Batch culture experiments were performed to investigate potential effects of nutrient starvation on the allelochemical potency of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense. Triplicate cultures with reduced nitrate (−N) or phosphate (−P) seed were compared to nutrient-replete (+N+P) cultures. Total depletion of the dissolved inorganic limiting nutrient, reduced cell quotas, changed mass ratios of C/N/P and reduced cell yield clearly indicate that treatment cultures at stationary phase were starved by either N or P, whereas growth cessation of +N+P cultures was probably due to carbon limitation and/or a direct effect of high pH. Pulsed addition of the limiting nutrient allowed −N and −P cultures to resume growth. Lytic activity of A. tamarense as quantified by a Rhodomonas bioassay was generally high (EC50 around 100 cells mL−1) and was only slightly modulated by growth phase and/or nutrient starvation. Lytic activity per cell increased with time in both +N+P and −P cultures but not −N cultures. P-starved stationary-phase cells were slightly more lytic than +N+P cultures, but this difference may be due to increased cell size and/or accumulation of extracellular compounds. In conclusion, only slight changes but no general and major increase in lytic activity in response to nutrient starvation was observed.  相似文献

The article presents the results for enrichment of total trace metals (TTMs) from Pallikaranai salt marsh in South Chennai, a metropolis on the southeast coast of India. TTMs Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Co, Pb, Zn, Cd, Sr, V, and Hg along with sediment texture, OC, and CaCO3 were analyzed in 36 surface sediments collected during August 2008 to recognize and observe the input of TTMs in the marsh from various sources in the city limits. In view of the rapid urbanization and industrialization in Chennai City, especially on the southern side, uncontrolled input of sewage, garbage, and industrial effluents into the Pallikaranai marsh land, the elevated concentrations are not surprising. The level of enrichment of TTMs has also increased by 20% to 60% for most of the elements when compared with all other ecosystems in the world as well as the nearby area. The results also indicate that the marshy region is more heavily contaminated with Cd, Hg, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn than other regions on the southeast coast of India. The Enrichment Factor, Contamination Factor, and I geo indexes are calculated, and these values are useful to assess the degree of pollution in sediments. The spatial distributions of TTMs are also controlled by other factors like geochemical, precipitation, and flocculation of particulate substances in the marsh. The results of the present study suggest the need for a regular monitoring and management program which will help to improve the quality of Pallikaranai pristine marsh land.  相似文献

Miyun County,located in the northeast of Chinese capital Beijing,was underwent remarkable variations in land use in recent years.This paper aimed to detect changes in land use of Miyun from 1997 to 2005,and to qualify the response of ecosystem to LUCC based on ecosystem services valuation.With two-periods TM images,we got land use change data,and then ecosystem services values were calculated using ecosystem services valuation coefficients proposed by Chinese scholar Xie Gaodi.Results showed that water area,farm land and unused land decreased while residential land,forest land,grassland and orchard land increased during the study period.The loss of ESV was RMB 206 million and the main reason was the decrease of water area and farm land area.As for spatial variation,there were most dramatically land use change and ESV decline in reservoir ecological protection region.The coefficient sensitivity analysis indicates that valuation coefficients used in the study are suitable and results are reasonable.The driving forces of ESV loss were rapid population growth and economic development.More work should be done to make eco-environment stay healthy.  相似文献

2009年降雪和非降雪期间对北京西北城区的气态总汞浓度进行了连续采样,比较了降雪期间、非降雪期间的气态总汞浓度日变化过程;降雪期间气态总汞浓度的降低和恢复过程。结果表明,降雪和非降雪期间大气气态总汞浓度的日均值有显著差异,降雪期间气态总汞的平均浓度为5.64ng·m^-3,非降雪期间的平均浓度为7.43ng·m^-3,前者约为后者的70%。降雪后约7h气态总汞浓度恢复到降雪前水平。研究中分析了气象因素(气压、风速、阵风速度、气温和相对湿度)对于气态总汞浓度的影响,结果表明:降雪期间主要受到风速(r=-0.527)和阵风速度(r=-0.574)的影响;非降雪期间主要受到风速(r=-0.691),阵风速度(r=-0.726)和相对湿度(r=0.692)的影响,并且相对湿度的影响与风速的影响相近。降雪和非降雪期间气态总汞的日变化有所差异:非降雪期间气态总汞浓度在午夜和清晨较高,日变化趋势与相对湿度一致;降雪期间气态总汞的日变化没有明显规律。  相似文献

Drainfields for disposal of septic tank effluents are typically designed by considering the loss of water by either upward evapotranspiration into the atmosphere or lateral and downward absorption into the adjacent soil. While this approach is appropriate for evapotranspiration systems, absorption systems allow water loss by both mechanisms. It was proposed that, in areas where high evapotranspiration rates coincide with permeable soils, drainfield sizes could be substantially reduced by accounting for both mechanisms. A two-year field demonstration was conducted to determine appropriate design criteria for areas typical of the Texas High Plains. The study consisted of evaluating the long-term acceptance rates for three different drainfield configurations: evapotranspiration only, absorption only, and combined conditions. A second field demonstration repeated the experiments for additional observation of the combined evapotranspiration and absorption and achieved similar results as the first study. The field tests indicated that the current design loading criteria may be increased by at least a factor of two for the Texas High Plains region and other Texas areas with similar soil composition and evapotranspiration rates, while still retaining a factor of safety of two.  相似文献
