HDTMA zones within a column was examined. Agreement between batch- and column-derived sorption coefficients and breakthrough curve symmetry indicates that local equilibrium was attained. Significant retardation of a naphthalene plume by an in situ emplaced surfactant zone was demonstrated in the box model aquifer system.The experimental results indicate that it is feasible to create in situ a sorbent zone within an aquifer using cationic surfactants. In most situations, the sorbent zone concept needs to be coupled with contaminant degradation processes for sorbent emplacement to be a practical tool in the remediation of groundwater contamination sites. Sorbent zones may be of benefit in the engineering of suitable environments for microbial or abiotic degradation reactions and by providing time slow reactions to occur.  相似文献

Perfluorooctanesulfonyl fluoride (POSF, C8F17SO2F) related-materials have been used as surfactants, paper and packaging treatments, and surface (e.g., carpet, textile, upholstery) protectants. A metabolite, perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS, C8F17SO3), has been identified in the serum and liver of non-occupationally exposed humans and wildlife. Because of its persistence, an important question was whether elderly humans might have higher PFOS concentrations. From a prospective study designed to examine cognitive function in the Seattle (WA) metropolitan area, blood samples were collected from 238 dementia-free subjects (ages 65–96). High-pressure liquid chromatography-electrospray tandem mass spectrometry determined seven fluorochemicals: PFOS; N-ethyl perfluorooctanesulfonamidoacetate; N-methyl perfluorooctanesulfonamidoacetate; perfluorooctanesulfonamidoacetate; perfluorooctanesulfonamide; perfluorooctanoate; and perfluorohexanesulfonate. Serum PFOS concentrations ranged from less than the lower limit of quantitation (3.4 ppb) to 175.0 ppb (geometric mean 31.0 ppb; 95% CI 28.8–33.4). An estimate of the 95% tolerance limit was 84.1 ppb (upper 95% confidence limit 104.0 ppb). Serum PFOS concentrations were slightly lower among the most elderly. There were no significant differences by sex or years residence in Seattle. The distributions of the other fluorochemicals were approximately an order of magnitude lower. Similar to other reported findings of younger adults, the geometric mean serum PFOS concentration in non-occupational adult populations likely approximates 30–40 ppb with 95% of the population’s serum PFOS concentrations below 100 ppb.  相似文献
