Airborne measurements of the growth of the marine accumulation mode after multiple cycles through stratocumulus cloud are presented. The nss-sulphate cloud residual mode was log-normal in spectral shape and it’s mode radius was observed to progressively increase in size from 0.78 to 0.94 μm over 155 min of air parcel evolution through the cloudy marine boundary layer. The primary reason for this observed growth was thought to result from aqueous phase oxidation of SO2 to aerosol sulphate in activated cloud drops. An aqueous phase aerosol–cloud-chemistry model was used to simulate this case study of aerosol growth and was able to closely reproduce the observed growth. The model simulations illustrate that aqueous phase oxidation of SO2 in cloud droplets was able to provide enough additional sulphate mass to increase the size of activated aerosol. During a typical cloud cycle simulation, ≈4.6 nmoles kg-1air (0.44 μg m-3) of sulphate mass was produced with ≈70% of sulphate production occurring in cloud droplets activated upon sea-salt nuclei and ≈30% occurring upon nss-sulphate nuclei, even though sea-salt nuclei contributed less than 15% to the activated droplet population. The high fraction of nss-sulphate mass internally mixed with sea-salt aerosol suggests that aqueous phase oxidation of SO2 in cloud droplets activated upon sea-salt nuclei is the dominant nss-sulphate formation mechanism and that sea-salt aerosol provides the primary chemical sink for SO2 in the cloudy marine boundary layer.  相似文献

Coloured substances cause problems when interpreting algal tests, because effects due to light absorption can interact with potential toxicity. The Lemna Duckweed growth inhibition test can complement the algal test, on condition that the test is performed on a black, not reflecting surface. On white surfaces, test solution colour can strongly impact Lemna growth. For example, average control sample growth rate of is much higher on white surfaces (0.362 d(-1)) than on black surfaces (0.284 d(-1)). We found that 10 mg l(-1) of the dyestuff "Brilliant Blue R spezial" inhibited average Lemna growth rate about 22% on white surfaces but did not inhibit growth on black surfaces. The reason for this difference stems from the difference in amount of light reflected from below the test beakers. With Brilliant Blue on white surfaces, the test solution colour reduces utilizable light and causes a deterioration of light conditions, whereas on a black surfaces, reflected light is absent a priori, and thus no inhibiting effect was measured. Of particular importance is the choice of test parameter. With Brilliant Blue, a LOEC for average growth rate, based on frond numbers, of 320 mg l(-1) was determined. However, when average growth rate was calculated using dry weights of the plants, the LOEC decreased clearly to 1.0 mg l(-1). In this study, the Lemna test was much more sensitive than the algal test. We recommend Lemna tests be used in addition to algal tests, because doing so may significantly improve the assessment of phytotoxicity of chemicals and sewage.  相似文献

The reuse of human wastes as biofertilizer resources offers a new option for meeting the growing demand for food and addressing poor soil productivity. Feces and black water are ubiquitous human wastes that usually require proper treatment, such as composting and anaerobic digestion, to remove potentially harmful substances before they can be applied as fertilizers. As an effective treatment technology for livestock farming wastes, the ectopic fermentation bed system (EFS) provides a new means of treating human waste and producing organic fertilizer from decomposed filler. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the nutrient content and fertilizer potential of decomposed fillers obtained after EFS treatment of human feces and black water under different application conditions. The results showed that the application of fillers increased the yield of pakchoi by 3.60?29.32% and nutrient uptake by 8.09?83.45% compared to the CK, which could effectively promote the growth of pakchoi. This approach also improved the quality of pakchoi and enhanced soil fertility, and differences were observed in the effects of different kinds and application amounts of fillers. Soil EC was the soil property that had the greatest effect on the growth characteristics of pakchoi in this study. These findings help to better clarify the agronomic value of human wastes, but the effects of long-term filler application need to be further explored.

This study investigates the relationship between environmental pollution and economic growth in the context of renewable energy in OECD countries using the panel smooth transition regression (PSTR) model for 1995–2018. The study finds the value of the threshold variable, calculated as the share of renewable energy use in total energy consumption, to be 7.825%. In this context, economic growth affects the environment negatively and increases environmental pollution when the share of renewable energy use in energy consumption is below the threshold. When this share is above the threshold, it reduces environmental pollution by affecting the environment positively. In addition, the findings reveal a non-linear inverted U-shaped relationship between the environment and economic growth in the context of renewable energy, and the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis is valid. Therefore, the widespread use of renewable energy is a solution to reducing environmental pollution. Accordingly, it is very important for policymakers to both highlight and encourage renewable energy use. Furthermore, countries need to both invest in this area and focus on R&D to increase renewable energy production.

Levels of eight PCB congeners and thirteen organochlorine pesticides were measured in eggs sampled at four yellow-legged gull colonies from the Aegean Sea (NorthEastern Mediterranean) in 1997. There were no significant differences among colony areas in the median concentrations in any of the pollutants whereas cluster analyses did not generally reveal reasonable pollution patterns. The maximum concentrations of four congeners were found at Kinaros colony and of nine compounds were found at Lipsos colony. Fingerprints in both groups were similar in all areas. Of PCBs, congener 28, 118, 138, 180 and of pesticides beta-BHC and 2,4'-DDD were prominently dominant suggesting a particular pollution pattern in this region. Statistically significant correlations were found between most of the higher PCBs in all areas studied. The DDT metabolites correlated mostly with other OCs. We suggest that regional pollution by both groups is not adequately reflected in the eggs of this gull probably due to its extensive scavenging habits and, though information is needed from more colonies, it seems to be a poor biomonitor for organochlorines in this region.  相似文献
